Anthony Preston/A2 Productions Taps Dance Legend Ultra Naté, Angelica Ross and the Who’s-Who of LGBTQ+ Influencers for “FIERCE” Song, Motion Music Video and their updated Trans Awareness Campaign.

One of Chicago's favorite live performing artist at music festivals, Ultra Naté is with Angelica Ross (American Horror Story, Pose, Chicago on Broadway), and Mila Jam (Rent) to deliver her vocal performance on the A2 Productions (Anthony Preston/Andre Lindal) (Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, etc.) written and produced dance/pop track “Fierce,” was recently released by A2 Productions/Symphonic Distribution, but that’s only part of the story. The music video features a roll call of the biggest LGTBQ+ influencers, community leaders and allies (inc. Brandy, Kalen Allen, Sarah Kate Ellis, Muni Long, Gabrielle Union and Tina KnowlesLawson) in a masterpiece visual directed by Frank Gatson (Beyoncé, Rhianna, En Vogue).

The Fierce Project is much more than the song, it educates and informs by merging pop culture and social justice in an easily digestible manner. Music and entertainment, especially in the digital era, providing a powerful platform to connect

with and inspire the world. Anthony Preston, the project creator and lead, states “The Fierce Project aims to celebrate the trans community through song while educating and calling for an end to the pandemic levels of violence committed against them.” It’s in the song lyrics... “Music is a judgment-free zone,” where “Love will conquer all.” To that end:

The Fierce Project has been allinclusive and invites everyone without regard to gender, sexual orientation, race and/or religion to be free, and to be Fierce!

"Fierce” recently premiered on February 10th, 2023 in partnership with GRINDR. PRIDE RADIO on the iHeart Radio app also premiered the song at Midnight, then played it again at the top of every hour for 24 hours afterwards, and continuing airplay throughout the campaign. “The Fierce Challenge” on social media fueled by a comprehensive influencer campaign, will launch alongside the release, challenging users on Tik Tok Instagram and Facebook to participate and have the opportunity to win some major prizes.

The remix of the song was released on March 31 for Trans Day of Visibility.

The project boast support from The Pop Culture Collaborative (Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors) and Lyft, and a significant portion of the proceeds raised will be gifted to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, The Marsha P. Johnson Institute, and GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program.

Coming Of Age In The Age Of House INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT FREE

Q: Hello Scott, Campsongs Productions has a “House Musical” theater production getting ready to hit the stage at the Center on Halsted, can you tell us where the idea came from and where the desire to put on a house musical came from?

A: Many years ago, I came up with the idea to have a musical about House Music, one because I lived through the era, but two, I’m one of those people who takes every idea and thinks, “could that be a musical?”. I knew I had a good idea, and then, when I came up with the title, House Musical, I knew I had something big! The problem was, I had no plot - oops! So I was hanging out with my friend Marcus Waller, who I knew from the House days. We actually met at the Generator, one of the black gay clubs of the House era. He told me that how going to the Warehouse helped him to come out of the closet, because he had never met any gay people before going to that club. He said the Warehouse gave him the freedom to be himself. When he told me that, I thought, “bingo! we’ve got it!”. The amazing thing to me is how, when we talk to folks of that age who grew up on the south side, they all say the same thing, “the Warehouse is how I came out of the closet”.

The Warehouse deserves a place in the black LGBT history of Chicago, along with its place in Chicago music history. I know that right now, Preservation Chicago is fighting to save the building, which is in danger of being demolished by developers.

Q: Since there are a couple origins of house music, one beginning with the DJs playing classic disco records, like at the Warehouse club in Chicago, and other with DJs developing the Chicago house sound with drum machines, bass lines, samples and vocals, so where does the setting of the “House Musical” take place?

A: Yes, House Music as we know it took awhile to develop, as does any popular music genre in American history. We definitely compressed that time for the sake of the musical, so as we say about movies, “It’s not a documentary!”. So those who know the full history will see a time warp, when Dwayne, the main character, enters the Warehouse, it’s around 1978, when he leaves that morning, it’s 1986!

