DINING OUT FOR LIFE WEAR IT OUT • COVER BOI’S FITNESS TRENDS
Here it is the beginning of April and I haven’t even started working on my New Year’s resolution to lose weight. Bet I’m not the only one! One way to keep up with an exercise program is to feel good about doing it. Nothing makes you feel better than knowing you look good, so for this fitness edition we take a look at the latest in workout wear. The last thing you want is to show up at the gym in dated workout clothes. If you haven’t been to the gym since everyone was wearing legwarmers and knit headbands, you’ll seriously need to update your wardrobe, and probably get a note from your doctor before working out. As with all activities, there are trends in fitness programs too. Just a few seasons ago everyone was into Pilates and classes would fill up within minutes of registration. Now, there may not be such a rush. Hot yoga was the trend last season. What’s going to be the next hot thing in the future of fitness? No need to wonder, we’ve done all the research for you. Check out our article on fitness trends. Fitness is about taking care of your body, how about something to take care of others in our community? Dining Out for Life is a great way to help out local AIDS services providers while enjoying an evening out with friends. See our article on the annual benefit and list of participating restaurants. In our regular features, Gregg Shapiro gives us his take on Jake Gyllenhall’s new movie as well as an indie feature you’ll enjoy, while Ace Magyar offers advice to a passiveaggressive couple

In 1991, Dining Out For Life (DOFL) was created by an ActionAIDS volunteer in Philadelphia. DOFL is now an annual fundraising event involving the generous participation of volunteers, corporate sponsors and restaurants, produced in over 55 cities throughout the United States and Canada. Nationally, more than 3,500 restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds from this one special night of dining to the licensed agency in their city. Nearly $4 million dollars a year is raised to support the missions of agencies throughout North America. With the exception of the annual licensing fee of $1,000, all money raised in these cities stays there. On Thursday, April 28, Chicago’s EdgeAlliance will benefit from the 18th annual Chicago Dining Out For Life. Last year, the event raised more than $100,000 to continue its mission of providing housing with life services to women, children and men living with HIV/AIDS. This year the goal $250,000. Since 1992, EdgeAlliance has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for Chicagoans with HIV/AIDS through housing, compassionate care and support services. Now in its 18th year, EdgeAlliance Programs have assisted more than 300 homeless and low income children, families, and adults living with AIDS to achieve stable housing, improve wellness, and transition toward greater independence. In the past restaurants pledged a percentage of their sales, and, while that is still a possibility, many choose to pledge a specific amount. Restaurants may choose from three different levels of participation; Diamond ($1,500 donation), Platinum ($1,000) or Gold ($750 or 33% of sales). Restaurants may also choose to limit which meals are included; Breakfast (B), Lunch (L) or Dinner (D). Restaurants which serve three meals may opt to include any combination of meals in their participation. Participating restaurants as of our press date, others may be added at a later date, see diningoutforlife. com/Chicago for the most up to date lsting.

The best clothing for your fitness regime There are two iconic images when it comes to exercising and working out. One is of Jane Fonda in a leotard with her matching headband and leg warmers. The other is the video montage of Sylvester Stallone in his gray sweats which culminates in him running up the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art pumping his fists in the air. Exercise has come a long way since those images from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and so has workout wear. The basic must-haves, whether working out at home or at the gym are; support garments, exercise pants, workout shirts and a pair of comfortable, supportive shoes. Let’s start with support underwear. Forget about the porn films where one guy is spotting another on the weight bench and his balls are hanging out of his shorts. Working out “commando” in real life is dangerous. You’ll want something that keeps “the boys” lifted out of the way. In the old days our only option was the jockstrap, now there are plenty of possibilities, but it all boils down to two basic principles, support the boys and let them breathe. If you’re looking for something that offers support while accentuating your assets, check out XTG - the latest collection of sportswear; consists of underwear, gym shorts and tank tops made with comfortable and sweat absorbing ribbed cotton. Available locally at Egoist on Halsted byWaveland. Unless you’re working out at home, you’ll need to wear pants. It’s not just for modesty’s sake that pants are required. Although it may be a turnon for some folks to lie face down on a workout bench after a pair of butt cheeks rested there, it’s not very sanitary. Pants with pockets are a great choice so that you have someplace to store your gym locker key. Men’s baggies are usually the best choice for body builders, especially those with ginourmous leg muscles. For most folks, jogging pants made of stretchable polyester are great as they allow a full range of motion while you are training. Karate pants with flare cuts are a great option as well. Lulu Lemon, best known for women’s yoga wear,
