SPRING FORTH, EVENTS, MUSIC, THEATER, FILM PIONEERS WHO PAVED THE WAY

Could it be true? That the worst of winter is behind us? Every year at the first incidence of temperature above 50º, I haul out the storage bin from the back of the closet and begin to switch over my wardrobe. Usually no sooner do I have my shorts neatly stacked on a shelf and my polo shirts hanging on the rod than the temperature plummets and I have to rummage around to find my winter coat. The old saying, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” doesn’t apply in the Windy City. In Chicago it is likely to come in like a lion, but is just as likely to go out like a polar bear… or a tropical bird. Whatever! We’re optimistically calling it spring. In the hopes it remains that way, we take a look at upcoming arts and entertainment events. We also take this time to look at some of trailblazers of our community, those folks who opened up gay bars back in the bad old days when raids and arrests were commonplace occurrences and the gay community was forced to live in the shadows. Yes Virginia, there really was a community before Halsted. Of course, we have all the dish that’s fit to print (and some that isn’t) from Harry Taint, news on DVDs from Gregg Shapiro and advice from our in-house therapist and heartthrob Ace Magyar. It’s not easy riding herd on this crowd, but this ain’t my first time at the rodeo boys!

The bears are coming out of hibernation and roaming around Halsted that must mean spring is here! And along with the bears we’ll see increased activity throughout the city as people break their cabin fever by hitting entertainment venues around town. If you’re going as stir crazy after the long cold winter as we are, you’ll want to check out some of these events. BTW: if you are reading this online, the links are interactive.

Community Events

Spring, bears, what am I missing? Oh, yeah, International Mr. Leather (IML). IML is always held in Chicago Memorial Day Weekend. It looks the Hyatt on Wacker Drive will be covering the window walls of the lobby with plain brown paper again… Kathy Griffin will be the Friday night headliner at Milwaukee’s Pridefest this year… Chicago’s first annual Red Dress Party, part of a national event to create awareness and visibility for raising funds dedicated to the research and care of HIV/AIDS patients, is set for April 16. If you’d like to get your hands on that, check out the web site, www.chicagoseries2011.com.

Music

Foo Fighters will be playing songs from “Wasting Light” (the new album the band recorded in Dave Grohl’s garage) in the garages of lucky fans in eight North American cities. The Chicago show is slated for April 19. Fans who want a shot at making their garage one of these eight intimate venues can go to go to www.foofightersgaragetour.com/contest and enter the contest by explaining, in 25

words or less, why they (and 50 of their friends) deserve to win and then sending in a picture of their garage. Homolatte, the regular music/spoken word performance event held at Big Chicks on alternate Tuesdays has released the scheduled performers for this spring. Finally, homeboy Jeff Tweedy does two shows at the Vic, Apr. 15 and 16.

Theater

Home grown diva, Alexandra Billings, brings her hysterically funny “Katie’s Corner” to Chicago after getting raves in LA. In the show Billings plays a Katherine Hepburn-like character (in case any lawyers are reading) hosting a talk show. There’s at least one show at Stage 773 (formerly the Theater Building) and if we’re lucky it may run for years, or at least until next winter when Alex escapes to warmer climes. boi

About Face Theatre teams up with The Hypocrites to present The Woyzeck Project, a festival headlined by productions of “Woyzeck” by Georg Büchner, adapted and directed by Sean Graney and the world premiere of “Pony” by Sylvan Oswald, directed by Bonnie Metzgar. The shows will run in repertory April 10 through May 22 at the Chopin Theatre, 1543 W. Division. Tickets are currently available at www.aboutfacetheatre.com or by calling 866.811.4111. A Reasonable Facsimile Theatre Company’s production of “The Well of Horniness” by Holly Hughes will play Friday & Saturday nights at The Cornservatory Theater, 4210 N Lincoln throughout April. As with most productions by this theater company, it promises to be off-color and funny. Tickets are $15. $12 for students and seniors. Bailiwick Chicago emerged from the ashes of the former company like a phoenix. For the company’s second season four challenging works that explore self-image and identity will be featured. Kicking off the season is the Chicago premiere of the play that electrified Broadway in 2008, winning a Tony Award for “Best Book of a Musical” and numerous other awards. “Passing Strange” runs April 21 through May 29. That is followed in September by “Violet” with music by Jeanine Tesori.

