SWIMWEAR: SKIN IS IN HOW TO PACK FOR A SUMMER GETAWAY
“Hot time, summer in the city, back of my neck gettin’ dirty and gritty” That’s how the old song from the ‘70s goes. Do you think we’ll ever see summer? At times it seems as if Chicago’s got six months of winter, but we’re going to thaw you out and make your temperature rise with a look at BOI’s Swimware for 2011 and that skin is in! Our fashion guru Anita Taylor jetted down to Miami a few months ago to get the lowdown on what the hot trends in men’s swimware. Imagine having to spend a week in South Beach in January looking at male models in barely-there swim suits. Someone give that woman a raise! When summer does get here, you may find yourself invited for a weekend (or more!) at some hot daddy’s lake house, or on his boat. If you’re really lucky maybe he’ll whisk you away to PTown or Fire Island (Hell, I’d be happy to go to Saugatuck). You’ll need to know what to pack. After all, you don’t want to look like you’re moving in and bring all your luggage, but you want to be prepared. Anita comes to the rescue again with a guide to how to pack the perfect weekend bag; just don’t forget the condoms. If your travels include any drag events, we’ve even got that covered ; just don’t forget to pack the duct tape. And, of course, Ace Magyar gives advice to a few more folks, Gregg Shapiro doles out some film recommendations, Harry digs up the latest on what’s going on in our community and I “Eat & Tweet” for your pleasure. Whew! No wonder I’m exhausted all the time. I’d better take a little nap to get ready for our next issue, everything you need to know about International Mr. Leather, and then some.

Men oiled up and strutting their stuff. No it’s not a typical night at Steamworks, I’m talking about the Miami Swimwear Show in Miami Beach in January. Lucky me, I used my connections (Tim Gunn is a dear, dear, friend from our days in the NY rag trade) to get a sneak peak at what’s going to be hot this summer. Designer labels such as Ed Hardy, Nalia, Parke & Ronen and True Religion and Trina all focused their attention above the knee, and why not? That’s where all the goodies are! The thigh-grazing, slimmer silhouette trunks look fresh while still referencing vintage swimwear. Thank goodness we’ve moved out of the popularity of board shorts (or as I called them bored shorts). But, as they say, one picture’s worth a thousand words, so let’s take a gander, shall we?

by Anita Taylor Summer in the city has its charms, nearly naked men playing volleyball at the beach, nearly naked men running on the jogging paths, nearly naked men riding bikes along the lake…where was I? Oh, yes, the joys of Chicago in the summer. While spending the weekend at Hollywood Beach (the city may have renamed it Kathy Osterman Beach, but while I loved Kathy and her big hats, Osterman just doesn’t have the élan of Hollywood) may be fine, there is also the chance that you might get an invite to head to a lake house or a waterfront resort. You might think, “All I really need is a T-shirt, sandals, and some shorts.” In reality, you’ll need a bit more than that, unless the two of you plan to spend the entire weekend having sex. In that case, head out with your toothbrush, a tube of lube and a pack of condoms and send Auntie Anita some pictures. For a more varied weekend, you will need at least a few changes of clothes that can take you from the pool or beach to dinner and clubbing. The secret is to keep it simple and smart. Choose clothes that can do double duty and pick a color scheme that you can mix and match as needed. Pack a casual and sturdy canvas bag, and load it up with the following >> 10 boi
• A pair of jeans-sure it may be warm enough for shorts, but remember mosquitoes come out at night seeking exposed flesh. • Two short sleeve v-neck t-shirts in complementing colors. • 1 short sleeve casual shirt-perhaps a vintage Hawaiian or a polo. • 2 pairs of tailored shorts, preferably a pair of khaki and a pair of linen • Two pair of quick drying swim suits. A hoodie that you can use as a cover up, or if it gets cooler at night. • A windbreaker, good for cooler evenings or in case of a little rain. • A pair of deck shoes and a pair of sandals. Of course, no socks worn with either. • A pair of flip flops-to be worn only pool side or in a public shower. • 1 long sleeve dress shirt and a summer weight blazer-just in case you go somewhere a little fancier • Accessories-a pair of sunglasses (aviators are always in style) and a casual belt. • Your dop kit, of course. Packed with your medications, aspirin (great when sunburned), oral hygiene products, condoms and lube. As for hair products, go as easy as you can; a comb or brush, shampoo and conditioner (all that chlorine and sun will turn your tresses to straw). • Don’t forget sun block. I always carry a bottle of my favorite lotion and Neutrogena’s oil free mini roll-on sun block for touch ups and on my face. That’s it, all you need to add is a nice summer beach read (I suggest “Show Biz Kids” by our editor Rick Karlin, it’s campy and the short chapters are the perfect length between dips in the pool.)

