2014 Crossroad Farms Bull & Female Sale

Page 1

WELCOME from Crossroad Farms We warmly extend an invitation for you to attend our 8th annual bull & female sale. We would like to thank all the bidders and buyers from our past sales, many of you traveled long distances to get here and we really appreciate the effort you made to attend. Thank you to our many repeat customers for your continued support and confidence in our program. We have enjoyed getting to know you during the past 17 years of our involvement in the seed stock business and we truly value the many friendships we have made. We welcome new customers and we look forward to assisting you with your bull needs. Many customers come to the farm before the sale where they have more time to make their selections. Feel free to stop by the farm anytime, we always enjoy those visits in the bull pen. Tell us about your program and we will try to help you make a choice that will work best for you. The future has never looked brighter for the beef industry and the commercial cattleman. With beef cattle numbers at a low, the outlook is very positive for prices to remain strong for many years. Simmental genetics have so much to offer, superior maternal traits and performance to produce heavy weight steers and top end heifers to fill the demand for replacement females. Choosing a herd bull is one of the most important choices a cattleman has to make. A good bull will pay for himself when you sell his first set of calves. A poor bull, and especially if you keep your replacements, will cost you for years. It really pays to buy the best genetics you can. The bull sale pictures were taken in November and early December almost three months before our sale date. We wanted to show customers the potential that we see in these bulls at this young age knowing that on sale day they will be purchasing a lot more bull, we hope you like this too. We have also tried to provide enough information in the footnotes to help you make your choices, but if you have any questions, please call, we are always available. Again, our sale offering is strong with good quality and selection, from calving ease to performance with solid genetics that are semen tested and ready to go to work for you. At this time we would like to say a sincere thank you to our family, friends, neighbors and employees for all your good help. Thank you to Claude Wasden and crew for always doing such a good job getting the cattle ready. To Brian Bouchard for his reliable professional service, Jerry and our good ring men, your work is all very much appreciated. This year we have added Mark Shologan from DLMS to our sales team and also Darryl Snider with Bohrson Marketing will be in attendance on sale day. If there is a bull you are interested in but are unable to attend the sale, just let us know or contact anyone of the capable sales staff to bid on your behalf. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday February 19th. Come early and enjoy some Crossroad hospitality, there will be lots of food and refreshments. The Woytiuk Family

I guess we will start this 8th annual catalogue with the first calf born in 2013, and he is a good one! Colour, style, hair, body type, excellent disposition, he has it all. We had seven Unlimited calves born this year and they are all in the bull sale. His dam kicks out a super calf every year. Black Gold Simmentals just purchased a daughter at the Source female sale in Lloydminster in December for $7,500, a full sister sold at the 2010 Source for $5,700 to Tyler’s at Cut Knife and a son to Vegreville Colony at our 2012 bull sale. Consistent production is what you can expect from this impressive bull and an excellent choice for your next herdsire.

Headliner has ample thickness, good testicle development, with an excellent disposition and will surely sire some stunning calves. Here is a bull with definite top herdsire qualities. 3

His mother raised a bull for Michael Huber from Landis, SK. and a daughter was purchased by KSL Simmentals at Beaver Lodge, AB. His grandam is also the mother of Radium, so this guy comes to you with a ton of maternal strengths. Here is a good bull that has a combination of genetics you can count on! 4

She has three sisters also working in the herd, one being the Rosemary cow, mother of Lot 46, Black Bolt.. and he is a good one!! Cornerstone was injured early in the 2012 breeding season making us short on his sons to offer for this year’s bull sale, but he was back in business this past spring and we are expecting another good Cornerstone group to offer for next year. Here is Callahan pictured in early November, a favorite since birth, naturally quiet and extremely thick. His mother is awesome and has raised two sons selling to Belle Plaine Colony and Daniel Demontarnal from Edam, SK. She is bred the same way again and we are hoping it’s a heifer, we would sure like to have another one of her daughters working in the herd. Here is a bull that will mature into one of the best you have ever owned and his perfect uddered females will produce for years. This is your opportunity to buy a good one! 6

His mother has placed four daughters in the herd and raised bulls for Double RN at Lloydminster and Riverbend Colony at Waldheim. Bonafied was born at the end of February, and will not even be a year old at the sale. I think he is going to be a tremendous herdsire. Check out the pedigree – impressive!!!!