Film

There’ll be no shortage of sequels from the big studios this spring. “Scream 4”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The AARP Years”, “The Hangover 2”, “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “Cars 2”. If you don’t want sequels, how about a prequel? They’re coming out with “X-Men: First Class Beginners” I guess that’s what you do when the stars of the original movie get a little long in the (sabre) tooth. Fear not comic book geeks, you’ll also have “Thor” and “Green Lantern” starring yummy Ryan Reynolds in emerald tights. For something a little more intellectual, the Queer Film Society has been screening outstanding LGBT movies made in Chicago at the Chicago Cultural Center. By the time you read this, there’ll be only one more film to see. On April 6, “Were the World Mine”, a delightful GLBT fantasy screens.

It’s sometimes hard to believe that the gay rights movement in this country is more than 40 years old. That means that a great majority of our community was born after the Stonewall riots that marked the beginning of the modern gay rights movement.

Flint is also the the principal of River North Travel and, of course, founder and owner of the Miss Gay Continental Pageant, a showcase for female impersonators on the national level. We managed to catch him in a rare break in his busy day and asked him about his experiences in the bar business.

Those that grew up in the past 30 years often take for granted the freedoms we now have. They may read or hear stories about the “bad old days” when raids of gay bars were a regular occurrence. It’s difficult for many to comprehend that people would lose their jobs, families and freedom just for going to a gay bar.

When did you open your first gay bar? March 19, 1969

The folks who provided places where members of our community could socialize and be themselves in the second half of the 20th century often faced great difficulties. A few of these pioneers are still in business or have just entered retirement. We decided to ask these pioneers about how things were, “back in the day.” JIM FLINT left Peoria after high school and spent a number of years in the military before landing Chicago in midsixties where he started bartending while attending classes at Northwestern University. After a few semesters he realized that he didn’t want to follow an academic path. He opened the Baton Show Lounge in 1969. Felicia, as he was affectionately known, decided to present the best in the art of femaleimpersonation. His cast of performers over the years has been recognized nationwide as the best in the business. While he no longer performs, he is still very much the host at the club, which just celebrated 41 years in business earlier this month. Recognized for his numerous political activist, business and philanthropic activities he was inducted in Chicago’s Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame in 1991. In addition to The Baton, he also owns and operates Club 3150. Some of his previous bars and clubs include; Annex 2, Annex 3, Redoubt and Redoubt Atlanta,

Where was it located? Clark and Hubbard, at first it was one storefront, then we expanded to 430-436 N Clark. What are some of the regular features or events? Female impersonators in Las Vegas style shows. What were some of the difficulties you faced when you first opened? The neighborhood was a bad area. We also faced police harassment and other bad elements. What were some of the most fulfilling things that have happened? First, that the business is still open more than 42 years later, and meeting some of the greatest stars in the entertainment business. Joan Crawford, Shirley McClain, Lauren Bacall, Janet Jackson, Carol Channing, Rock Hudson and many other entertainers and sports figures have visited the club. What was the most outrageous thing that happened there? As I said, it was a bad area, so we’d do things to drum up business and attract attention. I would roller skate and twirl my baton in the middle of Clark Street, backing up traffic so they would notice we were there. The many times we were robbed are pretty memorable. What advice do you have for the younger members of the GLBT community? Always be yourself, don’t change to be what somebody else wants you to be. The AIDS crisis is still affecting our community, get education, make yourself aware, have fun, but stay safe.