also carries men’s shirts, jackets and pants. They’re pricey, but the up side of that they’ll hem your workout pants for free. You’ll need a variety of workout shirts depending on your workout and the temperature. Any shirt should provide full range of motion and wick moisture away from the body. There’s nothing wrong with a plain cotton t or sweatshirt, however the moisture (a nice way to say sweat) in the shirt remains clinging to your body. While that can look hot in a Bruce Weber photograph, it’s not very comfortable. Most men’s workout shirts are designed with porous weaves so as to allow easy access for the air to move around the sweatiest areas of the torso. A pair of comfortable rubber-soled shoes is an essential part of workout attire, not matter what exercise you’re doing. Pick out the ones that provide soft cushions in the interiors, support for your arches and strong, sturdy soles. The best place to buy your initial pair of exercise shoes is at a store with trained salespeople who can match you with the best shoe for your exercise regime. Of course, you’ll want to wear socks. Not only do socks prolong the life of the shoe, but also provide extra cushioning. Exercise socks should also be made of fabric that draws sweat from the foot. Many brands of socks are now made from fabric that has antibacterial qualities woven into the fabric. The antibacterial properties not only reduce foot odor, but also help stem problems such as athlete’s foot and fungal infections. While fancy clothing is not a necessity for getting and staying in shape, it is important to choose apparel that is suitable for the activities you plan. Well designed apparel should keep you dry, offer support without chafing, binding, or pinching and be made of durable, moisture-wicking material. Apparel is available for any type of weather conditions and any conceivable activity. With summer (hopefully) coming up, you’ll want to select fabrics are perforated, allowing air to pass through for additional cooling. Stick with light colors for outdoor workouts. Comfort, support and practicality should always guide your choices in workout wear. Making a fashion statement should not be the main focus of your workout attire. However, you never know whom you might run into at the gym. And, of course, take that advice our mothers all gave us, always have on clean underwear! boi 17
Blends
Often, blends of two or more fabrics create the best fitness apparel. A polyester-spandex workout shirt, for example, would be breathable and stretchable, and it wouldn’t shrink in the dryer. Cotton incorporated into a fabric can make it softer and more easily treated with antibacterial properties.
Types of Fitness Clothes Compression Clothing
Compression shorts and shirts are tight clothes, usually made of Spandex, worn as a base layer under outer exercise clothing to provide support, keep muscles warm and help prevent chafing.
Exercise Pants
Come in a variety of styles these days. For jogging or high-impact exercise pants made of a polyester blend will be more supportive. A little stretch is good for allowing you a full range of movement. Also, workout pants with zippers or snaps at the ankles can be handy if you want to remove the pants without too much hassle at any time during your exercise routine.
Fitness Shirts The Fabric of Our Lives Cotton
While excellent for most daily activities, cotton collects moisture and doesn’t breathe as well as some athletic wear made of synthetic materials and it also tends to shrink. It can be much more inexpensive than man-made fabrics, and is sufficient for a less rigorous exercise routine.
Polyester
A common fitness apparel fabric because it is lightweight, crisper than nylon and it resists shrinking and stretching. Polyester is also quick-drying. However, it pills easily, is not porous and tends to collect static.
Nylon
Tough lightweight, strong, and fast-drying, it doesn’t absorb much moisture. Like polyester, it is easily washable and won’t shrink and also has a tendency to pill and collect static.
Spandex
Spandex is flexible, lightweight, stretchable and retains its original shape well. Lycra is the brand name for spandex produced by DuPont. 18 boi
Fitness shirts are similar to the specialized jerseys and sports apparel professional athletes and sports teams wear. Made of polyester or another synthetic fiber or blend, they are designed to help regulate body temperature, incorporating sections of porous, jersey-like weaves to keep the air moving in sweaty places such as the underarms.
Sweatshirts
Sweatshirts and hoodies are good for staying warm before and after a workout or for working outside on a cool day. The best hoodies and sweatshirts have pockets for storage of keys, gym passes and identification.

Hi, my name is Jerry. I got my start as a personal fitness trainer in Miami where I trained in an NCCA-accredited program. I’m now a Certified Personal Trainer and I’ve been based in Chicago for the past three years. If you choose to work out with a personal trainer, make certain that he or she has been trained and is a Certified Personal Trainer. After all, you’re putting your health and safety in their hands.
