ISSUE 13.12
Boi’S LIFE In this issue it is all about pampering. As in, taking time out for youself to relax or indulge yourself. Pampering in the fetish world may be whole other matter all together, but we’ll leave that for another day. In “The Artist’s Way”, Julia Cameron contributes an essay on small luxuries. She discusses how different people have different things that make them feel rich, but aren’t actually very expensive. Little treats that, while they might not cost much, make’s the person feel better. Simple acts such as always buying fresh berries every week, or buying that luxury soap. Cameron states that indulging in these simple pleasures is one way to nurture the soul, to take care of ourselves so that we remain creatively inspired and resilient. In this issue, we look at ways to pamper yourself, to renew your spirit, whether it be a “blow the budget” day at a spa, buying that top of the line bicycle or making a small purchase, such as some designer underwear. We all must take time to nourish our own soul, for as that great philosopher, RuPaul says, “If you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love anyone else?” Can I get an “Amen”? boi

PAMPER YOURSELF By Anita Taylor In our busy lives, we sometimes forget to set aside time for ourselves. Taking time to treat yourself well is not a luxury it is an investment. The better you feel, the better you’ll perform, whether it is at work, a hobby or just life in general. In this issue, we offer some suggestions for ways to reward yourself for a life well lived.
Pamper Your Body
Pamper Your Wardrobe
A well-made piece of clothing can make you feel like a million bucks. If you’ve got the cash, splurge on a top of the line custom tailored suit. Think of it as an investment, a well fitting suit will make you look more successful. If your budget is a bit tighter, splurge on some quality underwear or swimwear. It is easy to do so without breaking the bank and a well fitting swimsuit can get you some extra attention at Hollywood Beach.
There are any numbers of ways to pamper your body, from things as simple as setting aside time to take a bubble bath to enjoying spa services. Everyone has their own idea of what pampering themselves means. My friend Carrie says putting aside an hour each day to run is how she pampers herself. For me that sounds like agony, I’m more the 90 minute massage type, but to each their own. Whether it Egoist, 3706 N. Halsted, carries a full line means hiring a personal trainer, buying of swimwear including this tasty item yourself a bike or getting that expensive from AussieBum (the suit, not the model) haircut, treat yourself now and then, it’s good for you.
Cram carries many pieces from the Emporio Armani line, ranging from casual wear to suits and accessories.
Pamper Your Home Flashes offers a variety of massage techniques, including Thai style. Thai massage involves stretching and deep massage allowing for greater range of movement.
Even if you live in a pint-sized studio filled with IKEA knockoffs, you can indulge in a bit of luxury now and then. Buy a bouquet of fresh flowers every few days. The $3.99 bunches at Jewel or Dominick’s are a treat that nearly everyone can afford. Look for art in thrift stores and second hand shops. (Continued on Next Page)

PAMPER YOURSELF I discovered a signed and numbered print by Ed Paschke similar to the one below at the Brown Elephant.
Wednesdays at Hamburger Mary’s treat yourself to $2 all Specialtease cocktails. It was in perfect conditioned and beautifully framed and I got it for $25. I went on line and similar prints are selling for ten times that amount.
Pamper Your Palate
Treat yourself to a fine dining experience. If you’ve got the green, dinner at Tru, priced at about $250$400 a person is the experience of a lifetime. Alternatively, check out some of the higher-priced restaurants at lunch. Joe’s Stone Crab can easily run more than $100 a person. We enjoyed lunch there for $25 each and that included a shared dessert, tax and tip! If you haven’t that much cash, a little research on the Internet can find great deals on prix fixe meals that cost little more than a bucket of chicken. For example, all martinis are half-priced all day Sunday at Kit Kat. Big Chicks offers burgers for a buck on Monday nights, indulge yourself and get the baby lettuce salad or fries for only a buck!
Angelina is a popular place in Boystown which will get Lakeview residents a 20% discount on Wednesday nights.
Pamper Your Soul
Make time in your schedule to do things you want to do. Go to church or temple, if that’s your inclination. If lying around reading trashy novels gives you a sense of peace, enjoy it! Buy those tickets for a circuit party, such as the “Superhero Revolution” at House of Blues or “Alegria” at the Nikki club during Market Days weekend and party the night away. (Continued on Page 12)

If you yearn for culture, hit the museums. All museums in Chicago have free days. Some once a month during the fall and winter (check out the schedule at choosechicago.org), others on a more regular basis (some are free only for Illinois residents.) Among some of the more regularly scheduled free days are: Museum of Contemporary Art; every Tuesday, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum; every Thursday, Swedish American Museum; 2nd Tuesday of the month, and the Chicago Children’s Museum on Navy Pier-every Thursday, 5-8pm.
And, if you ever wondered what it was like in those mansions in the Gold Coast, check out the Charnley-Persky House, 1365 N. Astor, with free tours every Wednesday on a first come first served basis. Two powerhouses of Chicago architecture, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright collaborated on the design for this mansion. 12 boi

