Bull & Female Sale Friday,

March 1, 2013 1:00 p.m. Johnstone Auction Mart Ltd. Moose Jaw, Sask. 4 miles West of Moose Jaw on Trans-Canada Highway

Guest Consignor: 3D Simmentals

FOREWORD Welcome to LaBatte Simmentals 23rd Annual Spring Bull & Female Sale on Friday, March 1st, 2013 at Johnstone Auction Mart, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw, SK on #1 highway. How time flies! It just seems like yesterday that we had our 32nd Annual Sale and here we are preparing for the 33rd Annual. We’d really like to thank again all the bidders and buyers from last year’s sale and past sales for the continued support and effort you make each year to attend our sale, it’s really appreciated. Many of our repeat customers have become great friends to us and not just customers, we really value their friendships. Again, it’s a pleasure to have 3D Simmentals as our guest consignor. Dean and Monica and the girls are a great family and contribute a lot to this sale not just with their bulls but in their work and effort in making this sale successful. As always it’s great working with the Johnstone Auction Mart crew – Wayne, Dot, Scott and Cory, the Transcon Team who have worked with us for many, many years and our sale consultants Bouchard Livestock and Bohrson Marketing. A special thanks to Wilf Davis who has taken our sale pictures for many years. Wilf and Marnie keep our website up to date as much as possible as I’m sure they get frustrated with me getting information to them when I’m supposed to. Wilf has become a very important part of LaBatte Simmentals with his years of knowledge, professionalism and experience to draw from. And a special thank you to Wade Lund, our herdsman. Wade has been with us going on 11 years now and is a big part of the success we’ve had. And a first for Wade this year, he will be selling his first Simmental animal ever, a red bull, 281Z. Those of you that know Wade know he’s raised purebred Gelbvieh cattle for many years but we’re slowly getting him converted to Simmental. Thank you again Wade for you dedication to our program. The future has never looked brighter and more positive for the beef business. With cattle numbers way down in Canada, the United States and Mexico we are going to see good times in the cattle industry for many years to come. I believe we’ll see record prices for cull cows, feeder calves and fats. With an increasing world population and more people wanting to eat beef and a declining number of producers of beef, the future looks very promising. And, as I said before, Simmental genetics will play a huge part in the moving forward of the beef industry. Simmental’s high maternal traits, superior performance and excellent carcass values are in high demand. I really do believe that good times are coming for the commercial producer and you deserve it. Our bull sale offering this year consists of about 70 thick, meaty, beef bulls consisting of Reds, Blacks and Fleck influenced Fullbloods. The fullbloods are headlined by the Champ Wallace sons, many of these will be tested for the diluter gene so they can be used on black cows. Our red offering will consist of thick, meaty, Stubby sons, Specialist sons, powerful Hot Iron bulls and, of course, a few old reliable Accelerator sons. Our powerful set of black bulls, the most we’ve ever offered at our sale, are headlined by Springcreek Liner 56U sons, meaty Stubby sons and smooth, thick, Poker Face sons. The black offering will also consist of four exceptional black blaze faced bulls. Our female offerings consists of forty open heifers, including an exceptional group of reds and blacks and featuring our entire 2012 fullblood, open heifer crop, many of these being Full Fleck – an awesome set of heifers. If you are unable to attend the sale, give myself or Dean or any of the sale staff a call to have the sale offering evaluated for you. We can be reached prior to and sale day at Johnstone Auction Mart 306-693-4715 or on our cell phones: Barry 306-815-7900, Dean 306-591-2760. If you have any questions earlier, give us a call at our home numbers: Barry 306-969-4820, Dean 306-731-3850. We welcome your visit to our farms anytime to see the bulls and heifers firsthand, The coffee pot is always on. Join us Thursday night at the Heritage Inn, in our hospitality room, for some socializing and laughs. We look forward to seeing you on Friday, March 1st at Johnstone Auction Mart. Join us for a complimentary hot lunch prior to the sale and also after the sale for some socializing, refreshments and snacks. Best of luck in 2013 and hope to see you at the sale. Barry P.S. All six grandkids are doing great. The boys are playing hockey and the girls are in dance and Brownies. They’re selling a heifer in the sale again this year, IPU Bejjzs 118Z, (IPU Ms. Brodyn, Emry, Jory, Jenna, Zayne and Sierra 118Z). The grandkids would really like to thank Progressive Simmentals, Ike Wisse and family, for purchasing their heifer in last year’s sale.

