Wet and Wild! MEN’S SWIMWEAR TRENDS 2014 By Anita Taylor

I came back from the men’s swimwear fashion shows in Miami all hot and moist, and it wasn’t because of the climate. This year designers took inspiration from a variety of sources; teen beach movies, African prints, retro frat boys and even awning materials! All in all, this year’s fashions are following the previous trends of square cut legs; with board shorts and shorter and tighter cuts, similar to volleyball shorts, showing up in vivid colors, graphics, stripes. Eco-friendly fabrics and performance microfibers ruled the runways.

Martha Ivelisse Pesante Rodríguez is what you’d find her listed as on her birth certificate, but music lovers around the globe know her as Ivy Queen. This multi Latin Grammy nominee is responsible for such chart-topping songs as “Quiero Bailar, Te He Querido”, “Te He Llorado” and “La Vida Es Asi” and those are just to name a few. Ivy will soon grace the stage as she travels across the United States for her first ever gay tour. The Queen of Reggaeton tells us about the upcoming tour and what the gay community really means to her.

What can we expect when you kick off your gay club tour? This is something that I’ve been wanting to do for so long. I want to do something for the gay community. They always support me. All of my best friends are gay. This is a tribute for the love that they have shown me. I am going to make sure that the guys have fun and that they sing along with me. I am trying to incorporate different drag queens from the U.S. I am a huge fan of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and basically I want to have a drag queen at every city that I will be visiting. You’ve performed at Gay Pride in Los Angeles and Long beach. What is it about the gay community that strikes a chord with you? They feel free…that freedom that allows you to say what you feel, even though if it hurts somebody, you’re telling the truth. Another thing is that they are so brilliant. They are so talented. I know a lot of makeup artists, painters, stylists that are so creative. I have friends that do clothing. They are happy and are celebrating life. That is what I love about them. That is what I love about them, the freedom of being who you are. That is why I love them so much. What would you like to say to your gay fans?

iMUSIC

Decade dance

iby Gregg Shapiro Now in his fifth decade as a recording artist, soulful musical mystic Van Morrison’s hugely successful 1970 solo album Moondance has been reissued in an expanded, deluxe, four CD/one Blu-ray audio disc edition. Disc one includes a remastered version of the original 10-song album in all of its glory. From the jazzy title cut to the romantic classic “Crazy Love,” and spiritually oriented numbers including “Brand New Day,” “Into The Mystic” and “And It Stoned Me,” Moondance deserves all the accolades it has ever received. The fifth Blu-ray disc features the original album in high resolution 5.1 & stereo mixes. Bob Dylan’s Another Self Portrait revisits songs 1970 Self Portrait and celebrated 1970 New Morning albums in this tenth volume in The Bootleg Series. Demo, unreleased, alternate, live and nonoverdubbed versions of these songs, performed in an array of Dylan’s vocal styles, offer new and enlightening insights into the tunes as well as the tunesmith himself. Along with sisters Betty and Helen, Dot Wiggin was one-third of naïve rock band The Shaggs. A favorite of hipsters around the globe, The Shaggs’ 1969 debut album earned the trio a following for its simplistic lyrics, amateur musicianship and off-key singing. In other words, camp is cool! Stepping out solo for the first time ever on Ready! Get! Go! Dot Wiggin fronts the Dot Wiggin Band. If you dug/dig The Shaggs, this album will be right up your alley. The original line-up of influential noisepop band Medicine has reunited for To The Happy Few, its first studio album since 1995. As sweet and tart as the citrus fruits pictured on the cover,

the disc opens with the blistering “Long As The Sun,” which delivers 40 seconds of bombast before sliding into a hip-shaking pop number, complete with harmonies. From there, the songs alternate between a fierce roar, feisty funk (“Burn It,” “Holy Crimes,” “Find Me Always”) and razor-sharp pop (“Daylight” and “Butterfly’s Out Tonight”). One of the biggest stars of the shortlived hip-hop/jazz hybrid, Us3’s “Cantaloop,” with its Herbie Hancock sample, was an inescapable hit single in 1993 (and for quite a few years after). The expanded reissue of Hand on the Torch features the original album, including “Cantaloop,” on the first disc and a second disc of remixes as well as instrumental versions of songs from the album. As with the aforementioned Van Morrison and Bob Dylan, Boz Scaggs has been plying his trade since the 1960s. But it wasn’t until the mid-1970s that Scaggs achieved commercial success. His 1973 album Slow Dancer yielded a couple of minor hits (the title track and “You Make It So Hard”). However, it was his 1976 album Silk Degrees that made Boz Scaggs a household name. The Grammy winning album produced a generous number of hit singles, all of which are included on the two-CD set The Essential Boz Scaggs. The collection also reaches into Scaggs’ past and includes more recent recordings as well. As tragic as an opera, Mario Lanza was a handsome opera star-turned-movie star whose meteoric rise was cut short, and he died at age 38. The Toast of Hollywood captures 30 tracks on two discs – “A Tenor In Hollywood” and “A Tenor at the Movies,” including six previously unreleased recordings. boiMAG 25

Troubled Teen I am 17 and my family and I spent a week at a ski resort during the Christmas holidays. While there I met a really nice girl, Leslie, and we spent the entire week together,. After we both returned home we kept in touch with e-mails and phone calls. My parents are planning a Caribbean vacation and, I guess as what they thought was a nice surprise, invited Leslie. What my parents don’t know is that Leslie and I made out a couple of times. I have never had a girlfriend (or a boyfriend, either) and don’t know if I am a lesbian. We were able to keep things on the down-low but during this vacation we’ll be staying in a more confined area. I really like Leslie, but don’t want my parents to find out about us. Dear TT, If you’re not certain about your sexuality, you aren’t alone. Many young people have crushes on members of both genders, even if they don’t act on them. I would advise not saying anything to your parents unless you think they would understand your situation. As for the trip, talk with your new friend and set up some ground rules that you both feel comfortable with. If you can come to an understanding, there’s no reason that you shouldn’t enjoy each other’s company. I’d like to share a something from a recent column by my colleague “Dear Abby”: Dear Abby, My husband and I relocated to Florida a little over a year ago and

were quickly welcomed into our new neighbors’ social whirl. Two couples in the neighborhood are gay -- one male, one female. While they are nice enough, my husband and I did not include them when it was our turn to host because we do not approve of their lifestyle choices. Since then, we have been excluded from neighborhood gatherings, and someone even suggested that we are bigots! Abby, we moved here from a conservative community where people were pretty much the same. If people were “different,” they apparently kept it to themselves. While I understand the phrase “when in Rome,” I don’t feel we should have to compromise our values just to win the approval of our neighbors. But really, who is the true bigot here? Would you like to weigh in? Unhappy In Tampa Dear Unhappy, I sure would. The first thing I’d like to say is that regardless of what you were told in your previous community, a person’s sexual orientation isn’t a “lifestyle choice.” Gay people don’t choose to be gay; they are born that way. They can’t change being gay any more than you can change being heterosexual. I find it interesting that you are unwilling to reciprocate the hospitality of people who welcomed you and opened their homes to you, and yet you complain because you are receiving similar treatment. From where I sit, you may have chosen the wrong place to live because it appears you would be happier in a less integrated neighborhood surrounded by people who think the way you do. But if you interact only with people like yourselves, you will have missed a chance for growth, which is what you have been offered here. Please don’t blow it.
