What an exciting time to be in the livestock industry. This past spring saw a bull sale season that no one anticipated to be as strong as it was, with a commercial cattle market that seems to find new levels each week, and futures that have created a buzz in the industry. It does look as though not only the cattle industry, but the entire agriculture community is in for good times over the next several years. My hats off to all of you, who stayed the course, and persevered. Hard work, dedication, and determination, does have rewards. One of the simple rewards will be found on Friday, August 24th at Anchor D Ranch, as we invite you to attend our 5th Annual “Pasture Treasures Female Sale” hosted in conjunction with our Annual Customer Appreciation Day. This has become an event we anxiously anticipate every year, where we combine good customers, good friends, and good cattle, for some good fun. No, this is not the traditional fall sale, as our sale heifers will come right off of pasture in grass flesh to be presented to you in their working clothes. What you see is what you’ll get. Also keep in mind how early these pictures have to be taken to make things roll. The cattle have just nicely got out of mucky pens, and onto grass, so they haven’t had much of a chance to get their “mojo’s goin”, but they will look the part sale day. Our feed back has been very positive, as these heifers have lots of time to blend into their new homes, are able to travel in nice weather, not heavy in calf, with very minimal stress. A couple of our main focuses in our program is breeding for fertility, and longevity. The way these heifers are presented, they will contribute to your breeding programs for the maximum time allowable. I could be wrong, but from our early visits, I don’t think we will see as many females offered for sale this fall. Your early purchases may be some of the best dollars invested this fall. This year marks the 30th year since the initial registered cattle purchase for Anchor D Ranch, and the 28th bull calf crop to hit the ground. We are very greatful for the loyal customers and friendships we have created over the years, thank-you! It really doesn’t seem like it’s been that long, and it has been a great journey to this point. To mark this milestone we did want to do something special, not only in the sale but the appreciation day as well. There are some absolute “Treasure’s” to be found in this year’s offering, as we dug very deep into our program to offer some of the very best for this milestone event, including EVERY POLLED FULLBLOOD bred heifer. There will also be some outstanding genetics from our guest consignors as well, and of course this sale wouldn’t be complete without the Treasure Lot. For our customer appreciation day the usual fun will be expected, with recording artist “Tera Lee” wrapping up the night. Be sure to set aside the dates of the August 24th weekend. This is an event the whole family can enjoy. If you wish to bring your RV’s or grab a room in town you’re certainly welcome to do so, as we will be touring cattle on the Saturday as well. It is a true family event, so be sure to bring the kids and enjoy a great weekend filled with fun, friends, and cattle. We look forward to seeing you there. 2

When we selected sale heifers, “Alma” was selected as not only one of the best this year, but perhaps one of the best we have ever produced. It’s tough to part with these front end heifers, but that’s also what keeps our name out there and customers coming back. A full sister by blood was selected in last years’ sale as one of the high sellers, by Bar 5 Stock Farms. There has been a significant shift in our bull battery this year, and the emphasis was to be keeping more daughters from the old herd bulls who have moved on. When we picked “Alma”, “Stride” was slated for one more year, but that ended up not being the case. If we would have realized then, what we know now, she may not have made the sale pen. We will feel the void of this tremendous heifer in our program, and certainly encourage anyone looking for that next potential donor cow to look no further, as she will be one of the future matrons of the breed, and a true product of a 30 year breeding program.

She is a beautiful put together female, who does have a bright future. Her dam “Kirbie” is most notably known as the dam of “Porter’s Reserve”. She is a cow that has tons of capacity, volume, and power, but maintains style and femininity. Her paternal grand dam is “Saphire”, who I have boldly stated will take over top spot as the replacement to “Dorothy”. The credentials of “Kendra” are huge, and she will be a female that visitors will adore, and certainly has the potential to become a cornerstone female.

This is a real tear jerker for us to sell. “Fassa” is a heifer that I’ve admired from birth, and where she would take us to in our polled program. No word of a lie, if we hadn’t decided to sell all the polled Fullblood bred heifers this year, there is no way she was going anywhere! We were so fortunate to have been able to purchase the great “Elexis” cow from the Small’s, and I honestly feel that “Fassa” could be a follow up. She has the potential to take the polled genetics another step further. That opportunity is now yours. I don’t feel its right to retain a flush, but would certainly be interested in purchasing one from her if the new owner if they so desires to sell one. Our AI pen was extremely small this year, due to an extremely busy schedule, and wet, wet spring. This is one we took the extra time on to breed her extra special, to our high selling $25,000 “Imax” bull. “Fassa” is the total package.

