VENDORS Follow the Money Why should I give $10 at the gate? Midsommarfest is the primary fundraiser for the non-profit Andersonville Chamber of Commerce (ACC). Your donation also supports the work of the Andersonville Development Corporation, which combined with the Chamber works to keep Andersonville a vibrant and sustainable community filled with strong independent businesses.

Where does my $10 go?

In addition to helping cover the enormous costs of putting on a large festival, pretty much everything else that you enjoy about Andersonville year ‘round – the events such as Arts Weekend and the Andersonville Farmers Market, the clean streets and sidewalks, the unique, local small businesses and the 50th anniversary celebration of Midsommarfest, which will take place June 12-14, 2015!. And with each $10 donation (while supplies last), you get a raffle ticket for a chance to win a $1000 travel voucher from Mena Tours & Travel, plus other great prizes from some of your favorite Andersonville businesses. This year, the ACC is pleased to donate a portion of all gate donations to the Swedish American Museum’s Water Tower Fund, which is working to restore or replace the iconic water tower that was removed in March 2014.

What about the beer?

Every beer that you purchase at the Midsommarfest beer booths at Berwyn, Catalpa and Balmoral directly supports ACC and a portion of the proceeds benefit four great community non-profit organizations, which provide the volunteers for the weekend! For more information, and to drop off your raffle ticket, you can visit the ACC booth at Clark & Berwyn during the fest.

ANDERSONVILLE

ECO-NOMICS Keep By Rick Karlin Andersonville Green Eco-Andersonville promotes and encourages social, environmental and economic sustainability to enhance the unique urban character and local commercial vitality of Andersonville. The Andersonville Green Building Incentive Program provides business and commercial property owners with financial assistance towards improvements in their commercial spaces and operations that will have a positive and measurable environmental impact. Rebates are available for up to 75% of costs on approved green building project.

With the intent of honing the certification to its most impactful requirements, eco-Andersonville has launched a merit badge program. The merit badge program recognizes businesses for achievement in one of five different categories: water conservation, energy conservation, waste reduction, sustainable transportation, and local ownership. Look for merit badges in the window or behind the counter of participating businesses. Another way eco-Andersonville works to better the neighborhood is by the creation of “People Spots”; small parks with greenery and seating in repurposed parking spaces made from recycled products. The spaces have been created with private funds and the cooperation of a number of design and recycling concerns as well as Gethsemane garden center, Patch landscaping and the Chicago Dept. of Transportation. Andersonville residents participate in the eco-Andersonville project through Chicago’s first community compost collection program. Each week participants receive a fresh six-gallon bucket with a snap-on lid for the purpose of collecting their food scraps. On a weekly basis crew members from The Urban Canopy come through the neighborhood and swap out each bucket and take the contents to be composted at several different urban agriculture sites in Chicago.

Chicago's

in the know ... ON THE GO!

By Sue Deaunym

Bar Biz

I am obsessed with Tringo at SoFo on Tuesdays. It’s part trivia, part bingo and all fun…I’m lovin’ the fact that Friday cocktail hour show tunes at Sidetrack now start at five. That means I can get in at least two more martinis, sing out loud and still have a late supper before crashing… Close out May on Saturday with boyz, boyz, boyz, and some Hoz. There’s the Mr. Club Krave 2014 pageant and ProgressBar has go-go boyz with DJ Jesse Hoz... Hydrate goes Throwback on Saturday July 26 with another “Manhole” event, featuring DJ Michael Serafini and an opening set by Matt Harvat… If you’re itching for a little manliness after Midsommarfest, Touche reminds you that they’ve got M.A.F.I.A. on Friday, Saturday is Bear Night and Sunday’s the weekly beer blast… Replay hosts the American Veterans for Equal Rights Flag Day beer bust &bbq on Saturday, June 14. A $10 donation covers beer and food… Friday, June 6 is First Friday for Equality Illinois. A $10 donation at the door gets you two drink tickets and a ticket to be entered in drawing for a door prize. At Sidetrack, natch… DS Tequila Company is combining fun movies with $5 burgers (just a buck each for add-ons), on Tuesdays. To add to the fun, it’s just $3 for Jamesons and Slammer shots.

Music Makers

Mary's Attic hosts one of the Out at Wrigley National Anthem preliminaries on June 1. If you can’t make that one, you get another chance June 11 at Roscoe’s… The Edgewater Gay Cabaret benefit on June 6 and 7 at Epworth United Methodist Church (Berwyn and Kenmore) is a benefit for Cornerstone Men's Shelter. The performers include some of the city’s top singers, including; Jordan Phelps, Brandon Moorhead, Scott Gryder, Marc Embree, Kris Hyland, Jos Banks, Katrina Miller and Jerry Miller… Lakeside Pride Jazz Ensemble presents its annual Pride concert, “Rainbow Rhapsody” celebrating 15 years on June 10... Beginning Thursday, May 29 Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre presents an Andrews Sisters musical tribute at No Exit Café… CGMC has been “Bouncing Off The Walls” with its Broadway concert around the state. On May 31 they’ll be at The Harris Theater and the next day in Naperville… “Proud at Mary's” a cabaret night of Pride-based pop songs, show tunes, personal monologues, and stories will be held at Mary's Attic on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14... Chicago will be lesbian music central on Monday, June 16 when Melissa Etheridge performs with Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the next night Tegan and Sara perform with The Courtneys and My Midnight Heart at The Vic.

