As you walk around this year’s Pride Fest, we encourage you to use the Guide and refer to it often. It contains information about the various Pride Fest Vendors, a map to help you navigate around the festival area, and details about the exciting entertainment that’s on tap. As Pride Fest is part of Chicago’s celebration of Pride, you will find plenty of information in the Guide about other Pride-related events in the city. The Pride Events calendar lists many political, social and cultural events that are occurring in and around the city during June and into July as well a details about the 44th Annual Chicago Pride Parade, Finally, as you read through the Pride Fest Guide, we hope you’ll take notice of the advertisers as well as the sponsors of Pride Fest and the businesses that make up Northalsted Business Alliance (NBA). Deborah Cox

Cox entered the music industry in the early 1990s, performing as a backup vocalist for Celine Dion for six months, before moving to Los Angeles in 1994. In 1995 Clive Davis signed Cox to Arista Records, and she released a single for the soundtrack to the 1997 movie Money Talks, titled “Things Just Ain’t The Same”, a dance mix of the song topped the U.S. dance charts. The first single from her second album One Wish, “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here”, spent fourteen weeks at #1 on the Hot R&B charts in the USA, as well as eight consecutive weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually went platinum. In 2004 she made her Broadway debut in the Elton John-Tim Rice musical Aida. In 2001, her hit song “Absolutely Not” was featured in Dr. Dolittle 2. In 2005, in the movie Blood of a Champion she played the role of Sharon, and again in 2005, her voice was featured in the movie Hotel Rwanda in the song “Nobody Cares”.

Inaya Day

You’ve heard her voice on the songs and her music fuels dance floors worldwide. She’s had numerous UK, Aria, and Billboard top tens and recently collaborated with Quentin Harris on a song called, “Do the Right Thing”, for his current album and with Ralf Gum for the soulful hit, “Lose My Worries” and recently, her single “Never Had Another Love” climbed the Aria club chart. In addition to house music, Inaya records and performs gospel, musical theater, jazz, hip-hop and R&B. She has collaborated with such luminaries as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Missy Elliot, Sean Combs, Big Daddy Cane and many others. A card-carrying member of the Actor’s Equity Association, groomed in church and musical theater (“The Wiz”, “Little Shop of Horrors”) has one of the most prolific writers and frequently heard voices on the world’s dance floors. 22 boi

Kim English

Through her career, Kim English has experienced success on dance charts in the U.S. and the U.K. Between 1999 and 2002 she scored six hits in a row that hit the top two, five of those went to number one: “Unspeakable Joy”, “Missing You”, “Bumpin’ and Jumpin’”, “Everyday” and “Treat Me Right”. All of these hit singles are featured on her debut album Higher Things. Both “Unspeakable Joy” and “Everyday” became her most successful radio hits. She earned three more number one hits in 2007 “It Makes a Difference”, “C’est La Vie” and “My Destiny”. All three hits are from her second album titled, My Destiny.

Mýa

Grammy Award winning Mýa entertained the world and impressed millions on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars and was named as one of Billboard’s Hot 100 Artists of the Decade and is a SAG Award–winning actress (for Chicago). Her repertoire includes the hits, “Case of the Ex,” “Ghetto Superstar,” “Free,” “Lady Marmalade” and “My Love Is Like...Wo”. She also recently partnered with the NOH8 campaign.

Ultra Naté

Twenty years after sashaying onto international dance floors with the club anthem, “It’s Over Now,” Ultra Naté has remained a musical chameleon, embracing a variety of sounds, from R&B/hip-hop, soul and disco to house, rock and electro-pop. Ultra Naté’s been busy in the studio with David Morales for his upcoming album and her eighth studio album Hero Worship. Naté is the singer of the song, but she is also a songwriter, producer, DJ, label owner (BluFire and Deep Sugar), club promoter and live performer. For the Baltimore-residing Naté, such diversity is a natural extension, or evolution, from one creative aspect of the music scene to another.

