Once again at PLCC, we have brought 4 heifers that represent our breeding program. We are confident that they are bred to industry leading calving ease genetics. Here is a heavy muscled, big broody heifer. She is incredibly long spined and comes from a beautiful uddered cow. This powerful heifer has herd bull maker written all over her. We have been very happy with the few Roosevelts that we have. She is AI bred for a Feb. 1 calf from our 2023 high selling red baldy bull, PERKS Kinetic 2010K, that combines the calving ease of Triple Play and Captain Blaze. Hope for a good, baldy calf here.

ow, did 2023 ever fly by! Its hard to believe that fall is once again upon us and its time to round up the cows and start preparing for another calving season.

This year we have a solid group of heifers coming to town for the 43rd annual Pembina Triangle Sale. The reds are all thick and fancy females carrying services to our new calving ease sire BEE Owens.

He’s a bull that we anticipate will calve easy on heifers leaving us with dark red functional calves. The four full blood heifers we have are all polled, with 2 of them being homo polled. These heifers are backed by foundation cows in our herd and are ones we are confident will mature into big broody females. Oakview Hank was used on the majority of the fullbloods again as we continue to be impressed with the ease in which he calves and look forward to his daughters injecting the ideal uddder that his dam possessed back into the herd.

Here is a heifer that we admire. Oakview Kassidy is a Tycoon daughter with a quiet disposition backed by one of the matron cows in our herd. KOP Bengie 6P, the maternal grandmother of this heifer needs no introduction, and the impact she has had in our herd goes without saying. The Bengie descendants all milk hard, produce exceptional calves and possess the same longevity and sound food structure as Bengie herself. Kassidy has two maternal sisters that are both turning into very functional young cows with bright futures in our herd. Kasey is a heifer that we are confident will mature into a cow that has a long and productive life ahead of her. She is a moderate framed cow with great rib shape and depth. When we acquired Carhartt a few years back at the WLB dispersal sale, our vision for him was to leave us with functional performance females that would be broody hard-working cows. He hit the nail on the head with this one. Kalli is a very long spined female with overall balance. Kenzie is the first Grandslam female we have sold and what a way to start off! Grandslam is a homopolled performance bull we purchased from Double Bar D to add some extra punch to our polled fullblood herd. This cherry red female is heavily pigmented.

She has huge goggles, and is red all the way to the hoof on her fronts with small socks on the back. She has extraordinary length of spine that she combines perfectly with exceptional depth of quarter and spring of rib. Kenzie is a heifer that we should be keeping as she checks all the boxes that we are looking to fill.

Kendra is another smooth polled female with a beautiful udder starting to develop. This big barrelled heifer goes back to the Pixie cow family that has left us with so many top end females that milk hard, have natural thickness and consistently produce sought after bulls and females alike. Kaylee is the second smooth polled Shamrock female we have on offer. Kaylee, like the previous heifer is out of the great Pixie cow family. One of Pixie’s more prolific, cherry red, consistent daughters was Sadie, who is the grand dam of Kaylee. Like Sadie and Pixie, we expect Kaylee to be one of those females that just keeps getting better with age. She has a tidy udder developing with great teat placement. She is a thick yet moderate framed female with excellent feet and a deep-set quarter. A couple years ago we had a smooth polled powerful heifer named Oakview Hazel 32H entered in the Pembina Triangle sale who created a lot of interest leading up the sale. Unfortunately she had an injury that prevented her from making it to the sale, so we kept her in herd. Katy is the heifer she was carrying. Like her mother, Katy is a clean fronted, smooth shouldered female that we feel will make a lasting impact in her new herd.

These heifers are from the top of our pen and sired by some of the most highly sought after bulls in the Simmental industry – Tycoon, Roosevelt, Next Century, Captain Blaze, and Westcott. We have a few heifers off our Red Mountain herd sire BLL/RTL Cypress 01H. We are extremely proud of this group of females and would make great additions to their new owner’s herd.

If I could pick a favourite, Kristen is it. Dark red and broody, but still very attractive female. I think this female will produce alongside the best of them. Her dam is a very good producing cow with daughters working at Schweitzer Simmentals, Massinon Farms, and Jared Nickel. I think this heifer makes a statement as I feel she is among our best.

elcome to our annual Pembina Triangle Simmental association sale. I believe this is my most consistent even group of bred heifers that I have in this sale. On offer is 1 full fleck FB and 5 polled red heifers. 1 homo polled for sure and 3 with polled tests pending.

All the heifers have been vaccinated with Express 5 and Tasvax 8 early April as a calf and again at weaning, and Express 10 at the start of breeding season.

This summer was one of the driest summers we have had in a long time. I think it was sometime in the 1980 that we had so little rain for the summer. We only got about 2 inches of rain this summer. Which affected the hay and grass production. Some 1st cut hay, very little to no 2nd cut in alfalfa. The grass when eaten down did not regrow. On the plus side wheat and canola crops yielded good. Better than we expected. And the prices for our calves and yearlings are really good. $2300-$2550 a calf.
