Welcome to the 42nd Canadian Red Roundup Sale & Event. This Red Angus weekend has continually been a highlight and focal point for the breed itself along with the entire cattle industry. It allows breeders to come together from coast to coast along with our friends from the south in one great weekend of featuring the breed and the leaders within it. The 2014 offering is a very select offering and it solidifies our approach to managing sales with offering quality over quantity. With the Saturday offering just shy of 70 lots and the Friday night Donation Auction with an additional 70 lots, it is shaping up to be an ideal event. The Red Angus breed leaders are evident within this catalogue whether they are participating in consigning to the Friday or Saturday events, these are the proactive breeders that keep Red Angus in the forefront of the industry. They have offered their very best to continually promote and make this another great Roundup weekend year in and year out, and we encourage you to look at their programs to add another breeding piece to your herd. We have selected the best in Canada and USA as there is something for everyone; herd bull, flushes, picks of herds, embryos, semen, open & bred females … Red Deer, AB is the place to be on Ocober 17 & 18. As I write this opening for the 2014 Roundup catalogue, the cattle industry could not be anymore exciting. We are shattering prices at the auction marts with all time highs and the futures are looking great to be in purebred cattle. As we highlight some of the very good things in the cattle industry, on the other end of the spectrum I can’t help but continually feel the pain that the Vikse family is going through and our condolences go out to them on the loss of their granddaughter. As they are working through this tragedy, I do want to commend the fellow breeders that have offered their support and a special thank you to a great young cattleman, Ty Dietrich among others to assist in picturing their sale cattle. Gesture’s like this is what makes the cattle & agriculture industry amazing, as we are always there to offer a hand to a fellow breeder in need. Just a June born calf, he posts a 830 lb. 205 day wt. and a 1297 pound adjusted yearling wt. with 39 cm testicles. He made a lot of friends both at Farmfair last year, where he was named Spring Bull Calf Champion. He and his dam also were the Reserve Champion Mature Pair there as well. Polaris is a stout made rascal, with lots of chest floor and is good hearted. He is very soft made, correct, big hipped and is masculine through his front end with large, well shaped testicles. His sire, Lazy MC Kingman 16W, has done a great job for both Ter-Ron and Towaw after we purchased him as the $21,500 high seller in Morasch’s sale. He is as easy a fleshing of a bull that we have ever used, leaving us many quality sons in our sale and females that are good uddered and productive. Interest grew as we brought her and her sister to Farmfair to display last fall. The Sales Managers really started to circle this spring when she was named Champion Junior Heifer in Bashaw, Reserve Junior Jackpot Heifer in Olds, and Champion Heifer at our Regional Heifer 4-H Show. She is extremely deep bodied, feminine and correct, and has brood cow written all over her. She is laying down a great looking udder, and there should be no doubt that she will be a great producer. Thomas isn’t ready to sell his heifer quite yet, as he hopes to campaign her next summer with her bred early to our new herdsire, Red Windy Hills Zeppelin 1240Z. She should be ready to flush in April, then will be bred back, so this flush will be the only one in 2015. The time is right to combine the bull of your choice with a female that puts together the marketability, pedigree, and phenotypical quality that is worthy of a sale like Red Roundup.