MARGIE SUMMIT best known as the former owner of His ‘n Hers, a popular bar and restaurant, has been an active member of Chicago’s gay and lesbian community for almost 60 years. During the 1970s and early 1980s, Summit’s establishment was among the first to offer live entertainment, and she promoted the careers of numerous young gay and lesbian artists. His ‘n Hers became well known for its “open mike,” and was considered by many to have the “best burgers” in Chicago. Summit produced a record album “Gay and Straight Together,” featuring performers who appeared at the bar. The album is now in the archives of the Smithsonian. Summit was a member of Mattachine Midwest, and also led the “Gay $ Project”, creating a stamp to mark paper currency to demonstrate the economic impact of the GLBT community. She also appeared in the film “Before Stonewall,” which chronicled pre-1968 activities of the national gay and lesbian community. When the Chicago Transit Authority forced her to close His ‘n Hers (the bar was located beneath the Addison L stop) she moved her business to Broadway north of Hollywood. After enduring years of harassment there she closed her businesspermanently in 1993. She was honored later that year by being inducted into Chicago’s Gay and Lesbian 14 boi

Hall of Fame. We chatted with her about her experiences in the bar business. When did you open your first bar? 1971 What was it called? MS Where was it located? The corner of Clark and Erie How long was it open? 1 ½ years What were some of the regular features or events? It was the largest all women’s disco in Chicago What were some of the difficulties you faced? Since there where few bars for women at that time , keeping the under-age kids out. What were some of the most fulfilling things that happened? I met Frances Faye (a film star of the 1940s), and Rusty Warren (a bawdy female nightclub comic) at my bar, Rusty was appearing at Mr. Kelly’s (a Rush St. nightclub) What was the most outrageous thing that happened there? When streaking was started it was hard to have the customers keep their clothes on. Anything else you’d like to add? His N’ Hers was the best bar I owned…good music, food and a kind of a family atmosphere. The bar was ahead of it’s time. No gay bar at that time was offering music, food, and entertainers. That was my longest running bar. What advice do you have for the younger members of the GLBT community? When coming upon an older gay person, remember they most likely did a lot to make life easier for the younger generation…so don’t make fun of their age. (or they might kick your butt)….

My name is Steve. I was born in Cleveland, Ohio and am the youngest of four children. I lived in Cleveland until I was 18, at which point I went off to college at Miami University (Ohio). I had to drop out of school when I got my girlfriend pregnant, and we returned to Cleveland when I was 21. The ironic thing is that when she told me she was expecting, I was just about to come out to her. I tried to make the raltionship work for my son’s sake. We remained married for one-and-a-half years while I worked at a local clothing store. One day my wife ran off with another guy, leaving my son with me. It was tough at first, but now I think it’s the greatest thing that ever happened to me. My boss at the clothing store convinced me that I could make some extra money by modeling. She had a photographer friend take some shots and sent me to an open call for models. I was signed the next day for an underwear gig. I did a couple of photo shoots in my first month out, but nothing big enough to support me and my son. In Ohio there aren’t that many modeling gigs, even if I am “Hot in Cleveland” (I’m kidding, but I love Betty White.) I decided to move to Chicago to see if I could make it as a model here. My folks are taking care of my son while I get established, but I go home every

weekend that I can. He’s almost three years old now. Hopefully I’ll be able to take full advantage of this time build my career, so I can bring my son to Chicago with me full time before he starts school. I get a lot of swimwear and underwear, gigs, because I fill out a pouch pretty well. I’m not bragging, there’s a lot more potatoes than meat there, but the clients seem to like how it looks. I’ve even done some edgier styles of photo shoots. I am open to it all as long as it is fun, tasteful, artistic and done with class. I work as a graphic artist in an ad agency downtown. The money’s pretty good and the job provides me with many useful connections. I figure I can model for about ten more years. I also want to finish school with a focus on marketing, that’s what I do when I model after all, I market myself. The most important thing though is to be a good dad and role model for my son. boi 21

