ON-FARM 12 MILES NORTH OF MAIDSTONE
Commercially Committed | Offering Horned & Polled Hereford Bulls
Breeding the whiteface bulls to build profitable, productive, durable and maternal baldy females for commercial farmers and ranchers is our FOREMOST intent. This motivation led to adopting the phrase: “Commercially Committed.” In fact, our 2023 sale saw 100% of the bulls sold to families or colonies raising commercial cattle. Stimulating the utilization of Hereford cattle for their time-tested: docility, fertility, structure, longevity and crossbreeding versatility remains a mainstay here. Adding to those strengths is where the breeding emphasis needed to be and has been focused. Instilling udder quality, consistent milk, sensible frame, muscle, center body dimension, eye appeal and pigment have been critical physical breeding objectives. Beyond that-utilizing herd sires with strong end-product merit and utilizing carcass ultrasound for 19 years on all bulls and replacements has been important. The rationale for this effort is elevating ribeye area and marbling in Hereford influence feeder cattle to derive more value via more consistently preferable quality and yield grade attributes, respectively
Embracing the next horizon of breeding information and strategies has compelled us to employ genomic enhanced EPD’s on ALL the sale bulls-something we have done for 5 years. CONSIDER THAT GENOMIC - ENHANCEMENT PROVIDES A WHOLE CALF CROP WORTH OF INFORMATION ON A BULL’S BREEDING VALUE BEFORE HE HAS PONTENTIALLY BRED A COW. This investment costs us $60-$114/head. Justifying this expense is customer directed and explained by: 1) Ensuring pedigree integrity by parent verification, 2) Mitigating risk to commercial buyers by increasing the confidence of a bulls genetic potential for each EPD trait, 3) Determining homozygous polled, heterozygous polled or horned status of each bull to suit buyer preferences, 4) Determining genetic condition status to build transparency and trust with buyers, 5) Expedite genetic improvement by increasing accuracy of selection and reducing generation interval.
Working to attract a youthful, new generation of cost and input conscious producers is very fulfilling for us. Yet, equally satisfying is breeding gentle, versatile and efficient cattle to make life more pleasant for established operators. The most profitable commercial breeding principle is heterosis or hybrid vigor, derived from structured crossbreeding systems. This is especially true for lowly heritable traits like fertility and longevity-REAL PROFIT DRIVERS. Fortunately, Herefords are a pure outcross to optimize heterosis on black, red and white cows. Consider that every GENUINE BALDY bred or open female that demands a premium on the replacement market is surprisingly part Hereford…

BREED AVERAGES as of November 4, 2024
Acquiring Genetics: Our AI and natural herd sires are acquired from humble, hard working and professional families throughout Canada and the United States. Our intent is to source from breeders that couple: maternal productivity, visual distinction, comprehensive data collection, carcass ultrasound testing and genomic-enhanced EPD’s. Moreover, these genetic providers focus on commercial bull production and operate in environments typically harsher than our own.
Breeding: We heavily utilize artificial insemination on sires that we either own, have personally evaluated or have great confidence in based on research and testimonials. We will breed as many cows on natural heats as possible for the first 1-2 cycles and then turn out herd bulls. First calf heifers are now bull bred from the start of the season. Typically, we synchronize all the replacements for a timed AI, along with heat detection-then turn bulls in immediately.
Bull/Cowherd Nutrition: Bull calves and long yearling bulls are developed with hammer milled oats and protein supplement and
provided hay, along with free choice mineral/salt. The cowherd grazes native/tame pasture and then transitions to corn grazing prior to and after calving. On corn they are provided a free choice high calcium mineral, along with salt. Just prior to calving, they are penned close to the yard and fed hay or greenfeed temporarily. Similarly, those will be the two options they are fed before heading to summer pasture.
Herd Health: At birth, calves are provided: Nasalgen 3-PMH, Vitaferst, Toltrazuril Bolus. Before pasture turnout, calves receive: Bovi-Shield Gold One-Shot, Tasvax 8, and Solmectin. Prebreeding
Cows/Replacements: Bovi-Shield Gold FP5, Tasvax 8. Prior to weaning: Bovi-Shield Gold FP5, Tasvax 8, Solmectin, Safeguard and Multimin 90. Post-weaning: Bovi-Shield Gold FP5, Tasvax 8. In the fall, long yearling bulls again receive: Bovi-Shield Gold FP5, Tasvax 8, Solmectin, Multimin 90.
Purchase Inclusions: Wintering, Breeding Soundness Exam, Carcass Ultrasound Scan, April/May/June Delivery.
Volume Buyer Incentive: Buy two or more bulls and receive a 3% discount on each bull purchased.
Repeat Buyer Discount: Take 2% off your purchase if you’ve previously bought a bull in the past from Big Gully Farm.
PLUS
Young Producer Incentive: Take 5% off your purchase if you’re age 30 or younger at sale time and pay for the bull yourself.
Deferred Payment Plan: Realizing our sale falls earlier on the calendar than some, deferring payment to the start of 2025 is an option or individually working out a favorable payment plan can be discussed.
Bull Refund/Exchange Policy: Understanding that a bull calf may not pass a spring semen test or not develop to our/your satisfaction, we will gladly provide several options:
1) FULL REFUND of purchase price
2) EXCHANGE with a spare bull and adjust purchase value on your guidance
3) PROVIDE a spare bull or our own herd sires for the breeding season. WE AVOID ISSUING SALE CREDITS
Polled/Horned Inheritance:
Unfortunately, one of the biggest misunderstandings regarding the proper fit for Hereford bulls is horned/polled inheritance. When understood, it can provide more flexibility to use horned or heterozygous polled bulls on many commercial cows than might be expected-if avoiding horns is the intention. For this example, heterozygous polled cows might be a set of F1 black baldy females out of Angus and Horned Hereford. Consider homozygous polled cows as a set of long time straightbred Angus.

