WELCOME TO PRIDE FEST Notice something a little different? For the first time in its 11-year history, Pride Fest is being held the weekend BEFORE Chicago’s annual Pride Parade, which this takes place on Sunday, June 30. The reasons for the change are simple. One is that we’ve grown so big that we needed a full weekend for everything. That means two days of fabulous fun! Another reason is that, with June being Pride Month, we’re creating a “Pride Week” that bookends Pride Fest on one weekend, then culminates the following weekend (as well as Pride Month) with the Pride Parade. In addition to local music faves on the South Stage (at Addison), back again on the North Stage (near Grace) will be some of the biggest names in the worlds of pop, R&B and dance music. This year’s lineup includes Deborah Cox, Janice Robinson, Dev, Aubrey O’Day, Blue Cantrell, Ultra Nate, Xelle, Sandy B. and many more! Pride Fest is sponsored by the NortHalsted Business Alliance (NBA), and this guide is published by your friends at boiMAGazine. We’d like to ask that you give year-round support to friends of our community. This includes Pride Fest vendors, sponsors and guide advertisers as well as NBA’s member businesses. Finally, we’d like to thank you, for your gate donation. Not only does it help underwrite the entertainment and other activities at this great fest, but it also helps support the year-round efforts of the NortHalsted Business Alliance to continue to improve this wonderful community for residents and visitors alike. Have a fantastic time! boi

In 1980, a small group of retailers in a fourblock area along Halsted Street joined forces to promote the street and improve business conditions. Since its inception, the NBA has grown to represent more than 80 businesses along North Halsted Street, from Barry Street to West Irving Park Road. NBA is a major force in the community, championing positive change and growth. NBA’s street beautification program provides regular street and sidewalk cleaning, as well as the maintenance of the seasonal planters. A focal point for the GLBT community of Chicago, The Center on Halsted (on the corner of Halsted & Waveland) serves the community’s diverse social, recreational, cultural and social service needs. In addition, NBA regularly surveys area residents on our activities and programs to confirm that our efforts are benefiting and appreciated by our local community. NBA hosts two of the city’s most popular events, Pride Fest and Market Days which bring hundreds of thousands of people to the neighborhood as well the Halloween on Halsted Parade. In celebration of 30 years together, Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus will reconnect with alumni during the last two weekends in June (June 21-23 and June 30) at Pride Fest and at the Pride Parade. “I am very proud to be in the chorus for 30 years, to have been a part of something healthy, something that continues to attract new members and audiences,” stated Danny Kopelson, who has been with the chorus since its first show. WHY DO WE CELEBRATE PRIDE IN JUNE?
The modern day gay movement began on June 28, 1969 when patrons of a New York City gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village, fought back during a raid by police. At that time, gay bar raids were become common in cities throughout the country. That night, patrons of the Stonewall Inn battled the police. During the following days street demonstrations continued. During that week, gay liberation organizations were formed, thus giving birth to the modern day GLBT rights movement. In the four decades since Stonewall, the world has changed dramatically. The accomplishments, as well as some setbacks since that time would take volumes to list here. Currently, there are still many GLBT issues in the news, including same sex marriage and passing federal legislation forbidding discrimination. Although a lot has been accomplished during the past forty four years, there is still a long way to go. Every year, Pride is commemorated and celebrated around the world in many different ways. Events include parades, marches, workshops, street fests, athletic events, choral concerts, etc. Chicago commemorates and celebrates Pride with dozens of events during June, which is now commonly considered “Pride Month.” The celebration culminates with the annual pride parade, coordinated by the PRIDEChicago group, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people. This year, the 44th Annual Pride Parade is scheduled for Sunday, June 30, stepping off from the corner of Montrose and Broadway at noon. From there the parade 40 boi

An alternative theme is “Pride 365, ‘Have Pride Year ‘Round.” For more Chicago Pride Parade and June Pride Month Calendar listings that are updated daily, call 773.348.8243 or go to PRIDEChicago’s web site at www. THEATER SCENE
By the Book: an interview with The Book of Mormon’s Pierce Cassedy by Gregg Shapiro Out actor Pierce Cassedy radiates enthusiasm on stage and in person. The young man, who makes his national debut as Elder McKinley and Mormon prophet/angel Moroni in the sold-out Broadway in Chicago production of the Tony Award-winning musical “The Book of Mormon”, at the Bank of America Theater, is a born scene-stealer. Lanky, elastic and toothy, when Cassedy grins they can see it all way up in the second balcony. As one of the characters (the gay one!) singing the wicked funny Mormon suppression number “Turn It Off,” Cassedy instantly wins us over. It’s a credit to both his acting and his singing. And this is before we see him in the dance break! I spoke with Pierce in May 2013.
