Benefit Season The Red Dress Party is a national event dedicated to creating awareness and visibility for the HIV/AIDS movement and raising funds for organizations that provide vital community services. The Chicago event will take place on Apr. 21 at the Joffrey Ballet studio. The origin of the event reads like a classic romantic movie; in the early 1990s, two men were dating when they both contracted HIV/AIDS. To show their love and dedication they vowed when one of them passed away the other would attend their funeral adorned in a red dress. Currently there are Red Dress parties all over the United States, the Chicago event is a benefit for The AIDS Foundation and Equality Project.

The event kicks off with a VIP reception and red carpet arrival with the ubiquitous Miss Foozie greeting arriving guests. An hour later, those with general admission tickets arrive and mingle. At 10:30, special guest musical performer, Beverly McClellan performs. The party continues until midnight, with an after party just up the street at Downtown bar. While drag is not required, it is encouraged and you’ll find many people whom you wouldn’t expect to wear a frock, rocking one out. Red attire is mandatory, however. Tickets for the 2012 Chicago Red Dress Party, being held at the Joffrey Ballet Studios, 10 E. Randolph range in price from $100-$300. For more information, go to chicagoreddressparty.org. boi

VITAL BRIDGES Twenty years ago, volunteers mobilized across metropolitan Chicago to help their friends, family members and colleagues who were battling HIV/AIDS. Their efforts and dedication to provide food, shelter, care and education about HIV grew and expanded, becoming Vital Bridges. In 1988, an HIV diagnosis for most was a death sentence. Today, HIV is still incurable but those who have the disease can lead fruitful and fulfilling lives with the right medications and resources. Today, the organization serves nearly 2,000 people impacted by the epidemic annually. Since its founding in 1988, Vital Bridges has provided more than 10 million meals, 600,000 nights of shelter and 250,000 hours of counseling to over 10,000 clients.

The vast majority of people living with HIV and AIDS live at or below the poverty line, struggling to meet their daily needs while dealing with a complex, debilitating and incurable disease. Since 1981, 11,000 men, women and children in metropolitan Chicago have died from AIDS. Vital Bridges provides high quality basic services through five program sites located on the North, West and South sides of Chicago as well as in the suburbs of Elk Grove Village and Oak Park. Its work begins by providing the most basic needs – nutritious food and safe housing, then working to stabilize clients’ lives and guide them on a path to improve their health.

Take 5 With Gary Chichester Interviews with leaders in Chicago’s GLBT community by Gregg Shapiro

Gary Chichester has provided more than 40 years of commitment and work to the gay and lesbian community. In 1971, he cofounded the Chicago Gay Alliance, which created Chicago’s first gay and lesbian community center. He has served on the Chicago Commission on Human Relations’ Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues since 1989 and has sat on the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame Committee from its inception in 1991. His organizational involvements since 1970 have included the annual Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade (starting with the first one), the Metropolitan Business Association, the Chicago Gay Health Project, the Gay Rights National Lobby, the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Metropolitan Chicago, the 1979 and 1987 National Marches on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, the NAMES Project, the Gay and Lesbian Press Association, the National Association of People with AIDS, Strike Against AIDS and the Chicago Gay Speakers Bureau among others. In 1992, he was inducted in Chicago’s Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame. We recently posed out “Take 5” questions for Gary.

When did you come out and what was the experience like for you?

I came out to myself at the age of seventeen and it was a pretty simple acceptance. I left Chicago and hopped a plane for LA. When I landed, it was like I had a transformation. I was an “instant” gay. As for my family, I always told myself if I was ever asked, I would always tell the truth. Being seen in the audience of a televised show featuring a gay topic lead to “the” question from my family. To this day, questions regarding my lifestyle continue to come up as issues in our community change. I still find myself explaining these issues 22 boi

to them. It’s always an education. I am thankful to have a loving family.

Please name five of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them.

My personal heroes: Richard Barnes, my first true love, for showing me that two men can be in love, be friends and help each other grow. RJ Chaffin, who knew me like an open book and still was my best friend. Renee Hanover, a generous and high-visibility advocate for human rights of all kinds. William B. Kelley, my go-to person for his opinion on all issues facing our community. Chuck Renslow, my mentor and the man who encouraged me to get “involved” with the issues that concern our community and how to make a difference. I would also like to add Paul Adams to my list to represent all the “in-your-face” activists who put themselves on the line to create change and move our community forward.

What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large?

I am very proud of my involvement with the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame. I believe the Hall of Fame is a wonderful vehicle to honor those GLBT Chicagoans who made vast contributions to make our city a better place and a way to share our vibrant history with the world.

What are your future goals and aspirations?

I plan to continue my work with the Friends of the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame and hope to see full marriage equality in my lifetime.

Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation?

Be strong with who you are and don’t let hate override your life.