IPU 148X full sister sold in Simmsational 2011 A powerful son of IPU Revolution and out of a super Red Label daughter. When people describe a bull that’s full of meat and potatoes, well that’s this guy. He’s super thick, deep, great haired, structurally sound and very loose made. He’s a full brother to the bred heifer that Bonchuk Farms purchased for $12,250 at the 2011 Simmsational sale from us. In last year’s sale a maternal brother sold to Foley Simmentals at Bengough, SK. What a set of calves this young fellow will produce. Whether producing bull calves, replacement heifers or thick, soggy steer calves, they will be the right kind. His dam is one of the favorite cows in our herd, excellent uddered, deep, long and dark red. This bull will be easy to find on sale day. He also possesses a great set of EPDs with a milk EPD of 11.1.

A smooth made S-Paw Red Warrior son out of a great uddered, first calving Exciter daughter. When Southpaw Simmentals were offering their herd for sale we asked if we could buy back a couple of the heifers they had purchased as open heifers at our 2011 Bull Sale. Tammy has a pretty good eye and bought a couple of our best so they let us purchase them back before they sold their cowherd. 2Z’s mother is out of a really good cow family that we like a lot. This bull had a 86 lb birth weight and should offer calving ease, growth and eye appeal.

IPU BEEF MAKER 46Z

A smooth made Beef Maker son out of a first calf Accelerator daughter. This young two year old did a great job raising 46Z as she had him unassisted and weaned him off at an actual weight of 865 lbs. This smooth made, clean fronted, long bodied Beef Maker son should calve easy with his 86 lb birth weight. He will add some style, performance and length to his progeny.

IPU RED STUBBY 56Z

A feature Stubby calf that we are very high on. 56Z was mothered by maybe the best two year old we have ever raised at our operation, whether red, black or fullblood. She was to go immediately into our transplant program but we had the misfortune of losing her on March 8th when her calf wasn’t quite two months -- she bloated and died, a pretty sad day at LaBatte Simmentals. The calf fended for himself for over two months before we found a Holstein cow to put him and two other calves on and later on, the Holstein raised him and one other calf to weaning. He still weaned off in early September at 860 lbs. I’ll always wonder just how good he could have been in September if his mother had raised him. She was a beautiful fronted, deep, thick, stylish, dark red Revolution 172U daughter with an absolutely perfect udder. Her mother is the IPU Pocahontas 105L cow, one of the very elite cows we’ve ever raised. The good news is we still have three full sisters to 222X. 56Z, in his own right, is very thick, deep, loose made and stylish. We think this calf has a lot of potential and future ahead of him. He DNA tested homozygous polled.

IPU HOT IRON 60Z

A powerful son of LFE Hot Iron and out of Red Touchless 69U. This young cow is fast becoming a front pasture female here at LaBatte Simmentals. Her first calf, a heifer, is in our herd, her 2011 bull calf was one of our high sellers, selling to Johnson Stock Farms, Lyall & Konleigh Johnson of Windthorst, in our sale last spring and this year, Hot Iron 60Z is one of our feature bulls again. Her two bull calves have weaned off her in early September at 1000 lbs and 980 lbs in the last two years. She’s a very moderate framed, feminine cow with a great udder. 60Z has been a standout since birth. He’s very thick, deep and big topped with huge testicles and lots of style. He looks like a herd bull. Wilf thinks we should be keeping this bull and using him ourselves. He’ll have many friends sale day.

IPU HOT IRON 66Z

A feature, red blaze faced Hot Iron son out of IPU Red Western 49X’s mother. Red Western was purchased out of our 2011 bull sale as our high selling red bull, selling to McMillen Ranching and Ashworth Farm & Ranch for $26,500. He has done a great job for them. A son of his along side his mother were Grand Champion Female for Ashworth Farm & Ranch and Flying F Ranch at the Ag-Ex Simmental show in Brandon in November 2012 and Supreme Champions over all breeds. The Red Western bull calf then went on to be Calf Champion and Grand Champion Simmental Bull at Ag-Ex also. Hot Iron 66Z, in his own right, is quite a bull; very thick, super deep sided, blaze faced and stylish with a great hair coat. Mothered by a super Accelerator daughter out of the famous Pocahontas 52N cow. We hope to have his homo test back by sale time. This guy will be one of the really good red blaze faced bulls to sell this spring.

His results for homo polled will be available in early February. These are the kind of bulls we strive to produce for our purebred and commercial customers.