We wanted to include all of the important black LGBT clubs of the era, including the Warehouse, Stop & Drink, Generator, Rialto Tap, and Club LaRay, they're all in there!

Q: Tell us something about the book that the musical was inspired from.

A: Once I had the plot for the musical, I had to beg Marcus to write the book! However, Marcus made a good point. He told me that the name I had was not sufficient, because this really was a personal story, and not the history of House. So I came up with the full title, being ‘House Musical, Coming of Age in the Age of House’, which is a much better description of the show you will see.

The book is actually the combining of two stories. The main story is from Marcus, and it is autobiographical. A lot of the struggles that Marcus has gone through in his life are in this play. The part I bring to the musical is the story of my friend Riley Evans, who got me involved in making House music records. He introduced me to Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard, and Brett Wilcots, of Gherkin Records. We present Riley’s story in the musical, and as a tribute, we keep the name Riley for the character.

Q: What do you think that the house music movement and message was about, and why is that still of interest to us today?

A: I have done a whole lot of thinking about House Music and its power. I knew that the most essential part of House Music was its tempo, 120 beats per minute. When I realized that that's the beating speed of a healthy heart, it all came together for me. House Music is a deep, human, emotional, spiritual thing, a joyful celebration of life itself!

Q: What's the audience “takeaway” that you'd like to inspire after seeing the House Musical?

A: Wow, there are so many things we are trying to bring to the audience with House Musical. From the musician’s side, I describe the House Music era as being like Beatlemania, there was this constant buzz of excitement in the air. Chicago musicians, DJs and producers were making records that got played on the two major R&B radio stations in Chicago, WBMX and WGCI, and those records were becoming hits in Europe. The excitement came from the music itself, but also from the knowledge that we were smack dab in the middle of history. We knew what was being created would someday be recognized as it is being recognized today.

We are also trying to take folks back to the late 70’s/early 80’s, which was such a different time for LGBT folks than it is today. There were no out Hollywood celebrities, no gay-themed TV shows. No one was out at their job, most people were not out to their families. On top of that, there was the huge dark cloud of AIDS that was hovering over all of us, knowing that AIDS was a death sentence, and yet fighting and staying positive, and celebrating our proud LGBT-selves through it all!

For three decades it’s been a rite of passage for underground dancers to have their ears scalded by Sweet Pussy Pauline. Sampled on innumerable records, her swaggering, hypersexual monologues move from withering insults to cartoonish ecstasy, employing a full range of surreal dick metaphors, from anteaters to table legs and toothpicks. A generation of gay men can quote her verbatim, unconsciously or no, from “Wake up, smell the coffee, and realize you are not the tea” to “It’s what’s up front that counts!” all capped off with a motorboating “blblblbl!”

Desirable Revenge (The Saga of Sweet Pussy Pauline),” “Sweet Pussy Pauline A Cappella,” “Hateful Head Helen” and the original Sweet Pussy Pauline remix, “Work This Pussy,” by Junior Vasquez, are the epitome of bitch tracks, scolding reads set to dance beats which served to soundtrack vogue balls and drag numbers as well as set more mainstream dance floors aflame.

Helen. The form draws from classic soul chastenings like Shirley Brown’s “Woman to Woman,” raunchy R&B and early hip-hop diss tracks. Its contemporary form can be traced to an improvised monologue delivered by Loleatta Holloway at the Better Days club in 1985, secretly recorded by DJ Bruce Forest, and transformed into a massive club a cappella hit by Vasquez called “My Loleatta.”

Sweet Pussy Pauline knew her history, too: The phrase “It’s what’s up front that counts” is a direct lift from Holloway’s 1976 track “Dreamin’,” just one of the live samples she wove throughout her scandalous output.

There are other classic bitch tracks like Frankie Fuentes’ “Tyler More Mary,” George Morel’s “This is My Party (Bitch Get Out),” and “You Used to Hold Me” by Ralphi

and Xavier Gold. But Sweet Pussy Pauline was something else. Nobody had heard language like that in a house club, which was not only hilariously explicit, but centered black women’s sexuality in a way that was missing in the (mostly) man’s world of early house music.