The Canadian Hereford Association (CHA) has embraced the use of genomics into their genetic evaluation by launching a first of its kind single step analysis that utilizes the marker effects of specific traits. Likewise, CHA is directly estimating accuracy values rather than approximating. The direct estimation of accuracy results in a more conservative value, but a more accurate value than previous methodologies. The CHA is producing the most reliable genetic evaluation that is supported by Whole Herd enrollment and genomics, which will give prospective buyers added confidence in purchasing young and unproven animals.
Buying animals that have a genomic profile incorporated into their Expected Progeny Difference offers many advantages that allow for quicker breed and herd improvement. Below is a table showing the average increase in accuracy when buying a young animal with a Genomic Enhanced EPD versus an animal without a GEEPD. Similarly, an effective progeny number increase is listed by the trait that shows how many progeny equate to the genomic enhancement information of a young animal (e.g. yearling). That’s right, buying a young animal that has been genotyped is like having 2-17 progeny, depending on the trait. The proof gained on young, non-parent animals via genomic enhancement can be close to an entire calf crop of data. Therefore, greatly mitigating risk and allowing for more accurate and accelerated selection.
*Effective Progeny Number is the difference gained for genotyped animals versus non-genotyped animals
ECHELON 15M is a younger calf, yet still stood out for his balance, center body dimension and power-particularly his stout hip. He is a red eyed, dark colored and short marked son of the standout private treaty purchase from Phantom Creek-‘PCL 4013 JUPITER 11J.’ Testicle size, stoutness of bone and skeletal integrity are clear assets as well. Moreover, his dam is a maternal headed, big
and correct structured cow with refined teat size.

COMMENCEMENT 9M is the oldest calf and correspondingly a long bodied, heavy weight option with red eyes and dark color. His dam is a correct structured, large framed and long bodied cow-which leads us to believe he should pass on similar growth and performance. He is among the first calves of our ‘C 5355C GENESIS 1301 ET’ bull and we have many strong half-sisters to retainespecially considering his paternal grand-dam.
JACKKNIFE 24M is another younger calf that should transmit strong maternal capability in regards to udder quality and milk, while maintaining a modest mature cow weight EPD. His paternal grandam, ‘PCL A191 REAL LADY 14F’, is among the most physically impressive Hereford cows we have saw. Moreover, his young ‘NJW 160B 028X HISTORIC 81E ET’ sired dam, has put her first two calves in the sale and possesses a high-quality udder with small teats and level suspension. This calf is coordinated on the move, deep ribbed and attractive in his balance.
DEFACTO 25M leads off several sons of ‘BIG-GULLY 173D FOREFRONT 46J’-our high seller three years ago and one of the more physically imposing bulls we have developed. This bull is short marked and fully pigmented with a favorable combination of structure, rib shape and soundness. His genetic parameters are really strong for range of traits-particularly sustained cow fertility, ribeye area and marbling.

