Spa trends come and go, from bathing in beer to salt-rooms that are supposed to mimic the effect of the Black Sea. New spa treatments for 2013 seem to be just as inventive, from ‘mindfulness massages’ to vitamin C-infused showers. Here are a few of the big trends perdicted in spa services for this year. Anti Aging
The first wave of baby boomers are crossing into retirement and are not about to succumb to the ravages of time. Whatever it will take, from exotic skin products to new laser treatments. Health
This relates to the focus on anti-aging regimens to some certain extent, the idea of maintaining good health as we age is a national concern. A number of spa treatments have dramatic health implications. Massage does more than just relieve stress, it has therapeutic aspects as well. Pedicures can play a crucial role in foot health. Deep cleansing facials can prevent skin inflammation and scarring. Organics
Expect to see more earth conscious treatments and organic and wellness products in spas. Brands such as OPI utilize natural and organic materials in their products.
3
D Innovations in technology are making it possible for nail art to move away from bling and into detailed and freehand designs. Hands Free Massage
Massages using items other than hands have been a trend on the rise. Stones, seashells, herb-filled orbs, and even golf ball massages have been gaining in popularity.
2013 SPA
TRENDS
Watch for the emergence of bamboo massage, where heated bamboo stalks roll away knots in tense muscles. Reikki sessions are becoming important for infusions of energy and chakra balance. Ice
Ice
Baby
The power of cold temperatures to reduce inflammation and soothe aches and pains is nothing new. Think of the Finns who follow a sauna with a plunge in icy water. Maui’s Mandara Spa offers an “Ice-Goddess” facial that uses super-cooling procedures that supposedly rejuvenate skin. Many spas are contrasting hot and cold to enhance therapies. The Inn at Palmetto Bluff’s “Steamy Pine Purification” follows a detoxifying warm wrap with a circulation-stimulating cold one. Weird
Science
A facial usually includes a gentle cleansing, a firming massage or perhaps extractions and the application of a serum or moisturizer. Some spas are experimenting with galvanic current treatments. The Mandarin Oriental hotels have introduced cleansing and moisturizing lotions that get a power boost via metal wands, while The Four Seasons in Beverly Hills has added ultrasonic exfoliation as well as galvanic current to some of its facials. The Hotel SaintBart Isle de France in the Caribbean offers “Carboxitherapy”, which rejuvenates skin through applications of intense doses of carbon dioxide. Whether any of these more “out there” treatments will last is anybody’s guess. In any case, there’s no doubt that people will continue to try to fight the clock. boiMAG

I See London By Anita Taylor
It doesn’t matter what you call them, skivvies, undies, drawers, nut hut, jewel case, junk holders, smuggling duds, banana hammocks, tackle bags, snake slingers, tighty whiteys or butt huggers, the underwear industry has been around for more than 100 years. Hanes, Jockey and Fruit of the Loom all date back to the late 1800’s and those companies dominated a market that was divided, until recently, into two markets, boxers and briefs Then, in the ‘70s, super-tight pants called for something a bit closer fitting and the bikini-brief made its debut. However, men’s underwear as a fashion statement really only dates back to 1992 when Calvin Klein and photographer Herb Ritts shot Mark Wahlberg wearing a pair of boxer briefs and put him up on billboards in Times Square. Tom Cruise danced around in his tighty-whiteys in Risky Business. Paul Newman was dubbed the “sexiest man ever” after showing up in only his boxers in “The Long Hot Summer”. Calvin Klein changed the men’s underwear market forever in 1983, when most men’s underwear was white, purchased in packs of three by a “wife, mother or girlfriend, by marketing to gay men, who bought their own underwear with a homoerotic photo of Olympic pole vaulter Tom Hintnaus . “Marky Mark” who made undies fashionable, with pants hanging below the waist, and revealing much of the underwear. Suddenly, the popularity of wearing brightly colored and patterned boxer underwear surged, as