In The Know, On The Go by Harry Taint

Boys! Boys! Boys! Move over dancing boys! In a departure from its usual entertainment, Cocktail will feature a live rap performance by Kaycee Ortiz on Friday, Apr. 13. The original music is a new thing for the bar, but don’t worry, the boys in their underwear will continue… Speaking of boys in their underwear, Lakeview’s hottest clothing store, Cram, will celebrate its anniversary with a huge party on Apr. 19. The event always features male models and fun – or is that redundant?... Get Bent at Parlour. On Saturday, Apr. 14, the Rogers Park riot house kicks off ‘Gender Bent” at 9:30... Tequila is for more than just slammin’ back, you know. Check out the finer points of Mexico’s most addictive export at El Mariachi on Wednesday Apr. 29 when Riazul Tequila will host a tequila tasting. San Francisco’s hottest dance party comes to town on Apr. 28 when Locoya’s “I just Wanna F*ckin’ Dance” lands at Hydrate… jocks! jocks! jocks! Get your Roger Federer on and sign up for Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association’s tennis league on Saturday, Apr. 21 at @tmosphere… Scrum it up! (I don’t know if I used that word correctly, but it’s the only thing I know about soccer and I had to find something to grab your attention). You won’t want to miss the Chicago Dragons’ Bachelor Auction on Apr. 28 at Sidetrack. Hot jocks, date packages and cocktail. How could you go wrong?... If your teen years weren’t about sports and boys but angst and zits you should check out “TV Reruns – The Season of Sin” on Tuesday, Apr. 17 at Mary’s Attic. It’s all part of

a series by A Reasonable Facsimile Theater performing staged readings of television scripts. The shows are at their most hilarious when the source material is the cheesiest, so imagining the fun to be had when the troupe explores puberty via scripts from “The Brady Bunch”, Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Punchy Brewster”. I wonder what wine goes best with that cheese platter. I do love me a big package Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus’ annual “Big Package” auction will be held at Sidetrack on Saturday, Apr. 14. The “packages” include prizes and certificates for products and services which are being auctioned off this year by Miss Richfield 1981, and that alone would be reason enough to attend. That queen is funny. I had the honor of performing with her a few years ago in PTown, and she is as witty and funny as she is glamorous. However even she will have to go some to outshine the package which features our own cover boy, Michael Elder, modeling some underwear… Broadway star and uber-hottie, Cheyenne Jackson, will be strutting his stuff around Logan Square as part of the 4th Annual Chicago International Movies & Music Festival. “One Night Stand”, screening on Sunday, Apr. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Logan Theatre, is a documentary about “24 Hour Musicals”, an annual charity event in New York City during which four 15-minute stage musicals are written, cast, rehearsed and performed in a single day. Among the actors featured in the film are Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live), Richard Kind (Mad About You), Alicia Witt (Cybill, Friday Night Lights), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) and the handsome Cheyenne Jackson (Xanadu, 30 Rock), who sadly remains fully clothed.

Ask Ace

Relationship & Sex Advice

Freaked in Franklin Park

About a year ago, my best friend won a fairly substantial amount in the lottery. Recently he has started having cosmetic surgery treatments. I have to admit, the results of the first surgery was fantastic. After his liposuction, he went from having a slight spare tire to having a kicking sixpack. He also had pec implants done at the same time. He’s also had a butt lift and his lips plumped. The results from that surgery are not quite as successful. His lips now have that waxy look. He was a nice looking guy, but he’s starting to look like a science experiment gone bad. What can I do?

Dear FIFP,

It’s time for an intervention. I’m assuming that since you feel this way, that other friends have noticed and possibly made comments. If not, ask yourself, if perhaps that problem is in your perception. I doubt that it is, but it’s always an aspect that needs to be considered. While there’s nothing wrong with having a tweak done here and there, the problem arises when folks don’t know when to stop. Reputable medical professionals should advise patients when enough is enough, but we all know that there are some professionals who are too money hungry to say, “No.” Sit down with your friend and point out the successful work he’s had done. Then explain your concerns doing your best not to sound accusatory or judgmental. It’s a fine line to walk between being supportive and ending up friends with someone who looks like Joan Rivers twin sister.

Rock & A Hard Place

I work for a small, family-owned flower shop. I’ve been with the company for almost 20 years and love my job. The owners treat me as if I’m a member of the family, which is great because I have no family members in the area. They all know that I’m gay and it hasn’t ever been an issue. A few weeks ago, the youngest son of one of the brothers who own the business came back to Chicago. He’d been working for a tech start-up that went under. He’s now working in the family business. When we go out to set up weddings or bar

mitzvahs he loads and drives the truck. I ride to the site with him and put together the designs. On the past few jobs he’s been asking me for blow jobs when we’re on site. I’ve laughed it off, but he’s serious. He says that if I don’t, he’ll tell his family that I propositioned him. I would never do that, I’ve known him since he was eight years old.

Dear RAHP,

This is where the saying, “Blood is thicker than water” comes into play. If it was any other employee, you could just march up to your boss and explain the situation. You can bet if you did that now, his son would deny it and with whom is your boss going to side? I say, call the kid’s bluff. Refuse to play his game and try to bring someone else with you on these jobs. My guess is that he will tire of playing the game. In the meantime, keep yourself open to the idea of finding a new job should things get ugly.

Incredulous at Clark & Kildare

Is it true that Rick Santorum’s last name is a synonym for a sex act?

Dear ICK,

It was just a matter of time before this story came back into focus. When the “conservative former senator” (our legal department says I can’t refer to him as a right-wing-nut-job-Hitler-wannabe) was last in the public spotlight he was the subject of a prank by columnist Dan Savage. Savage used his knowledge of how search engines operate to arrange it so that when anyone did a Google search for “Santorum” the first results would read “The frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex.” Savage admits that it was a crass joke and that was part of his point. It still comes up when searching “santorum”, but technically, the answer is no, his name is not a synonym for a sex act. It’s a synonym for a sex byproduct. And, having studied Latin, I’ll point out that the plural would be “santora” ________________________________________ Ace Magyar has a BA in communications, a MA in sex therapy and a PhD in zoology.
