44th ANNUAL PRIDE PARADE Chicago’s 44th annual Pride Parade, is Sunday, June 30 steps off from Broadway and Montrose at noon. It proceeds south on Broadway to Halsted, south on Halsted, then east on Belmont; turning south onto Broadway again before heading east on Diversey to Cannon Dr.. in Lincoln Park before dispersing. This is the second year following the new route which was changed due safety issues. To accommodate the increased number of spectators, the route was lengthened by several blocks last year, thus adding more space for people to view the parade.

to Clark Street, then south to LaSalle, where a rally was held. The parade did not draw more than 150,000 people until 1989. Estimates now place the crowd participating and watching the parade at 750,000.

Grand Marshall

There will also be six pedestrian crossover streets on the parade route staffed by Chicago Police officers to allow spectators to cross from one side of the parade route to another, to balance out the crowd. They include: Montrose, Irving Park, Addison, Grace, Roscoe and Wellington. Those attending the parade are advised to consider making use of the Red Line’s stations at Wilson or Sheridan.

Grand marshal for this year’s parade is Wade Davis, former NFL football player and activist. He played for the Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins and teams within the NFL European league. Currently he works at the Hetrick Martin Institute where he works with at-risk youth. He has also represented President Obama, speaking on behalf of the president advocating for GLBT rights and inclusiveness. Recently, he launched the “You Belong” initiative , a series of 4-day sports instruction and leadership development clinics for GLBT youth and straight allies that will be offered throughout the U.S., with the first one in being held in Chicago this July at the Center on Halsted.

Chicago’s First Pride Parade

The first Pride Parade in Chicago wasn’t actually a parade, but a protest march of about 200 people, on Saturday, June 27, 1970, from Washington Square Park (“Bughouse Square”) to the Water Tower. That was the planned route, however, many of the participants spontaneously continued the protest and marched to the Civic Center (now Richard J. Daley) Plaza. The next year, June 27th, 1,000 people marched from Diversey Harbor west 24 boi

While many have called for banning politicians from this year’s parade, as a sign of protest to the gay marriage bill not being called for a vote, this year, at least, all politicians will be welcome and will follow the Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame float, as usual.

There are also several sites where cooling buses will be located and also a physically challenged/wheelchair and senior area for people who need or want more space. The parade web site, chicagopridecalendar.org will have updated information about these two areas as well as a list of street closures/no parking/tow zone streets. Spectators should be aware that the consumption of alcoholic beverages by spectators on the sidewalks or streets is prohibited by city ordinance and police are enforcing the ordinance more rigidly than in the past. ABC 7 Chicago is will air a one-hour version of the parade later that night, June 30. Check local listings for the time. In addition WCPT (820 AM, 92.7 FM) will be broadcasting live coverage of the parade.

CHICAGO SPOTLIGHT RICHARD PFEIFFER By Gregg Shapiro

Richard Pfeiffer has been involved with Gay and Lesbian Pride Week Committee since 1971, its second year of existence. During the early years of Pride Week, he organized major dances, including one at the Allerton Hotel on Michigan Avenue, as well as an annual Pride Rally in what is now Daley Plaza. He heads up a team that coordinates the annual Pride Parade, arranging for necessary permits and police protection. Pfeiffer became a member of the Chicago Gay Alliance in 1971, and he was among the volunteers who staffed the city’s first Gay Community Center. He was coordinator of the group’s speaker’s service, and he later served as the organization’s President. He was among the earliest volunteers for Gay Horizons [now The Center on Halsted], penned a monthly column for three years for the Chicago Gay Crusader continued at GayLife. Pfeiffer was a founding member of the City of Chicago’s Committee on Gay/Lesbian Issues. When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? Like most GLBT youth I grew up knowing that I was “different.” I came out sexually in my late teens, but I carried a lot of emotional baggage. I came out emotionally at 22, when I became involved in an organization called the Chicago Gay Alliance (CGA) that had a community center on Elm Street just south of the Old Town neighborhood. It was a meeting place for GLBT’s at that time. Eventually, I became the coordinator of CGA’s Speaker’s Service and later founded the Gay Speakers Bureau, wherein we would do speaking engagements at high schools,

colleges, universities, church groups and in the broadcast and print media. The friends that I made in those organizations and others that I have been involved in, have lasted a lifetime. My experience at CGA and the years that followed enabled me to grow. In fact I met my spouse, Tim Frye around the same time, and we have been together for forty three years. Please name five of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. I don’t want to single out any one person, there are so many. Locally there are dozens of people who I have worked with over the years who have given their time and energy to so many community organizations and charities such as Horizons Community Services (now the Center on Halsted); the Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame; campus groups, etc. It would be unfair to single out only five ! What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? I would say being the coordinator of the Chicago Annual Pride Parade. However, I’m also proud of the work I did with the Gay Speakers Bureau, Horizons Community Services and other organizations. My partner Tim has also been involved with the parade and other organizations in which I have taken part, and has been very supportive. What are your future goals and aspirations? To continue being active and involved. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation? Be proud, love, and live every day to the fullest.

IN THE KNOW, ON THE GO Continued..... been since you’ve been to The Baton? Isn’t it time to stop in? Hey, there’s a coupon in this issue for 2 for 1 admission, let’s go see the Tops in the Nation Revue.

WTF?

Have you seen the new billboards and CTA ads that read, “Northalsted Sunday Funday” Come straight to Halsted!” and wondered “What the fuck does that mean?” At first I thought that they were trying to turn Halsted straight for one day a week. Of course, my first concern was, “Then who the hell is going to know all the stuff to do during show tunes at Sidetrack?” What it means is that they’re swining open the closet door to Boystown and inviting

46 boi

straight allies to join in the fun. Think about it, straight bars began welcoming gays into their venues when the recession hit (some might be crass and point out it was mainly to cash in on the gay dollar, but we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and just say they were being inclusive.) So why not try the trend in reverse band get straight people to spend their money in gay bars and clubs. Isn’t that what gay pride is all about anyway, to be accepted and proud of who you are, whoever you are... and that of course goes both ways. So invite your friends to come Straight to Halsted! Just ask them to leave the SUV strollers at home, it’s crowded enough as it is.!