Check out the middle on this guy at 10 months old! If you are looking for a real beef bull to pump those pounds into your next set of calves, here he is. His sire, BLCC Reputation is a March born bull purchased from the 2012 Bonchuk Farms bull sale and because of his age, we only had 8 calves this year, and they are all excellent! We believe Tripoli’s dam will be one of our future top producers. We sold her first calf at the December Source sale to Colt Arnold from Manville, AB. where she will be a definate foundation female for him. Tripoli’s grandma is the Ulme 40D cow, who at age 13 had the most perfect udder, she is also the mother of Cornerstone. Big steers and replacement females, here is a bull that will give you both! 7

She is the deepest bodied cow on the farm and has a perfect udder. We have an excellent daughter working in the herd. Her last year’s bull calf was purchased by K&C Hall Farms at Lashburn. He is sired by Ranger, a Cornerstone son that we raised and share use with our good friends the Harland’s from Little Willow Creek at Frenchman Butte, SK. We are pleased that we will have more of his calves due to be born in 2014. Signature’s dam is a Rusty sired female, they have been some of our best producing cows. She has raised bulls for some very good cattlemen, Doug Marjoram, KJ Larre Ranching & Thorsteinson Land & Livestock. Here is a bull with enormous volume. There is no doubt that he will add pounds to your steers and sire females that will create a foundation herd that will last a lifetime. Can’t go wrong with this one! 9

He also has a loaded pedigree, Houston, Franchesca, BHR Baron, and Legend. Many great uddered, and top producing females were sired by these bulls. His excellent uddered dam raised bulls for Marty Lay at Whelan, and Lorrie Schutte from Shellbrook. One daughter is working in the herd and we are hoping for another. Detour is a bull that will work, he will add power to your program and cash in your pocket.

Another Colossal son that shows a lot of promise. He was born an 81 pound twin and look at him now! Excellent performance, good body type, testicle development, color and style. His dam has raised top end progeny for us. One of our best cows was mothered by her, another daughter sold to Langer Fleckvieh and her sons have sold to Marcel & Eunice Proulx from Shell Lake & to KJ Larre Ranching from St. Walburg. If you want to score big with some Colossal calves, then Home Run may be the bull for you.

His 14P Evan dam has done an excellent job raising her second calf and is due again for mid-January. Mustang was pictured in early November and I hope I have captured some of what you can expect to see on sale day. We feel he has all the credentials to make a big impact on his new owner’s herd. 11

Redford is 5 generations fleckvieh, has good thickness, a great rear quarter, good testicle development, great color and hair. Redford follows in the footsteps of several high sellers that his dam, Crossroad Mahogany, has produced. At our 2008 sale a son sold to Twin Brae Simmentals for $11,000. Tyler Farms purchased a daughter at Simmsational for $5,500 then a bull for $6,500 then another daughter for $6,700 at the 2011 Source. In 2012 her bull calf was purchased by South Peace Colony at Farmington, B.C. for $8,000. At last year’s sale her bull calf was chosen by Holt Colony at Irma, AB. for $9,250. Consistency, quality and rock solid genetics are all a part of Redford’s package. 23

Black Bolt has a lot of potential. Pictured here in early November at 10 months of age he just keeps getting better every week. He is full of performance, long bodied, thick muscled and well balanced. Our new Homo polled Spring Creek All In bull has sired a tremendous group of bulls for us and the heifers are very popular too. We offered two open All In heifer calves at the Source sale at Lloydminster in December, Labatte Simmentals purchased one for $8,500 and the other went to Little Willow Creek for $6,000. Black Bolt’s perfect uddered Body Builder dam has been an excellent producer for us. Mader Ranches at Carstairs, AB. and Blue Creek Farms from Vulcan, AB. both purchased daughters. Thorsteinson Land and Cattle from Foam Lake, SK. and Headon Holdings from Shell Lake purchased bulls. With such consistent quality from both sides of Black Bolt’s pedigree, we expect he will sire progeny that are in high demand. Here is a bull that deserves serious consideration. ~Tested Hetero Polled and Hetero Black ~

Blackson is definitely a bigger frame score than Stubby, but they sure share that same natural thickness. This is going to be one awesome bull to look at when he matures. If your cows are tall and narrow, this is the bull for you. If you want to raise some heavy weight steers, this bull will do the job. If you are a Purebred breeder and you are looking for a new black herdsire that maybe has a little different pedigree than what’s out there and also could thicken up what’s out there, here is a bull you should consider. An excellent deep bodied Newsmaker daughter with a ton of hair! These daughters have nice tidy udders and are making a definite contribution to our herd. A well balanced brood cow in the making best describes this female. She will be a consistent producer for her new owner.

Solid, Solid, Solid heifer here. She is another Newsmaker daughter in the brood cow category. You really have to appreciate her make up and style and with this much volume, how could she not raise bulls? Her dam’s last year’s bull calf was purchased by Sam Jessop and she is due to calve again in early January.

We are happy with our first set of Esposito calves. We used him mostly in the heifer pen and we got that little extra bit of performance we were looking for. This is the first Esposito heifer calf to sell and she is a good one. Great body type, color and hair all on a moderate frame. Her Newsmaker dam did an excellent job mothering her first calf. We are confident Allouette will be an excellent producer for her new owners too.

A-Bit is a solid red, baldy face heifer who has a mom with a never miss track record. She has produced some really good ones with sons going to Doug Hoffus, Gordon Jones and Oakview Simmentals. One of her daughter’s working in herd raised the Lot #49, Black Idol bull this year. Some real producing genetics here!