But just who was Sweet Pussy Pauline? “People make up whole histories of who she is. She’s from the streets, she’s from a penthouse, I don’t know what they think!” Vocal house pioneer Candy J, Sweet Pussy Pauline’s creator, was speaking over the phone in that unmistakable voice, breaking down the legend. “Right now, she’s the talk of the town again, since Kanye stole the ‘Work This Pussy’ sample for Teyana Taylor’s album. There’s a whole new level of notoriety, and people that are reaching out.”

Candy J was taking a break from her current project, rehabbing beauty shops and houses as an interior designer. It’s the latest transformation in a life full of hairpin turns and stretches of international success. Originally from Detroit, she moved to Chicago in the early ’80s to model for the Ebony Fashion Fair. After that she became a car broker. Her entrance into the world of house music was almost on a whim. “I was sitting at my desk listening to the radio, and I told my boss, ‘Oh my God, I can sing better than that!’ And he said, ‘Well, why don’t you?’ So that’s what I set out to do.”

In 1986, Candy recorded early vocal house classic “Why Are You Wasting My Time?” on the Fierce record label, a subsidiary of DJ International. “It came out overseas and was a mediocre hit at the time. But it became a calling card to the business,” she said. That record was followed by “Desire” and a jump to the Hot Mix 5 label. Writing credits on “Don’t Want It” by Kenny “Jammin” Jason, Fast Eddie, and Paris Grey and Full House’s “I Remember,” as well as a breakthrough pop-oriented record, “Somethings They Never Change,” came soon afterwards.

By this time, Candy J had built up a live following, her vocal style a Sylvesterlike soprano augmented with sassy growls that struck a chord on house radio stations and, especially, gay clubs. Vocal house music had reinvigorated a gay club touring circuit that had been decimated by the early years of AIDS, and even though the gay community was still in the throes of the epidemic, crowds turned out for a good diva who knew how to work the crowd.

It was right around this time that Sweet Pussy Pauline was born, neither from penthouse nor pavement, but censor-

baiting experimental art. “The truth is, I was listening to that song ‘Tales of Taboo’ by the artist Karen Finley, which was a hit. And I told my good friend [Philadelphia house DJ] Phil Dickerson, ‘I don’t think she’s doing it right. I should go up there and tell the truth! So I turned my keyboard on and I just started talking. That was it.”

The result was “Desirable Revenge (The Saga of Sweet Pussy Pauline).” “Somehow we recorded it, and I sent a copy to Junior Vasquez,” Candy J said. “I was in New York for the Billboard Music Conference they had every year, and it was playing. And I said, ‘Oh my God, that sounds like me, OH MY GOD! At that time I was doing more Top 40 type music. But my friend told me, ‘What you need to do is put on a blonde wig and some dark sunglasses, and go make that money!’ Junior Vasquez paid me $6,000 to perform that song at his club and nowhere else for three months, and not to give a copy to Tony Humphries. That was his primary request. I didn’t know about the politics behind the music back then.”

Sweet Pussy Pauline was an instant hit, but Candy J was still pursuing a mainstream singing career. “I would go up on stage and sing my songs and people would be like, ‘OK, OK that was cute, now bring out the dirty talk.’ I started to feel like, ‘Do they want the music act or the comedy?’ I never considered myself a comedian, but Sweet Pussy Pauline took on a life of her own.”

Success led her away from Chicago to New York, where she says audiences embraced her more. “People probably don’t know I was the first person MC Lyte ever opened up for. I performed at Paradise Garage. I went in there and all I saw was just a big black club, and I thought, ‘I’m not that popular, why am I performing here?’ They paid me $3,000,

and I said, ‘Cash?’ It was a scene. It was the first time I saw a performer get booed on stage. I turned to my manager and he said, ‘Do your show, Candy, just do your show.’ So I went out there and just started talking, and everyone started laughing."