Funny Business

Theatre iO has begun QWEIRDO!, a showcase of Chicago's top gay comedians and improvisers every Sunday… The Women of GayCo perform some of their best-of-lady sketches on Friday, June 6, at Stage 773. Tix are $15. Ladies, putting Andy Eninger in a dress doesn’t count. But I’d pay to see that!... Just Dickin' Around is a women’s comedy showcase. It’s at Hydrate on the first and third Thursdays of the month, Parlour on the second Thursday and, at Halsted’s on the fourth Thursday, they invite the boys to play with them. In Other News

As part of its Pride Month programming, WTTW-11 is airing “Schoolboy to Showgirl - The Alexandra Billings Story” on Sunday, June 15. Alexandra, a member of the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, started working in Chicago bars as a go-go boy and became the nationally recognized drag performer Shante before transitioning. She is an educator, actress and activist… On Thursday, May 29 The Field Museum celebrates marriage equality in Illinois with an invitation-only cocktail party. This is your invite; RSVP at https://www.eventbrite. com/e/equality-at-the-fieldcelebration-tickets-11416243291... On Monday June 2, Michael Urie (“Ugly Betty”) stars in About Face Theatre’s staged reading “The Last Sunday in June” by Jonathan Tolins at The Greenhouse Theater Center.

Getting The Run Around

ProgressBar has teamed up with personal trainers from Phenomenal Fitness to create Phenomenal Progress Running Club, a running group that meets weekly at Progress Bar every Sunday starting at 11. Each week there’s check-in for belongings and a post-run champagne toast. For every Sunday attended, members get a raffle ticket to win either a two hour ProgressBar hosted party for 20 people or five one-hour semi-private personal training sessions. Raffle tickets will be drawn at the end of the eight weeks… That will get you all ready for the Pride 5K run on June 26.

Gone But Not Forgotten

On Saturday, May 31 there will be a celebration of the life of Tajma Hall at Center on Halsted. The popular performer died unexpectedly on April 19 from cardiac arrest… On Tuesday, June 3, Chicago will host a dance party and tribute to DJ and record producer Frankie Knuckles, "The Godfather of House Music" beginning at 6 p.m. at the Chase Central Promenade in Millennium Park.

This Issue’s Rants

Sunday, June 1 is the official start date for GLT marriages in Chicago. Note we said “GLT”, because if it’s a Bi marriage, it’s always been legal, so you don’t get to come to the party… #enuffalready Okay we get it, you use social media and you’re trendy, but adding hash-tags to non social media stuff is annoying! #workinmyllastnerve, #fuckinjuststop… Someone’s been listening to our rants, because we finally got some A-list talent for Pridefest. Jennifer Hudson performs at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Can't wait! boiMAG 39

C as t Away s By Gregg Shapiro

With the Tony Awards on the horizon we assess the current crop of cast album releases. "Fun Home", lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel’s universally lauded graphic novel, might not seem like the most ideal candidate for a stage musical. The autobiographical story of Bechdel’s coming out in college, her childhood growing up in her family’s funeral home, particularly her bisexual father Bruce who committed suicide. But leave it to Jeanine Tesori, who co-wrote new songs for the Broadway musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and collaborated with Tony Kushner on "Caroline, Or Change", to bring it to fruition, with book writer and lyricist Lisa Kron. Fun Home: Original Cast Recording features Tony-winning actor Michael Cerveris as Bruce, Tony-nominee Judy Kuhn as Alison’s mother Helen, and three actresses as the lead character; Sydney Lucas, Alexandra Socha and Beth Malone. To the credit of all involved, Fun Home maintains the humor and tragedy of the book, honoring the original material and potentially expanding the audience for both the book and the show. If you’ve ever seen singer/songwriter Jonatha Brooke in concert, you know that she has a theatrical streak. She is a gifted and natural storyteller, regaling audiences with the most marvelous stories. So it’s not the least bit surprising that she created and performs the musical stage play "My Mother Has Four Noses", currently running off-Broadway. The story of when “Alzheimer’s began claiming” her mother. The CD My Mother Has 4 Noses consists of 12 songs from the show, finds a place for itself between cast recording and pop album. Every song is a gem and a welcome addition to Brooke’s canon, especially “Are You Getting This Down?”, “What Was I Thinking?”, and “How Far You’d Go For Love”.

