A Carnival for Everyone! The theme of this year’s Northalsted Market Days is “Carnival.” And folks: We have The Party for you! Let’s start with the non-stop music lineup on three stages (Belmont, Roscoe and Brompton. From rock legend Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and Jennifer Holliday, Broadway’s original “Dreamgirl,” to American Idol faves Blake Lewis and Gina Glocksen, that’s just for starters. There’s also Cuban-American pop heartthrob Jon Secada, Chicago’s own rocker girl, Cathy Richardson (along with The Marcrodots), and Logo channel fave Adam Barta. The bottom line? Something for every musical taste! And in keeping with our carnival theme, stroll over to Aldine, as well as Addison, and have fun at the “mini-carnivals” set up at those two locations for you to enjoy. In addition to the crowd-watching at Northalsted Market Days (which, to many, is always a carnival), there’s plenty more to do. With 400 vendors, there’s every type of food imaginable. The same holds true for the artwork on display and community-centric vibe that adds a special feel to the Northalsted Market Days experience. JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS Joan Jett is an originator, an innovator, and a visionary. As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, she’s had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” She sits at the head of her own independent label, Blackheart Records. Jett has acted in movies, including 1987’s “Light of Day”, with Michael J. Fox and Gena Rowlands, and in a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, “The Rocky Horror Show”. As a producer, she has overseen albums by Bikini Kill, Circus Lupus, and the Vacancies, as well as the Germs’ L.A. punk masterpiece, “GI”. Jett is one of only two women named to Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time. Since co-founding the Runaways with Cherie Currie, the pioneering all-girl punk quintet, at age 15, Jett’s determination and drive have kept her in the public eye. After the success of its first single, “Cherry Bomb,” the Runaways toured with such acts as the Ramones, Cheap Trick, and Tom Petty. In Japan, the band became huge stars - their arrival for a set of shows in 1977 was a Beatlemanialike frenzy. Currie left the band after the Japan tour to deal with personal problems - but Jett decided to keep fighting the rock & roll fight, with the Runaways and then on her own. Her music has become a permanent force in mainstream culture. Faith Hill sings “I Hate Myself for Loving You” as the theme for NBC’s Sunday Night Football, and “Bad Reputation” is the theme for the hit show “American Chopper”. Jett’s version of “Love is All Around,” the theme from the “Mary Tyler Moore” show, became a popular anthem for women’s sports. Her songs have also been featured in countless films, including “Shrek”, “Charlie’s Angels” and “Monster”. HOUSE OF WINEHOUSE Amy Winehouse is a five-time Grammy winner; hailed as a musical genius. Her latest album, “Back to Black” has made the U.K.’s Top 10 List of best-selling albums of the 21st century—it is no wonder why a band would want to emulate the unique style and unforgettable voice of the incomparable Amy Winehouse. Out of love and respect for such a profound artist, Dana DeLorenzo wanted to do just that. After months of studying Winehouse’s voice, speech, and body language (and adding the cat-eyes, tattoos, and now-famous beehive) the transformation began. The final addition was a powerful sixpiece band — and together, they conjure the spirit and extraordinary sound that has made House of Winehouse stand-out band.

JENNIFER HOLLIDAY
Jennifer Holliday is a legend of the musical theatre. Her ardent fans have remained faithful to her since her first heart-wrenching rendition of the show stopping “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” in the hit Broadway musical “Dreamgirls”. Arguably one of the greatest female voices of the rhythm and blues, she is a vocal powerhouse whose hardy, passionate, throaty and soulful voice touches hearts and leaves her audience flooded with deep emotions and soaring spirits. The two-time Grammy Award winner, has recorded five chart-making CD’s for Arista, Geffen and Intersound Records. She also has several chart-topping singles. Her signature spine-tingling hit song “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” charted at 1 on the R&B charts and was top 40 pop charter as well. Holliday won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance and she was awarded a second Grammy for Best Inspirational Vocal Performance for her soul-stirring rendition of Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” a tribute to the great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. “The Best of Jennifer Holliday: Millennium Collection” on Universal Records is her most recent release. Holliday, a versatile performer, has made several guest appearances as an actor on prime-time television. She is most widely known for her recurring role on “Ally McBeal,” the popular hit Fox TV show. Jennifer portrayed the character of Lisa Knowles, the outspoken church choir director and lead soloist at Ally McBeal’s favorite church. Her other television appearances include “Touched By An Angel,” “Ellen”, “Hang Time” and “The Love Boat”.