He is a twin to a heifer, 4Z, that is just as good so we are going to keep her and try breeding her. She’s that good. We also have a full transplant heifer in the keeper pen and she’s just as powerful. The mother of this bull is a powerful, black blazed Hero daughter with an excellent udder and has been in our transplant program. The grandmother, a Mr Beef E141 daughter, was maybe one of the best black cows we’ve had. She was sold at 12 years of age and her udder was as perfect as when she was a two year old. A daughter of hers, IPU 120W, just had her first progeny sell at Simmsational, a bred heifer that fetched $16,250 from MI Simmentals of Okotoks, AB. This is a very proven pedigree, with a little Fleckvieh influence added in. 74Z tested hetero black and hetero polled.

If you are looking for a homo black, homo polled bull that is an absolute tank, look no further. This boy is full of meat and potatoes. He is super stout, super deep, has a great hair coat and great disposition. His mother is a great uddered, Extra Effort cow going back to our matron black cow, 304Y. What a meat machine.

LABATTE RIGHT TIME 200Z

Well here is a first for LaBatte Simmentals, selling a Purebred Angus bull in our Simmental EMULATION N BAR 5522 bull sale. Here’s the story – when we were at Remington Cattle Co.’s dispersal in October of N BAR EMULATION EXTAMF NHF CAF N BAR PRIMROSE 2424 2011 we bought a few Simmental cattle and looked through some of the Angus cows. That’s LEACHMAN RIGHT TIME 779510 AMF TEHAMA BANDO 155 AMF NHF CAF where I saw Remington Universe 118T and fell in love with her. She was a powerful cow, good LEACHMAN ERICA 0025 LEACHMAN ERICA 8058 SITZ ALLIANCE 6595 AMF NHF DMF CAF uddered and had a huge heifer calf sucking her that sold very well. As I wasn’t to be there SITZ ALLIANCE 9160 the next day I told Gary Rairdan to try and buy her for me. He told me if she has a heifer calf SITZ BLACKCAP EFFIE 4088 REMINGTON UNIVERSE 118T 1381116 out of Leachman Right Time you’ll pay for her with her first calf. I think that was a sales pitch SCA 3299 OF IDEAL 1418 REMINGTON UNIVERSE 12N as he went a little over budget and paid $8,000 for her. So she didn’t have a heifer calf, she SCA 26J UNIVERSE 1418 had a bull. He’s thick, deep and stylish with good feet and legs and has a great disposition. BW: 90. 205 day: 816. Another really good Champs Wallace son out of a Laredo daughter, again going back to the Marilynn cow family. His grandmother is the dam of IPU 88Z, lot 64, a powerful Wallace son also. This guy has a nice low birth weight of 86 lbs, is thick and deep, loose made and should sire some great calves. He is also DNA tested for the Diluter gene and does not carry it. What this means is you can breed black cows to him and you’ll get either black calves or red calves, no greys.

This middle of March Wallace son again is one of our favorites. He’s dark red, smooth made and has lots of muscle. His mother is one of the best fullblood cows that has walked our pastures. She will be having her ninth consecutive calf this year without ever missing. We’ve sold some high dollar bulls off her and had some excellent replacements we’ve put back in the herd. Tyler Farms got two of them and especially IPU 97X who we thought was the best Romano daughter we have ever raised. In last year’s sale one of the feature bulls sired by Romano was a 178M son, he’s a ¾ brother to 275Z, and sold to Butch Haugland of Ambrose, ND where he was put on black cows. Two Laredo sons have sold to Mark Land & Cattle Co. and another Laredo son to Potter Simmentals for $16,000. There is no guess work in this young middle of March fullblood. Don’t overlook him because of his age. Non-Diluter.

40 Open Heifers We are proud to make available these females in the 2013 open replacement heifer section of our sale. The nineteen Fleck influenced Fullblood heifers will be a special feature of this portion of the sale. Never before have we offered all the heifers from one segment of the calf crop.

Only because we have completed the sale of all our Fullblood cows to Tyler Farms of Cut Knife, SK are these heifers available. Our cowherd had grown to where it was overwhelming our facilities and we knew we had to make some changes. When Tyler Farms, represented by Darren Tyler and his sons, approached us about purchasing a sizeable group of Fullblood females, we decided this was the ideal opportunity to reduce numbers. We liked the fact the Fullblood cows, which had been a very important part of LaBatte Simmentals, would continue to be in one herd and managed and promoted by a younger generation of very enthusiastic and capable cattlemen. The 21 red and black heifers will rank as one of the top groups of purebred heifers we have ever offered at our annual spring sale. Selected from a group of well over 100 heifers, there will be a wide assortment of very up-todate bloodlines. These heifers are capable of following in the footsteps of many who have gone before and become major influences in the breed. All our sale heifers have been in a big pen on a wintering ration and will come to you ready to breed and develop. If you require any information regarding these females before the sale, we would welcome your call or farm visit.