We really wanted to keep more “Razzmatazz & Stride” daughters, but still having them properly represented. “Leah” didn’t get added into the sale pen until after preg testing, when we had lost a couple feature lots. This is the last calf from “478H” who was as solid of producer here for us, as any cow that ever graced our pastures. There is no doubt in my mind, that “Leah” will always produce above and beyond, as her mother, and all of her sisters have done for us. She is a heifer that comes directly from our keeper pen, and I expect will do great things. Trust me when I tell you, you won’t go wrong by purchasing her, as she will keep the cheques rolling in. As an added bonus she also has the amazing “Razzmatazz” disposition. A very tough heifer to part with.

“Scarlet” is a dandy heifer, that defiantly stood out as a calf. Her mother has produced a carbon copy to her again this year, and is a heifer that has already been noticed by visitors. I feel as though she is one of the best “Mojito” daughters, and has a completely different twist to her pedigree, than any of the others. She is also the type of individual that “Barbossa” really excelled on in his first calf crop. “Scarlet” is bred right, looks right, and mated right, for a winning combination. She will be very easy to find sale day, and has the potential to be at the front end of this year’s offering. An extremely solid choice.

We only have a couple of these “Remington” daughters, but they are wicked good. “Zena” has a very neat blend of genetics, and will no doubt be one of those females that you should be able to breed to a host of bulls, and always count on a very good calf. She should be moderate framed, and be super thick as a mature female, that you may very well want in the front pasture for everyone to see. We typically keep these buckskin heifers for our own program, so here is your opportunity to have one from the keeper pen. Also being bred back to “Barbossa”, just offers another whole new dimension to this already super package.

If she won’t produce them, then nothing will. Our main objective is to sell early maturing cattle that can get from pasture to plate in the quickest time possible, with the least amount of inputs, and the biggest dividends. “Jamie” fits this objective to a “T”. When producing bulls, this is the type of female we rely on, and she is built to be in someone’s herd for many, many years. A big dark red gorgeous heifer that has endless potential.

Her grandmother “Daisy” was Mackenzie’s very first cow, and was super productive for her. Well now that Mackenzie is in 4-H, she has become quite the little competitor, so “Gloria” is not actually her consignment, as she did a bit of horse trading for her new 4-H heifer. This is a heifer that comes from one of those cow families you hope produces bulls. I’m not sure as to how many bulls came from this cow family, but I don’t ever remember culling one, and they were always at the front end of the pack. Chad & Michelle Beagle purchased a sister to her dam last year, and appears to be raising a bull calf much like what we’ve just described. Don’t be afraid to put an extra star by her, she will be worth the doe!

This is a great Polled heifer that goes back to our great old “Image” cow we purchased as a calf from the Richmond dispersal. Although she never made it to the donor pen, when you look back at some of the outstanding cattle we have managed to produce, this cow is in many of their pedigrees. The other extremely neat thing with this heifer is you will note that she has lots of power in her pedigree, but interestingly this is a cow family that moderates birth weight. A full brother is being used on heifers at Blushrose Simmentals. That’s a winning combination, and being bred back to our newest heifer bull “Yukon”, who we purchased from Eagle Ridge Simmentals, just makes this package that much hotter. Look for her to produce a polled baby from this winning combination.

She is smooth polled, heavily pigmented, very stylish, and correct. All winter she was a heifer I noticed in a pen of over a 100, which indicates something to me, she’s the right type. Every so often we end up with that one female who finds herself being a momma cow before she was supposed to. “Tanner’s” mom was one of those teenage pregnancies, although it’s not what we’re striving for, it certainly does indicate how fertile some of these little females are. “Tanna” is as picture perfect female as you will find at our Ranch, and is a female that I would gladly produce many more just like her. “Tanner” is the first female to sell for us from “Venom”. He made an impressive debut in our spring bull sale with 3 sons averaging $7650, two of which were from first calvers. Mackenzie’s 4-H steer was also sired by “Venom” from another first calver, and went on to be named interclub reserve champion steer. About 3/4 of his calves also came polled. The moral of the story is there is a lot of potential in this package.

