IML 34 GREETINGS Welcome to Chicago, in the heartland of America, and welcome to the 34th annual International Mr. Leather competition. For over three decades the men and women of the fetish communities have gathered here to watch as we choose a single titleholder to represent us. From around the world and certainly across this continent, tens of thousands have participated in this celebration of the lifestyle. Just as you do, they, more than anyone or anything else, have kept the event growing and the tradition strong. Today International Mr. Leather is recognized as an institution in the fetish world. I think it fair to say that you, by your continued support, have made this possible. Thank you! This weekend we gather again, some for the first time, some for what has become its own annual ritual. And while we’re here to select a titleholder, we gather for the celebration as much as the tradition. Much like the old motorcycle clubs that came before and in some respects spawned this event, we gather for the camaraderie and fellowship. We gather for the parties, for the sex and for the spectacle. Perhaps most importantly, we gather because here - together - we feel comfortable in our own skin. Many years ago it was difficult to book an IML host hotel or contest venue because they didn’t want us. Today we find hotels and venues difficult to book because we’ve grown so large and hard to contain. The Hyatt wants and appreciates you. Today, even the City of Chicago wants and welcomes you. We hope you’ll enjoy the Hyatt this weekend. We also hope you’ll hop on a shuttle bus or take a taxi and explore the rest of our great gay community. The bars and restaurants beyond the hotel beckon. Indeed, you’ll find they’re ready and waiting for you to arrive. To that end, wear your leather and wear your gear and let those you encounter know you’re here as a part of International Mr. Leather, the oldest and largest fetish gathering in the world. Be careful, it’s still a big city. Play hard, play safe and bring the experience of this weekend home when you leave. Thank you for coming ... Enjoy! Chuck Renslow, Founder and Executive Producer 12 boi

IML CONTEST EMCEES Karen Ultra The illegitimate love child of Oscar Wilde and Dorothy Parker, Karen Ultra is no stranger to the competition stage. She’s gone from being first runner-up in Ms. World Leather 2004 to being the Master of Ceremonies for American Brotherhood Weekend, International Master/Slave 2012, Great Plains Olympus 2010 and International Mr. Leather 2010 to name a few. Her customary sharp, glittering wit and attire secured her an invitation back to the IML stage in 2012. Recently freed of a great deal of baggage, she’s currently holding auditions to find someone to carry her luggage. She is a founding member of NLA-I Philadelphia, an Associate Member of The Men of Onyx as well as a member of Mama’s Family and the “MiddleAged Guard (thanks to Laura Antoniou). She was honored to be a part of the illustrious contestant wrangler crew at IML. She was also Judge’s Coordinator and Tally Master. She has two glass rocks (Pantheon Awards). She has judged at Great Plains Olympus, Mr. Cleveland Leather, OLA, and SouthEast Leatherfest, ICBB 06, Southwest Bootblack 07 and Mr. Missouri Leather 07. She was head Judge for Mr. Midwest Leather 2010 and judged MLT in Toronto. Actually, she’s judgmental all the time… She heads a Leather Family founded on the traditions of honor and service; responsibility and duty.

John Pendal In May 2003 John Pendal became the 25th person (and first ever Brit) to win the title International Mr. Leather. He spent his title year traveling full-time to leather events in 28 cities across America, Europe and Canada. He also raffled the Harley Davidson motorbike that was part of his prize, raising $22,000, which was split equally between the Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago and the Spanner Trust in the UK. After stepping down as IML he became a trustee of the Spanner Trust from 2004 to 2008, including a year as its chairman. The Spanner Trust is lobbying to change archaic laws in the UK and make consensual SM legal, even when an injury occurs. It also serves to assist to those Brits whose BDSM activities have landed them in legal hot water. In February 2004 John was honored to receive two Pantheon of Leather awards. In April 2007 he delivered the closing keynote speech at the Leather Leadership Conference in Minneapolis. He has hosted many leather contests, including Mr. San Francisco Leather, Mr. Belfast Leather, Mr. Palm Springs Leather, Mr. Midwest Leather, Tulsa Mr. Leather, Mr. Leatherman Toronto, Mr. Hoist in London (on four occasions), and Mr. Chicago Leather (every year since 2004). He has also presented SM workshops at Minnesota Leather Pride, Kinkfest in London, Palm Springs Leather Pride, Leather Camp in Wichita, Spring in the South, Tribal Fire, Inferno, SINSations in Leather, and Thunder in the Mountains. John has been working as a comedian professionally since September 2010. He lives in London where he doesn’t get to the gym nearly as often as he’d like. You’re welcome to follow him on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, but for IML related information go to www.iml2003.com. 24 boi