Jon Secada arrived in the United States from his native Cuba at the age of nine. He later enrolled at the University of Miami where he developed his considerable skills as a songwriter. In the late 1980’s he joined Gloria Estefan as a background singer and co-wrote “Coming Out of the Dark,” Gloria’s number one hit from her 1991 album “Into the Light.” His self-titled solo debut (released 1992) sold more than six million copies worldwide. He followed with the gold single “Just Another Day,” and three more top 30 hits, “Angel,” “I’m Free,” and “Do You Believe in Us?” “Otro Dia Mas Sin Verte” (Spanish-language version of the album), became the Number one Latin album of 1992 earning Jon his first Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album. His third album, “Amor,” (released 1995) brought his second Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance. Jon has amassed a career sales total of more than 20 million albums worldwide. His multi-faceted talent extends beyond singer/songwriter. He has lent his producing talent to the likes of Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and Mandy Moore. Jon has performed with opera legend Luciano Pavarotti, recorded a duet with the late Frank Sinatra on “The Best Is Yet to Come.” Jon starred in 1995’s hit musical revival of “Grease” on Broadway as Danny Zuko, as the Emcee in Sam Mendes’ critically acclaimed 2003 version of “Cabaret”, and as Joseph in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s & Tim Rice’s theatrical hit “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in 2004. “Same Dream” (released October 2005) includes the Top 10 hit “Window To My Heart,” which garnered solid airplay on nationally-syndicated radio shows “Delilah” and “The John Tesh Radio Show.” Additionally, over the 2005 holiday, Jon released his rendition of “Feliz Navidad.” Apart from his dedication to music, Jon devotes himself various charitable endeavors. He raises funds for the NARAS national “Keeping Music in Schools” campaign and is a supporter of many initiatives including the Pediatric Aids Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Lifebeat Concert, Amigos Together for Kids, Make-AWish Foundation and the Boys and Girls Clubs, among a host of other charitable organizations. 18 boi
CATHY RICHARDSON rose to Chicago rock royalty in the 90’s with her powerful, soulful voice leading her wildly popular namesake band, relentlessly pummeling the Midwest college and festival circuit turning in some 150 shows a year. Over the last decade, her career has taken a few colorful turns that steered her out of the local scene and into the international spotlight, smack in the middle of the rock n’ roll history that inspired her to rock. Along the way she’s continued releasing new records, picked up a Grammy Nomination, four DIY Music Awards… and a Doobie Award from High Times Magazine. Richardson’s real life rock n’ roll persona led to her discovery for the role of Janis Joplin in the original Off-Broadway cast of the show “Love, Janis” where she channeled the late music legend to rave reviews in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Arizona. In 2007, she toured the U.S. with Janis’ original band members, Big Brother and the Holding Company, on the “Summer of Love 40th Anniversary Tour”.

2009 ushered in the 40th Anniversary of the famed Woodstock Music and Art Fair and Richardson, on the “Heroes of Woodstock” tour, headlined in major venues across the United States and Europe, including the site of the original Woodstock in Bethel, NY. A film crew documented the Woodstock reunion tour for a forthcoming 3D concert film experience called the “Road to Woodstock”.

BRITBEAT is a tribute to the Beatles, with mop tops, retro costumes, vintage instruments and harmonizing vocals, BritBeat Beatles Its British style, charisma and Liverpudlian character creates the ultimate Beatles Tribute concert experience. DOT DOT DOT is a thrilling union of rock elements cloaked in dance beats with synthy frills. The band’s self-titled album offers short, accessible pop songs that fans have deemed irresistible. The band’s show is a non-stop spectacle of remarkable energy, engaging action, and passionate musicianship. The band performs more than 150 dates nationwide each year at night clubs, festivals, college parties, concert halls, and private events. Loyal fans, captivated by the band’s endearing personalities, proudly exhibit tattoos of the band, post their own covers of Dot Dot Dot songs online, and even furnish their cars with the band’s pictures and accessories. ERIC & THE ADAMS is a rock/pop/soul trio based out of Tulsa, OK already being heard nationwide after just releasing its debut five song album this past December. After a random meeting at an open mic in August of 2007, awardwinning singer/songwriter, Eric Himan, asked brother/sister rhythm section, Angel and Jimmy Adams if they would back him for a solo gig that required he have a band. By the time its debut CD arrived in stores and online in late 2009, the band had performed on the ABC and NBC affiliates in Tulsa and played gigs around the U.S., and this February, they are scheduled to play the wrap party for an episode of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” EVERELLE a longtime fixture on the local Chicago scene, features intense and hardhitting all-original music that is lean and muscular with a familiar but innovative sound.