Her first single, the now-classic “It’s Over Now” paved the way for Naté’s debut album, “Blue Notes in the Basement,” which spawned such club hits as “Scandal,” “Is It Love?,” “Deeper Love” and “Rejoicing (I’ll Never Forget).” Four years later, in 1993, Naté delivered her sophomore album, “One Woman’s Insanity.” Dance music enthusiasts were pleasantly surprised by its R&B undertow, clearly evident on singles; “Joy,” “How Long,” and “Show Me,” her first #1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart. Naté had the biggest success of her career with the worldwide smash single, “Free” from her third album, “Situation: Critical,” which also included the hit singles “Found a Cure,” “Release the Pressure” and “New Kind of Medicine.

Crystal Waters

The daughter of famed jazz musician Junior Waters and her great niece of Ethel Waters, (one of the first African-American vocalists to appear in mainstream Hollywood musicals) began her music career as a behind-the-scenes worker, writing demos for a production team known as the Basement Boys. She secured a writing contract with Mercury Records in 1989 and began penning songs for recording artists. In one of her assignments Waters penned a song called “Gypsy Woman” for dance diva Ultra Nate and recorded a demo of the song. The producers were so taken by her rendition that they drew up a recording contract with her for that one song, never passing it on to Ultra Nate. The song became a worldwide hit, memorable for its “la da dee, la dee da” refrain and its often sampled keyboard riff. Her single, “100% Pure Love”, hit the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the longest charting singles on the Hot 100 at 45 weeks, long with the single, the singer released her second album Storyteller, which sold over 284,000 coppies in United States. Waters also participated in the AIDS-Benefit Album Red Hot + Rio produced by the Red Hot Organization, performing the song “The Boy From Ipanema”. Waters’ world tour featured sold out shows in

Russia, Egypt, the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico and Dubai, among other locations. In 2007 her track “Destination Calabria” hit the Top 10 on the UK Singles Chart followed a year later by the single, “Dancefloor”, another Top 10 Dance hit. “Never Enough” hit #20 on the US Dance Charts in 2009.

“Pride Around the World” By Richard Pfeiffer

This year’s international Pride Month theme is, “Pride Around the World.” While LGBT rights groups have existed for decades, the “modern day” gay movement is traced to June 28, 1969 when patrons of a New York City Greenwich Village gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, fought back during a raid by police. At that time, gay bar raids had become commonplace in cities throughout the country. That night, patrons of the bar battled police, and street demonstrations continued for several days. During that week, gay liberation organizations were formed thus, giving birth to the modern day LGBT rights movement. The Chicago 42nd Annual Pride Parade is scheduled for Sunday June 26 at 12 Noon stepping off from the Halsted/Belmont corner. It will then proceed north on Halsted to Broadway; then south on Broadway to Diversey; then east on Diversey to Cannon Drive in Lincoln Park. Each year, parade entrants, as well as groups sponsoring Pride Month events, have the option of using an international theme, or using a theme or slogan of their own choice. The Grand Marshal of this year’s Pride Parade is Fernanda Rocha, the newest cast member of the “Real Housewives of Orange County” on the Bravo network. This is the sixth season of the hit franchise and Fernanda is the first lesbian cast member. She is truly an American success story. She came to the U.S. from Brazil ten years ago where she was a fitness trainer with a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology. She worked hard, developed a clothing line, videos and co- owns her own exercise studio. Recently, she was involved in the NoHate8 campaign in California, and she will be taping a video for the “It Gets Better Project.” ( A more extensive biography for her is on our web site, ChicagoPridecalendar. org). She will be riding in a classic car near the front of the parade.