did the interest in boxer briefs. Most men today who mimic that habit don’t even realize that the trend was inspired by prisoners whose pants sagged due to the prohibition of belts in prison. That look also later came to mean that a prisoner was willing to “bottom”. So all these gangster wannabes don’t even realize that the style they’re copying means they are advertising “I take it up the ass”. Those men may not realize what kind of message they’re sending, but the underwear you choose could make a statement about what kind of man you are. Boxers Jon Hamm in Mad Men sporting a pair of classic boxers says that you’re a man’s man and aren’t swayed by the “sensitive” male trends of the day. Boxers are, of course, the loosest of pair of the three options, not allowing much binding or crowding. They can, however, bunch and gather in the wrong places underneath a pair of pants. Wearing a slightly more tailored pair of boxers is a more modern take. Briefs Tom Cruise in “Risky Business”. Tightywhiteys are favored by those who don’t like the way boxers fit under their clothes. They are also liked by those who need extra support to “house their privates”. This day and age, the traditional Jockey
style briefs are are not perceived to be very fashion-forward. They also have a tendency to ride lower than boxers and boxer-briefs, creating a risk of “crack display” when bending over. However there are some sexy new styles out now that’s helping make a comeback for briefs.
Bikini Briefs & Thongs Unless he is a stripper, there is no reason for any man to wear a bikini or thong.
Commando In the right situations (and pant fit choice), going “commando” is still an option that makes many men feel sexy, or it means that they haven’t done their laundry.
Boxer-Briefs David Beckham, a man who’s not afraid to be sexy, yet still shows restraint. The hybrid of men’s underwear is fancied by men who pay a greater attention to fashion than the norm. And, from a practical perspective, boxer-briefs fit well under pants, sit higher than briefs, and crowd less... not to mention, look sexy. Jock Straps The gym or sports activities, period. Okay, or a gym fantasy.
No matter your preference in underwear, remember your mother’s advice and always wear clean, wellmaintained garments. You never know when you’re going to be hit by a bus. Reader’s Choice
Restaurants We’ve compiled another collective column where you, along with our other readers scout out and share their favorite restaurant secrets with us. The recommendations come from our online survey located at boiMAGazineChicago.com. We asked our readers for their input on their dining experiences, delivery places and favorite restaurants. Here’s what they had to say.... Jeff says that “Angelina’s, was a great experience for both myself and my partner Angelo. Great service and excellent food, all in all a great dinning experience!!! A favorite neiborhood restaurant of mine is Nookies in Edgewater on Bryn Mar. Excellent food, service and it’s affordable!! My partner and I go at least two to three times a week. So good!!” “My favorite delivery place is Calo Ristorante in Andersonville, they have great food and are excellent in getting our order right. Never had a bad meal and they have fast delivery... Very consitant and very good food!” RECAP... (Restaurants are in Chicago) Angelina’s, 3561 N Broadway St. (773) 935-5933 Nookies, 1100 W Bryn Mawr Ave. (773) 516-4188 Calo Ristorante, 5343 N Clark St. (773) 271-7782 Terry L. says that “Antica Pizzeria in Andersonville is one of our favorite places, we go once a week. Mario, the owner does an amazing job with the food. Flavorful, cravable and appropriate portions. No big soupy bowls of pasta and thick white flour pizzas here. My partner and I generally get two entrees and share. A pasta dish and protein dish is our favorite combination. Currently, the

Carbonara and the veal are our go tos. All of the salads are tasty with simple, fresh, (and the best) ingredients. The octopus carpaccio is one of our favorite appetizers. All of the pizzas are skinny and delicious. Most have fresh greens and shaved parmesan on the top. Mario and Racie (who also works there) always greets us by name and know what we are ordering. The tiramisu is creamy and our #1 dessert. Their menu changes seasonally, but a few of our favorites have become mainstays. It’s also BYOB which we take advantage of every visit. If you want a warm environment with tasty italian (in appropriate portions) this is the place to go.” Another reader that remains nameless shares that his (or her) favorite restaurant is Pasteur. “Pasteur transports you to romantic Viet Nam, both in setting and food. The combinations of flavors in the dishes is striking. The use of fresh greens as wraps for various appetizers pleasantly stands out. Big date place for gay couples.” Also “my favorite Italian restaurant is Francesca’s on Bryn Mawr” Another nameless reader reader says they like “Mei Shung Restaurant which is Chinese/Taiwanese (not THAI, but Taiwanese) with authentic cusisines, good prices and a friendly staff. The sauteed pot Stickers are out of this world. Lunch specials are truly a great bargain. No liquor license which means BYOB and get this .... no corkage fee! Other reasons I like this place is there’s a good atmosphere, linen napkins at dinner, you can hear your tablemates speak, you are not jammed it like a sardine, also the patrons can be cruisy! RECAP... Antica Pizzeria, 5663 N Clark St. (773) 944-1492 Pasteur, 5525 North Broadway St. (773) 728-4800 Francesca’s, 1039 West Bryn Mawr Ave. (773) 506-9261 Mei Shung Restaurant, 5511 North Broadway St. (773) 728-5778