Interactive Video Workouts
If you can’t afford a personal trainer, consider sharing one. With the economy as tight as ever, many this is a growing trend. The tight economy also encourages personal trainers to take on small groups rather than just individual clients. Training two or three people at one time makes good economic sense for trainers and allows clients to get personalized services at a much lower price.
Companies are beginning to get it; a healthy staff = better business! Healthier employees mean that there’s less downtime due to illness. Companies which include exercise components in their fringe benefits find that they have less staff turnover, reduced absenteeism, a more cooperative workplace and most importantly, lower health insurance rates.
As I said, “Buddy Training” is a growing trend. In fitness as with any activity, there are trends and, in the words of that great philosopher, Heidi Klum, “One day you’re in, the next day you’re out.”
Thanks to Wii and Kinect, many folks are getting more active in front of the tube. Anything that can make workouts fun stands a greater chance of success. The interactivity of the programs designed for these platforms, such as Wii yoga, succeeds where mere videos couldn’t; in giving feedback and helping improve technique.
Corporate Support
There are a couple of trends that, while not completely off the radar are not as popular as they once were.
Pilates
Here are some of the current fitness trends and a couple to which we’ll be saying, “Auf wiedersehen.”
Popular among celebrities, Pilates may become become a victim of the economy. Instructor training is specialized and many gyms are starting to think it doesn’t offer a good return on their investment.
Core Training
Stability Balls
Boot Camp
Last year “toning” shoes became best sellers for several footwear companies, as they promised eager buyers a tighter butt, toned thighs and even greater fat loss, with provocative commercials, with the camera focusing on the models’ butts instead of the shoes. This is a fad that has faded.
Training that emphasizes conditioning of the middle-body muscles, including the pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen are important not just for appearance, but for health, as weaknesses in these muscles tends to increase injuries with even the slightest physical exertion. High-intensity programs which incorporate cardiovascular, strength, endurance, and flexibility drills in indoor and outdoor settings, modeled after military-style training.
Functional Fitness
Strength training to improve balance and ease of daily living. Seniors and those recovering from injuries benefit from customized strengthtraining regimens designed to improve the ability to perform daily activities. As the babyboomer generation ages, so do its needs, and as a major demographic, those needs become trends.
Rubber stability balls aka BoSu Balls, while great for core strengthening and balance, are a fad that made its mark and has run its course.
Exer-Shoes
Shake Weight!
Perhaps the most lampooned fitness trend since Suzanne Somers’ Thigh-Master. The Shake Weight basically was a tube with weights at each end that moved as you shook the weight. They should have marketed it as the “Hand Job Plan” ‘cause that’s what it looked like you were doing. The irony is that it is very good for developing stronger upper arms. The Shake Weight was used for laughs on every talk show and people bought it as a gag gift. Maybe that was the manufacturer’s plan all along. boi 21
Screen Savor by Gregg Shapiro On the Big Screen With more than a subtle nod to “Inception” and “Avatar,” “Source Code” is a decent, tautly paced sci-fi thriller. Unknowingly part of a top secret government project, Afghanistan-deployed helicopter pilot Colter (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds himself on a computer train heading for downtown Chicago. He is seated across from Christina (Michelle Monaghan) who insists on calling him Sean and when he looks at himself in a mirror he sees someone else’s reflection. But before he can figure out what is happening a bomb explodes on the train killing all the passengers. It is then that Colter wakes up in a metallic pod where he is being addressed via monitor by military personnel, including Goodwin (Vera Farmiga) and a government funded (mad) scientist (a completely miscast Jeffrey Wright). As it turns out, Colter, who was killed while on a mission, is in a state of post-mortem suspended animation and is being utilized in a series of simulations, a time reassignment known as a source code. In eight minute increments, Colter is returned to the train at the same moment, each time with more knowledge than the previous time, to track down the bomb and then the bomber who plans to detonate an even more powerful explosive device in the city itself. While director Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie) doesn’t improve on his excellent directorial debut “Moon,” he does make good use of special effects and succeeds in keeping the audience on the edge of their seats for a majority of the movie. As this type of sci-fi action flick goes, you could certainly do worse than having to look at Jake Gyllenhaal for 90 minutes. When it comes to being an actor/director, David Schwimmer is no Ben Affleck. But with his latest film, “Trust,” about the dangers facing teenagers on the internet, he’s showing signs of improvement. Annie (Liana Liberato), a fourteen-year-old high-schooler, is a reflection of her generation. When she’s not texting on her phone, she’s making what she thinks are friends her own age in chat rooms. 22 boi
