Wet Your Whistle at Market Days by Anita Taylor
Cruising down the midway of Market Days and ogling the hotties is hard work. Combine that with Chicago’s erratic weather and you could end up seriously dehydrated. Keep yourself lubricated by partaking of some of the adult refreshments available at various booths. That’s one of the best things about Market Days, you’re never more than 10 steps away from your next cocktail. If you over-indulge try to barf discreetly, perhaps into one of those ecologically friendly reusable plastic totes every booth seems to be handing out these days. That’s a good way to reuse, reduce and recycle. Perhaps you can take the contents home and compost them later. If that doesn’t seem to be your style, remember that there are trash containers every few yards as well. No one likes a party girl who tosses her cookies on their flip-flops (although in my opinion, anyone wearing flip-flops to an event like this deserves it). Market Days Buzz
Folks are all a’twitter (and on Facebook, too)
about the first Saturday night party for Market Days in seven years! Circuit MOM Productions is presenting “WILD WEST REVOLUTION” on Saturday, Aug. 13 at the House of Blues. Joe Gauthreaux and Roland Belmares face off in a wild west spinning showdown! Costumes are strongly suggested! BTW, congrats to Matt Harvat (aka circuit Mom) for being honored by OUT Magazine as one of its favorite “Nighthawks”, those who keep the city nights alive with parties, events and all that is hot after dark. He was honored with an exclusive “invite-only” party in his honor at Sidetrack on July 27. I had to jet to the coast for a private event, or I would have been there, too. Love ya’, Matt...Stop by the Syeamwiorks booth at Market Days and play Twister with some porn stars. Later that night they’ll be hanging out at the tub and you might be able to get into a more serious Twister redux.
Bar Wars
In a universe long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away…Oh, wait! That’s “Star Wars” I meant to talk about Bar Wars, otherwise known as Battle of the Bars”. The event is back and, by the time you read this, a couple of events have already taken place. But don’t worry you can jump in at any time, just like Double Dutch jump rope. For newbies, here’s how it works; representatives from various bar compete in ridiculous challenges (many based on game and reality shows). The winner will be crowned (sorry guys, no tiara) at the finale event on August 16th. The Battle of the Bars proudly supports the 2011 Gay Softball World Series which will be held in Chicago beginning August 29. The next few events are; July 28 at Jackhammer, Aug. 3 at Crew and Aug 4 T’s. There’s no cover for any of the events and there’ll be lots of give-aways. Plus, you get to see hot bartenders looking silly!... The ladies take over Funky Buddha Lounge on July 31 for “Sexy Sundays”.
Spin Cycle
The popular club that is host to all things RuPaul related (Shangela and Jade on July 30, Jara Sofia on Aug. 6, for example), offers up a change of pace with a show by the world’s oldest (or maybe it just seems that way) drag queen, Lady Bunny, 50 boi
on Aug. 12. Of course, the clubs is also famous for go-go boys and shower contests, so don’t think that it is a one trick pony. Speaking of ponies, I hear that a couple of the dancers (i.e. strippers) from Body Heat Dance Troupe, appearing on August 14, are hung like horses. Poor deformed creatures. Finally, the club is hosting a benefit for HRC, “Threads of Equality: A FashionEsque Show” on Friday, July 29, is billed as “…a night of fun, dance performances, burlesque, equality & fashion.” Tickets, priced $15-$30, include a oneyear HRC membership and one hour of hosted bar.
We’re Having A Heat Wave
So let your seat wave at Crew’s “Hot Jockstrap Contest” on Friday, July 29…Then for a change of costume, head up to Touché the next night, July 30 for “Cowboy Eye For the Leather Guy” (c’mon, that’s best title you guys could come up with?) where a leather stud gets a cowboy makeover from Alcala’s Western Wear and wins a pair of Windy City Rodeo tickets and more. The contest begins at 11 p.m., meet the new cowboy at midnight. Pick up an application at the bar…Speaking of heat waves (see how well I tie things together) Amy Armstrong celebrates the upcoming on-set of menopause with a birthday celebration show featuring the erstwhile Freddie Allen at Mayne Stage in Rogers Park on Thursday, Aug. 11th.