Once again for Red Roundup we are offering what we belive is truly a unique opportunity to purchase right from the heart of our program.We feel that these females are cutting edge in so many different aspects of their genetic makeup.There is an abundance of black-hided red carriers and a few red-hided ones this year who areVoodoo sired with the ability to provide outcross genetics to many breeders.This year we bred our largest selection of Fat Tony daughters and they are an impressive set; full of angularity in terms of their muscle shape and femininity. Fat Tony continues to make his mark on the breed globally and these females would share the same blood as the calf at side of the current Canadian National Champion Female for the Tufty family of TNF Red Angus and the current Australian National Champion Female for Heartland Red Angus, the Redgwell family. We also have a solid group of females to pick through from our consistently powerful female makers King 81S and Glacier 114U.We believe in functionality in our herd and have no time for foot or udder issues and focus heavily on selecting for those traits.We select for calving ease and short gestation and continue to test our heifers for these genetic merits by breeding them to calve at 20-21 months of age.We also believe in weaning performance and strive for our heifers to produce 60-65% of their body weight in calf at weaning time. These females have been tested for the real world and bred to produce. For matings on the females this year, we had the fortune to use three exciting new herdsires. The first, Huckleberry 393Z , is a grandson to the great Huckleberry bull.The Huckleberry cattle have left us with extremely low birthweight cattle that exhibit an abundance of round muscle shape.The second bull used is Ike Clanton 150A, a direct Fat Tony retained here from a top end Gilchrist Howler granddaughter, who continues to produce top end ones now into her ninth year.We feel Ike is as similiar to Fat Tony as any weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve raised to date.The third bull we used, Consensus 162A, is a full black bred bull who is a direct Conneally Consensus son.We feel he offers a ton of dimension in terms of furthering carcass characteristics and outcross genetics for the breed. Heifers were exposed to start calving February 1st 2015 and will be preg checked prior to pickup or delivery. Bid with confidence on genetics for the future that will last! When you begin to analyze the impact the Lois cow family has had in the last couple of years, not only in our herd, but at this great sale, it would only be fitting that this year’s consignment from Rainbow Red Angus would also bare the Lois name. Red Rainbow Lois 4B is a culmination of two of the most exciting animals the breed saw in 2013! Her dam was the high selling lot in this very sale in 2013, with ½ interest going to Wildcat Creek Ranch for $20 000. Red T-K Recoil 72Y, the sire of 4B, created a huge stir in the breed worldwide. The 770T cow has been a truly outstanding producer. We have sold two of her daughters; one of them being selected by a 4-H member we allowed the pick of our heifers. Two daughters are retained in our herd, both of them are Baileys’ 4-H projects. One of them has a Longitude heifer calf that will be a highlight in our “Roll out the Red” internet sale this November. The Maggie cow has only had one son, a full brother to this 170B heifer, and he was the second high seller in our bull sale this spring. This mid March heifer is one that represents exactly where we are going with our program at Redline. Her sire is our top herd bull battery, who we purchased from JJL Livestock in 2013. A son of T-K Big Deal 98U, and the great Riverdale Ann 571N cow who has raised many working daughters in the JJL herd. He was Jarrett and Jenna’s top pick of their offering, and ours as well. On her bottom side, this heifer comes from one of our most outstanding dams. Extremely deep, dark and broody; her mother also raised a Sakic son in 2011 that we took to Agribition and then kept in our herd and currently breed to our purebred and commercial cows. This heifer comes with the best of both. She is that dark cherry red which is typical of her cow family. Very attractive fronted, with loads of style. She carries through with nice expression and depth through her hunches and has a firm and attractive hip. She will milk hard and be the type of cow to raise you bull calves. Her dam is a paternal sister to the mother of our bull calf entered in the futurity as well. Both cows are daughters of YY Rambler 322N, who also sired many calves in the Bar EL and Crowfoot herds. Given her age, we feel we are putting forth our top heifer calf and we hope that she will be an outstanning female in years to come.

If someone was collecting a royalty on the quote “only the good die young” I think they would be rich by now because I’m sure we have all said it at least once. Wicked 53Y was a bull that exceeded our expectations and did everything we hoped he would… except leave us so soon. His calves are the best we have ever seen on the place and we couldn’t be more thrilled about the consistency we continue to see as they mature. The females he sired will be irreplaceable and all remain at home under lock and key, except for Inspiration 3B who Darryl sweet talked his way into getting for the holy grail of Red Angus sales. The dam of this sweet heart was purchased from Avelyn Angus and has been turning heads since she laid down and had her first calf, a heifer by Ter-Ron Full Blast 120T. We showed that heifer in 2010 and if there is any show animal that knows 3rd place is like kissing your sister it is her! 3B reminds us a lot of her sister and is typical of the Wicked’s; full of hair, deep sided, pretty fronted, and has a near perfect foot. The building blocks of a great cow in the making are all there just waiting to “inspire” you to raise your hand and bid. Purebred Breeder of the Year The Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society would like to congratulate Wilbar Cattle Co for being recognized as the 2014 Purebred Breeder of the Year!

