Bull Sale

22 ND ANNUAL TUESDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2025

1PM - AT THE FARM - DIDSBURY, AB

WELCOME

On behalf of the Hadway Family and our Westway Crew we welcome you to the 22nd Annual Westway Farms Bull Sale. We would like to thank everyone who supported our milestone first live sale on the farm last year. As in years past, your support in evaluating our program, bidding and investing in our bulls is so very much appreciated. Bottom line is we want our customers to have success with Westway genetics and we strive to produce the bull you need for your program.

Like any other year we are excited about our bull sale offering. The 2025 bull pen is our largest to date and it consists of Red and Black Simmental, Black Angus and SimAngus bulls. The cattle market has been exceptionally strong in both the calf market and replacement heifer market so finding the bull to move your program forward to meet these needs is important.

Expanding our cow herd has allowed us to market more bulls through our Annual Sale. The selection criteria, culling parameters, and percent of bulls sold (approximately 33% of males born) hasn’t changed. We are not breeding cattle to make something that is popular, we are doing everything we can to make the cattle right for the commercial cattle producer in mind.

The bulls on offer are only as good as the cows they descend from. We firmly believe that the most important part of a breeding program is the mother cows that are consistently uniform in type and design. The quality of our cowherd is monitored seasonally to ensure every female is earning her keep to produce a saleable bull calf or replacement female. We understand that there is a significant relationship between calf performance and a cow’s genetic merit. With that in mind, our main goal is raising cattle that convert and stay healthy while doing so.

We invite you to review the offering and if it works to stop by the farm and walk through the bull pen and evaluate the bulls in their familiar surroundings and see which bull might be best suited for your program. If you are unable to view the bulls, attend the sale or even bid online and wish to have someone bid for you we ask you to contact the Westway Crew or the Westway Sale Team and they will assist you. You can be confident with our sales team expertise and their service.

2024 was a busy and exciting year here on the farm. Will and Leah got married here in July and what a great celebration that was. Will said he didn’t want the night to end, that’s how good it was. In August we held our Female Sale and that too was a fun celebration of our female program.

The little ones are growing up. Carter and Cal attended the National YCS Show in Olds and had alot of fun and met new friends. They keep busy with baseball, hockey, gymnastics, dance and 4-H. Papa Tom has even come out of retirement to coach Cal’s hockey team. Traig adores all his cousins and Conlen is teaching him all things boys need to learn - like how to wrestle!

Recently, Tom and I were watching the show ‘The Landman’ and in this particular episode Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, was talking about family and his success in business and life. He said, “Any success I have had pales in comparison to how proud I am to live my life working with my kids”. Tom looked at me and said, “That’s exactly how I feel”. We truly feel blessed to have all four of our kids working here at the farm full-time. Of all the highs and lows that come with farming, hands down the best thing is sharing this farm life with family by your side.

Andie and Bill and their Crew have done a tremendous job getting the bull pen ready for you to review. Please join us for lunch prior to the sale and enjoy some Westway hospitality! We look forward to catching up with you all on Tuesday, February 25th!

WESTWAY FARMS LTD.

This was the first year we had separated the Angus bulls from the Simmental bulls for the summer with increasing numbers of each. The Simmental bulls only had creep feed for the last three weeks prior to weaning when the pasture quality started to decrease in August. The Angus bulls did not receive any creep feed as we believe they are in good enough shape pre weaning without it. The bulls were weaned the last few days in August where they were weaned in pens and put on a high forage mixed ration until the bawling was over. Once the bulls were through the weaning process they were put back into large paddocks where they were able to graze corn stalks and were supplemented with a high protein, forage based TMR ration. On November 20th the bulls were processed and sorted into their winter pens. The bulls have then been maintained on the high protein diet to enhance lean muscle development and to also maximize frame growth. The bulls continue to consume a total mixed ration, made up of straw for dry feed, along with a 5% barley grain, and the balance of ration being corn silage. The diet also contains a high quality low inclusion protein supplement from Bullseye Feeds that includes a vitamin and chelated mineral package to help boost the bulls overall health and immunity. The bulls feeding program is not intended to be an industry competition, it is a true test on our bulls ability to convert pounds of feed to pounds of weight gain. The bull’s overall diet is formulated to achieve a 3.0lbs ADG, allowing the bulls to show their true genetic potential. Lower converting bulls get sorted out prior to creating the catalog if their not achieving 3lbs ADG when we take yearling weights in early January. The bulls never have their feet trimmed prior to the sale and are semen tested by Didsbury Vet Clinic.

57 WFL MR. WESTWAY 68M PUREBRED SIMMENTAL CA-PG1484428 R PLUS REDDINGTON 0143H WFL 1768 JENNA 39K WHL JENNA 1768E

• A dark red blaze bull that is smaller in frame size but real smooth made, has great hair and is nice fronted and smooth through his shoulder - real quiet to boot!

• Low birth bull

• This bull’s biggest upside is his black baldy dam - she is incredible looking because of her deep underline that runs from her chest straight back to her flank, her beautiful and feminine look along with a great udder.

“Westway has multiple options when it comes to the black Simmental division where there are purebred, percentage and SimAngus bulls on offer. Use the purebred and percentage bulls for a terminal cross or when in need of adding performance to your future replacement heifer calves. The SimAngus bulls are great for adding maternal genetics to a crossbred cow herd without sacrificing performance. All SimAngus bulls are a result of two registered, purebred animals being mated together to ensure pedigrees and data are recorded and tracked. All black bulls are selected for structural soundness, heavy hair coats and backed by functional and efficient mother cows with above average feet and udders.”

WFL MR. WESTWAY 4M

• Feature black baldy bull in the offering!

• Good sized, masculine fronted and ties it all together with great top and hip width and extra length - One that will sire exceptional calves that wean up heavy and also make great replacement females.