If it’s free you’r looking for, take a nice relaxing bath. Dim the lights in your bathroom so it’s darker or just go by candle light. Cleopatra put milk into her bath, some celebrities use wine, some use bath bombs, olive oil, coconut oil, etc. Try slowly burning essential oils or by a oxygen rejuvenating machine that lets steam gently float around the room.
A FOODIE’S PARADISE Chicago Gourmet 2012, presented by Bon Appétit on Sept. 28-30 at Millennium Park is a celebration of food and wine. Kicking off the weekend on Friday, September 28, is the Hamburger Hop, a tasty burger showdown. Ticket holders for this event will sample, gourmet burgers, along with beer, wine and, of course, spectacular city views as a celebrity panel of judges determines the city’s best burger. Tickets for the first of what is expected to be many events promoting Chicago Gourmet, Les Amis du Chef are now on sale. Chicago spotlight: RICK AGUILAR Interviews with leaders in Chicago’s GLBT community By Gregg Shapiro Since he is a photographer, and often behind the camera, you might be able to identify Rick Aguilar’s photos before you recognize him. A talented and prolific shutterbug, Aguilar can often be seen at a vast array of community events, from galas to parades and marches. He also donates a great deal of his time to notfor-profits providing publicity photos. The proprietor of his own photo studio (rickaguilar.com), some of Aguilar’s recent portraiture was featured on VH1’s “My Big, Fat Fabulous Wedding.” A member of professional organizations such as Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) and Photographers of America (PPA), the genial Aguilar took time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for Boi Magazine. When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? I was in my 20s. It seemed a bit harder then, not as common as today. Once I did come out, I really did feel whole. (Of course, years later my family all told me, “We always knew you were gay!”)
22 boi
Please name five of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. Gary Chichester, one of Chicago’s own, for the tireless work he does for the community and for officiating our wedding last year! Harvey Milk for standing up for what is right. Barney Frank for his high political profile. Ellen Degeneres for the big risk she took by coming out on TV in the ‘90s. All the fed up gays at the Stonewall Inn in 1969! What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? My photography of course! I have been donating my skills to the GLBT community for 20 years and continue to do so. What are your future goals and aspirations? To be an inspiration to as a gay business owner and helping to make gay weddings more accepted through my photography. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation. Be proud of who you are, and make a difference in the world some way.

Relationship & sex
Perplexed in South Shore
My boyfriend and I thought it would be fun to go out in drag last Halloween (neither of had ever done it before). It was a blast, but once was enough for me. He’s totally into it now. He’s a sweet man and kind of androgynous looking anyway, so he made a pretty girl, beautiful actually. He got lots of attention that night and I think it kind of went to his head. Now he wants us to have sex while he’s in drag. I did it once, but I don’t really like it. I just found out that he’s meeting straight dudes on the Internet and not telling them he’s a dude. He says he’s not interested in anything more than flirting with them and that I have nothing to worry about, he’s not going to cheat on me. I don’t know what to do.
PSS
Wow, you have a lot to deal with. Let’s sort them out and tackle each problem one at a time. The big one is your boyfriend’s newfound (or so it appears) gender identity issues. My guess is that is a feeling that he’s kept bottled up inside for a while. Someone doesn’t put on a dress once and suddenly change their entire orientation. He’s probably going through a huge emotional upheaval. The acting out aspects of this are the most troubling, when you say he’s flirting with dudes he’s met on the internet, I assume that means he’s meeting these men face to face. That is a dangerous practice. See if you can get him to stop doing that while you two work this out. Use it as a bargaining chip.
either of these options and you should not feel guilty. Both you and your boyfriend are dealing with major upheavals in your lives and relationship and should seek help, individually and jointly, from counselors familiar with GLBT and gender identity issues.
Butchy Woman
My girlfriend is always asking me if an outfit makes her look fat. She is fat, but I don’t care, I love her the way she is. How should I answer her question?
BW
Say, “You look perfect to me.” You won’t be lying.
Grossed Out On Neva
My roommate constantly “forgets” to flush the toilet after he has a bowel movement. I have mentioned this enough times to him that I’m beginning to think he does this on purpose. We get along great otherwise and have been living together for almost six years. I am the point where I’m thinking of moving out, but I love our apartment and the location is perfect. How can I break him of this habit?
GOON
There can only be two reasons for him to continue to do this after you have asked him to stop repeatedly; he wants you to move out, or he’s doing it to annoy you on purpose. Your choices are similarly numbered, 1) Move out or 2) Stop complaining about it and just flush before you look down. Actually, there’s a third option, though I really can’t endorse it. Get a The next step is for you to get some help paper cup, scoop up his “present” and place in sorting out your feelings about how the cup on her bedside table or desk. That is a this impacts your relationship. If you love totally inappropriate response, but then, so is him, but don’t want to participate in his fantasies, you have every right to say so. Then his behavior. I’m chastising myself right now for even mentioning it, but I’m also betting you have to decide how to proceed from it works. If it doesn’t, start looking for a new there, as a caring friend or as a boyfriend. place or leave some “presents” of your own. It is perfectly legitimate for you to choose boi 29