his leather journey back in 2001 when he started the LA boys of Leather and won the title of South California Drummer boy. He is a bartender at Spurline Video Lounge and a personal trainer at World Gym, Palm Springs. He plays softball for the World Gym Gorillas in the Palm Springs Gay Softball League and recently performed at the Palm Canyon Theater’s production of Pirates of Penzance. He’s had a daddy and a boy; now he’s just looking for a partner who can keep up with him. Stephen is honored to be a judge for IML.

Brian Conway Now 43 years old, Brian

has been involved in the BDSM lifestyle for the past 26 years. He is the co-owner/ producer of the Thunder in the Mountains leather event now in its 15th year in Denver and sole producer of the Rocky Mountain Leather SIR/boy and Community Bootblack contests also held in Denver on the same weekend in July. Brian has been a member of several local BDSM groups in Colorado, as well as a past member of the Chicago Hellfire Club, and is founder of the Colorado Rubbermen’s group. This year Brian took over leadership and production of the long-running Denver Gay Leathermen’s dinner, which brings together local gay leathermen for a formal dinner and good conversation. As an offshoot, he also created a similar community-wide dinner event for everyone of every sexual orientation as a means for all leather people to socialize and visit with each other in a non-sexual setting. Brian has been employed for many years as a database administrator for a large, nationally known communications company. He continues to reside in his home in Denver with his husband, Rich Dockter, and their three male sharpeis.

Jaak Evert Since 2004, Jaak has served

as president of LMC Estonia, a leather club which was created in 1992, just one year after the country gained its independence from the former Soviet Union. LMC Estonia was then the first leather club to be created in Eastern Europe. Before that, Jaak was a member of the board of his club and worked at the integration

of LMC Estonia into the European Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ECMC). Thanks to his work, LMC Estonia is now a full active member of the ECMC. He likes to remind his leather friends that the leather flag was greatly inspired by the Estonian national flag. In 2005, Jaak was a member of the jury of Mister Leather Europe together with Henri ten Have and Michael Egdes. Today Jaak is extremely proud to be the first Eastern European to have the privilege to judge a prestigious contest such as International Mr. Leather and to fulfill his duty in the name of the ECMC and LMC Estonia. Jaak was born in 1962 in Estonia and has a Master’s Degree in business management.

Eric Guttierez Born in France to a Spanish

family, Eric is an excellent representative of today’s diverse and unified European community. Eric’s parents are motorcyclists, thus he learned about leather at a very young age. In 2010 he was selected Mr. Leather Paris, then Mr. Leather France. Eric, representing France (and its Club l’ASMF) at the ECMC (European Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs), won the Mr. Europe Leather title in October of 2010. Eric continued his adventure in Chicago in May of 2011 becoming the 33rd International Mr. Leather. Eric travels extensively judging many European leather contests (Mr. Leather France, Mr. Leather Belgium and German Mr. Leather, and Mr Leather Europe, among others). Eric’s goal for his title year was to demonstrate the diversity of the Leather Community and to be a living example of its openness, inclusiveness and tolerance.

