Hair Trends from the Pros! by Rick Karlin We asked some of the city’s top hair stylists for their take on what the hottest trends to look for this spring. Restoration Salons of Chicago started in 1993 in Lincoln Park and has expanded to Andersonville and Lakeview. Community involvement has included Chicago Takes Off and The Chicago House Fashion Show Brunch. Tim Weber is a hands-on owner providing services for 50 clients a week. We asked him for the hottest trends to expect as the temperature rises. “I feel that men’s cuts take on a new look this spring, with the emergence of military fades juxtaposed with a fuller crown. It’s time to show off the shape of our heads, but still have something to play with and style. “We are moving away from the faux hawk and seeing more real hawks with versatility for daytime. Blending the sides with the hawk can create a “Mad Men” part for more traditional days at work, but can be styled up to make a statement at night. “Color this summer is more natural. Getting a few highlights painted on in tones only one or two levels lighter than your natural color is replacing the traditional foil technique. Let the beach take over after that, and it will be amazing! No more stripes! “ Restoration Salons Lincoln Park, 2151 N. Sheffield 773-327-2151 Andersonville, 5349 N. Flashes Hair Design transformation specialist, Sal-E, is all about making “it” work for his clients. With more than 12 years experience in cutting, coloring, extensions, waxing and dreads. He is always happy to accept new clients and says that the best consultation is the one that actually takes place before the service. He suggests that you explain to your stylist what it is that you do not like about your hair. “It’s all about new beginnings and starting fresh. Start your journey with a little splash of color. Something like highlights to ease into a whole new world, or perhaps just a splash of color in the right place to make your eyes pop. Spring is also a good time to start body waxing and it’s not just your eye brows any more. Speaking of eyebrows, they should look clean and never overdone! Men’s hair will be short and messy yet approachable. For women, romantic layers showing body and volume. No more using the flat iron, time to play with texture using curling irons.” Flashes Hair Design 3740 N. Broadway 773/472-3355 www.flashessalon.com boi
Hair Trends from the Pros! Chicago Male Salon, named by Men’s Health Magazine as one of “America’s Best Salons and Barbershops” and in Chicago Magazine’s “49 Best Stylists” as well as Bravo TV claiming it “One of the Best Salons in Chicago!”, combines an upscale barber shop with spa services.
Zelaz Salon owner Joseph Gonzalez, reports a big trend in ‘40s and ‘50’s styles as well as a modern take on buzz cuts. Joseph says that for women the ombre look is very popular, leaving the hair more natural looking and wavy. The “beachy messy look” looks great with ombre color and is a great summer look. At Zelaz we specialize in “dry cutting”, which lets us customize the client’s hair how it is worn on a daily basis. Zelaz Salon 3321 N. Broadway 773.929.7909 www.zelazhairsalon.com

We asked Scott Neasham, owner of Chicago Male, what he saw as the big trends men’s hair styles this spring and summer, “It’s get back to basics. Less is more when it comes to the 50’s and 60’s rock & roll inspired hairstyles, which have been making a comeback at Chicago Male. Naturally curly or wavy hair is in style, especially when combined with a structured, tailored finish. Another trendy style for men, mastered by our stylists is the “undercut” or the “Darmody”, made popular from the TV show “Boardwalk Empire”. It’s an edgy and retro men’s haircut that’s clipped short on the sides, disconnected and left with length through the top. The “messy hairstyle” look for men is still popular this year with lots of tousled texture and movement. It’s casual, easy to wear, but still manly and rugged.” Chicago Male Salon 3418 N. Spring-Summer Fashion Trends by Anita Taylor After I returned from reviewing the designers’ spring and summer fashion shows, I knew exactly how Dorothy felt after she opened the door to her drab little Kansas house and realized that she was in Technicolor drenched Munchkinland. Back to reality, the trends seen on this seasons runways, along with some other fun fashion news.