“I didn’t know what I was doing. I called one of the dancers up, one of the best dancers in the club. I’m tall, and he was short, and he started going all between my legs and around my body. I said, ‘Girls, when you got a man like this, you need to take him to the wall. Put his hands up against the wall, and just work the motherfucker.’ All they saw from the stage was ass and hair, and the club went absolutely berserk."

“I performed there I think four times. When I went on tour, I was playing major clubs like the Trocadero in San Francisco. The places would be absolutely packed because people would want to know, ‘Who talks like that?’ It was crazy. I cut another record called ‘The Walk.’ People were sampling me, I was on so many records. I’ve been to Africa, Australia and China talking about dick, honey.”

“I had Grace Jones’ manager, Bob Caviano," who also managed the Village People and KC and the Sunshine Band and started Lifebeat, the music industry’s organization to fight AIDS, before succumbing to the disease himself in 1992.“ He said, ‘Candy, you don’t want to be an artist, you want to be an act.’ I didn’t really know what that meant. But he said, ‘You want to be the type of person that don’t need a record out to perform.’ He said, ‘I can book Grace anywhere, and she’ll pull a crowd.’ And that’s what I strived to do. He called me a few years later and said, ‘Congratulations girl, you made it.’ And I felt so good.”

While Sweet Pussy Pauline’s raunchiness took center stage, Candy J’s music had turned to darker subjects like obsession and abuse, with records like “Hurt Me! Hurt Me!” and “Shoulda Have Known Better.” “I donated tens of thousands of dollars to domestic violence programs,” she said. “It was my cause.”

Then, another turn: Sweet Pussy Pauline became a UK pop star as part of the Candy Girls, scoring Top 20 hits with sugar-rushes “Fee Fi Fo Fum” in 1995 and “Wham Bam” in 1996. Pauline had lost none of her edge (“Fee Fi Fo Fum, look out throat, here it comes” was a chorus), but now she was at the forefront of the handbag house movement, a sped-up, pop-accessible genre that helped bring broader gay club sounds to the charts in the late 1990s. “At first it was just a payment for a sample,” Candy J said. “They had no idea how big it was going to get. Then I got in more on the next record.” With videos, a publishing contract, appearances and another European hit called ‘Climb Up On Top of Me,’ "it paid a lot of bills. It was a lot of fun, too.”

JOFFERY BALLET PRESENTS THE LITTLE MERMAID

The Joffrey Ballet closes its 67th season with the long awaited Chicago premiere of John Neumeier’s beautifully haunting interpretation of The Little Mermaid. A gripping tableau of shadows and colors, Neumeier’s world renowned production of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 tragic folktale follows the tormented mermaid heroine on a journey between the divergent worlds of land and sea, one utterly complex, the other magnificently serene. With sets and costumes of the grandest scale, this heartbreaking tragedy, based on Andersen’s original and complex themes, will mark the largest production ever mounted by The Joffrey Ballet.

In The Little Mermaid, Milwaukee-born, Hamburg Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer John Neumeier blends dance, dramatic storytelling, and spectacle into a stunning interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fable. The story follows a mermaid who saves a ship’s captain, a Prince, from drowning after a terrible storm at sea. Awakening to a group of onlookers on shore, the Prince mistakes his savior for a human Princess for whom he falls instantly in love. Begging for help from the underwater Sea Witch, the mermaid receives a human body with two legs, but as she watches the Prince’s love for the Princess grow, she suffers the pain of human disappointment and the heartbreak of unrequited love.

Neumeier created The Little Mermaid for the Royal Danish Ballet in 2005 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Andersen’s birth. The Little Mermaid is Neumeier’s tour de force, featuring his original choreography, sets, and costumes that come together to create a ballet that is as much theater as it is dance.

“John Neumeier’s adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid is a poignant

depiction of the complexity of unrequited love and unwavering resilience,” says The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE. “At its heart, the story proves the strength of the spirit, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. The production’s choreography and stage design beautifully illustrate the contrasts between land and sea, and hope and despair. Neumeier’s emotional journey reminds us that no matter how fervent, and although sometimes unreturned, love is a powerful force which transforms us into our best selves.”

