KINGS OF CLUBS BEHIND THE BAR • TABLE HOPPING

Night time is the right time, especially when you’re young, single and full of energy. There are plenty of folks to testify to that along Halsted. However, there are also plenty of people in our community looking for something a little different from what the clubs on the strip have to offer. That’s what’s great about living in a city the size of Chicago. I like to compare Halsted to an upscale shopping mall. You’ve got your big anchor places, just like a mall. Instead of Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Saks, you have Sidetrack and Roscoe’s and Spin. Then you’ve got your specialty shops, Hydrate, Buck’s, Cell Block, Circuit, Charlie’s, Cocktail, etc. all filling the needs of their niche market. There are the little boutique type bars, Minibar Scarlet, Bobby Love’s and then the places where you can get your everyday items, Little Jim’s, Lucky Horseshoe, North End. Each business offers something unique to draw in customers. And, just as stores in a mall offer incentives and special events, bars and clubs turn to party promoters and personalities to get a little buzz going. This issue we take a look at a few of the celebutants that keep the club scene so interesting, whether along the Halsted Strip or in other, less gay-centric, but still gay welcoming neighborhoods. Yes, there is life beyond Halsted, quite a bit in fact. And to mix my metaphors, the party promoters are the ringleaders of the big gay circus. We also introduce you toa few of the friendly faces that you’re apt to find “behind the bar” at some of the bars and clubs around Chicago. Meanwhile we also see what’s going on in the food court that is Chicago’s dining scene, Gregg Shapiro gives us the lowdown on summer movies, Harry Taint all the dish on what’s going on around town and Ace Magyar dishes out good advice-and the issues he tackles this week are pretty out there!

Matthew Harvat started his career as a

producer and gave birth to his alter ego Circuit Mom as a birthday favor in 1998 for a friend. The past dozen or so years have been a journey of performing for various local and national events that focus on raising awareness and much needed funds for the GLBT community. Circuit Mom Productions(CMP) has adopted the motto of “Better Parties Through Positive Energy” That positive energy has paid off. Circuit Mom’s calendar reads like a “Who’s Who” of top level events nationwide. Among just a few of the events Harvat’s company has worked with are New York City’s Heritage of Pride celebration, Toronto’s “Fashion Cares” a MAC Cosmetics HIV/ AIDS event, Montreal’s Black and Blue Festival, Hotlanta, and the world famous “Wigstock”. Over the years Circuit Mom has shared the stage with countless international artists such as; Taylor Dayne, Reina, Suzanne Palmer, the cast of “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”, Missy Elliot, Jody Watley and Jennifer Holliday, among many others. His style has been described as a fusion of Broadway sensibility with dance floor energy. As he explains, “We try to take a particular song and make it our own by presenting it in a way that the audience would not expect. Hopefully, every time people hear that song from that point on, they think of us!”

The Circuit Mom “family” consists of Todd Michael Kiech serves as artistic director/casting director and choreographer . Mark Baker, former producer of “Gay Days-Orlando” was a driving force behind Circuit MOM’s international success. Paolo Pincente of Crobar and Roger Evans (aka Circuit DAD) both help to keep Mom in the forefront of club and event culture. Harvat is the first to give credit where credit is due, “It has never been one person. It’s a family. Circuit Mom is the result of an endless number of extremely talented people who generously juggle jobs and schedules so they may perform. They are a special group who tirelessly give their time and talent to each cause.”

Bob Yeaworth is the man behind the uber s uccessful Clubhouse Productions, which has catered to the social wants and needs of the In Chicago, Circuit MOM has held concert/dance city’s gay and lesbian people of color. His parties, largely catered to the “alternative” side of the queer community, have received press in Spin Magazine, Time Out and gay.com. He has worked with MIA, Peaches and Sammy Jo (of Scissor Sisters fame).