DECLARATION 26M is a pretty unique calf in several regards. As a heifer’s first calf, he came out at a conservative 78 lbs-yet weaned off in the heaviest bracket of his contemporaries. This corresponds to his exceptional calving ease estimates and his birth to yearling EPD spread. This calf is built powerful from the ground up-wide based, big middled, stout hipped and masculine featured, yet still very attractively structured. His excellent genetic script continues past his growth spread to include elite milk, udder quality and ribeye area figures.
46M
PETITION 46M couldn’t be marked more appropriately for what so many commercial producers running Angus or Simmental based cows are seeking-big red eyes and red legged. Plus, his dam is a physical standout in regard to foot quality, balance, power and ribcage boldness. Moreover, she is also the dam of ‘BIG-GULLY 173D FOREFRONT 46J’-sire of several sale bulls. Petition 46M is sound on the move, smooth shouldered, deep
and offers strong maternal ability. DB CARRIER
ACCREDIT 54M is a long sided, level lined bull with excellent structure and mobility. We would expect this bull to transmit a bit more skeletal extension, performance and frame based on his dam being a larger statured cow. Genetic predictions for sustained cow fertility, udder suspension and teat size are favorable for this calf and correspond with the udder quality of his dam.
MATERNAL GRAND DAM
SUBSTANTIATE 62M has stood out from birth with his extra bone, powerful top shape and stout hip. Uniquely though, he possesses high calving ease and modest birth weight projections. Considering his masculinity and muscle dimension, balance and structural integrity are still clear assets. His dam and maternal grand-dam are really attractive cows with strong udder quality-the latter being among the most productive cows purchase from the Phantom Creek herd.
INSTATE 78M had the heaviest raw weaning weight calf of his contemporary, due in part to his big back, stout hip, expressive stifle, extra bone and masculine features. This calf has always been as rugged and powerful as any of the sale options. His dam is an aged ‘C 88X RIBEYE 2011’ daughter-among the most productive, correct uddered and proficient milking set of half-sisters we have had.
INTENT 103M is a big red eyed, younger born calf that grew admirably and is sired by the standout new sire-‘C ARLO 2135 ET’. His dam has an excellent udder with strong, level suspension and small teats. 103M is smooth shouldered, strong topped, long sided and flexible on the move. Genetically-growth and milk are clear strengths, while still maintaining conservative mature cow weight.
INTRUST 110M is another of the heavy boned, wide based, big topped, stout stifled calves that’s also fully pigmented and was substantial at weaning. His dam is a conservative sized cow with plenty of ribcage volume and small teats, while consistently transmitting extra power to her progeny. This bull was born with a sensible birth weight, subsequently offering strong calving ease and birth to yearling spread projections. MD CARRIER
MISTRIAL 132M has been attractive from the start with his big red eyes, appealing balance and excellent body length. He had a practical birth weight and offers exceptional projections for calving ease, birth weight, maternal calving ease and udder quality. His dam is a modest sized cow with strong udder quality and excellent structure. His sire, ‘NJW 133A 6589 MANIFEST 87G ET’, has done a really nice job here in coupling calving ease, performance and structural integrity. HY CARRIER
PATERNAL GRAND DAM
GRAND JURY 157M has been a strong option since early in his development due to the structural correctness, performance and balance he displays. This bull is laid in smooth at his shoulder, continues strong down his top and travels away with spread to his pins and a muscular quarter. His aged dam is a sharp fronted, long bodied cow with a level udder. Genetic estimates of growth, udder suspension and teat size follow along as upper tier. DB CARRIER
INJUNCTION 232M is incredibly short marked and heavily pigmented, matching what so many commercial cattlemen are seeking in Hereford bulls. Beyond that, his genetic predictions are strong and versatile across a multitude of traits. This calf is really long sided, smooth shouldered, strong topped and flexible in his lower joints. His dam is still youthful appearing, bold centered and has excellent udder quality with strong suspension and teat spacing. MD & DB CARRIER
ARLO 420M is a bold and deep sided bull with prominent pigment and engaging balance from the profile. Another ‘ARLO 2135 ET’ son-his sisters and brothers will be an increasingly visible and important part of our cow herd moving forward. The dam of 420M is a dark red, stout, big bodied and easy fleshing cow. For those wanting to transmit volume, yet stay true to maternal strength-420M should be capable of it.
AUTHORIZE 514M is a heifer breeding option with a 78 pound birth weight to correspond with exceptional calving ease and birthweight EPD's. This bull is more conservative in his size and stature, similar to his dam, yet remains remarkably bold and deep in his ribcage. He is powerful out of his hip and stifle, thereby tracking out wide, free and true off both ends of his skeleton. His dam was a first calf heifer with really tight, level udder and refined teats.
BLACKJACK 680M is heavily pigmented and short marked with a compelling physical build. He is strong topped, big ribbed, square hipped and sound striding. His dam is a conservative sized, deep sided cow that seems to comfortably maintain body condition, while possessing a refined and level udder. 680M has a paternal grand-dam that we would consider one of the most physically impressive Hereford cows we have saw.
FIRECRACKER 702M is an impressive effort in terms of pounds of calf weaned relative to body weight on the part of his dam. She is a refined, modest sized and correct uddered second calf female. The bull himself is really bold and deep in construction of his ribcage. Plus, he is muscular and fully pigmented with a particularly impressive set genetic predictions across the array of traits.