First of all, it’s such a blessing. It’s been a whirlwind because it all happened really quickly. I was in the middle of the children’s show tour, so going from that audience to these audiences has been quite an experience. It continues to be a fascinating study every night. You never know what you’re going to get on different nights. (I’m) so grateful for the opportunity. It kind of blows my mind. I never really dreamed I’d ever get to do anything like this, let alone when I’m so young. The time is now [laughs].
Were you a fan of either or both South Park and “Avenue Q” before being cast in “The Book of Mormon”?
I grew up watching South Park. When I saw it (“The Book of Mormon”) on Broadway, I was like I can’t believe this is for this audience. I still Pierce, when did you know that you haven’t seen “Avenue Q” to this day. I would wanted to be an actor? love to see it. I remember being in eighth I went to a private elementary school. Every year we had to put on a play and so I was kind grade and listening to the “Avenue Q” cast recording. (“Avenue Q” creator) Bobby Lopez. of the lead in all the plays. I got lots of praise That was one of the reasons why I fell in love for it. Later on, I started singing and found with how creative and how hilarious it was in a passion for that. In high school, I was like, dealing with these serious human emotions I think I really can do this forever if I really and topics. Super inspiring. I never dreamed try hard enough. So I decided to get myself that I would get to work with Bobby Lopez, or into dance classes, because I couldn’t dance Trey Parker and Matt Stone for that matter. [laughs].
You’d never know that after seeing your dance in “The Book Of Mormon”, but we’ll get to that later. I appreciate that.
Where did you study theater?
I studied theater at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. I graduated in spring 2012. It’s been a crazy, quick ride. How has the experience of being in “The Book of Mormon”. been for you so far? 46 boi
Does it feel like a big responsibility to be in one of the first touring companies of “The Book of Mormon”?
Yes! I mean, it’s super stressful [laughs]. But it’s more just awesome. I feel so lucky that I get to be the third person to ever get to do this role. I saw Rory (O’Malley) do it one time (in New York). But this is my creation, my baby. As an artist it’s so wonderful to do something new and something that hasn’t been done…no offense to “Oklahoma!” or anything like that. I loved playing Will Parker, but there’s been 100,000 Will Parkers. For this, I do what I do and that’s all I can do. I just did the best I can.
“The Book of Mormon” may possibly be the most irreverent musical to ever run on Broadway and go on a national tour. As Elder McKinley you perform in the “Turn It Off” number, a song that exemplifies the show’s shock value, message and humor. What are your thoughts about the song?
I think it’s hilarious. The first time I listened to it I thought, this is so perfect. I’ve only known one Mormon person my whole life. He was and continues to be one of the most gracious, kind, nicest people in the world. It’s funny to look on it and see why they are that way a little bit. They have this unique trick, as Matt and Trey say. As evidenced through my character, it’s not necessarily the most appropriate way to go about dealing with all of your problems. Your emotions can manifest themselves in other ways. That’s true. In spite of his efforts to “turn it off,” Elder McKinley is clearly the gay Mormon in the show. Did you have an easier time coming out than McKinley?