Chino used to be synonymous with khaki, but now it’s easy to find these pants in vibrant red, powder blue or deep purple. Colorful denim showed up on the fall/winter runways and the trend is continuing throughout the upcoming season. The modern fit for casual pants rides low on the hips and tapers at the bottom. It’s not too skinny and it’s not too loose. Combine either with twotoned canvas & leather belts, which are all the rage. The great thing about these trousers is that they are easy to dress up by throwing on a lightweight sport coat. The trend in sport coats now is sleeves that contrast with the torso. I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of the look and expect that the style will look dated rather quickly. Other au courant looks that I predict will cycle through rather quickly are the acid-tinged colors you might encounter in stores right now and the big hair and broad shoulders late ‘80s/early ‘90s references. Does that mean that you should skip these trends completely? Certainly not, instead make small investments that you can well afford to cycle through your wardrobe quickly. This is where stores such as Zara, H&M and Top Shop are handy.
As I said, this season, it’s all about color and the hottest color of all is blue. Shades of azure running from deep ocean blue to powder blue to electric blue are all the rage. There are a number of other colors calling for attention as well. Joining blue as the ubiquitous color of the season are contrasting shades such as; moss, rust, mustard and eggplant (or aubergine, if you want to get fancy). It wouldn’t be a spring-summer fashion issue without a look at the latest trend in swimwear. Too often, the choices have been limited to two extremes: baggy and boring or constricting and conspicuous. Big, baggy board shorts don’t even look good on young guys with perfect bodies and everyone else looks like they’re trying to hard or trying to hide something. At the other end of the spectrum are the banana hammocks so popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s (and always in Europe) that just make everyone look slutty or lecherous.
Two items of clothing where these pops of color are most being utilized are in the soles of shoes, and denim or chinos. The trend in footwear is to pair canvas-topped casual shoes with a bright pop of color on the sole. These shoes are often paired with brightly colored pants as either contrast or complement. 12 boi
In trunk style shorts, we’re seeing a slightly shorter length, just a few inches above the knee and a closer fit that mimics the cut of regular shorts. Bolder patterns, especially color blocking stripes, tropical florals and the design of the season, paisley. But in the end, it’s all about fit. A suit that is too small will not flatter you, not will it make you look thinner. A suit that’s too big make thin men look skinny and heavy men look like slobs. Embrace your body, there’s no way to hide it in a swimsuit anyway.

Unusual Spa Treatments By Elizabeth R. Den Some spa treatments can be a bit overwhelming to wrap your head around. Ones we take for granted now, such as soaking in a bathtub full of mud, were considered odd in their day. Perhaps in a few years we’ll all feel the same about the following treatments.
Cool is the New Hot
New spa trends focus on cold treatments veering away from hot treatments, which have been popular in previous years. Cold based treatments help reduce inflammation in joints and muscles as well as increase circulation throughout the entire body. Time Crunch Quick spa services are in for the time-crunched spa-goer. Spas are now offering shorter versions of their most popular services. Think 25-minute manis, facials, waxings and mini-massages. Good Vibrations Treatments featuring vibration and sound therapy work on the belief that sounds can help align the body and energy. This technique is one of the oldest in the spa world, based on Indian medicine beginning 5,000 years ago. Chill Out The Arctic Ice Room at Qua Spa in Caesars Palace has heated floors and benches to curb the crisp air (55 degrees) accompanied by falling snow. While falling snow relieves stress, the cool temperature is supposed to tighten skin and reduce the appearance of large pores. Go For the Gold The 24 karat gold facial features gold leaf sheets molded into a facial mask. Steam is used to induce the gold’s penetration, which is claimed to reduce wrinkles and fine lines as well as lighten, brighten and hydrate the skin, leaving it firmer.
Something Fishy Though banned in many areas fish pedicures are very common throughout Asia. As part of the treatment, feet are immersed in a pool of flesh-eating carp, which nibble away dead skin from customers’ feet. The treatment concludes with a standard pedicure. With so many options, it’s difficult to select the spa for you. The following spas are said to be among the best in Chicago. The Spa at The Carlton Club The Ritz Carlton, 160 E. Pearson (Water Tower Place), 312.266.0000 Ultra-luxurious hotel spa with the service you expect from Four Seasons. Urban Oasis 939 W. North Avenue, 312.640.0001, and 12 W. Pearson, 312.840.8120 Trendy urban spa named for the sacred space of ancient Southwestern Indians. Tiffani Kim Institute 310 W. Chicago Spotlight: Danny Kopelson Interviews with leaders in Chicago’s GLBT community by Gregg Shapiro
The first paragraph of Danny Kopelson’s listing in Chicago’s Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame reads, “Since 1991, he has been an indefatigable arts and AIDS fund-raiser and a mainstay of the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus, in which he is a founding member. He has produced special events, including “Dance of Life”, that have raised millions of dollars to fight AIDS.” That hardly scratches the surface of his accomplishments. He moved to Boy’s Town right out of college (before it was called Boy’s Town) and has been a Lakeview resident ever since.