Gay Chicago, City’s Longest Running GLBT Publication Celebrates 35 Years by Chuck Colbert

To mark the milestone, Gay Chicago made some changes. Now printed in a tabloid format, the publication has also dropped the word “magazine” from its title. Formerly known primarily for its focus on entertainment and nightlife, it now has a local hard news and editorial emphasis. A number of news writers from Chicago Free Press were brought on board in the wake of the that paper’s demise last year. They are Matt Simonette, Amy Wooten, and Gary Barlow, who serves as editor in chief. Focusing on pop culture, Gregg Shapiro is the entertainment editor. Publisher Craig Gernhardt said those additions required a format change. “It was a disservice to the recently brought-aboard news writers to have the publication wrapped up in a magazine format,” he explains. “When we covered a story before, it would never get picked up by the Chicago Tribune, Sun-Times, Huffington Post, or TV and radio stations, now these mainstream outlets are using our reports for sources. It showed me that we’re doing something the public is not getting; hyper local LGBT news in our community.” Craig’s late father, Ralph Paul Gernhardt, founded Gay Chicago Magazine in 1976. Over the years, Gay Chicago developed along with the community, altering its format and style. In 1991, Gay Chicago Magazine was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame as its first

inductee. Ralph Paul Gernhardt was inducted in 2004. Two years later, he died of lung cancer, leaving the publication to his son. “I promised my father that I would continue his legacy, one way or another,” Craig said. Craig changed the corporation from a “for-profit to a not-for-profit, under the advice of our accountant with the news format change, thus forming the Gay Chicago Foundation,” he said. Despite the strength of the publication’s web presence, Gernhardt remains a hard-copy believer. “I do believe print is still viable,” he said. “There are still people out there who want to read newspapers. My name is Elan (in Native American the name Elan means friendly), I’m 22 and was born and raised on an Indian reservation in northern Wisconsin (parts of the Johnny Depp movie “Public Enemy” was filmed nearby). I went to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh on an athletic scholarship to study urban planning, and to compete in inter-collegiate track, cross-country and gymnastics. From there I packed my bags for Chicago. At a very young age I was put in classes and training for gymnastics, diving, piano, and voice. I ended up competing at a state level in gymnastics and became involved in many musical and theatrical productions. I enjoy anything athletic that challenges my physical ability, and I’malways pushing myself to get good at as many activities as I could. The fact that my interests are all phyical is no accident. My college studies, and now my job in an architectural firm, are pretty sedentary, so Iike to work up a sweat in my off hours. If I had to pick a dream job, it would be as a successful actor/singer. I’m a fairly decent actor, but my singing needs work. That’s why I take voice lessons twice a week. When I feel I am good enough, I plan to try out for Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus, just for fun. Maybe I’ll even meet someone.... with a good voice of course. It wasn’t until I moved to Chicago that I started getting into modeling. from the audience asked if he could do some hedshots for me for free, as he was just starting out. When I asked if he would do a couple shot so that I could apply to be a Cover BOI, he not only took the shots, but sent them to the BOI office for me! I’m happy to be a Cover BOI. Chicago is a great town and I’ve made a lot of friends since I’ve moved here. When I was asked what advice would I give the BOI readers, I would say that I find that a lot of people staying home spending most of their time with their face in the computer on Facebook or Twitter. Social networking is nice, but don’t be a slave to it! When you do meet someone face to face, put your smartphone away,. It’s a real turn off when someone is more interested in checking their text messages than in getting to know you. boi 21

“Beginners”, the official “gay” movie of summer 2011, written and directed by Mike Mills has a way of staying with you long after it has faded from the screen. “Beginners” takes a non-traditional approach to telling a non-traditional story and succeeds on every level. Oliver (Ewan McGregor), an artist with his own relationship issues, has come to terms with his father Hal’s coming out in his 70s when he learns that Hal is dying of cancer. Around the same time Oliver meets actress Anna (Mélanie Laurent), who could either be the best possible thing for him or the worst. It’s well worth watching Oliver, Hal and Anna make their way through the challenging landscape. “Midnight In Paris”, while not as nearperfect as Woody Allen’s previous work, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” still finds a way to meld many of the elements for a completely delightful, humorous, picturesque and entertaining movie experience. “Hollywood hack” Gil (Owen Wilson) and his chilly fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) are in Paris with her stuffy, Republican parents. Things take an unexpected turn when Gil finds himself lost at the stroke of midnight as the modern cars on the street are replaced by vintage models. Gil climbs into a classic Peugeot and is transported to a party at Jean Cocteau’s where he meets Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald and later finds himself talking to Ernest Hemingway, who offers to show Gil’s manuscript to Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates). The next night, Gil recreates his experience, whisked off to Gertrude and Alice’s where he meets Picasso and so “Midnight In Paris” goes, back and forth in time, from the present to the 1920s, making for a neat and sweet little package. 22 boi