Yes, because I’m not Mormon [laughs]. I think that’s really the thing that (prevents him). He totally would. He’s super flamboyant, even more so than I am. Everybody goes through different things. I waited until the time was right and I had an army of people to support me. It was difficult, as everybody’s is, but I was able to get through with the support of my friends and family.
Would you say that being in the show has changed your opinion of door ringing missionaries, be they Mormon or Jehovah’s Witness? I can’t wait until that actually happens. It hasn’t happened yet because I live in an apartment building. If they made their way up there, I’d be like, “how’d you get past my doorman? [laughs].” That’s the real question. But, no, of course I have a newfound respect for their dedication to their beliefs. They really are so dedicated to believe these things that some people might portray as being a little bit farfetched.
boi 47
THEATER SCENE continued Earlier you mentioned dancing. “The Book of Mormon” is also an opportunity for you to show off your dance moves. I was learning the material and we were dancing more and more and more [laughs]. The dancing is great. I think it’s hilarious. While I was learning it I was cracking up.
It’s kind of like old Hollywood movie musical dancing.
Hokey, like musical theater. Cheesy smiles like I would do when I was 10 or 11. But we are grown men having to do it full out, full energy. It’s just silly. That’s Casey Nicholaw’s brilliance right there.
Obviously you picked it up just fine. Oh, sure. In college I really worked hard on dance. [Laughs] I got the rhythm in me, I guess.
48 boi
Are you someone who lives and breathes showtunes? Or is your personal playlist all over the place?
I don’t really listen to musical theater unless there is a new show or a show I’m auditioning for, something like that. I used to do that when I was younger, but now that I find that this is my life, in order for me to have a more full life I have to separate the two things, even though I find so much joy in my job. But it’s important to find joy other places, too. I love India.Arie. I listen to her all day. I like Sara Bareilles, Lauryn Hill. I like sultry songstresses.
Maybe Lauryn can get a copy of “The Book of Mormon” to listen to while she’s doing time in prison for tax evasion. God bless her! She can sing though it [laughs].

CHICAGO SPOTLIGHT Jim Flint When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? (I) came out at thirteen. When I brought it up to my mother, she said she knew something was different, so it was rather easy. She did not want me to tell my father because he would not understand. It was very easy in high school. I was a drum major already, so some suspected.
by Gregg Shapiro
Jim Flint owns The Baton Show lounge, among other businesses. He is also the founder and owner of the Miss Gay Continental Pageant. He was one of the founding members of the Windy City Athletic Association. In 1987, Flint ran for a seat on the Cook County Board of Commissioners. He has long been involved in Democratic Party politics, and is also a member of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, the IVI-IPO, Operation PUSH and many other community organizations. He was inducted into Chicago Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame in 1991. He helped organize the community forums that led, eventually, to the founding of Chicago House, and he produced its first major fund raiser in 1985. Through his monetary and in-kind donations, he continues to support a variety of charitable endeavors. 54 boi
Please name a few of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. Chuck Renslow, because of all the work (he does) helping others. So many in the gay community would not be here if it wasn’t for Chuck. Leonard Matlovich, the Air Force Sergeant that came out and faced a hard road to travel. The many sports stars that have come out. Diver Greg Louganis, Glen Burke (who played for the Dodgers and who started “High Five”) and, of course, Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova. Representatives Barney Frank and Gerry Studds, two congressmen who were out when they came to the U.S. House. What do you consider to be your most significant contributions to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? I helped start softball, baseball and bowling leagues in the community. Organizing and Co-chairing several marches on City Hall to stop police harassment, and being one of the first to run for public office as an openly gay candidate. I worked with Jerry Williams to get the Mayor to bring up the gay rights bill to the City Council to see which politicians were with us or against us. And last, but not least, I have owned The Baton for more than 44 years, as well as The Continental Pageantry System. These two businesses have paved the way for many female Impersonators and gay entertainers to excel on stage and even star in series featured on major networks.