Ringside Seats
If you haven’t picked up your tickets to Dance for Life, benefiting AIDS Foundation of Chicago and the Dance for Life Fund, you’d better hustle your attractive little fanny or you’ll be S.O.L. Yes, the Saturday, Aug. 20, event is at the Auditorium Theater this year, so there are more seats, but this event always sells out, no matter how big the venue. It’s the event’s 20th anniversary so it’s bound to be extra special… Also, if you delayed buying tickets to About Face Theater’s fantastic world premiere of “The Homosexuals” you’re getting another chance. The show’s been extended through Aug. 14. It’s a show that I predict will go to Broadway and as if that weren’t incentive enough, there are a lot of hot men wearing little (and sometimes not any) clothing.
Shhhhh!

Drink for Charity
“Dining Out for Life” gives us an opportunity to indulge our gourmet side and now here comes “Bar AIDS” on August 25 to satisfy your inner Bacchus. Many of your favorite bars and clubs pledge a portion of their proceeds from that night to EdgeAlliance. The organization provides housing and support services for those who are impacted by this HIV/AIDS. In addition, Bar AIDS volunteers are at each venue to sell raffle tickets. Each donation of $10 or more automatically enters you in a chance to win one of many fantastic raffle prizes! So, what are you waiting for?! Celebrate the end of summer by proposing a toast all, for a great cause!

Thelma and Louise in September Vintage Thunderbird-driving diner waitress Louise (Susan Sarandon) and her best friend, put upon housewife Thelma (Geena Davis), plan a few days in a cabin in the Arkansas countryside but thing go seriously amiss before they reach their destination in “Thelma & Louise”. What begins as a harmless visit to a roadhouse, with the usually sedate Thelma letting her hair down, ends with her near-rape in a parking lot by Harlan. When Harlan goes too far after being stopped at gunpoint by jaded Louise she shoots him dead. The women jump into Louise’s green convertible and go from being on vacation to being on the lam. While Thelma veers in and out of hysteria, Louise keeps a level head, checking them in and out of hotels, arranging for boyfriend Jimmy (Michael Madsen) to wire her sixty-seven hundred dollars in savings to her in Oklahoma City and charting a course to Mexico. Meanwhile, Thelma’s sexist, car salesman husband Darryl (Christopher McDonald) is being visited by police detective Hal (Harvey Keitel), who has linked his wife and Thelma to the crime. But it’s an encounter with parolee JD (a fit Brad Pitt in what would become his breakthrough role) that has the greatest impact on the women. A raucous role in the hay with JD has a profound effect on Thelma who is so dazed by the experience that she doesn’t realize that he has stolen the getaway money. Now it’s Louise’s turn to be stunned and for Thelma to take control. In addition to having earth-shaking sex with JD, Thelma also picked up on his robbery technique and puts it to use in market. Flush with cash again, the women continue their star-crossed journey, teaching perverted truckers lessons, keeping in touch with Hal (who is genuinely on their side) and turning the tables on a highway patrolman, eventually finding themselves literally at the precipice.
For those seeing it for the first time or the fifth time, “Thelma & Louise” holds up well 20 years after its theatrical release. Ridley Scott’s direction of Callie Khouri’s Oscar-winning screenplay combined with the Oscarnominated performances by the lead actresses make the movie, and the characters, legendary. Blu-ray special features include audio commentary by Scott, Sarandon, Davis and Khouri and an extended ending with director’s commentary. “See You In September” is a completely forgettable rom-com by actress-turneddirector Tamara Tunie. Commitment-phobic Lindsay (Estella Warren) is more devastated by the annual August departure of her therapist (Whoopi Goldberg) than the romantic relationship she abruptly ends with Steven (out actor Christopher Sieber). Faced with 31 days without her therapist’s ear, Lindsay borrows BFF and boss Monica’s (Liza Lapira) Manhattan loft and forms her own Craig’s List-generated therapy support group. Populated with a variety of wacky characters, including much-divorced Charlotte (out actress Sandra Bernhard), hot nebbish Max, Max’s screwed up buddy A.J., diabolical doc filmmaker Eve and unfunny comic Roger, among others. The group survives a burglary at the loft, which strengthens their bond, and they begin meeting to help each other with their neuroses. By the end of this idiotic, offensive and pointless film, you’ll be ready for therapy and anti-depressants. The DVD contains no bonus material. Be grateful. boi 53