“Super 8” Combines influences ranging from Stephen King’s “Stand By Me” to Steven Spielberg’s “E.T.” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” to Abrams own “Cloverfield” . Beginning on a somber note, at the funeral of young Joe’s mother, who was killed in a factory mishap, “Super 8” doesn’t linger long on the down side. Joe’s best buddy Charles is a budding filmmaker and with his Super 8 camera in hand, goes forward with his plans to make a zombie movie in the kids’ Ohio hometown in the late 1970s. They meet up with his friends to begin filming Charles’ movie, well past his bedtime. But just as they are in the middle of a shot they witness their science teacher drive his pick-up truck onto the train tracks and intentionally derail a freight train. Pretty soon the military has arrived at the crash site and then strange things begin to happen as the military tries to keep the crash a secret. That is until this bunch of kids uncovers the truth. Fun, fast-paced, loud and surprisingly touching, “Super 8” is just that, super. “The Green Lantern” The most science fictiony of the recent spate of comic book movie adaptations, “The Green Lantern” tells the tale of how hotshot pilot Hal (Ryan Reynolds) came to become one of the harnessers of emerald energy, a member of the Green Lantern corps and a wearer of the ring. Chosen by the ring itself, following the death of a corps member at the ruthless and soul sucking hands of escaped villain Parallax (voiced by Clancy Brown), Hal at first resists then takes his rightful place. But Parallax isn’t Hal/GL’s only problem. He has to deal with competitive romantic interest Carol (Blake Lively), not to mention nebbishy scientific genius Hector (Peter Sarsgaard) who undergoes his own horrifying transformation when infected with a Parallax space virus. Short on substance (and shirtless Reynolds) and long on less than special effects, the only thing green here is the money that will be raked in (or maybe lost) at the box office.

Hundred’s turned out to voice their concern. “I am extremely concerned about the recent attacks that have taken place in our neighborhood. Please know that safety in the 44th Ward is my top concern and Halsted is one of the priority streets for late night attention. Anxious in Andersonville I have a good friend that has had another relationship crash and burn and, as usual, she’s devastated. She always seems to pick women who are somehow unable to commit to a relationship with her. She was in a long-term (12+ years) relationship with a delightful woman who couldn’t stay monogamous. Her next relationship was with a woman who was completely closeted to her family and then was offered a job 2,000 miles away. My friend continued in this relationship for far too long before finally admitting it wasn’t working. Now she’s involved with a married woman who keeps promising to leave her husband (for three years now), which everyone except my friend realizes isn’t going to happen. What can I do to help my friend? I’ve pointed this pattern out to her and she agrees that it is a problem. She’s a terrific woman and would make someone a great spouse. Dear AA Join the club. We all have a friend that keeps repeating the same behaviors over and over expecting different results. Until she’s ready to address why she keeps picking partners that are unavailable, she’ll never move on. If she’s not seeing a therapist, she should be. If she’s been seeing a therapist for a while and hasn’t been able to confront this issue, she may need to try another form of counseling. On the Down Low I’m a married man and came to realize that I was gay after I was married and had had children. I still love my wife, but I’m not attracted to her sexually. Until recently it’s been fine having an occasional fling on the side or hitting a bathhouse every now and then (I always practice safe sex.) A few weeks ago, I went to a bathhouse and this guy and I just connected. Even though my wife and I have been together for nearly 10 years I never met her brother until recently, as he just came back from serving in Iraq.I am totally in love with him and can’t think about anything else. The best thing would be for both of you to walk away from this and never have sex again. I doubt that’s going to happen. My advice would be to sort out your feelings with the help of a counselor. You need to be honest with your wife about your feelings for other men. After she’s had time to deal with that, then you can possibly broach the subject of your relationship with her brother. Don’t delay; this is a time bomb just waiting to go off. Guilt-Ridden on Ridge The other morning I woke up and, after a few groggy seconds, I realized that my dog was licking my ass and balls. (I’d had a long day and stripped and collapsed on the bed on top of the covers.) By the time I came out of my daze I had a raging erection and within seconds shot a load all over my sheets. It was great, but I feel like real perv. Dear GRR Yes, you should have stopped your dog from doing that. The real issue here is twofold. Knowingly having sex with a pet is just wrong. How long of a time-frame are we talking about? If it was literally a matter of a minute or two before you fully woke and had your orgasm, we’re in the strange, but (borderline) acceptable category. If it was more than a very brief time, things are a little cloudier. My feeling is, as long as it doesn’t happen again you have nothing to feel guilty about.