Q&A
MARY MORTEN
A filmmaker and activist committed to social change though video and film development, Mary Morten is the president of Morten Group, a consulting firm specializing in social change through skills development, public policy and advocacy. Having served as producer/director for several films covering women’s rights, youth development and national policy initiatives, Mary is currently in pre-production for her next documentary about the art of female impersonation, Miss Gay Black America, highlighting the life of Terri Livingston. When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? I came out about 25 years ago in my mid-twenties. I remember having a dream about kissing a woman and I told my then gay, boyfriend-roommate about it, who told me to “go with it” and I guess I did! The first person I told in my family was my sister-in-law and she was very accepting. It made all the difference in how I felt about my life and these recent developments. Please name a few of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. Vernita Gray, she personifies the words community servant; she is generous and positive in the light of challenges and loves to party! Princess boy-a young, 7-year old boy who likes to wear dresses and loves the color pink. With the support of his parents, he is living his life out loud and to hell with everyone else. Terri Livingston, my brother, female impersonator, one of the great performers of his time. Bayard Rustin, as a movement strategist and civil rights activist, he led the March on Washington in an understated and often overlooked manner.
Chicago Spotlight by Gregg Shapiro What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? I would say the one I am most proud of is leading the coalition to distribute “It’s Elementary: Talking about Gay Issues in School,” the largest distribution of the film in this country in the third largest school district. Also serving as the first out lesbian as board chair for both Chicago NOW, Chicago Foundation for Women and being the first person of color as the Mayor’s liaison to the GLBT community. Being out as an African American lesbian who often was in a position as ”first” was both exciting and daunting. People of color often feel as though we must carry the entire community with us. What are your future goals and aspirations? Several years ago, I decided that my activism would really focus on telling stories and helping to document the community. I have finished my first feature documentary, Woke Up Black (wokeupblack.com) and we are currently touring with it. I just returned from a week of screenings in NY. I started the second part of this documentary in December and will introduce a new film project on March 13, which is very much a story the GLBT community will be interested in seeing. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation. Step up and speak out. The world is watching. Do something! boiMAG 25

On The Go
Around Town Downtown is scruffing up its image by converting its lower level to a specialty bar. On the first and third Friday of each month, it will be called “Renaissance” (not to be confused with the Renaissance Hotel nearby) and on the second and fourth Friday, it will be “Locker Room” with an underwear party. Now that sounds interesting!... James Gavin will host the “Boystown” release party for Mark Ortega’s new single at Spin on Saturday, March 9,… Vanderpump rules at Hydrate nightclub on March 16. Scheana Marie and Jax Taylor, you’ve seen them on the reality shows, re going to be dishing about what happened on and off the screen and Scheana Marie perform her single, “What I Like” live. … Don’t know if it’s true, but the folks at SoFo Tap claim that their party “Stag” is Chicago’s hottest party for single men. There’s no way to find out except stopping in on March 16… Thirsty Thursdays at Watra, 4758 S Pulaski is attracting quite the GLBTQA LMNOP crowd for its mix of sounds, including Latino, Reggeaton and Chicago house. Sodom and Begorrah The bars and clubs are gearing up for St. Patty’s Day, which this year falls on a Sunday, so expect many parties to last all weekend. Downtown will celebrate on Saturday (which just happens to be Mr. Taint’s birthday) with green beer and beads. Just remember, you drink the beer and wear the beads, not the other way around…Boom

Boom Room at Dolphin welcomes DJ Pierre for “Leprechauns on Acid”, and the following week, they’ve got Hi-Fi Sean of the Soup dragons… Touché’s monthly beer bust just happens to fall on St. Patty’s Day. How convenient! Camp Out! Those wackadoodles behind Hell in a Handbag Productions, recently announced their 2013 season featuring shows that Handbag audiences are sure to love. They kick off their season with a sudsy potboiler about race, mothers and daughters and looking fabulous, “L’imitation of Life” on April 6 at Mary’s Attic. They’ll follow that up with a revival of (in my opinion) their greatest triumph, the sickening musical adaptation of “The Birds” which will be presented in its original venue, Berger Park. They make great use of the space. They’ll close out the season with “Christmas Dearest” with David Cerda as, who else? Joan Crawford!... Don’t forget “Thank You For Being a Friend” a celebration of all things “Golden Girls” at Parlour on Clark Saturday, March 23. SoBe It Miami Beach & Miami have been chosen to host the World Outgames in 2017, announced Daniel Vaudrin, president of the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association, yesterday. Vaudrin made the announcement during the selection ceremony in Antwerp, Belgium, site of the 2013 World Outgames. This will mark the first time that the World Outgames has been held in the United States.