Congratulations to good bull customers, Sentes Farms, Bill, Paul & Mark Sentes, Raymore, SK.

A different sale feature here in this young, March born Wallace daughter out of the Rhonda 33M cow who, quite possibly, is the best Fullblood to ever walk our pastures. She raised us many sale toppers, including IPU Laramie 6S, who was purchased for $17,000 by Prospect Hill of Ontario and now walks the pastures at Virginia Ranch at Cremona, AB. Also the $20,500 IPU Ms Rhonda 81R that was the high selling bred heifer at Simmsational selling to Cherry Creek Simmentals of Boissevain, MB and has done a great job for Ed & Lynn. Just give this heifer two more months age to catch up to those January heifers and she will be one of the best. Her mother, 33M, is coming with her tenth consecutive calf. Now that’s fertility! As you can tell Rhonda 265Z is definitely one of our very favorites!

As mentioned before in our comments on the black blaze 217Z heifer in the sale, we purchased a ½ interest in Mr Bodybuilder 66S (Danny) from Meyers Simmental as a mature bull. He is thick and blood red with just a really nice blaze on his head, moderate in frame and eye catching. We’ve never used a sire that puts the blaze on like he does and makes them as dark red as he does. This 188Z is really a feature heifer with her color and blaze face and the fact that she is a thick, deep and angular and just a brood cow in the making.

Well, the grandkids have another heifer to put in the sale! Their Lazy-Bar B cow had another heifer this year, a really good Crocket female, who has lots of power, middle, thickness and a real good hair coat. When you get a little on in age, grandkids are very special to their Grandma’s and Grandpa’s, they bring so much laughter, surprises and joy to you. Every one of them is very special in their own way and every one is different in their own way. I have to admit Grandma is kind of their favorite. When I go to their place they say “Hi Grandpa!, where’s Grandma?” So Grandma and I hope we can help the kids out a little by giving them a cow, they learn to share and hopefully they will have a little money to help them with their education. The grandkids would really like to thank Progressive Simmentals for buying their heifer in last year’s sale.

A really good LFE Hot Iron daughter off a good Red Teddy daughter. 84T had an exceptional Accelerator son sell in last year’s sale to Mark Meier of Morris Creek Angus, Mount Vernon, SD. Ms. Hot Iron 121Z is really nice made, feminine fronted, great haired and should make a great young female.

BW: 99. 205 day: 902. EPDs: 4.1 5.0 41.3 72.4 4.3 25.8 5.2 A true sale feature! If you’re looking for a black blazed faced bull to add that distinctive look to your calf crop, then Momentum deserves serious consideration. Momentum is a very impressive individual. He is extremely smooth made and very eye appealing. He is very, very wide topped with tremendous spring and depth to his rib. He possesses so much depth, width and muscle expression in his quarter that he is sure to impress you. He has loads of hair and a disposition that makes him a pleasure to be around. His dam is a heavy milking cow that has been a very consistent producer for us and has sons and daughters working in herds across western Canada. She herself is a very easy doing quiet cow that is moderate framed, deep with tremendous rib capacity. His sire, 3D Blk Full Throttle 483X, is a bull we are very excited about. When his calves started coming last spring, they surely impressed us as they came easy, had above average vigor at birth and displayed so much length, width and eye appeal even at a few days of age. After watching his first calf crop develop, it’s safe to say they get better and better each day. Everyone who attended the Checkers Sale this past fall will remember the Full Throttle heifer calf 3D Miss Blk Queen 136Z. Blk Queen was the very first Full Throttle offspring to be offered for sale. She was named Grand Champion female in the Checker’s Show and later sold for $20,000 to Ashworth Farm and Ranch. All the Full Throttle offspring, whether it be males or females, have possessed that eye appeal, extra width, top and muscle that truly does make them stand out. We are very excited about the future of this young herdsire. 3D Simmentals will be retaining 100 doses of semen for in herd use only.

A powerful son of Full Throttle that is sure to impress you come sale day. He combines eye appeal with explosive growth in a very attractive package. Maverick is long spined, wide topped, deep ribbed and loaded with muscle in his rear quarter. He has a tremendous hair coat and has a quiet disposition. We cannot say enough good things about the cow family that is the back bone of his pedigree. 3D Miss Monique 47M goes back to the foundation flush cow X-T Miss Destiny 73K who was our leading feature donor here at 3D for so many years. The milking ability combined with udder quality in the entire cow family is second to none. Miss Monique has produced our feature bull in each of the last three years. Maverick is no accident with Full Throttle as his sire and the cow family behind him he is truly bred for greatness. He has a very high probability of being homo polled and is a true sale feature!