When did you come out and what was the experience like for you?
I came out in 1976 when I went to college at University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. I was finally away from home and the high school boys became college men. . I was lucky to have the support of most all my family, which made the coming out experience easier. Surprisingly, I only recently discovered I had been living my entire life with gay and AIDS shame and have just begun to learn love myself as the gay HIV+ man I am (“The Velvet Rage” is an amazing book about gay shame).
Please name five of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. 1) Oscar Wilde – Poet and author whose life and writings contributed a consciousness for future GLBT civil rights. 2) Harvey Milk – Gay activist. And the first openly gay man elected to office in the U.S. 3) Elton John – Came out at the peak of his career and has become a strong GLBT and AIDS activist, founding the Elton John AIDS Foundation. 4) Christine Jorgensen – Openly transsexual spokesperson in the early 1950s. I can’t imagine her bravery! 5) Elizabeth Taylor – Honorary GLBT! For her support of gay 22 boi
men throughout her entire career and her unyielding activism, fund raising efforts and awareness about HIV/AIDS.
What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large?
Working and volunteering for nearly 30 years in HIV/AIDS and GLBT activism and advocacy. I have raised millions of dollars for HIV/AIDS through creating special event fund raisers, including AFC’s Not Just Song & Dance gala, Dance for Life, TPAN’s Aware Affair and Chicago Takes Off. Also, as a founding member of the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus I have been able to express myself in music and theatre, representing the community, expressing the pain of AIDS, GLBT discrimination, politics, love, acceptance and the tremendous gay humor that makes up the complex lives of gay men over three decades.
What are your future goals and aspirations? With the personal growth I have
been working on the past couple of years, I feel ready and look forward to dating and, hopefully, finding a long-term partner. As it relates to work, I hope to continue to use my marketing, communications and fund raising skills doing good for the world. In volunteerism and activism, I will follow wherever that leads me.
Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation? Even if you think it doesn’t
affect you, educate yourselves about HIV/AIDS, talk about it with your friends. Learn how to prevent HIV and don’t further stigmatize those living with HIV. Learn about the rich history of the GLBT community. Support these issues with volunteerism and money.

Queen Alert
“Queen” at Smart Bar every Sunday will rock with rotating resident DJs. Party hosts Byrd Bardot Sal-E, Ruby Dee and Louis Lazu promise lots of royal craziness.… Speaking of new, the Andersonville clothing store, Bucky Gear, will be moving to a new storefront down the street next month… For Clubhouse Productins & Rails Marketing, things were hopping at Circuit last week for the “Urbano” party on Friday, and a great crowd turned out at Vision on Sunday for their weekly events… Speaking of hot Latins, Parlour’s hosting “Noches Caliente” on Thursday, April 5. The event will feature Latin music by DJ Puno. The following week they’re doing “Glam Review” a (tucked) balls to the wall drag show... Hydrate kicks off season two of Drag Idol on Thursday, Apr. 5. A winner will be chosen every week to take home a cash prize of $100 and secure a spot to compete in the finals for prizes worth more than $10K.
Big Stuff
Angel Velez, Mr. Chicago Leather 2012 will host “Battle of the Bulge” at Touché on Saturday, March 31 as a benefit for Chicago House. I’m not quite certain what bulge is the center of all this attention, but I can guess that it will grow due to all the attention it is getting. The benefit includes raffle prizes, live and silent auctions and the “Battle of the Bulge” Contest at midnight. A donation of $25 gets you access to the VIP (Very Indecent Pervert) reception from 9-11 with a hosted bar, delectable treats from area restaurants and gift bags.