Ask Ace Advice by Ace Magyar
Usually I’m giving advice on sex and relationships. However, I decided to take a break and head to SoBe (South Beach in Miami) where the Winter Party is taking place this weekend. Then it’s off to visit my home town of Wilton Manors (or as some of the locals call it WilMa). This gives me the perfect opportunity to share with you a little about the scene down there. Wilton Manors is smack dab in the middle of Ft.. Lauderdale. It has its own mayor, fire and police department, yet it’s only about two square miles. Referred to as “The Island city” because it is surrounded by the Middle River and intercoastal, it has one of the highest percentages of gay populations of any city. Not too many years ago, it was a rundown community filled with crime, but a number of gays and lesbians moved in and began rehabbing the mid-century modern homes and it now has one of the higher per capita incomes in Florida. As we all know, where gays and lesbians go, bars, clubs, restaurants and fabulous shopping follow. Here’s the lowdown on it all. In fact, a formerly abandoned strip mall is now filled with thriving stores, restaurants, a gym and Alibi, a popular nightclub and restaurant. All locations are in Wilton Manors, unless noted otherwise. Since it’s easier for a restaurant to get a liquor license than a bar or nightclub, many of the areas bars also serve food. Often it’s not much more than pizza and burgers, but some go all out with their menu. Bill’s, 2209 N. Wilton Dr., is the little neighborhood bar that’s not so little (think North End on steroids). Atomic/Boom, 2232 N. Wilton Dr., is located in the Alibi mall, it’s a popular dance/video bar. Rumors, 2426 N. Wilton Dr., is the new kid on the block friendly atmosphere that also serves food and drinks. The Corner Pub, 1915 N. Andrews, is a friendly neighborhood bar, think Little Jim’s. While the Cubby Hole, 823 N. Federal, Ft.. Lauderdale, is a bear bar. Scandals, 3073 NE 6th Ave., is a country western bar with line dancing, a poker table and a huge patio.
Wilton Manors Georgie’s Alibi, 2266 N. Wilton Dr., is the megabar that started it all. Think Roscoe’s with a cabaret room attached. Infinity Lounge, 2184 N Wilton Dr., recently opened it’s a martini bar similar in size and atmosphere to Marty’s in Andersonville. For strippers, there are places galore. In Ft.. Lauderdale Johnny’s, 1116 W. Broward, Ft.. Lauderdale , features very young strippers, think Lucky Horseshoe with better looking guys). Boardwalk, 1721 N. Andrews, (sometimes nicknamed the “boredwalk” because the dancers looked bored) features male strippers, with the occasional porn star guest appearance. Its patio restaurant, Beefcakes, is better than you might expect. Torpedo, 2829 West Broward, Ft.. Lauderdale is a dive with hustler types. In Miami, the guys at Swinging Richards take it all off. The Manor, 2345 N. Wilton Dr., is a mega complex of nightclub, dance bar, restaurant. There’s always entertainment of some sort going on. It’s a lot like Spin, but more upscale., Mona’s, 502 E Sunrise, Ft.. Lauderdale, is a neighborhood dive. New Moon, 2440 N. Wilton Dr. is the women’s bar, a lot like The Closet, but the ladies are more tanned. Rosie’s, 2449 N. Wilton Dr., is famous for its cocktails, food and a great patio. It used to be a Hamburger Mary’s and has a similar feel. For guys into leather, THE place to go is Ramrod, 1508 NE 4th Ave., Ft.. Lauderdale. If you’re a sport bar type, head over to Sidelines, 2031 N. Wilton Dr. Like Crew but a lot bigger. Naked Grape Wine Bar, 2039 N. Wilton Dr., is a classy, upscale place with delicious tapas. Lips, 1421 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park- the drag show restaurant and bar. The gospel brunch is a must-see. The Village Pub, 2283 Wilton Dr. is a gay Cheers/video bar similar to Sidetrack. For an idea of what it’s like on Manor Drive, check out this video on YouTube. It’s a bit out of date, but captures the essence of what makes Wilton Manors so special. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSrp0QqPI2Y