ALLEGIANCE 786M is built well from the standpoint of structure, rib shape, muscle and balance. Maternally, this bull could be exciting considering how he couples strong milk and udder quality estimates, along with top and bottom of his pedigree influenced by the great ‘NJW 98S R117 RIBEYE 88X ET’ bull. His dam is sensibly sized, attractive and sound footed-while his paternal grand-dam is truly impressive with elite udder quality.
832M
IMPEACH 832M is a son of the exciting ‘SR DOMINATE 308F ET’ sire that we have bred to the past few years. This calf is built correctly from the ground up-true tracking off both ends, long bodied and strong topped with a square hip. His dam is an aged cow, that has productively complimented a variety of bulls, when mated to them. He offers a valuable combination of calving ease, birth
and growth, while having an exceptional ribeye EPD.

INDICTMENT 838M is a bold and deep ribbed horned calf that’s also wide based and heavy muscled. Still attractive from the profile and flexible on the move, he is masculine, rugged and easy fleshing in his look. His dam is a modest sized cow that appears to milk well and has transmitted extra skeletal width and muscle dimension to her progeny this far. Another son of the powerful and big bodied sire-‘SR DOMINATE 308F ET’.
MANIFEST 79L is a big testicled, larger framed, long sided bull that was still moderate at birth and matches that with a conservative birthweight EPD. His dam typically passes on extra stature and length, while possessing an excellent udder with strong suspension, spacing and refinement-matched by her son’s udder quality EPD estimates.
DILIGENT 180L was born light at 80 pounds with matching estimates for high calving ease and conservative birth weight EPD. His dam was the oldest cow in the herd, just moving on this fall. He is a laid in correct through his shoulder, strong and level down his topline, while traveling with ease off both ends. As referenced, his aged dam maintained a quality udder, excellent hoof shape and correctness of structure-matching well to several sires over time.
TIER ONE 201L is all power and performance. He was a younger born, standout bull calf that continues to couple growth, a big back, stout hip and heavy structure. He is broad testicled, short marked and offers high genomic projections for growth, milk and ribeye area. His dam is similarly big ribbed, easy fleshing, stout boned and appears to milk well. Difficult to make Hereford bulls have this amount of dimension and volume, yet remaining sound and attractively balanced.
MANDATE 372L is a good looking, big bodied, stout hipped bull that tracks out aggressively. We like his combination of masculinity, while still being smooth shouldered, bold ribbed and correct in his lines. His young dam is strong in her udder suspension, fully pigmented and attractive in her look from the side. We believe this bull will be versatile in making strong replacements, yet incorporating shape and body in a set of steers.
RESOLVE 512L is big topped, stout hipped bull that travels with good base width. He is laid in smooth at the point of his shoulder, yet bold in his ribcage and goes to the ground true off both ends of his skeleton. We purchased his sire ‘PCL 4013 JUPITER 11J’ privately from Phantom Creek, where he was a standout of his contemporaries for performance and physical dimension and has been utilized here post-AI on polled cows.
PURSUIT 709L was the first calf out of an excellent ‘NJW 160B 028X HISTORIC 81E ET’ daughter that is long sided, sound at the ground and possesses terrific udder quality. Similarly, her son features breed leading EPD projections for udder suspension and teat size. He is correct in his foot shape, long sided and takes a long stride.
MANDATE 711L is a long sided, level designed, big testicled bull. He is correct in his angles and travels well with a long stride. His dam is good looking with excellent maternal character, balance, body dimension, and udder quality. Both sides of this pedigree suggest strong replacement female potential in regard to females that should have correct udders and robust structure.
COMPOSURE 715L continued to gain momentum in his development on grass this summer. He is strong topped, skeletally extended bull with a level hip. Moreover, he is deep sided and tracks with good agility and flexibility to the ground. His young dam projects what we are after in terms of body capacity, maternal character, udder quality and physical build. Genetically, this bull reads the favorable side of breed average for most estimates.

DEPLOYMENT 784L is a younger born bull that came out at a modest 74 lbs from an attractive, middle aged female. This bull is more conservative in his frame, but built really well from the ground up and would merit consideration for use on heifers when coupling his actual birth weight and calving ease/birth weight EPD’s. He is upheaded and smooth shouldered, yet strong and bold down his top with a square, muscular hip.
SKYFALL 835L is a heavily pigmented, bold middled bull that is shapely out of his hip and quarter. He projects strong calving ease and birth weight estimates, along with modest mature cow weight, high sustained cow fertility and excellent teat and udder quality EPD's. A younger maternal half brother is offered as Lot 838M. The dam and maternal grand-dam are both more conservative framed cows that appear to milk well, while maintaining body condition in production.