When I was typing footnotes, I questioned why I put “Vienna” in the sale. Not the prettiest in the offering, or the first to be found, however you can never go wrong with a “Rogar” daughter. They are truly productive, and if you’ve ever owned one you’ll know exactly what I mean. I’m not suggesting she will be a front pasture female, nor do I expect her to be, all the more reason I feel as if she may be of more value to us. I encourage you to look beyond the cover of this book and truly get the meaning. Don’t buy her for what you see today, rather than what she will produce in the future. Being a granddaughter of “Herlinde”, and from “Rogar” certainly indicates a very marketable pedigree, and potential to raise some great ones. A very special opportunity will be found in “Vienna”.

“Viv” is from one of Karen’s favorite first calvers. She is a sweet little “Rawlins” daughter that has a great attitude towards life. Every day is good for her, and she is a producer. As a second calver she has an absolute knockout bull calf by “Barbossa”, and as luck would have it, look who this heifer is bred to. You guessed it, “Barbossa”, with one significant difference. With “Viv” being polled, yep the potential for a homozygous polled calf is there. We have taken a lot of the guess work out of things for you here, and we are banking on what can be produced. If everything turns out the way I think it could, you may more than double your investment on this first calf. Not likely the high seller here, but a real solid investment no doubt.

Never say Never. “Shawanda” is a heifer I had zero intentions of selling. In fact I ranked her as our #1 “Mojito” daughter last year, and I had full intentions on retaining a few more of his daughters this year. However, searching for numbers, found me gravitating back to “Shawanda” for another of our feature females. Her dam is a flawless “Stride” daughter, and has a very unique bottom side to her pedigree. Some of our best genetics have “Solway Adonis” in them, and you will find him on both sides of her pedigree. Carcass traits will be very evident in her, and her offspring. Also being bred back to Barbossa just solidifies this whole package. She will rank among some of the best found this fall.

“Sedalia” is from just a first calving “Razzmatazz” daughter. Her mother is a cow that I feel is our very best “Native Son” daughter. We have marketed several full brothers to her, and they are always in hot demand. “Sedalia” herself will be a moderate framed, easy fleshing female. Her sire “Rawlins”, did a great job for us as a calving ease bull, but upped the antie, as his daughters are awesome brood cows, and his sons were always very easy to market. I encourage you to study the pedigree in this female, as it is the who’s who, and she will be a great solid producer. For dollars invested sale day, this may be the one that will reap the biggest dividends.

She goes back to the great “Image 21J” cow family, and will be a female that will be a rock solid producer. She has that look about her to me to be a low maintenance, problem free, high dollar producing female. I would also say she is one of those individuals that you should be able to breed to virtually any bull and expect good results. No she doesn’t have a bunch of extra chrome, bells and whistles. She is straight goods, but your free advice is stated at the beginning of her write up. She is one that was destined to stay in our own herd, I can’t endorse her any more than that.

“Venus” will be the first calf offered from “Vanesssa”, who was one of the high sellers two years ago, selling to CDR Simmentals. They only have a few females, which are on shares with us, but they have done a masterful job in selection, and “Venus” comes from a cow family, with as proven track record as any. There are only two “Rawlins” daughters offered in the sale this year. The daughters we have from him in our herd are phenomenal producers. Very easy fleshing, moderate framed, lots of milk, and very fertile. The “Rawlins” heifers may not be the shiniest sale day, but trust me they do shine with that baby at side. I must admit “Rosel” is a heifer I actually didn’t really notice how good she was as a calf, until we started touring people through the pastures last summer. After the 3rd or 4th breeder asked about her, I went back and took a more serious look. Wow, they were right, and from that moment the decision was made that she would be a sale heifer. Her dam is an awesome young “Montana” daughter, going back to one of our Arnold Brother cows. As a first calver she produced a $9000 bull, and “Rosel” is just her second calf. “Rosel” should be an easy fleshing heifer that should possess lots of style, muscle shape, calving ease, ampule performance, and as an added bonus is also smooth polled. A very nice female that will be very easy to come up with a long list of bulls she will work with.

