Please accept this as your personal invitation to the annual Montana Maternal Revival Sale. Teaming up with our dear friends at Coleman Angus in hosting back-to-back events, it promises to be a great couple of days of Angus cattle, fellowship and hospitality in beautiful Western Montana.

As you turn the pages of this sale book, we hope that you identify three common themes:

1. Our reverence for the Angus cow. The Angus cow is the lifeblood of the beef industry. She has provided a living for us and countless other ranching families. Ranges across the country were once dominated by other breeds until ranchers discovered the maternal value within the Angus cow. The ability of the Angus cow to be resilient, productive and fertile in some of this land’s most challenging environments, while delivering a calf that is competitive in the feedlot and inherently possessing carcass quality is what made Angus the number one beef breed in the world.

2. The intentionality of each and every thing we do at Montana Ranch. From intentionally stacking “7” of the right kind of cows into each pedigree to the comprehensive health program and the 100% forage diet of the sale cattle, we’ve done everything possible to deliver a product which can thrive in most every environment. We leave nothing to chance when it comes to providing our customers with the best value in the business.

3. We have left no stone unturned in providing access to the best we have. From the young cow-calf pairs to the spring-bred heifers and the summer-born heifers, we are offering females that are the product of our long-term breeding strategy. It is not easy seeing these girls leave the program.

Please plan to join us in Big Sky country as we celebrate the Angus cow! Plan to come early to get the full Montana Ranch experience, network with other Angus breeders and view the program up close. From the cool, crisp air and the beautiful colors to the sight of Angus cattle out grazing, Autumn at Montana Ranch is spectacular. While in our area, we also encourage you to explore the beauty and majesty of nature at our backdoor at places like Glacier National Park, the National Bison Range and Flathead Lake. Until then, the cattle will be available for viewing at the ranch and videos of the cattle may be viewed at MontanaRanchAngus.com. We look forward to seeing you.

Sincerely, David and Seana Brown

The Montana Ranch program is centered on the Angus cow and her ability to REPRODUCE regularly, efficiently RAISE her calf, and to LAST a long time with a minimum of intervention or assistance. Sounds pretty simple, right? Unfortunately, in the rush to pack more and more terminal traits into the cattle, seedstock providers in most all breeds have forsaken the most basic, essential maternal traits. The grassroots bull buyers/commercial cow-calf producers are left holding the receipts for this pursuit.

What is the role of a seedstock provider? It depends on the customer, but ultimately, our role is to provide a consistent and predictable animal without problems. The right BALANCE of MATERNAL FUNCTION, STRUCTURAL SOUNDNESS, FERTILITY and PRODUCTIVITY will keep them on the right track where incremental changes in increased performance, reduced mature size and increased carcass merit can be realized without causing harm.

Bred for Balance different BY DESIGN

Creating cattle which are consistent and predictable with the right BALANCE is not complicated. Contrary to much of the seedstock industry where planning the next generation is done while poring over spreadsheets full of EPDs, genomic scores and sale reports, our breeding philosophy is exceedingly straightforward. We’re certainly not anti-science nor anti-data. In fact, we place the most emphasis on maternal inheritance from cows which are PROVEN, PREPOTENT and PRODUCTIVE based on their actual production. Simply stated, we strategically weave complementary dams into pedigrees which have demonstrated the ability to pass on the desirable traits time and time again with a high degree of consistency and predictability.

This focus on maternal inheritance extends well beyond the cows roaming our pastures. It also includes the sires, both owned and non-owned, which are introduced to make the next generation. For a sire to see use in the program, he must be backed by dams which have demonstrated that same ability to transmit the right BALANCE of MATERNAL FUNCTION, STRUCTURAL SOUNDNESS, FERTILITY and PRODUCTIVITY to her son.

MontanaPROGRAM the

By utilizing the best science in combination with good, old-fashioned cow sense and intentionality in building pedigrees, we are able to produce cattle with a bredin balance of optimum performance and maternal excellence.

Productive Predictable Balance

Proven Optimum

MaternalCHECKLIST Montana

Fertility: Fertility is exponentially more influential on profit than any other trait. While fertility is closely linked to management, there are lines of cattle which breed earlier and more regularly than others. Those are the kind that keep you in business.

Structural Soundness: Our genetic selection starts from the ground up. Cattle must have the ability to travel and forage to be efficient. Anything less than structurally sound legs and hooves is unacceptable.

Moderated-Mature Size: Ultimately the most profitable and efficient cows are those which produce the highest percentage of their bodyweight in their calves while requiring less feed. As cited by Dr. Rick Rasby of Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln, there is an approximate 10% annual feed savings and a 10% stocking advantage for every 200 lb. decrease of mature weight of cows.

Carcass: Who doesn’t like a great steak?

Marbling is an added bonus only if all of the key convenience and fundamental traits are bred in to the cow herd. The pursuit of extremes in carcass traits and the $Beef bio-economic index used by breeders has, however, led to a proliferation of cattle unsuited for many cow-calf operations. With growth, carcass weight and lower fat figuring into the calculation, it’s easy to see how this index can have deleterious effects on making the right kind of cows.

Maternal Productivity/Function/Efficiency:

It all hinges on a cow being able to birth and raise their calves with little human interaction and intervention. Easy calving cows which get their newborn up and going, which wean 50+% of their bodyweight and have problem-free udders for their entire life are the benchmark.

Longevity: Research estimates that only one-third of beef cows last in the herd until they become profitable. Cattle that regularly calve early in the season, that are structurally sound and have problem-free udders have a distinct advantage in longevity.

Growth/Performance: While most producers have selected for increased growth, weaning weights in commercial cow-calf herds have remained static for the last twenty years. At the same time, mature weights have increased dramatically. Timely expression of these higher growth genetics is limited by feed resources. Selection for higher growth than the environment can support only results in increased feed costs and increased open cows. By placing simultaneous downward pressure on mature size in combination with optimum levels of weaning and yearling growth, you can make gains in performance while maintaining or decreasing mature size.

When we think about prepotency for maternal function and efficiency, type/kind or performance, its usually judged by a cow’s ability to produce superior progeny from a wide variety of matings.

Lucy 0032 is one such cow that has proven an ability to make the right kind of progeny, whether it is from a mating to a more maternally-oriented calving-ease sire such as True North which resulted in Lucy 2004, or from the mating to the growth and muscle sire Barricade which produced Lucy 3006, the fantastic female selling as Lot 11, and her full brothers Loadmaster 3007 and LR Baritone.

SPRING COVE GRANT 200K

The Right Sire at the Right Time • Introducing Spring Cove Grant 200K, the $400,000 all-time record seller of the historic 105-year-old Spring Cove Ranch. And when I saw Grant on the hoof, he hit me hard. All About COWS

Maternal Inheritance

POWER The of Seven SEVEN

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is the circular chromosome found inside the cellular organelles called mitochondria. Located in the cytoplasm, mitochondria are the site of the cell’s energy production and other metabolic functions.

No matter how far back you go, mtDNA is always inherited only from the mother. If you went back three generations in a pedigree, you’d see that the nuclear DNA is inherited from 7 bulls and 7 cows. The mtDNA, on the other hand, would have come from only one of those 7 cows.

In every three-generation pedigree, there are 7 cows which contribute genes to an animal. What if all 7 cows are prepotent and consistent for type, kind, function and productivity?

Prepotent
