Welcome to the 2015 edition of our Bull Sale Catalogue. The theme behind this year’s bull crop is ‘Widening the gap between birth and weaning’. The offering this year is truly a combination of seeing the years of selection criteria, genetic selection and the ultra-sounding coming to fruition. As you go through this offering you are going to see that this group has breed leading EPD’s, balanced conformation and a focus on calving ease traits that perform and result in cattle with optimal carcass traits. We are focused on cattle that are Hands Off. It is our belief that the cattle will work under our premise of more grazing days with a shorter calving period. Good bulls here come from females that perform in a controlled and competitive environment and are themselves Hands Off.

It is our intention to catalogue a selection of bulls that will offer you an opportunity to add value to your herd at a reasonable price. It is important to us to offer bulls that will calve easily and provide genetics which give your cows the opportunity to rebreed and wean heavy calves. Your success in maximizing the opportunity of your cow herd to be efficient and profitable … is the pedigree behind our bulls. It has been awesome to see cattle producers be rewarded for a decade of perseverance in the beef business. The Sandy & Keith enjoyment of the beef prices has been great; however, we realize they are not in our control. We remain focused on costs of production … we respect that maintaining and getting a female into the production cycle is a costly venture. We are again offering a group of 1/2 and 3/4 Angus bulls. These bulls have low birth weight, are vigorous at birth, are hardy and are able to grow and feed competitively. EPD consideration has proven to us that it offers more merit than actual phenotypical measurements. EPD’s offer a measurement against an entire Peter population and offers a guide as to where that animal fits into that population. We strive for average number expression in as many traits as possible. All traits contribute to the big picture. Ultra-sound has also proven to be a valuable tool in measuring conformation, maturity, meat yield and gives a reflection to an animal’s efficiency. We have now ultra-sounded our cattle for a number of years, so we will be including carcass EPD’s as another tool to assess these bulls. EPD EXPLANATION ………. CE = Calving Ease - % of unassisted births (the higher the number the better!)

I use EPD’s now like the pedigree. When putting cattle together, I used to give EPD’s little emphasis. I would use the animal’s pedigree because I knew in my head what animals would contribute and would breed cattle with more of an artistry approach. I think the industry has evolved to more of a science. We used to stack good pedigrees, and we were successful doing that. Now I use the pedigree as a path to keep genetics separate enough to stay away from inbreeding. Now, I stack EPD’s.

BW = Birth Weight – pounds of birth weight (the lower the number, the lighter the calves) WW = Weaning Weight – pounds of weaning weight (the higher the number, the more pounds will be weaned) YW = Yearling Weight – pounds of yearling weight (the higher the number the more pounds as a yearling)

The initial EPD on an animal has about 20% accuracy. As we mate these cattle – and through selection for good conformation and good phenotype measure (like weighing and ultra-sounding) we will, in time, improve the accuracy. EPD’s express an animal’s potential within a given population. To get the animal to express that potential, the goal would be to mate it with an animal of equivalent EPD potential, which will improve the consistency of the cattle in the overall herd. Success will be found when you have the highest number of traits with average population EPD number expression.

MCE = Maternal Calving Ease – predicts calving ease of a bull’s daughters (the higher the number the better) MM = Maternal Milk – pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. A management number with reflection of the environment and feed resources. CWT = Carcass Weight – estimates the average differences in carcass weight REA = Square inches of ribeye area (0.57 is average) FAT = inches of back fat measured over the 12th and 13th rib (0.59 is average)

It is important not to deviate from the type of bulls you want the direction of your herd to take. Consistency leads to uniformity of the animals in your herd. This will not happen overnight, however you will see improvement in certain traits depending on that traits heritability.

MARB = numerical marbling score (-0.06 is average)

This does not making buying a bull any easier – it should only give you more confidence in realizing what the animal can contribute. EPD’s help you navigate management and environmental conditions. In the end EPD’s are a tool to identify differences within the population of cattle. EPD’s can be a true asset in cattle selection. 39