Every year, Pride is commemorated and celebrated around the world in many different ways. Events include parades, marches, street festivals, choral concerts, workshops, athletic events, etc. The bottom line is that these events bring together millions of people worldwide. Chicago commemorates and celebrates Pride with close to one hundred different events during June Pride Month. It culminates with the annual Parade, coordinated by the PRIDEChicago group, which draws up to 450,000 people. Capping off Parade day for the eighth year in a row, ABC 7 Chicago is planning to tape the parade for a one-hour recap to be aired on the night of the Parade, Sunday June 26. Check local television listings or ABC7Chicago.com for air time. Regardless of how an individual wants to commemorate and celebrate Pride, there is an event or function that can fit the needs of most people. For more Chicago Pride Parade and June Pride Month Calendar listings go to PRIDEChicago’s web site: ChicagoPrideCalendar.org or phone: 773-348-8243. boi 43

You Say You Want A Revolution

Everybody’s favorite MILF, Circuit Mom, and her production team brings a “Revolution” to Chicago’s nightlife scene with a titular circuitstyle mega dance party. Partnering with Stoli Vodka, House Of Blues, Live Nation and MasterBeat, Matt Harvat (aka Circuit Mom) is aiming to revitalize what was once the dance party destination in the Midwest by bringing the gay and straight communities together on the dance floor. Harvat most recently co-produced the extravagant Shedd Aquarium gala and was named “Chicago Night Hawk” by Out Magazine for his expertise producing and performing at the best events in the city. Things kick into high gear on the Friday of Gay Pride weekend at House of Blues featuring headliner Masterbeat DJ Brett Henrichsen with an opening set by DJ Cody Domino and a special return to the stage by Circuit Mom. Other upcoming events will feature full-throttle production numbers, killer visuals, hi-tech lighting, sound and décor and an amazing line-up of superstar DJs. We have it on good authority that will include the Chicago debut of UK’s hottest remix duo, Bimbo Jones. Tickets are on sale at CRAM, the House of Blues box office and houseofblues.com.

Before the Parade Passssessss By

Just like in exercise, you need to warm up before you party. In addition to Pride Fest, there will be plenty of opportunities…Let’s start with something nice and easy; the 20th Anniversary Pride and Joy reception on Monday the 20th at Circuit. The $20 ticket includes a massive hors d’oeuvres buffet and benefits the Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame…On Wednesday the 22nd enjoy a musical lunch hour at Macy’s on State with performances by Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus and notable cabaret duo, Beckie Menzie and Tom Michael. Follow that up at 5:30 with a men’s fashion presentation hosted by two-time Olympic figure skater and fashion icon on ice, Johnny Weir. complimentary hooch, raffles and nibbles on the 23rd from 8-11… If you’re one of those folks that wait until the last minute to plan things (you know who I’m talking about) Hydrate’s got the Locker Room Manhole event this weekend. …Now that we’re warmed up let’s head to the Pride home stretch.

On Friday,

Comedienne Bianca del Rio from Logo and MTV will crack you up at Spin. Make certain to stick around because the infamous Shower Party starts right afterwards. The next night Ongina and Jade will heat things up...Green Dolphin Street is hosting a mega-bash on Friday as well. The Pride event is called “Big Top” which should be especially festive in the city of big bottoms…Parlour’s got $3 Pinnacle Cake shots all weekend...Hydrate’s giving you the chance to see what the guys on the floats will be wearing with an underwear fashion show featuring Egoist…Touché’s Pride party will include drawings for the bar’s sexy T-shirts…Get your fur out of storage for the bear themed “Furr-nace” at Circuit. The highlight of which is a “furr-lesque” performance.

On Saturday

Start the day with the “Proud to Run” race. The only way I run is off at the mouth, but I might take part this year because they’ve got a fun and easy short walk. I think I can do that without spilling my cocktail… You might want to hit up some of our clothing advertisers; Moda just got in a shipment of sexy summer wear. Get something festive for the parade and see if you can match up to the model in the ad for Rufskin… Show it off at Hydrate’s Pride Bowl Awards party! 10% of the sales from 7:00p,-10:00pm will be donated to the CMSA! $5 Absolut cocktails and $4 Coronas…The western ‘burbs will be hopping as they hold the 25th Annual Miss Gay Joliet pageant at Maneuvers and in Lyons they’ll crown Miss Stonewall Inn at that bar (you can bet the Hit or Miss in Oakbrook will be hopping that day!)… Parlour’s boasting a special pre-Pride dance party on Saturday… If you’ve got a thing for Greek gods, head over to LaSalle St. for “Taste of Greece”… Urbano’s goin’ all blatino for its Pride party at Circuit… Touché throws an all-fetishes Pride party. Celebrate your own freakiness and

they’ll be giving out fetish hankies and sex toys. There’s also a bubble-wrap bondage demo at midnight…Wrap up the evening on the Spirit of Chicago moonlight Pride cruise with Miss Foozie the sails at 10 and returns with the sun.

flag poles, but honey you put it in the wrong place (Antarctica). Hell, who am I to dish, I’ve put my pole in the wrong place a few times too.