What if your little getaway includes a trip to Provincetown for Carnival? Well, in that case, you’re entitled to another bag filled with all the things you’ll need to join in the fun. This year’s theme is “Can’t Stop the Music.”
If you are so inclined, Carnival is a drag queen’s dream come true. So haul out your ‘70s drag and get busy packing that bag. Here’s what you’ll need in addition to your tits, hair and make-up: A flirty little dress-this is not the time to wear an evening gown. The parade takes place in the middle of the afternoon, in full sun along commercial street, so skip the velvet and go for a breathable lightweight material. A big purse-you’ll want to carry your ID and money, room key, a change of shoes, a bottle of water, touch up make-up and, possibly, a sandwich (it is one long-ass fucking parade) A shape flattering bathing suit, just in case you get carried away at The Boatslip. A 2nd fabulous outfit for the Drag Queen Brunch the morning after the parade. A comfy caftan for Drag Queen Bingo. A stunning pair of shoes and a comfortable pair of shoes. Speaking of which, you might want to check out the article on Le Dame footwear next door. >>
There Is Nothing Like La Dame ! . . . Where Style and Fit Matters
Now, if you’re looking for some killer shoes to go with the outfit, check out the web site for Le Dame footwear, www.ledame. com. Le Dame owner Bernie J. Fatla knows how to treat a queen and specializes in high style women’s shoes in larger sizes. The web site also has a handy chart for converting men’s sizes to women’s. According to Fatla, “I think that everyone wants to be sexy and likes to feel that they’re sexy, whether it’s shoes or not. Who doesn’t want to feel good?” For the Carnival parade you might want to consider the Misty, a sassy, sexy dress sandal has an elastic back strap to fit snuggly on your heel with a three-inch heel. For something a little kinkier, The Dominatrix is a strappy sandal with silver metal studs and a four-inch reinforced heel in soft black nappa. Or perhaps you like it hot, then check out the Marilyn, a peep toe sling-back with a sleek platform and a three-inch heel. After all that walking, you’ll want to give your tootsies a rest (no matter how comfortable Le Dame’s shoes, hiking three miles on cobblestones is hell). This is where you take the comfy shoes out of your big purse. Le Dame’s Nina is a classic ballet flat available in iridescent bronze and soft red nappa. The company’s full line retails between $80 and $140. boi 13

Hi, my name is Trevor. I’m 25, 5’9”, 165 lbs. and I live in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I also grew up in Lake Geneva, it’s pretty laid back, but there are a lot of outdoor activities, especially in the summer. I love the outdoors, enjoy chilling on the beach, swimming, and waterskiing It’s really nice to hang out on the boat with some buddies, especially late at night, drinking a few beers and going skinny dipping. My other interests are fishing, sky diving and snow-boarding. I’m a fun loving person, I love to laugh and make the best of every situation. I’m avid at most things I do. When I go, I go all out! I love having fun and doing extreme things. I love all types of music, and will tolerate mostly anything, except the blues. I come to Chicago every chance I get. The city is great and has so much to offer. I think people that live in major cities take for granted sometimes what they really have. To be able to do whatever you want 24 hours a day, in my opinion is a great benefit! Imagine living in a place where the whole town rolls up at 8pm! After hours for us is going to an all night diner (which closes at 11pm on the weekends). On the serious side, I’m attending George Williams College, to earn my undergraduate degree in Parks
and Recreation, in hopes to work for a park district or for a private recreation business. The college is in my hometown, but to give you an idea of where it’s at, it’s only two hours from downtown Chicago and about one hour from Milwaukee. I am currently at a high point in my life where I have no worries, no cares, and am totally satisfied with where I’m heading, and who I am! Right now I’m between relationships, and at this point in my life I think that’s for the best. Throughout high school I dated the same girl for four years. My freshman year we broke up and I kind of fell hard for someone else. I was as surprised as anyone that it turned out to be.. well, let’s just say it was someone I used to go fishing with. He is a great person and taught me a lot about myself. Although we aren’t romantically involved anymore, we’re still good friends (with benefits). I don’t know what my next relationship is going to be like, but I’m open to suggestions! I love reading BOI Magazine. I read it online, since there are no bars in my hometown to pick it up. I guess that is another perk of living in a big city! boi 21
Screen Savor by Gregg Shapiro IN THEATERS
“Arthur” Whether or not it was intentional, when it was released 30 years ago, the original Dudley Moore version of “Arthur” had a builtin gay factor. Not only did it star Liza Minnelli, but it also earned out actor John Gielgud an Academy Award. There’s not much especially gay about the remake of “Arthur,” unless you are aroused by seeing Russell Brand parading around in colorful briefs or other various states of undress. Retaining some of the elements from the original story of the filthy rich, alcoholic, man-child’s quest to hang on to his nearly billion dollar inheritance by marrying the toxic Susan (Jennifer Garner) instead of the church-mouse-poor Naomi (Mumblecore diva Greta Gerwig), “Arthur” gets a 21st century tweaking, including the replacement of his butler (originally portrayed by the late Gielgud) with sassy nanny Hobson (Helen Mirren). But among the film’s many problems (including the cavalier handling of substance abuse issues) is that for a comedy, it’s not as funny as it should be. Brand, whose background is in stand-up comedy, delivers his lines like a comedian, not an actor. Interestingly, the movie’s most genuinely funny moment, when Arthur improvises song lyrics at Susan’s bridal shower, actually benefits from Brand’s comedic timing. And when “Arthur,” the movie and the character, get serious, fortunately Mirren is this there to provide the necessary dramatic touches. Although the laughs are less than plentiful, it not as dismal as it could have been. At least the “Arthur” remake/update doesn’t have a Christopher Cross theme song. 22 boi
Don’t expect to come away from “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” with a deeper meaning of life, yours or Uncle Boonmee’s. Leisurely paced, at the very least, gay Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul received the Palme d’Or at Cannes for this film in which the dying Uncle Boonmee (Thanapat Saisaymar), entertains both the living and dead, who help him through the transition from this world into the next. Released from the hospital under the watchful eye of Laotian caregiver Jaai (Samud Kugasang), tamarind and bee farmer Boonmee is visited in his country home by sister-in-law Jen (Jenjira Pongpas) and nephew Tong (Sakda Kaewbuadee). Before you know it, they are joined at the dinner table by the ghost of Boonmee’s wife and Jen’s sister Huay (Natthakarn Aphaiwonk), as well as the Monkey Ghost of his son Boonsong, with the glowing red eyes. In his final days, Boonmee comes to terms with the wrongs of his past, ranging from abandoning the search for Boonsong when he went missing to killing too many bugs and communists in his lifetime. In other words, karma is a bitch and Boonmee, who considers his kidney failure to be proof, has accepted that fact. But he makes the most of the end, communing with his hired help in the fields and trekking into the woods and through a cave. This is where past life memories and mythology intersect, and where less patient viewers might give up the ghost. But for those willing to go with the flow, “Uncle Boonmee” can be visually dazzling (in the ugly princess and talking catfish sequence, for instance), if ultimately puzzling.