President and CEO Greg Cameron adds, “Marking the largest production ever mounted by the Joffrey, the long-anticipated Chicago premiere of The Little Mermaid closes out an extraordinary season of milestones, including the record-breaking remount of Anna Karenina, which became the highest-grossing non-Nutcracker production in the Joffrey’s history. The Little Mermaid features an original score by Lera Auerbach that combines moody harmonies with the use of the theremin to convey the beautiful, otherworldly voice of the mermaid. Live music will be performed by the Lyric Opera Orchestra, conducted by Scott Speck, Music Director of The Joffrey Ballet.

Shut Down and Shut Out: When Friendship Goes Wrong

Closure happens right after you accept that letting go and moving on is more important than projecting a fantasy of how the relationship could have been.

Friends are relationships that matter. We depend on them for emotional support, we rely on them to provide us social interaction, and we expect a level of loyalty and a shoulder to lean on. Have you ever read one of those signs that say: “Friends are the family we choose for ourselves”? They know the best of us. They know the worst of us. They know our secrets and they don’t judge us. That is what makes friends so important.

What happens when a friend suddenly tells you that you are no longer needed, you were never really friends, or an argument divides you in ways you never expected? Chances are you assumed that the friendship was long term, maybe forever, and the ending of the relationship is painful, socially and emotionally.

You feel like you are out of balance, shocked, and beyond hurt. You may have no idea how or why things got so out of control but what you can control is how you let this break-up impact you.

One of the first things you have to examine is your feelings. What emotions are dredged up from the loss of this relationship? Hurt is first. Soon a real sadness takes over. Then we get mad! Once these very base emotions have had their time, more complex emotions take over. Self- doubt, guilt, betrayal and disbelief are like a waterfall, there is no stopping it. You keep playing the break-up over and over in your mind and you wonder if you even knew this friend at all or did you miss a clue, could you have prevented this?

You can spend all of your time going over what has happened and asking yourself how can you fill this kind of void or you can work to make repairs and keep yourself mentally and emotionally healthy during a tough time. You will have to find a way to not take a very personal act, not so personally. It can be done. It isn’t easy, but you can get through this.

Here are some tips for finding a way to move forward:

• Go ahead and feel your feelings.

• Recognize that this might be more about them than it is about you.

• Be kind to yourself. Keep the selftalk positive.

• Take the higher road. Don’t seek revenge, spread rumors, or act out your feelings in unhelpful ways.

• Tell someone who does not know your friend and who can just be an objective listener.

• Journal about it at length and then go back and read it at a later date. You just may learn something about yourself.

• Keep active. See other friends. Do things that make you happy.

• Be forgiving. Let go.

Mental health is important. Mental health is the conduit between being physically well and emotionally in step. There are lots of ways to keep yourself physically fit: exercise, good food choices, and preventive doctor visits are all great. There are also lots of ways you can keep yourself emotionally balanced. For both physical and emotional health, it is not making big changes that are burdensome; causing you to give up on them, but small steps that are manageable and sustainable. Here are some baby steps to achieving improved mental and emotional health.

WATCH FOR PHYSICAL CLUES TO EMOTIONAL DISTRESS

Your body is an amazing machine. Watching for physical symptoms that may have emotions at the helm may alert you to stress, anxiety or burnout. These can include not sleeping, feeling fatigued, disinterest in food or aches and pains.

You may not be able to fully ignore these as physical concerns, mind you, but know that your physical self often reacts to emotional conditions as well.

Learn about Mental illnesses. Mental illness affects 20% of the population of the United States. All genders, cultures and ethnic groups are impacted by mental health conditions. Taking the time to take a course like Mental Health First Aid (look it up!), can help you understand what common diagnoses like anxiety and depression look like and may feel like. If you have mental illness in your family, know that some mental illnesses are genetic. Talk out problems with friends, family or professionals; don’t let upsets fester.

Find what you love to do and find time to do it. Book time for you. Self-care is important. Take an honest inventory of enjoyment. Have you worked so much that you have forgotten what fun is? Seriously look for it! Try new things. Meet new people. Go new places.