Screen Savor by Gregg Shapiro “Tangled” an animated 3D musical retelling of Grimm’s “Rapunzel” now available in a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, has its share of split ends. Abducted as a child by witchy Mother Gothel (voiced by Broadway diva Donna Murphy) for the youth restoring powers attributed to her loooong blonde hair, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) is raised in seclusion in a tower in the woods. Instead of the prince who finds and woos her as in the Grimm version, Disney’s Rapunzel becomes the (eventual) object of affection of roguish thief on the lam, Flynn (Zachary Levi). Of course, first they have to go through their awkward and comedic introduction stage, which involves lots of animated physical comedy. All along, Rapunzel is anxious to find the source of the light show that coincides with her birthday. In the meantime, Flynn wants to be reunited with his stolen booty, which he’s unable to pry from Rapunzel’s delicate hands. But wouldn’t you know it; the kids are kind of falling for each other. The songs, with music by Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and, don’t forget “Newsies”) and lyrics by Glenn Slater, are sweet, but they don’t hold a candle (sorry about that, Lumiere) to the ones Menken wrote with the late Howard Ashman. “Tangled” isn’t the worst film in recent Disney animated history, but it’s a few hairs short of being among the best.

“A Marine Story” reunites “The Gymnast”’s director Ned Farr and lead actress Dreya Weber in a story about a decorated, but mysteriously discharged, Marine Alexandra (Weber) and the positive influence she exerts on Saffron (Paris Pickard), a problematic teen girl. In German with English subtitles, “Sasha” is a queer coming out story about the titular piano student (Sascha Kekez) whose crush on his piano teacher Mr. Weber (Tim Bergmann) threatens not only his future musical plans but also his life at home with his homophobic family.

Cher’s Oscar-winning performance in the 1987 romcom “Moonstruck” looks even more luminous in high-definition on the Blu-ray edition with special features including audio commentary by Cher, writer John Patrick Shanley (“Doubt”) and director Norman Jewison, as well as a music featurette and the doc “Moonstruck: At the Heart of an Italian Family.” New to DVD, the 1954, black and white, truncated Colgate Comedy Hour version of Cole Porter’s musical “Anything Goes” features Ethel Merman, revisiting her role as Reno Sweeney, “glittering queen of New York nightlife,” setting sail on French ocean liner Luxembourg to marry to settle down with Sir Evelyn in England. But she doesn’t count on her ex, Harry (Frank Sinatra), trying to get her to call off the wedding in song (including “You’re The Top” and “Just One Of Those Things”). “William S. Burroughs: A Man Within” is Yony Leyser’s excellent and informative doc celebrating the influential and subversive gun-toting, queer writer, gay liberation pioneer and rebel, beat literary legend, junkie, heir to the Burroughs Adding Machine fortune, visual artist and father.

Stage Business by Rick Karlin In 1974 Studs Terkel interviewed a range of Chicagoans and simply asked, “What kind of work do you do?” The responses led to Terkel’s brilliant book, “Working”. Terkel, a “Friend of the Community” inductee into Chicago’s Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame, worked with Craig Carnelia and a number of composers and lyricists, including Stephen Schwartz of “Wicked” fame, to turn the book into a musical. The cast includes some of Chicago’s most established and talented artists; Barbara Robertson, Gene Weygandt and E. Faye Butler, each given a chance to shine. They are joined by a trio of talented young newcomers, Emjoy Gavino, Gabriel Ruiz, and Michael Mahler (previously wowing crowds in “Assassins” and “My Favorite Year” locally), who are more than up for challenge. by Harry Taint Sorry if there are typos, but I can hardly see the computer screen through this fucking black veil. Yeah, I’m mourning the death of my beloved Elizabeth Taylor (BTW-she hated to be called Liz). I’ll miss her, but not as much as the bartenders at some of the gay bars in WeHo, where she was a regular. Madame would often shuffle in to the bar in her house slippers and hold court. The most royal fruit-fly ever she counted Rick Hudson, Montgomery Clift and the aptly named (I saw it myself), Roddy McDowall among her friends.