Not A Ten
I’m a soon-to-be 35 year-old. I’ve got a great group of friends, a job I love and a supportive family. About the only thing I’m missing is a boyfriend. I am constantly meeting folks who tell me that they can’t understand why I’m still single, that I would make some guy a wonderful husband. I think so, too. So why am I still alone? I’m in pretty good shape physically, fairly intelligent, am well groomed and dress fairly well. However, I’m not very good looking. Not much I can do about that. On a good day, I’m a 5, maybe even a 6 in a dark bar. I don’t have a problem with the way I look, it’s nothing I can (or want to) change anyway. Is our community really that shallow?
NAT
Yes. However, the problem might be where you’re looking for love. If you’re looking in the bars and clubs, that’s probably not the best option. I love hanging out in clubs, but let’s face it, it’s all about the wrapping; not what’s inside the package. You don’t mention where you’ve met your great circle of friends, if it was at the bars, try expanding your “hunting area.” Volunteer for an agency or charity and you may find people who will actually take the time to know you.
Working Stiff
My boss is crazy. He rants and screams at people in our office. He throws things at people and belittles everyone. If the job market were better, I consider quitting, except for two things; the money is crazy good and my boss is really hot. I know he’s nuts, but I can’t help it. He has an amazing body and a huge cock (we work out at the same gym and I saw him in the shower once). As far as I know he’s straight, so I don’t even know why I have this strange attraction to him.

And you think your boss is crazy? Seriously, you need to get outside help and examine why you are attracted to someone who you see as unstable. I would guess, judging from your description, that he’s a bully who would 26 boi
use knowledge of your crush against you and would belittle you in front of your co-workers. Keep in mind, scenarios like those in the movie “9 to 5” are pure fiction. Nothing you do will ever change this man and I doubt he’s going to be sent to oversee the Bolivian office.
Identity Crisis
My partner and I have been together about eight years. We met at the Michigan Women’s Music Festival and clicked immediately, I’m a sucker for butchy dykes. About two years ago, she decided to have a double mastectomy because her large breasts were painful. I understood that and stood by her. She decided the transition from F/M a year and half ago. She’s due to have the surgery by the end of the year. I’m happy for her, but it’s messing with my head. Will I still be a lesbian after she transitions? So much of who I am is tied up in my lesbian identity. I don’t want to burden her with my fears and make her doubt her decision, but I don’t know what to do.
IC
Did you fall in love with the person or her vagina? Many couples have dealt with this same issue, some successfully continuing their relationship, some not yet remaining friends and some have gone their separate ways. I’m certain that your partner is getting counseling to aid in her transition to him, you need to get counseling, too. Your partner’s therapist should be able to recommend someone. This is an extremely emotional issue, especially since you have such a strong lesbian identity. There’s no right or wrong way to handle this, only the way that you feel in your heart. It may be an uncomfortable and trying road; you’ll need someone to help both of you through this. Ace Magyar has a BA in communications, a MA in sex therapy and a PHD in zoology. He is a registered couple’s counselor specializing in the GLBT community. Send your questions to AskAce@boimagazine.com.
