ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW A FILM BY: JIM SHARMAN STARRING: TIM CURRY, SUSAN SARANDON, RICHARD O’BRIEN, CHARLES GRAY, MEATLOAF, BARRY BOSTWICK by Stephanie Berlin
Happy Halloween 2016! It’s time to do the Time Warp again at the Music Box Theater! The film is screened with a cast of actors provided by Midnight Madness who ensure that what’s happening in the audience is just as entertaining as what is on screen. This notorious horror parody, a fast-paced potpourri of camp, sci-fi and rock ‘n’ roll, among other thing. Tracks the exploits of naïve couple Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) after they stumble upon the lair of transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). The film, a bizarre musical co-starring Meat Loaf and Richard O’Brien, bombed in its initial release but later gained a cult following at midnight showings. For 35 years, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has delighted audiences and terrified parents. The Music Box Theatre is the proud Chicago home of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Every screening has a shadowcast of the film (that’s actors acting in front of the screen during the film), and the Halloween screenings have in past years sold out.

THE MIDNIGHT MADNESS VIRGIN KIT The Midnight Madness Virgin Kit (or “prop bag”) contains all you need for a Rocky Horror showing. Midnight Madness sells participation kits at The Music Box for $3. The performers do not get paid for performing at any venue, and 100% of the proceeds from kit sales go back to cast costumes, props, promotions, etc. What’s in the bag? A Balloon, Glow Stick, Time Warp Flier, Rubber Glove, Noisemaker, Confetti Bag, Toilet Paper, Party Hat, Sponge, Paper Plates, Cards and Instructions. boiMAG 17
Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame To Induct
12 Individuals, Two Organizations and Two Friends of the Community Twelve individuals, two organizations, and two friends of the community have been selected for induction into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame, the organization which honors and celebrates notable members of Chicago’s LGBT communities. The Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremony will take place on Wednesday, November 9, from 5:30pm until 7:00pm at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., Chicago. The reception will begin at 5:30pm, with the program scheduled to follow at 6:00pm. The event is free and open to the public. The inductees were selected by a committee composed of current individual inductees who reviewed an array of nominations submitted by members of the public. The names were released by Friends of the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame, a nonprofit organization. “This year’s inductees, like our rosters since 1991, represent LGBT achievements in a variety of fields,” said Mary Morten and Gary G. Chichester, co-chairs of the Friends organization and longtime leaders in maintaining the Hall of Fame. “Each year, the Hall of Fame spotlights some of the many who have made contributions to their own communities and to the city as a whole.”

Did Svengoolie come from another planet or did you come from Earth? Even further away- from Berwyn! No, just kidding, I came from Transylvania, our old family home. Who do you get your distinguished looks from, your mother or father, and what did they look like? Well, if you were in Chicago in the early 70s, you might’ve seen my dad, the original Svengoolie, on WFLD- and I inherited many of his facial features, like the dark-circled eyes, and the moustache and goatee (didn’t know those could be inherited traits, did you?) he also had long hair like mine, but his was green- yes, GREEN! He looked like a hippie vampire. I think I inherited my coloring from my mom- who was a cross between Morticia Addams and Julie Newmar (no wonder dad was always so happy…)

How was Svengoolie as a child? (Did you go to school? Were the other children/teachers scared of you?) Well, to avoid sunlight, I had to attend night school- with other similar kids, like Harry Talbot, the Wolf Man’s son, and Frankenstein’s grand-daughter (boy was she built…literally). There was a high turn-over among the teaching staff- I think most of them got too tired from carrying around all those crosses, stakes, garlic, silver bullets, etc.
Does Svengoolie have brothers or sisters? No, I was an only child. In fact, originally I think my parents wanted to call me “Quits”- because when I was born, Dad looked at Mom and said “Let’s call it Quits”. Is there a Mrs. (or Mr.) Svengoolie? If not, are you looking for someone? (What does Svengoolie look for in a potential mate?) There is a Mrs. Svengoolie- you might say she’s a Sven-girlie. In looking for a mate, I wanted someone with a sense of humor (she’d HAVE to have one if she was going to be linked with me!) Does Svengoolie have any magical powers? Yes- I can put an audience to sleep with only about three jokes.
the Chicago Ghost Conference to the Chicago Street Theatre in Valparaiso, to Elgin’s “Nightmare on Chicago Street” and the Volo Auto Museum! We post all the appearances as they come up under the “appearances” tab at www. svengoolie.com.- we’ll update them as October rolls on. My favorite memory of Svengoolie is chickens being thrown at you. If you were given the opportunity to throw anything back at the chickenthrowers, what would you throw at them that would be the most fun? I’d throw chickens back at them, except it would be unthawed ones from the grocer’s freezer.
How did you, Svengoolie become so popular? I think a big part of it is the viewing audience’s desire to see the classic monster movies we bring them- and I think they like having me around for comic relief from the scares. I’m fortunate that they like what I’ve been doing and have stayed with me for all these years! When can we see Svengoolie on WCIU, The U? On WCIU, The U, it’s Saturday mornings at 11 am- but, now we’re on the MeTV network every Saturday night, at 9 pm central time, playing to a national audience- who have accepted us so warmly that most weeks, we’re actually trending on Twitter! Any live appearances coming up that we can see Svengoolie at? I’ve got a full docket of Halloween season appearances- everything from
Now a question for the man behind Svengoolie: If you can wave your magic wand and elevate Svengoolie to the next level, what ideas do you have for the future of the Svengoolie character? Well, playing this character for so long, and having national recognition- is already a dream come true (or is it a nightmare?) It’d be fun to eventually perhaps do a full length movie, or at least do cameos in movies and TV shows. Of course, I could always work in Vegas… (they DO need janitors there, right?) boiMAG 21