Music, Comedy & Big Privates

Parlour will host a one hour sketch, improv, and stand-up comedy show every Saturday in Apr.. The popular Rogers Park/Edgewater bar presents “Comedy Beauty Parlour” at 10 p.m. and there’s no cover. If comedy’s not your thing, stop in on Mondays in April for karaoke. Pitchers of Miller Lite are $5 and you know the more you drink the better you sing... I hear that Geno at Cocktail privates are a partysized package. Oh, I’ve been corrected, Cocktail has party packages for private events. Maybe both are true. Ask Geno... No Foolin’, Hydrate has a whole slew of guest DJs coming up for April to kick off the club’s new house night called “United House” And, speaking of Hydrate (and who isn’t these days?), their last Manhole reunion party was such a hit they’re doing another one called “Manhole: Truck Stop” Things are going to get so dirty and greasy that I can’t give all the dirt here. Go to Manhole’s website for the lowdown. All I can say is “Free clothing check!”

Bears & Drag & Porn, Oh My!

If it’s spring the bears must be coming out of hibernation and they’ll all be heading to Chicago for IML on Memorial Day weekend. It looks the Hyatt on Wacker Drive will be covering the window walls of the lobby with plain brown paper again…Spin scores “Ru Paul’s Drag Race” finalist Yara Sofia on Saturday Apr. 9. I wonder if they’ll have subtitles for her show. I can never understand a word that queen is saying, And I speak Spanish! Then a week later, I’ll be left speechless as I watch porn star Shane Frost. My boyfriend (in my mind) will be at the bar on Friday Apr. 15 for the shower contest, but the audience will be the ones who need to be hosed down afterwards. He’ll also be giving away copies of our honeymoon DVDs. I call them honeymoon DVDs he calls them Falcon Porn. Tomato, Tomahto...Kit Kat is holding a “Britney Spears Brunch” Sunday, Apr. 3 as part of its wonderful prix fixe brunch special. Lift a glass to everyone’s favorite fallen Mouseketeer. Diva Madam X performs as Ms. Spears. Britney videos and film clips will play on all seven screens and Kit Kat will award Britney Spears-related prizes and giveaways throughout the day. Maybe a free head shaving? Call 773.525.1111 or go to kitkatchicago.com for more information.

Berlin hosts Tracy Ryerson and Whitney Mixter of Showtime’ s “The Real L Word” on Apr. 7 and on Apr. 14 presents the Chicago premiere of the doc “Arias with a Twist” which collaboration between master drag performer Joey Arias and master puppeteer Basil Twist that resulted in the 2008 stage extravaganza of the same name... Mark your calendars. Kathy Griffin will be the Friday night headliner at Milwaukee’s Pridefest this year... Chicago’s first Red Dress Party, part of a national event to create awareness and visibility for raising funds dedicated to the research and care of HIV/AIDS patients, is set for April 16... There will be plenty of balls and morning wood when the 35th Annual NAGAAA Softball World Series brings more than 4,000 participants and fans to Chicago from nearly 40 cities from Aug. 29 through Sept. 3. If you’d like to get a hands on experience, check out the web site, chicagoseries2011.com.

Polish your tiaras!

Before Prince William and Kate Middleton tie the knot across the pond, About Face Theatre (AFT) is throwing its own royal wedding at WONKA BALL 2011! AFT’s premier fundraising event will be held Thurs. Apr. 21 at the School of the Art Institute Ballroom. It all kicks off at 6:30 (whatever happened to the good old days when gay events started at midnight?) There’s a VIP reception with early-bird dining at 5:30 p.m.. Tickets are currently available at aboutfacetheatre. com... Everyone is “The Losing it in Lakeview”! They’re not (necessarily) going nuts, it’s a promotional special to encourage folks to get fit in the neighborhood. Among some of the specials are free mid-day meditation sessions at Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center, a free PiIates class at Illinois Bone & Joint Institute, a complimentary 3 day guest pass (includes group classes, parking and child care) at Formula Fitness and a one week membership at Quads. Go to lakevieweast.com for more information and other offers... Speaking of Lakeview and losing it, jot these dates down; Market Days will be Aug. 12 and 13, and “Night of 100 DQ” will be Oct. 25 and 26.