A true sale feature, for our 30th anniversary, in the breed. We purchased “Tabitha’s” dam as the second high seller from Ferme Gagnon’s production sale, as a bred heifer. This is her first calf, and she is a carbon copy of her mother. Trust me if it wasn’t for the fact that we decided to offer all the polled Fullblood heifers in the sale, she would be going nowhere. You will note she is bred a bit later, not her fault; we were going to AI her to “Imax” to make her the true sale feature. I missed her heat, and we decided to turn her in with “Barbossa” to get her bred early enough. Pretty solid back up plan. I’m not so sure that it wouldn’t be worthwhile for her new owner to mate her back to “Imax”. The thought of what this combination brings gives me goose bumps, as everything in the mating will be right, and the color factor could be your license to print money!! Not much more needs to be said about “Tabitha”, and her unlimited potential, as she pretty well says it all for herself. 15

As mentioned earlier, I found it way tougher to sort through sale heifers this year, because I wanted to keep so many and this is another. She may not be the first to catch your eye sale day, and typically those are the ones I like to keep for ourselves. “Adrianna” has all the potential to be as good as any in the offering. She has a fabulous blend of genetics, that should make her excel in any area, but I really feel her potential will be noticed when she starts producing bull calves for her new owner. The “Stride-Razzmatazz” combination has been extremely successful for us, and now with both of these great herd bulls no longer with us, their daughters are just that much more valuable to us.With all of those great attributes don’t forget about the bottom of this pedigree, going back to a full sister by blood to “Karl & Moses”. “Yolanda” almost made the sale last year, as she was a standout in my mind, but with our bull wrecks we had last spring her mother was in a group where we knew she was bred late, so we decided to hold “Yolanda” as one of our feature lots for this year. Not a mistake, as just like wine she just gets better with age. She is very classy, has that extra length we come to expect from the “TNT” offspring, and lots of volume. Her mother has lots of capacity, is very broad topped, and extremely easy fleshing. I think this is a really good mating, and not only looks the part, but has an impeccable pedigree to back her as well. Also note she is mated to “Barbossa” so there is potential for a homozygous polled baby in the oven. Yes I stated we are selling all the polled Fullblood heifers in this anniversary sale, and this is one that was designed to be a headliner.

It is interesting how age can play such a big factor in calves. A month can make such a difference. “Lydia” is one of the youngsters, but having said that last year was found by virtually everyone who toured pastures. The decision was more or less made then, that if she demanded that much attention as a baby, she would have to be in the sale. We retained her full sister the year before, and she has a great bull calf that will certainly be seen February 8, in our spring bull sale. I brag about the great things that “Dorothy & Herlinde” have contributed to our herd, but not to be forgotten is “Desiree”. At the time I’m writing these footnotes she is still out grazing the pastures, at age 18. She’s retired now, but she is still as sound as they come. Longevity is likely a trait we don’t stress enough. She hasn’t found the fame like the other two have, as she was never promoted as much, but trust me this cow family will produce with the best of them.

Here is a big powerful performance heifer, in “Roxie”. She is from a great “Majesty” daughter we purchased from Elliott’s in the Bighorn Parkland Sale. She was an easy purchase for us as she goes back to their herd matron “Fiona”, and you can never go wrong with a “Majesty” daughter. Look for big performance here, with lots of milk. She will wean off the heavy weights in the fall. I really wanted to keep all the “Razzmatazz” daughters for ourselves, as he has moved on to his new home at Pine Creek Simmentals, but I also knew that wasn’t physically possible. So there are only a few in the sale from him, but we wanted the right ones in the sale to represent this great bull, and all he has done for our herd. He polled about 35% of his calves, and they appear to have an abundance of growth, lots of thickness, style, and well colored. He has matured to be an impressive individual, and should continue to do so, as he ages. A big selling feature to me was the strength of the cow family that backs him, out of “Barbarella” who I personally feel is one of Ferme Gagnon’s elite cows. Put together right in every aspect, very low maintenance, and super productive. We have a full sister to “Pulse” in our own program, and she follows the same pattern, much as I anticipate “Pulse” will do as well. Due to significantly smaller Purebred numbers, we rely much more on AI in this program; however we have really upped the steaks with the purchase of “Wolfman”. We didn’t physically see her get bred to “Wolfman” but he certainly was suggesting she was in April 21, which the ultra sound would also indicate. This will be the only female in the offering bred to this tremendous bull, and wow, what a package this will be. The neat thing here is this is a cow family that already possesses some outcross Fleckvieh genetics to the rest of the purebred industry, and then mated back full Fleckvieh as well. We did the same thing on her mother a couple years ago, breeding her to “Picasso”, resulting in a solid, dark red, high % Fleckvieh, polled female with a new twist of pedigree. She has developed into a phenomenal cow that is admired by many, and has a very unique potential to create something different. We are now giving you the very same advantage in this female in the mating to “Barbossa”. I know for a fact that these good baldy bulls are very hot in demand, lots of opportunity here.