The early history of the Willms family dates back to the early 1920’s when John and Mary Willms immigrated to Canada from Ukraine and settled in Dundurn, Saskatchewan. That is where the story of Wilbar Farms began. Fast forward to 2014 and the family of Bryan and Tracey Willms and their children, Kylie (9) and Owen (8), who own and operate Wilbar Cattle Co.

Bryan and Tracey purchased the Wilbar Farms Angus herd from Bryan’s dad Dan and his uncle Jud in the fall of 2013. Started in 1963 with a herd of Black Angus cows which still remain, the Red Angus herd came, left and came again. Dan owned a herd of Red Angus cows in the late 1970’s and then sold them only to purchase more in the late 1980’s which ran under the prefix Red Head Red Angus. The decision to purchase Red Angus cows came again as Dan and Jud saw the market demand them. A lot of cowherds preferred the Red Angus cross, while others preferred the Black Angus cross, so they decided to run both reds and blacks. When they got into the reds a lot of their black bulls were being sold into Montana which really opened up a market for their reds closer to home. The present day Wilbar herd consists of 130 Red Angus cows and 170 Black Angus cows. Bryan and Tracey decided to diversify the cowherd somewhat this summer and chose to breed 100 head of females red Simmental. Bryan feels this cross will add hybrid vigor to the calves and increase weaning weights while still keeping birthweights in line with what they are used to with the Red Angus herd. The commercial cow herd will be maintained as straight bred Red and Black Angus, calving in April, while the rest of the herd calves in February and March. Wilbar will continue to market 200 registered calves with the commercials being marketed as steers and true F1 replacements. Bryan recently sold some lighter calves and stated “I have never sold commercial calves that high before and I guarantee no one on this farm ever has!” Bryan usually weans his bull calves the beginning to middle of September, depending on weather conditions as well as harvest, and the heifer calves are usually weaned the beginning of October. The bull calves are weaned and processed then moved to an 80 acre pasture until the first part of November. “The calves do better in that much space – improved health and very few sick calves.”

Anywhere from 80-85 bulls are marketed annually by Wilbar Cattle Co. Their well known “Tools of The Trade” bull sale, held the third Wednesday in March at the farm will mark its 20th Anniversary in 2015. Approximately 65 bulls pass through the sale ring with another 25 bulls being sold by private treaty

off the yard. Of the 65 bulls under the gavel, 50% are reds and the other 50% are blacks with all of them being yearlings. As well, 20-25 red and black open Angus females are sold in the sale. The majority of the bulls are sold into Saskatchewan and Alberta with some going into Ontario. Other than the females being sold in the bull sale, a handful are sold in exclusive sales in the fall such as Red Round Up and a few are sold by private treaty. Although Bryan and Tracey’s children are just approaching 4-H age, Bryan hopes they will take an avid interest in showing at purebred shows as well. Wilbar cattle have been shown at Agribition consecutively every year that Bryan can remember along with being shown at Farm Fair as long as harvest has permitted them to do so. In 2013, Red Wilbar Longitude 646Y was crowned with the prestigious title of Supreme Champion Bull at Agribition. Longitude is owned with Redrich Farms from Alberta. Along with running a herd of 300 cows, Bryan and Tracey are also part of the family grain farm operation. Bryan, Dan and Jud’s son Tom farm approximately 12,000 acres of land that is under a three crop rotation of wheat, peas and canola. Barley silage is put up for feed along with some hay. All of their pasture land is within a 10 mile radius and can sustain the entire cowherd. Like most young families, Bryan and Tracey are always on the go. Their daughter Kylie enjoys showing horses while both she and her brother Owen play hockey. Although running the roads for hockey can be very demanding on their time, Bryan commented “it’s a different group of people that we get to visit with and it can be a breath of fresh air to visit about other things than agriculture sometimes.” Although the name has changed to Wilbar Cattle Co., the Willms’ commitment to the cattle industry and agriculture industry as a whole will remain the same. Bryan would like to see their cowherd expand to 400 head in the next couple of years. He plans on maintaining the current number of purebred cows and expanding on the commercial side of things while always keeping the cowherd a purebred Angus base because as history has shown, it has been very successful for them. Commercial Breeder of the Year The Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society would like to congratulate Lomond Grazing Association for being recognized as the 2014 Commercial Breeder of the Year!