In Anti-Gay News

First the good news: Truth Wins Out and Change.org praised Apple today after the company removed a virulently antigay iPhone app launched by Exodus International that promoted “curing” gay people. The move came after 146,000 people signed a Truth Wins Out petition on Change.org calling on Apple to remove the app from iTunes. Now the bad news: The latest film from closet case Tyler Perry and his drag act is “Madea’s Big Happy Family.” Speaking of closet cases, I was all excited to hear that Jodie Foster was starring in a film called “The Beaver”. Then I found out her co-star and on-screen husband is Mel Gibson and he spends most of the film with his hand up a beaver puppet’s ass.

Helpless on Oak

I live in a two-flat and the building’s owners, a younger straight couple with two kids, live in the unit below me. I lost my job a few months ago and the money has been tight. It’s been hard for me to pay my rent lately. Luckily my landlords are pretty decent about it, I’ve even baby-sat for them a couple of times in exchange for a break in the rent. Last summer the husband asked if I’d like to help him remodel their bathroom. His wife and the kids were spending the weekend with her folks while we worked on the place. It was hot and sweaty work and we were just wearing shorts. He was up on the ladder hanging a light fixture while I steadied the ladder. I could see his cock through the leg in his shorts. He must have noticed me watching, ‘cause he got hard. We ended up having sex. Ace, it was the hottest sex ever, we did it about five times that afternoon. I could barely walk the next day. He’s hung and has incredible stamina . His wife noticed me walking funny the next day and commented that he must have really must have really made me work. I wanted to tell her but I couldn’t. Now he comes up to my apartment 2-3 times a week (whenever his wife isn’t around) wanting sex. I can’t say no to him, he’s the best top I ever had. The thing is, he says because I’m doing this not to worry about the rent for a while. I feel guilty and don’t know if I should continue and if not, how to stop it without losing my apartment.

Dear HO

This is a tricky situation. If he wasn’t married, it would be a no-brainer. You get a free place to live with great sex, what’s to think about? However, with the wife and kids, it gets a bit messy. If you want to stop, tell him that you feel 26 boi

awful about how this might affect his family. He’ll either tell you that he understands or he doesn’t care or that his wife wouldn’t care if she knew (she would, believe me). The fact that this has been going on for months leads me to believe that you really don’t want it to end. Do you know if he’s had sex with men before? If he has, you can justify it to yourself by realizing if he wasn’t doing it with you, he’d be doing it with someone else, maybe with someone who isn’t concerned about his family. In the end (no pun intended), it depends on your outlook on it. Whatever your decision, insist on using condoms.

Bar Belle

I’m in my 30s and I’ve always liked hanging out in bars and have never had trouble meeting guys. Lately, I’ve found myself talking to my favorite bartender more and more. He flirts with me quite a bit, sometimes if it’s a slow night; he’ll come around the bar and give me a back rub. On New Year’s Eve he gave me a hell of a kiss, leading me to think he may want more. To show my appreciation, I tip pretty well and he seems to pay special attention to me, but I’d like to know if he wants to go out. How can I tell?

Dear BB

Have you thought of asking him? It’s his job to help people enjoy themselves, so it may be just that. Or it may not. Be prepared for either answer, but don’t think that big tips mean you have a right to his company when he’s not working. Keep in mind that bartenders make more money if they’re friendly with the customers. In our community, that may include a little flirting (and removal of shirts).