The 2010 all-star concept album studio recording of Here Lies Love, was a creative collaboration between David Byrne and Fatboy Slim. Reminiscent of the early prestage-production albums of musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, such as Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, it set the stage for what was to come next. In fact, of the aforementioned recordings, Here Lies Love has the most in common with Evita, as it is also the story of a female leader, Imelda Marcos, who went from beloved to despised during the course of her lifetime. The double disc cast recording of the Public Theater’ production includes Ruthie Ann Miles in the lead role. Those who heard the studio concept recording will recognize songs such as “American Troglodyte,” “Eleven Days,” the haunting “Order 1081,” and the buoyant title tune. The cast recording features seven new songs written just for the stage musical. In case you missed it the first time around (and who would admit to that?), the inexplicably popular musical version of "Les Miserables" returned to Broadway in March 2014. The double disc concert version of the 25thanniversary production (from 2010) is available on a live cast album. Les Miserables Live!, Dream the Dream, features John Owens-Jones as Jean Valjean, Earl Carpenter as Javert, Madalena Alberto as Fantine, Rosalind James as Eponine and Katie Hall as Cosette. Just in case you forgot, Les Miserables debuted during the reign of Reagan. If that isn’t a political statement, what is? If you believe, as the vaudeville strippers in "Gypsy" sang, that “You’ve got to get a gimmick”, then Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair’s two-person, multi-character musical "Murder For Two" is your cup of tainted tea. Murder For Two: Original Cast Recording stars Brett Ryback as career-minded cop Marcus summoned to the home of murdered writer Arthur to question his many guests (read: suspects), all portrayed by Jeff Blumenkrantz. This one grows old quickly. In other words, it’s “two” tiresome.

FIT TIPS By Michael Elder

Six PaCk Abs, What's The SeCret? It is a question that I have been asked relentlessly throughout my career: “Michael, how do I get a six pack? What’s the secret?” Well the answer is this: there is no secret! Achieving a tightly sculpted six pack takes serious work, both inside the gym as well as in the kitchen. Here are a few tips to help enlighten you. Perform full body strength training. You may be wondering what training the rest of the body has to do with training the abdomen. Muscles are the fat burning machines of the body. The more muscle tissue we have, the higher our fat burning capability will be. So performing strength training for the upper and lower body as well as the core will help you to burn abdominal fat, pending you are also following proper nutrition. Perform functional resistance training. Functional resistance training essentially means training movement patterns or performing exercises where your balance is challenged. Stability Ball, BOSU, and one legged exercises are good examples. This form of training requires muscle activation not only from the major muscles targeted but also from the core. Synergistic muscles in the core are challenged to keep balance and also to assist in certain movements. This helps to ensure that the entire core is being challenged which will help to bring about that nicely balanced and symmetrical look that we all want.

Perform a wide variety of core exercises for the abdominals, obliques, and lower back. I have found this idea to be key in achieving six pack abs. For the body to adapt and see change, your workout routine must be continually altered. Performing the same exercises over and over again will only lead to a training plateau. This is also true for the core. That being said, there are a few gold standard core exercises that I often like to return to on a regular basis. They include: captain’s chair crunches, bench curl- ups, front and side planks, torso rotations, the ab wheel, stability Ball crunches, lower back extensions on the Roman chair, and good old fashioned floor crunches. It is very important not to neglect the lower back. If it is not trained properly, it can result in a slumped posture which can therefore weaken the abdominals. Follow a proper diet. Of course, gaining a six pack will be impossible without employing proper nutrition. It doesn’t matter if you train until you are blue in the face; you must eat healthy to burn abdominal fat. Care must be taken to spread out your meals throughout the day, every three to four hours. Each should meal should contain a lean protein and a fibrous carbohydrate (mostly vegetables). Starchy carbohydrates must also be included in your daily diet, but some manipulation of these can help you to burn even more abdominal

fit tips continued fat. Notice I said manipulation, not elimination. This is a very specific process. If you want more details, please feel free to send me an email. I also highly recommend limiting your alcohol consumption and limiting your beverages to mainly water and occasional coffee. Cocktails and sugary drinks lead to excess sugar in the bloodstream which can therefore lead to fat gain. Perform low level post workout cardio. One tip that can greatly aid you in your quest for a six pack is to perform 20-30 minutes of low intensity cardio after each resistance workout. After your workout, your body will become depleted of glycogen (your body’s fuel source inside the muscle tissue). Therefore, when performing low

level cardio afterward, your body will now turn to body fat as a primary fuel source. Higher intensity cardio may run the risk of tapping into muscle tissue for fuel which is not the desired effect. Oh, and one more thing: get your Z’s! Seven to eight hours of sleep each night will ensure that you are getting adequate recovery from your workouts. Follow these tips and you will be on your way to developing that six pack. I won’t lie; its hard work. But everything comes with a price. Now hop to it!