When we were sorting through bulls this spring to use on these heifers, the more I thought about it the more we felt “Stubby” was the right choice. His offspring have been so widely accepted, and we really felt as though it upped the antie on our heifers, and showed what direction we want our relatively young purebred program to be headed.“Catalena” is from a beautiful solid red female, that we purchased from Movald’s, and she has really developed into a great cow. A very good possibility of being on display sale day with her “Wolfman” bull calf at side. “Catalena” will continue to develop, and become an outstanding female, and once again mated to “Stubby” adds another whole new dimension.

Exposed to LFE Wolfman 395X April 20 to May 22, due January 16, 2013. Ultra sounded safe to AI. We were going to initially try and keep many more purebred heifers this year, and the baldies were all going to stay home. The number sort indicated differently, and “Bliss” is a heifer that I would dare say may be the sleeper in the purebred string. She won’t be a heifer you need to break the piggy bank to own, but I encourage you to look into the future as to what this female can produce. I really think her breeding to “Stubby” adds a lot more potential as well. Her mother was a great buy for us from Bonchuk Farms, and has tons of power. I really think “Bliss” is going to mature that much more and be a female that will be appreciated much more when she does mature. Don’t miss this opportunity, could be a great buy.

Treasure Chest Lot

Every year one of our feature lots is the “Treasure Chest Lot”. We have had lots of fun with it in the past, and it does certainly add a degree of pre-sale excitement. This year will be no different, with a bounty being awarded to at least one lucky person who is able to unscramble the riddle, and figure out what it is. Your clues are; It’s something anyone can use, young or old it’s truly unique. It is without doubt one of the coolest thing we have ever offered for sale. It’s a bit like the saying something old, something new, something borrowed something blue, with a twist. Something old, two things new, nothing borrowed, something blue.

Stonez Miss Yanu is my first pick from our heifer pen. We purchased her father from Virginia Ranch a couple years ago to help add some preformance to our cow herd, and he is doing just that. This heifer has loads of thickness lots of depth and she has a great disposition! Take a look at her there is no need to go on, just look at her for you self you will see the quality! She is bred to our calving ease bull Anchor D Twenty X (Legend son). The calf out of this heifer will be superb!

Once again we would like to thank Dan and Karen for inviting us to take part in their sale, it’s truly an honor. Many of you may remember this heifer from last year’s sale as she was offered as a choice lot with her three quarter sister. I had full attentions on keeping this heifer but after many days of convincing I finally gave in and agreed to offer her for sale once again. Lady Luck is going to be a producer! Being from a Marcus cow and sired by our heifer maker “Warner”, I can insure you she will have tones of milk all wrapped up in a clean and tidy udder. Disposition, dark cherry red, peaked head polled and being bred to Anchor “T” Impact himself, what more can I guy ask for? Whether she lies down and has a bull or a heifer, the ticket she is carrying may just pay for herself in the first year. The guess works done, take a chance on “Lady Luck”.

47Y is a broody female by Artemis. This is a strong pedigree. 47Y’s grandmother is 103H who was the mother of PRL Ledger. Ledger left us with some great females over the years. 47Y’s mother (66S) is a reproduction machine. There will be few females sold this year that will have as strong a maternal backing plus sound conformation. She is calving early to LFE 3091X who is a Shearforce x Blackedge; I would expect a vigorous polled calf that should be excellent. This is a great opportunity to buy a proven red pedigree with some Fleckvieh in the background.

87Y is an easy fleshing feminine female that displays a lot of promise. Strong maternally with Magnitude and Canadian on the bottom side of her pedigree; this heifer offers a lot of breeding potential. Red Bull females look quite good and provide new blood to an already different pedigree here. 87Y is one of my favorite heifers this year out of a prolific workhorse. I have expectations for this female to perform – put her to the test.

127Y has more than 500 registered relations in Canada and more again worldwide. Regent probably the most universal Fleckvieh bull to date. He has the tendency to make individuals with eye appeal and traits that keep them producing. 127Y has a balanced profile in a compact package. While 127Y is a smaller package her ultrasound data puts her in the top tier of our heifers. She is big ribbed and has a good degree of interstitial fat. 127Y will be a strong contributor at her new home and I am sure I can find some Regent semen to go with her.