California, Dave has called New York City home since 2003. In 2005, he became the founding President of New York boys of Leather, of which he is now an associate member. Through his involvement with NYboL, he has also served on the boards of Leather Pride Night and Folsom Street East. No stranger to fetish contests, he served as Mr. East Coast Rubber 2005 and as Mr. Full Rubber (Berlin) in 2006. A writer, he has published pieces relating to sexuality and the leather lifestyle in “Instigator” and “Time Out New York”. Hughes is the vp of marketing & public relations for Nasty Pig, Incorporated. boi 27

IML JUDGES Steve Ranger Born in Kansas into a

military family, Steve grew up moving from base to base across the United States and Europe. This gave him an appreciation of different cultures and points of view, and ensured that he’d always be comfortable around men in uniform. Steve’s leather journey began in earnest nearly 20 years ago when his partner, Dan Patton, took him to the DC Eagle and unwittingly woke the inner beast that would rise up a decade later. In 2004 Steve won the Mr. Double L Leather contest in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, which fed into the Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather (MAL) contest. Steve became Mr. MAL 2005, and finished in the top 10 at IML that year. During his year as Mr. MAL, Steve bonded with the members of the Centaur Motorcycle Club and was surprised and honored to be invited to join the Centaurs as a full member. Steve was elected to the Centaur MC executive board as corresponding secretary. He then served as treasurer and vice president and chaired the Mr. MAL contest for five years, before being elected president in January 2011. A firm believer that we must understand our Leather history in order to continue growing as a community, Steve urges you to join him as a supporter of the Leather Archives & Museum. When not riding his motorcycle, Steve enjoys DC’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, where he and Dan have made a home for 19 years and were legally married in 2010.

Dave Watt Dave began to explore his

sexual interests after hitting 40 and is eternally grateful to the leather community for guiding his way into a world of selfexploration, heightened spirituality and kink. His husband Ken shares his passion for the leather community and reducing the stigma of HIV. In September 2008, he was honored with the title of Mr. Michigan Leather 2009, traveled extensively and had an amazing experience with his class at IML XXXI. Dave has a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and is a Michigan state certified HIV tester/ counselor. He currently works in HIV prevention and is the creator of “Mr Friendly,” a symbol to raise HIV awareness and fight stigma. “Mr Friendly” has been to over a hundred leather and bear events, reducing the stigma of HIV one conversation at a time. Dave serves on the CLAW board of directors and co-founded the 12 Step Leather Club for all leather-folk in recovery. Also known as “Mama’s Nutty Buddy,” he has completed many food fetish presentations, countless HIV classes and enjoys flogging “newbies” at leather events while flagging donut holes on his left. 28 boi

IML LEATHER MARKET

The Leather Market is without a doubt the most popular feature of the weekend, serving as the social and commercial center of IML. A great introduction for first-time IML attendees and curiosity seekers, it never fails to entertain grizzled veterans. More than 100 leather-related business eagerly tempt attendees with the latest products, presented in a range of impressive displays. You name it and you can probably find it at the Leather Market: clothing, footwear and accessories, dungeon equipment, gadgets and toys, niche magazines, DVDs, CDs, and, of course, plenty of condoms and lube. Leather Market vendors cover most every fetish element of the scene and boldly wear or demonstrate the products that they are selling.

Attendees often don leather and fetish gear as they browse and shop. It is not uncommon to pass by guys demonstrating how restraint tables work or testing out certain paddles and whips on eager participants. Competitors for the International Mr. Bootblack competition have chairs set up in the Leather Market and provide a firm and thorough boot polishing to all who require such services. Hosted at the Hyatt Regency Chicago (Lower Level) located at 151 East Wacker Drive, the Leather Market runs Memorial Day weekend from Friday May 25 through Monday May 28, 2012. It is open to the public and requires a day pass to enter. There is a $5 suggested daily donation or a $10 all-weekend access pass, with all net proceeds benefiting the Leather Archives and Museum. Friday, May 25 - Market open 12pm to 7pm Saturday, May 26 - Market open 11am to 7pm Sunday, May 27 - Market open 11am to 5pm Monday, May 28 - Market open 11am to 4pm