But, sadly, that’s where she’s wrong. It turns out Charlie (Chris Henry Coffey), with whom she’s been chatting on a regular basis, and who is never anything but encouraging and gentlemanly, turns out to be older than the 16 he initially claimed. Like the 2011 gasoline prices, Charlie’s age keeps going up in number. First he apologetically admits to being a 20 year old college sophomore and then a 25 year old grad student. Annie is put off by these revelations, but once Charlie calls her he is able to persuade that their age difference is not a big deal. Annie knows that this electronic relationship won’t sit well with her parents, advertising agency head Will (Clive Owen) and realtor Lynn (Catherine Keener) or her older, college-bound brother Peter (Spencer Curnutt), so she keeps Charlie a secret. Before long, Annie agrees to meet Charlie face to face at the mall. When she does, she can barely disguise her disappointment at discovering that he’s really in his late 30s. The next thing you know he’s lured her to a hotel room where he has her modeling the underwear that he bought for her. He then proceeds to rape her, videotaping everything. There’s a noticeable change in Annie. Her best friend tells the school guidance counselor what happened to Annie. Once the truth is revealed, the police are called to the school and Annie is taken into custody. Will and Lynn are called to the hospital where Annie is being examined. They react as any parents would, with shock and horror. Annie begins meeting with therapist Gail (Viola Davis), while Will and Lynn try, each in their own way to deal with the gravity of the situation. But the last thing they expected was that Annie’s feelings for Charlie would only get stronger and that she would become his greatest defender. Liberato, Owen and Keener all give nuanced and praiseworthy performances, with Schwimmer getting the most out of his cast. Topical and troubling, “Trust” is sure to spark many discussions and debates between parents and teens.

by Harry Taint Congratulations to Gay Chicago Magazine on its 35th anniversary, which decided to do as all folks should do on their 35th and got a make-over. The new look drops the Magazine from the title and puts it in the category of the Red Eye, which better showcases the publication’s new focus on news and entertainment. Let’s get all socially conscious for a couple of secs, shall we? Have to say congratulations to James Cappleman who defeated Molly Phelan in 46th Ward, giving the City Council its second openly gay alderman. However, I’m even more excited by that fact that incumbent Ald. Bernie Stone (who has run the 50th ward as his own little fiefdom) was upset at the polls by Debra Silverstein. You can bet that both those wards are going to see some drastic improvements. Wow, being serious is exhausting, let’s get on to the dish. There’s some major housecleaning going on at Howard Brown Health Center (HBHC). It’s all part of restoring the trust the community had in HBHC and comes none too soon, with the clinic’s annual fundraiser coming in May… Fashion designer and “Project Runway” season four winner Christian Siriano will be the featured guest for Columbia College Chicago’s Conversation in the Arts on Apr. 25. Nena Ivon, former long-time Chicago Saks Fifth Avenue fashion director, will interview him. Siriano, who made “Hot Tranny Mess” a catch phrase, has designed clothing for Victoria Beckham, Lady Gaga, and Heidi Klum. The open to the public lecture will be held in the Film Row Cinema, 1104 S. Wabash Ave. Theater seating is limited so advanced registration is highly recommended. For seat reservations, go to at www. colum.edu/conversations. Halsted’s is giving new meaning to the phrase “He is Risen” this Easter with a gospel brunch hosted by Tajma Hall. It will be more like, “He is raising the roof!”…Speaking of Easter, Madam X performs at Kit Kat for “The Big Divalicious Easter Brunch.” . . .If you like to slip it in the backdoor, mark May 27 on your calendar. That’s the date of The Ram’s “Shameless” party. It’s being held during IML weekend and everyone must use the rear entrance…Parlour is bringing the young guys up to Rogers Park with its new “BoyBar” dance party on Friday nights. It seems hot young guys dancing draw a bigger crowd than drag queens. Imagine!?!?!
Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus knows how to throw a party, as anyone who attended the “Big Package” auction at Sidetrack can attest. The next thing up their collective sleeves is the Divas Ball on Apr. 30 at Hydrate. The $15 admission includes 2 drink tix. DJR will be spinning all the greatest divas’ hits and you can expect a plethora of divas crowding the dance floor…Cocktail is going to Jack you up on Apr. 29. The famous Tennessee distiller of moonshine, served in fine establishments and questionable joints since 1866, will be giving away samples of their sipping whiskey…Spin, home of all things related to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” welcomes the lushly hipped Alexis Mateo from this season’s show with local phenom, Jade, on Apr. 30, with special guest, Alexis’ cast-mate the undecipherable, Yara Sofia. Tix are $5 in advance, $10 at the door and VIP “Meet & Greet” Place your order at http://spin-nightclub.tix.com. When folks ask why “Glee” is so popular with gay men (other than the obvious combination of handsome men and singing divas) they need look no further than the witty writing. Such as the words uttered by the dim-bulb character Brittany, “Dolphins are just gay sharks.” She must have been thinking of Monday’s “Boom Boom Room” party at Green Dolphin Street, which may just be the foremost house music party in Chicago…”Twinkie and the Beast”, now playing at Hydrate, is brought to you by the same folks who did “Snow White and the Seven Drag Queens” and “Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Queer Tale”. This time Tony Lewis and his accomplices the story of a young twink named Swell who is taken prisoner in the home of a beastly drag queen (oh, that same old story). While we’re being all artsy, the classic novel “From Here to Eternity,” which was made into a famous movie starring Burt Lancaster and Frank Sinatra, will soon be re-released with gay content censored in the original restored. The novel is about life on a U.S. military base in Hawaii in 1941. Author James Jones fought bitterly to keep two references to homosexuality in the book, which was published in 1951, but his editors overruled him. In one scene, a character (played by Frank Sinatra in the movie) talks about prostituting himself and performing oral sex on wealthy men. Frank Sinatra giving blow jobs, now that I would pay money to see! boi 25
Anguished Southerner In Fairview
My girlfriend wants me to commit to a monogamous relationship. I’ve only been out for a few years and really want to explore my options. She’s been out for much longer (and she’s about 15 years older), so I see why she’s ready to settle down. She’s really great and I think that if I break it off, I may regret it. I just want to see what it’s like to be a young, single lesbian. I’m only 24 and this is my first relationship with a woman. What should I do?
Dear ASIF,
Look at your letter to me. You state three times that you want to explore your options. That pretty much answers your question. It’s not what I think you should do, it’s what you want to do. Oscar Wilde once said, “It’s what one didn’t do that one most regrets.” Be honest with your girlfriend; say you need to get all your freakiness out before you settle down Yes, you may not find someone as great as she is, or you may find someone better, that’s the chance you take. Don’t expect her to wait for you, though
Shy Guy
My boyfriend wants to go to one of those “Body Electric” workshops to make our relationship better. I’m perfectly happy with the way our relationship is going. I know those kinds of workshops feature a lot of nudity and I’m just not comfortable with being naked around that many people. My boyfriend’s got a really hot body and a rather large penis. I’m not nearly as well-endowed and think I would be embarrassed.
Dear SG,
You may be comfortable in your relationship, but it’s obvious your boyfriend isn’t. He is clearly interested in working out whatever problems he sees, so that’s a positive. I’m guessing that part of this stems from your discomfort with your body. I’ve never gone to a Body Electric workshop, but my understanding is that the entire purpose is to provide a supportive atmosphere for working on exactly the kind of issues you have. Here’s a secret, men with big dicks have body issues too. Try to set 26 boi
up a meeting with the folks who run these workshops to talk about your feelings. Let me know how things turn out.
Passive Aggressive Partner
My husband and I have been together 25 years. We are the perfect example of opposites attract. I’m outgoing and enjoy spending time with friends, he’s slow to warm to folks, but has friends he’s known for 30+ years who he chats with on the phone a lot. We’ve done pretty well accommodating each other’s personality traits, but he’s very passive aggressive when it comes to trust issues. (I’ve never cheated on him, but his ex did all the time) He’ll tell me to go out to be with my friends, but then he’ll call me 5-6 times during the night, or he’ll say, “Oh, you’re going out again?” I invite him to join me, but he usually declines, or if he goes, he’s ready to leave in half an hour. I love him, but he drives me nuts.
Dear PAP,
If you’ve been together 25 years, you must realize by now that he’s not going to change. The only way to deal with passive-aggressive behavior is to face it head on and call him on it. Make a simple statement such as, “I’m going out with my friends Friday after work. You’re welcome to join us, but we’re going to be out for quite a while.” If he still joins you and wants to leave early, let him go without any kind of scene, but don’t offer to drive him or make any changes in your plans. Another option is to offer to have him join you for part of the evening, sort of “We’re going for drinks and then to dinner before we go dancing, do you want to join us for dinner?” Above all, you should not feel any guilt or curtail your activities, you’ve invited him along, and it’s up to him to decide what he wants to do.