Laying Down the Law
If guys and gals presenting their briefs turn you on, stop in at Sidetrack on Friday, March 30 for the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association’s “Meet the Bar”. The event is geared towards providing GLBT members of the legal profession and law students a chance to network with practicing GLBT lawyers and judges, but there’s nothing
to keep you from stopping in and maybe meeting a potential spouse… This might be a good time to mention “MISTER”, an app from the creators of the daddyhunt.com web site. It is designed primarily for the man over 40 who wants to meet and possibly hook up with his contemporaries. But there’s nothing stopping younger men who like a little mileage on their fellas from signing up at misterapp.com.
Sweet Smell of Success
The Chicago House sponsored Sweet Miss Giving’s Bakery, was founded as part of the agency’s jobs training/internship program. The fact that it put out some of the best pastries and desserts in the city was just an added bonus. It attracted the attention of a national wholesale baker that has proposed a licensing agreement to take part of Sweet Miss Giving’s product line to a wider audience. While that means an expanded job training program, it also means that some locations, such as at the French market, will be closed down... Speaking of sweet, Sidetrack is the site of the official Chicago CD release party for Madonna’s “MDNA”. The party is on March 30.
Phobia Alert
No it’s not a super villain from a gay comic book, it ‘s the latest concept from the guy who brought us all those fabulous “Nitro” parties, VisuWil. His new concept is “Event-a-Phobia,” they are a series of parties based upon how fun & sexy fear can be ...that is, when you embrace your own. According to a national survey, 86 percent of adults and 91 percent of youngsters are afraid of something (other than conservative Republicans). The next event, at Hydrate on Apr. 13, is “Ornithophobia” (fear of birds). Don’t wait to get your tickets, remember, the early bird gets the worm, and you can be certain that there will be some big, juicy worms at this event.

Hairy Situation
I have a friend who is losing his hair. At
first, it wasn’t so bad, but now he’s deep into comb-over territory. How can I explain to him that the way he’s combing his hair is only bringing more attention to the issue and looking ridiculous as well?
Dear HS,
This is a delicate subject, how you bring it up depends a lot on the history of your interactions. Write him a note or e-mail in which you preface your comments by stating that you know that he’s a bit sensitive about this issue, but you felt, as a friend, that you had to be honest with him. End the note by adding that you are hoping he takes the information as it was intended, as a loving way to help him and that you are willing to discuss the issue, if he feels that he wants to. If he never addresses the issue, don’t ever bring it up. Of course, you could go the passive-aggressive route, explain the situation to your own hair stylist, and see if he’d be willing to bring it up with your friend. Then, for your friend’s next birthday, give him a gift certificate to the salon. Usually I don’t advocate passive-aggressive techniques, but once in a while...
Sister Act
My sister lost her job. After being unemployed for some time, she decided to start her
own business as a dog washer. She had a van and found out it would cost her $3,000 to convert it into a portable dog shampoo facility. I lent her the money for the conversion. That was three years ago. Not only has she never mentioned paying me back, she never started the business. I’ve dropped hints that I would like her to pay me back she ignores them. What can I do?
Dear SA,
You are never going to see that money again, short of taking your sister to court, and even then, repayment would be a long
shot. Consider the $3,000 as a fee for an expensive life lesson. You should never lend money to a friend or relative unless you can accept the fact that you may never be paid back.
Whistle Blower
I work for a highly respected, politically active executive director of a well-known agency. We’ve had an on-again offagain sexual relationship for the past three years. At first, I was a willing sex partner, but when I wanted to end it, he threatened to fire me. What most people don’t know is that he is mismanaging the agency so badly that it may cease to exist in a few years. We have lost major grants because he didn’t file the necessary paperwork on time. That grant was about 20% of our operating budget. Consequently, we had to curtail some programs and let some staffers go. I’d like to “blow the whistle” on him, but I don’t think people would believe me.
Dear WB,
The only way out of it is to document everything. Make copies of anything that proves your allegations. Keep a journal, writing down dates and times of incidents that are inappropriate or illegal. When you feel you have enough proof, speak to someone you trust on the board of the agency. If there’s no one you trust on the board, contact the state’s attorney’s office. Of course, it goes without saying that you do not keep these materials at work, nor do you even write these materials on a work computer or via work e-mail. If the agency deals with health or mental health issues, you may be skating very close to violating federal laws regarding private information. Contact an attorney to guide you on that issue. Good luck. ______________________________________ Ace Magyar has a BA in communications, a MA in sex therapy and a PhD in zoology.