IML 2011 FAREWELL

Eric Guttierez

Honestly, in May 2011, I didn’t expect to become your 33rd IML. You can imagine the pleasure, the honor and the enjoyment that it was for me, as well as for a whole continent, Europe, which waited for this title for a long time! For me, the names of the past IML winners were legendary and admired characters in my leather fantasies. Suddenly, my name has been added to this prestigious list. It is an honor I will always cherish and I know is an important responsibility in a Leatherman’s life. I would like to thank last year’s judges who took the risk of trusting me with this responsibility. Thanks to Chuck Renslow and the IML executive staff who have so warmly welcomed me into the Family, I will always be grateful to them for that. In this important moment of my life, I would like to take a moment to remember RJ Chaffin who passed away so soon after IML ended last year. He guided the team responsible for IML over the years. My thoughts go to his entire family and to all who knew him. During this past year, I participated in many important events. I visited many clubs and communities on both sides of the Atlantic and met so many members of active and impressive clubs. The experience leaves me filled with gratitude and joy at having experienced this amazing journey with so many of you. To thank or acknowledge everyone I’ve gotten to know this past year would fill this entire book and would be an impossible task. But please know that my thanks to all I encountered this year are most genuine and sincere. That said, I would like to thank Douglas ‘Dee’ Pamplin and Anthony Rollar, my fellow IML 33 finalists for their outstanding year and their valued friendship. I also want to recognize Sarah Vibes, International Ms. Leather 2011 and Jim Deuder, International Mr. Bootblack 2011, with whom I was lucky to spend this formidable year. I hope to have been useful this year and I will keep the memory of each of you. Thanks to all those who welcomed me, hosted me, transported and brought to life the most beautiful adventure I have ever had. I wish the same happiness to my successor. In leather brotherhood, Eric, International Mr. Leather 2011 46 boi

IML BOOTBLACK FAREWELL Jim Deuder There was once a time when I had absolutely no intention of running for the title of International Mr. Bootblack. Yet here I am today feeling that bittersweet joy as I wrap up one amazing title year. My motivation to compete did not lie in the fame, glory or notoriety. I wanted to pay tribute to the people who taught me, inspired me and awakened my passion for bootblacking. I wanted to perpetuate and pass down the traditions, skills and heart of bootblacking. Using the title, to teach, share and inspire has allowed me to do just that. I’ve had the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion everywhere. I’ve met with small local groups that had just a handful of attendees and I’ve presented at events with over a thousand! In this, I’ve learned that the numbers really mean nothing, but to see that bootblack spark in just one person is priceless. If there were one message I’d want to get across to those who will be competing this year, as well as those on the receiving side, it would be to embrace your passion. In everything that you do and everything you experience, allow your passion to flourish. Put aside your fears and self doubt and just be who you are. Special thanks to Master Blair for first introducing me to bootblacking and to David Hawks for inspiring me to embrace my passion. Thanks to all those who have taught me along my journey. Thanks to every event, organization and community that invited me to share my passion with them. Thanks to those who supported me, put me up, fed me, drove me and made me feel welcome in foreign lands. Thanks to my sponsors, The Eagle NYC, The Leatherman NYC and Purple Passion. Thanks to IML 2011, Eric Guttierez, for being a true companion, making many trips across the pond to rabble-rouse with me. In addition, thanks to KD, the best sash wife I could have ever asked for. With love and gratitude, Jim Deuder International Mr. Bootblack 2011 54 boi

The singer/comedienne’s regional credits include Amanda McBroom’s “Heartbeats” at the Pasadena Playhouse, and an award winning Dolly in “Hello, Dolly” at the Peninsula Civic Light Opera (a role she repeated in her hometown, Modesto).