• The dam, 2025H is one of the best looking red cows on the farm for her fault free look and overwhelming power - she has sold sons to Downie Lake Colony x2 (2024), Snow Flake Simmental (2024) and daughters in our female sale this summer to Sirorski Simmental (2024) and Anchor D Simmental (2024)

59 WFL MR. WESTWAY 45M

• Dense made kind of bull with nice crest and muscle shape.

• Dam is a very quiet cow that is below average in frame size and has a good udder.

WESTWAY 133M

• A larger sized bull with lots to offer in terms of pounds and performance - masculine through his head and neck with good hair to compliment it all.

• His dam is unreal Andie thinks, and I would agree with her because 741E also raised 9120G who is one of my favourite black cows and her picture can be found at the front of the book.

• Maternal brother sold to JT Farms (2021), maternal sister sold to Ag Land Farms in the female sale of the decade this August (2024)

• Stout made bull with that big rib, top and hip that Game Time breeds into them - gotta love that good, straight hair to top it all off!

• Low birth bull

• Big stout fella with tons of shape through his hip and stands on a nice leg to carry his performance.

• Maternal brother sold to Sandhill Colony (2023)

• One of the most attractive looking El Dorado’s on offer that is nice headed and crested, smooth made and put together in a balanced and complete package.

• I’m biased towards this one, as I am a big fan, but if you want one to make heavy steer calves and fancy replacement females, get this one!

• 7100E adds the maternal upside to this guy as she is a “ picture perfect” black blaze cow in Andie’s words. Good sized, very deep bodied and great footed and uddered.

• Nice headed bull with a strong top line for all that middle he has and HE has that El Dorado hip shape and heavy hair coat.

• Lots of maternal upside being out of the 403B donor cow - this cow flat out does not miss on a mating and raises some of the most functional cattle on the ranch.

• 403B is Bill’s favourite resident black baldy cow on the ranch- it doesn’t matter if it is a drought (for central Alberta), or if the cow feed is the best it has ever been - this cow always looks the same, always flushes well, always breeds back, always raises a good natural calf and always is in the middle of the pack when in a cattle drive - even at 11 years old!

69

WFL MR. WESTWAY 42M

• A strong topped bull with lots of hair and stands on a good leg.

• A real good looking Barry bull thats huge butted and wide over his pin set, stands on a great amount of bone for his size and has great hair to go with it all.

83 ANDI MR. WESTCROSS 111M

• Gets some added look from his sire WFL Outter Banks and is wide built from the ground up with great bone dimension.

• Low birth bull

• His dam raised the high selling bred heifer that sold in our summer female sale to KT Ranch.

• 2187 is a beautiful cow that has a great amount of power and depth from her chest to her flank and is feminine built in terms of her look through her front end.

84 WFL MR. WESTWAY 83M

• Dam is a moderate made, good haired cow that has a tidy udder. She weaned this guy off at 61% of her body weight. Unreal.

• Real complete made with good shape through his middle and muscle - similar build to his red, paternal brother Lot 11.

• I call this one the creature! Extra length through his front end and entire body with huge rib shape and awesome hair. He will sire fancy calves!

• He is the result of an embryo purchase out of a cow that has been very successful in producing great progeny. Our great friends at Westbrook Cattle had a beautiful black baldy female that is a maternal sister to this bull - she is pictured above as a support picture.

• Similar make and type to Lot 88.

• Dam is a big middled cow with that deep rib shape - one Andie calls a “belly dragger”, that big old belly is held up by a great foot.

• Thick from head to tail with extra rib shape that gives him that real tanky look and extra hair to go with it.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR VET

DIDSBURY VETERINARY CLINIC

Welcome to the 2025 Westway Farms Bull Sale! All of the cattle at Westway Farms are on a complete herd health program and everyone at Didsbury Vet Services is proud to be able to partner with them as they work hard to bring you this outstanding group of bulls.

This herd health program for these bulls begins prior to even being born. All of the cows at Westway Farms receive a killed IBR/BVD vaccine, 8 way vaccine and Scour Bos 9 at preg check time in the fall as well as a topical Ivermectin for parasite control. This serves to maintain the overall health of all cattle present on the farm but also gets a headstart on the immunity of these bulls before they even hit the ground.

At birth, all calves receive Bovilis Nasalge. This is followed by 2 doses of Bovi Shield Gold One Shot and Ultrabac 7 Somnubac (IBR/BRSV/BVD/PI3 and 7 way Clostridial plus Histophilus Somnus). These are administered between pasture turnout in the spring and weaning in the fall. All sale bulls will

have received 2 doses of Fusogard (footrot vaccine) as well, prior to leaving the farm after sale day. For parasite control, all calves receive a topical Ivermectin in the early fall and a topical Permethrin in the winter for lice control.

We will have completed a physical exam and semen evaluation of all bulls offered prior to sale day. Each bull will be assessed to determine soundness, excellent body condition score, and to be free of external visible defects. The semen evaluation includes physical palpation of the internal sex glands, testicles and epididymis and a visual exam of the penis during sample collection. A scrotal measurement is taken to ensure they are above minimum requirements for scrotal size. The semen is evaluated for motility and morphology and all bulls present at sale day will have received a passing grade above 70% or a decision deferred which means they will be reassessed and confirmed to pass prior to leaving the farm. We are grateful to have a small part in the production of this excellent group of bulls. Everyone at Westway Farms continuously goes above and beyond in their care of all animals on the farm and in the high level of service they offer to each person that purchases one of these bulls. If there are any questions regarding their program or health of any of these bulls, please feel free to contact Dr. Andy Mencarelli at Didsbury Vet Services.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND HARD WORK THAT YOU CONTRIBUTE TO OUR CATTLE PROGRAM.