Approximately 5700 grazing leases in Alberta encompass nearly 5 million acres of land spread across the province. Their main purpose is to ‘provide summer pasture for Alberta’s farmers and ranchers on public land enabling them to use their own land for crop and hay production.’ Farmers and ranchers basically buy the right to use the surface of the land to graze their cattle on in which they might otherwise not have access to. The Lomond Grazing Association is one of these Association’s. Started in the early 1950’s by some local landowners, the Association spans across nearly 60,000 acres of native prairie grass located in the prime grazing country of southern Alberta, approximately 35 miles east of Vulcan. The Association consists of 31 members who run 2100 pairs on the land from mid May to mid October. Each member can run a maximum number of 70 head. When an opening comes up, a vote is held by the general membership and the decision is made if a new patron is allowed to join the Association. A patron must hold land within the boundary of the Association in order to be eligible to run cattle there.

Daily operations of the Lomond Grazing Association are overseen by the capable hands of manager, Darren Hubka. Darren is a native southern Albertan with roots in the cattle industry. Although his duties are vast and never ending, one of the most important ones he holds is the selection and purchasing of bulls to be run with the patron’s cows. 900 head of the 2100 head grazed on the lease are bred to Red Angus bulls. Anywhere from 10-15 bulls are purchased yearly either through specific Red Angus breeder’s bull sales or by private treaty. Darren shares the responsibility of selecting of the herdsires with the Board of Directors and likes to run both yearling and two year olds although he finds finding 2 year olds gets more difficult every year. He keeps the bull battery young by aging them out to 5 years old and then shipping them. When selecting the bulls he will run, Darren uses visual eye appeal, EPD’s and genetics to get the patron’s the best calves possible that will have high weaning weights in the

fall and bring top dollar at the auction mart. The Association owns all of the bulls that are purchased and any complaints a patron may have with calves or calving issues come back to him. Although those are few and far between, hair is pulled on all of the bulls so calves can be DNA’d if need be to pinpoint the problem bull. Bulls of similar type and genetics are purchased so equality in their offspring is the same for all Association patrons. The majority of the bulls are turned out June 1st with the cows and are left for 60 days with the exception of two herds where they are turned out May 15th and again July 10th . Calves are generally weaned mid October, with the exception again of one herd where they will wean the third week of September and the calves will be sent to a specific feedlot weighing on average 585 lbs. One seasonal pasture rider who is with Darren 7 months of the year assists in the day to day operations of the Association, keeping a watchful eye over the herds for any issues and as the need arises, additional help will be brought in for take out of the cattle and early weaning. The patron’s of the Association run gates when their herds are being taken out as well as the Board of Directors coming to lend a helping hand. Although the cattle are only on pasture for a few short months, the operations of the Association don’t stop when the cattle are pulled off. Up keep of fencing must be done and all of the bulls are wintered on the lease land which means daily chores for Darren during the winter months and then the search for quality Red Angus bulls to run with the patron’s herds begins again and the cycle starts over for yet another year.