Don’t Rain On My Parade

Don’t get in a post-Pride funk, we have a number of upcoming events to keep up looking ahead… There’s Boom Boom Room every Monday at Ohm/Red Dog...Get a quick infusion of fun at Scarlet’s 1st Ward Ball, held every Friday with drink specials… Out at Wrigley on July 17 when the Cubs face off against the Marlins…Frankie Knuckles spinning at Circuit on July 2 with a special guest appearance by Jamie Principle (“I’ll Take You There”)… The Ram’s “Big Dick” contest in July (exact date TBA)... Halsted Tastes Better on 7/11… Get a booster shot of Pride with the Black Pride kicking off on June 30 and the Epic Black Pride party at Krush on July 1…And of course the big event is Northalsted Street Market Days, Aug. 13-14. I just heard that they’ve signed Darren Criss, who plays openlygay Blaine on “Glee”, to perform. Remember he only plays a teenager on tv, he’s really 24, so lusting after him isn’t illegal or immoral. Maybe Egoist can provide his costume!

If the climate isn’t to your liking remember, you can view parade from air conditioned comfort at Sidetrack, Hydrate and Spin, where they’ll be showing it closed circuit on monitors throughout the bar…After you’ve hit all the bars along the parade route, you’re still not done. Check out the “Salvation Pride Parade T Dance” at V Live on Centerstage. The starstudded event will feature Tony Moran, Tracy Young & Ricky Sinz, Pier Morrocco, Miswhite, Phil DaBeatz, Luis M, Milty Evans, and Louie Loop. The 10-hour bash kicks off at 6p… Up north there are a number of post parade parties. Touché has a beer bust and free buffet kicking off at 4, of course Big Chicks will be even more packed than usual for its regularly scheduled free Sunday buffet and vodka lemonades for two and a half bucks. Parlour pits diva against diva with its “Kylie vs. Madonna Dance Party”… Finally, I love Jackhammer “Pride as seen from space” ad. I knew that the guys there had big

By Gregg Shapiro Happy Pride to y’all! It’s late June and if Mother Nature cooperates, it’s probably a scorcher out there. If you need to take a break from your Pride and Pridefest activities, crank up the A/C, turn on the TV and pop these DVDs in to the player and cool off for a bit. With 800 sketches (on 22 discs!) from which to choose (and a catchy theme song by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet), it wouldn’t be fair to expect the brilliant, all-male, cross-dressing, Canadian comedy troupe (including openly gay member Scott Thompson) The Kids In The Hall, to hit one out of the park each time. But more often than not, which is pretty good odds, The Kids knew how to get a laugh, something they did for five seasons, from 1988 until 1995.

Buddy, a swishy but tough, campy and clever barfly turned bar owner who counted Queen Elizabeth among his close friends. Thompson was also one third of the “Steps” trio, which featured three gay friends–Butch (Thompson), Smitty (Kevin McDonald) and Riley (Foley)— observing and commenting on gay culture. Aside from the material from all five seasons, “The Kids In The Hall: The Complete Series” (A&E Home Entertainment/Broadway Video) box set also includes one bonus DVD for each of the respective seasons. Additionally, the 2010 “Kids In the Hall” mini-series “Death Comes To Town,” a comedic murder mystery about the death of mayor of Shucktown following the failure of the town to get to host the 2028 Olympics.

Not your average legal comedy/drama, Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva” begins with a Groundbreaking in ways that “Saturday Night twisted concept and struts down the runway Live” never dared, “The Kids In The Hall” not only with it, full steam ahead.