Everelle found its current voice in September 2008 when C (vocals) joined forces with Shusto (drums), HVAC (bass), and Professor K (guitars). On the concert stage The 2010 edition of Lollapalooza, Aug. 6-8 in Grant Park, boasts a line-up featuring an abundance of GLBT acts and those of GLBT interest. The most obvious is Lady Gaga with gay-friendly co-headliners Green Day running a close second. Queer musicians can be found in bands ranging from Grizzly Bear and Semi Precious Weapons to The Soft Pack and My Dear Disco, to mention a few. If dancing is a part of your Lollapalooza experience, the organizers have done a commendable job of lining up acts to keep your body moving, including Devo, Phoenix, Hot Chip, Cut Copy, Chromeo, Matt & Kim, Hockey and Dan Black, as well as DJ sets by Chris Cox, Tiga, Brazilian Girls and many others. For the complete Lollapalooza festival schedule, visit lollapalooza.com. On the theatrical stage “Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida” at American Theater Company, 1909 W. Byron. The Tony Award-winning musical inspired by Verdi’s opera of the same title about the wartime love triangle between an Egyptian princess, her counterpart from Nubia and the man they share gets an effective and moving deconstruction in a production from the new Bailiwick company. Ably directed by Scott Ferguson, the 20-something cast of 20-something performers sometimes reveal their inexperience, but more than make up for it in talent. There are inherent problems with the musical’s book, which are not overcome in this production, but other than that, Bailiwick’s version is even better than the original Broadway production. 773.409.4125. On the big screen The summer 2010 movie roster is dominated by 3D and special effects flix. “Inception” (Warner Brothers): The mind-blowing “Inception” is in the latter category. Written and directed by Christopher (“Memento,” “The Dark Knight”) Nolan, “Inception” is about the business of dreams; dreams themselves and the money that can be made by influencing the dreams of others. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a sought after specialist in the realm of dream extraction, is dealing with his own nightmare. There’s the death of his fellow dream-weaving wife Mal (Marion Cotillard), for which he is under suspicion. Cut-throat businessman Saito (Ken Watanabe) makes Cobb a business proposition, which includes the clearing of Cobb’s name. The only problem is that the job doesn’t involve dream extraction. It’s a case of inception, implanting an idea into someone’s dreams. It’s a process that is difficult and dangerous. 52 boi
Once Cobb accepts the challenge, he assembles his dream team. Right hand man Arthur (Joseph GordonLevitt), forger Eames (Tom Hardy) and architect Ariadne (Ellen Page). Then he sets about making contact with his subject (Cillian Murphy.) And so the work begins. There is a lot to digest here and one’s capacity to suspend disbelief is challenged. It is also rewarded with spectacular visual effects that stay with you long after the movie ends. That said, there are fight sequences that go on far too long, which threaten to bog things down, and would be better saved for the “Inception” video game. Nevertheless, “Inception” is a dream come true for fans of action/fantasy films as it takes the genre to a whole new level. On the small screen Biopics continue to be a hit or miss proposition and “The Runaways” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment/ Apparition) is a good case in point. An all-girl rock band, The Runaways was formed in the mid-1970s, a time when such a thing was still on the risky side. As the story (director Floria Sigismondi’s screenplay, based on Cherie Currie’s book) goes, Joan Jett, nee Larkin (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (a suddenly grown-up Dakota Fanning), who both share a love of rock music and coloring outside of the lines, are groomed by record producer/songwriter/starmaker Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) to be lead guitarist and vocalist, respectively, in the next big thing. With other band members recruited, taskmaster Fowley puts the band through their paces and eventually unleashes them on the world. They caused a ripple stateside, but in Japan, they were tsunami strength. Unprepared for even the least of amount of success, the already unstable personalities inside and outside of the band begin to clash. Cherie, especially, feels pulled in a multitude of directions, becomes involved in a romantic relationship with Jett. Things come to a head during a recording session where tempers flare and instruments are thrown. Since the devil is in the details, it’s interesting that in Sigismondi’s vision, she gets certain things so right, such as the fashions, the hairstyles, the make-up, even the cars.while she drops the ball on others. The Runaways were more than just Jett and Currie, and yet their story is the main focus. This holds true right to the end where, post band break-up, the two young women who hadn’t spoken to each other for quite some time find themselves reunited on the radio – one as an interview subject, the other as a listener and caller. Kudos, however, to Sigismondi for not shying away from the same sex love story aspect of The Runaways’ tale.
