Our bulls are developed with longevity in mind. They are fed responsibly on a large 15 acre paddock for plenty of exercise and to emphasize on muscle development and soundness, not pushed jeopardizing their longevity and fertility. The bulls will all be fertility tested and guaranteed breeders. We are excited about the consistency and quality in this year’s pen. Calving ease bulls that still possess dimension and growth and power bulls with extra shape and performance. We make our living Solely from our cattle. Our herd is built around strong cow families emphasizing on fertility, sound feet and legs, thick easy doing cattle with good udders, and herd sires with muscle, performance and do ability as well as calving ease. Our purebred cows are run on native grass along side our commercial cows and under similar management as most of our commercial customers. If they need special treatment here, how will they work for you. We believe our cattle should work harder than we do, and we cull strictly to ensure they are productive and proftable in the “real” world. We look forward to seeing our past and new customers on March 31st and thank you for your confdence in our program.
All the best in 2025, Ward Cockburn
CALF PROTOCOL
• Enforce 3 at birth
We are commercial producers too.
We are proud of the fact our purebred cows are managed under the same conditions as our commercial herd. We feel our responsibility as seedstock producers is to focus on raising cattle that thrive under harsh conditions and are the type buyers and feeders want. We strive to produce bulls with performance, hardiness, calving ease, added shape and sound structured, raised by dams that are big volume, fertile, and great uddered. Fundamental traits such as feed conversion, longevity, calving interval and consistency are paramount in both our purebred and commercial herds. We invest heavily in some of the top bulls the breed to continually improve these genetics. We use these same genetics in our 300 head commercial cowherd which allows us to utilize and test genetics that best suit the needs of the commercial operations that purchase our bulls.

Brent Carey was an integral part of our operation and marketing team in both the Merit and Cockburn operations. Merits since their sale in 1998 and joining Cockburns in 1999. Over the course of those 25+ years he became more than our auctioneer. Brent was a mentor, a critic, a cheerleader, and most importantly, a great friend. He always rode for the brand and his moral compass was true. Brent was ‘old school’. You had to earn his respect and the right to his advice. Compliments were sparse but when he handed one out it was earned and appreciated. When he spoke, we listened.
His wisdom was greatly appreciated. We miss him every day. Thanks to Peggy, Ryan, Jamie, and Blake for sharing him with us.
Welcome to our 31st annual bull sale and our 11th sale with our friends the Cockburns. Thank you so much to our customers. We are grateful for your trust, friendship and business, we will never take that for granted, your success is our goal and we are here to serve you!
Congratulations to you all for hanging in there to be able to capitalize on the industries record breaking prices, you deserve it !! Providing the world with the highest quality protein source is ultimately why we are all doing this.
Our family is committed every day to raising the best Angus cattle we can for our customers and the industry. Our cowherd was built and continues to evolve by implementing the best we can identify to enhance the traits that have made the Angus cow the industry standard. We will not compromise udder and foot quality, temperament, fertility, hair or eye appeal for the sake of “breed leading” EPD’s. These traits form the foundation for our success and ultimately that of our customers. Stockmanship does not require a computer! We spend a lot of time researching genetics and management to better our herd and ultimately the cattle we ofer to our customers. Our herd is managed in a very similar fashion to those of our customers, with the objective of identifying genetics that will enhance your herd and ultimately your long- term proftability.
As you study our ofering you will notice that we have utilized the best genetics we have identifed within our herd on both the top and bottom side of many of the bull’s pedigrees. There are many sons of our donors as well as sons of past feature bulls from our donors. There are also some new outcross sires represented with sons from many of our top cows. We feel that the bulls on ofer are as consistently sound and predictable as you will fnd anywhere. Please consider this your personal invitation, we would love to have you come and preview the ofering either here at Merit or at the Cockburn ranch prior to the sale. If you can’t see them in person, our reputable sales team is familiar with the ofering and our cow herd, but ultimately no one knows them like we do. We encourage you to seek their appraisal, but please ask us if you have any questions about the ofering or our services. Our word is our bond and our integrity is our most valuable asset.
We look forward to the opportunity to show you our ofering and discuss what our program can do for you.

EPD ABBREVIATIONS
EPD’s are a tool in the tool box that is available to assist you in making your genetic selection if you choose to use them. EPD’s incorporate the individual along with the performance/data of all its relatives.
CE: Calving ease. A higher number predicts more calving ease.
BW: Birth. A lower EPD predicts a lower birth weight.
WW: Weaning. Higher weaning EPDs predict heavier weaning weights.
YW: Yearling. Higher yearling EPDs indicate a greater expected yearling weight.
Higher yearling weights generally suggest heavier mature weights.
M: Milk. Milk EPD should be used to predict the milking ability of the daughters of the bull in question. Higher Milk EPDs project more milk.
Angus HD (Angus High Density) produces genomically enhanced EPDs with higher accuracies for non-parent animals. We use it primarily on our ET progeny. Angus HD is the CAA branded genomic test that is directly comparable to Angus GS and HD50K.
