As I write this, 500 lb steers will bring $1000, 800 lb steers will trade for $1200 and mature butcher bulls are nearly $1/pound. Explanation of Performance Terms: BW - Actual birth weight taken within 24 hrs of birth. AWW - Weaning weight adjusted to 205 days and age of dam calculated by Canadian Limousin Association. ADG - Average Daily Gain- actual average weight by the animal from birth to weaning. WPDA - Weight Per Day of Age from birth until last recorded weight, not considering the birthweight. Explanation of EPD Terms: Expected Progeny Differences are used to compare the genetic merit of animals in various traits. An EPD predicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents. GL - Gestation Length - the gestation number indicates how long a cow’s gestation period will be CED - Calving Ease Direct- usefuI for choosing which sires to breed to first calf heifers to produce calves that are born easily.

BWT - predicts the difference in actual birth weight of a bull’s calves compared to the breed average (expressed in Ibs.) WWT - indicates the ability of the sire’s calves to grow from birth to weaning (expressed in lbs.) YWT - growth from birth to yearling (expressed in lbs.) CEM - Calving Ease Maternal-important for choosing sires that produce replacement females that give birth to their first calf easily. MA - Milking Ability - a sire’s milk EPD is expressed as the additional pounds of weaning weight of calves from daughters, due to genes for milk passed on from the sire to the daughters. SC - scrotal circumference has been found to be a good indicator of age at puberty and is a highly heritable trait. EPD’s for SC are expressed in centimeters (cm) with higher values indicating genes for larger yearling scrotal circumferences of sons and early puberty of daughters. DOC - a temperment score with higher numbers indicates a more docile attitude.
