MARKET DAYS 2012 PROGRAM GUIDE
It’s About to Get Hot!
Welcome! This already hot summer is about to even hotter when Northalsted Market Days returns for its 31st year on August 11 & 12, 2012. Scorchin’ hot is the best way to describe this year’s entertainment lineup with nearly 40 acts on four stages. When it comes to legends, you’d be hard-pressed to top Olivia Newton-John and The Pointer Sisters. No introduction needed! How about iconic Scottish chanteuse Sheena Easton and those spicy “new kids” on the block: American Idol’s Paris Bennett and Jessica Sutta from the Pussycat Dolls? Then there’s Tony Awardwinner Levi Kreis (“Million Dollar Quartet”) and those smokin’ hot singers/songwriters Adam Barta and Matt Zarley! Adding even more flavor to the weekend is a number of new bands and, of course, returning local favorites. Northalsted Market Days is hands-down Chicago’s best fest for people-watching, but there’s plenty more to do. With nearly 400 vendors, there’s every type of food imaginable, an eclectic artist mix and a cool collection of community booths that add a unique vibe to the Northalsted Market Days experience. Whether you’re from the city, suburbs or visiting from out-of-town, another state or another country, we welcome everyone to the 31st annual Northalsted Market Days, the Midwest’s largest and most fun-filled summer street fest!

MARKET DAYS ENTERTAINERS Olivia Newton-John
seems to be timeless. With a career spanning more than four decades she is still a vibrant, creative individual adored by fans across the world. With more than 100 million albums sold, Olivia’s successes include four Grammy Awards, numerous Country Music, American Music and People’s Choice Awards and ten number one hits. In 2010 Olivia also appeared as herself in two episodes of the hit series, “Glee,” adding another Top 100 hit to her credits with a new version of “Physical” sung with Jane Lynch. In 1978, her co-starring role with John Travolta in “Grease” catapulted Olivia into super-stardom. The film’s best-selling soundtrack featured the duets “You’re The One That I Want” and “Summer Nights,” with Travolta, as well as her mega-hit, “Hopelessly Devoted To You.” To date “Grease” remains the most successful movie musical in history. Her other feature film credits include “Toomorrow,” “Xanadu,” “Two of a Kind,” “It’s My Party,” “Sordid Lives,” “Score: A Hockey Musical,” and “A Few Best Men.” Throughout her career, Olivia has held many humanitarian causes close to her heart. She successfully overcame her own battle with breast cancer and used her experience to give inspiration to millions of people battling cancer. In 1999, Olivia garnered an Emmy Award for her song writing and returned to work as a performer touring extensively in the United States for the first time in seventeen years.
Sheena Easton has sold 20
million records worldwide, is a two-time Grammy Award winner, and has recorded six gold albums and one platinum album. She has recorded 16 studio albums, released 45 singles, and has 15 Top 40 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100. Sheena is the only artist in the history of the US Billboard charts to have a top three hit on each of the Billboards’
key charts: Adult Contemporary, Dance, Pop, Country, and R&B. Her string of hits in the ‘80s includes “Morning Train”, “For Your Eyes Only”, “Strut”, “Sugar Walls”, “The Lover in Me” and “U Got the Look” with Prince.
Motherhood led her to curtail her appearances and focus on casino gigs, corporate shows and theatrical work, such as starring in the Broadway revivals of “Man of La Mancha” and “Grease”. She also voiced several characters in the animated series “Gargoyles”, including Lady Finella, the Banshee, Molly and Robyn Canmore. She lives in Las Vegas with her two children and often performs in various casino venues.
Levi Kreis won the 2010
Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Jerry Lee Lewis in the Broadway hit, “Million Dollar Quartet” after originating the role in the Chicago production of the long-running show. Levi’s road from East Tennessee to Broadway began in Nashville, where as a Christian artist, he loved the camaraderie but chafed at the hypocrisy. During the Broadway run of “Million Dollar Quartet”, Levi would spend his off days traveling from New York City to headline solo shows at theaters across the United States. His third CD, “Where I Belong” distilled Levi’s gospel past and pop present into a formidable slate of songs. Videos on Logo, a number one video on MTVhive.com, a single premiering on FX’s “Sons of Anarchy”, chart positions on iTunes, a spot on the annual Out100 list from Out Magazine, and the inclusion of “I Should Go” on the finale of the second season of Vampire Diaries, introduced him to ever-larger audiences. His recent accolades and visibility aside, he will move back to Chicago to renew his deep love affair with the city.
The Pointer Sisters began their formal vocal training in their father’s church, and went on to achieve worldwide fame. Their 1973 debut album produced their first hit single, “Yes We

The group’s cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire” soared to a number two position on the pop charts. “Slow Hand” also topped out at the second position on the Billboard charts and became an anthem for women across the country.
Paris Bennett came to
national recognition as a contestant on the fifth season of American Idol. Bennett released her debut album “Princess P” in 2007, as well as a holiday album in 2008, “A Royal Christmas”. Bennett and her mother (Jamecia Venzett Bennett, vocalist for Sounds of Blackness) performed at the 2006 “Divas Simply Singing” AIDS benefit concert. CHICAGO SPOTLIGHT: Sukie De La Croix By Gregg Shapiro Before becoming a saint, Bath, England native St. Sukie de la Croix and made his name as a journalist in his homeland, as well as in Chicago. Through his wellregarded history column, which ran in a few of Chicago’s GLBT publications (some now defunct), de la Croix was able to finally give the community the attention it justly deserved. The culmination of his history work can be found in his book, “Chicago Whispers: A History of LGBT Chicago before Stonewall” (University of Wisconsin Press, 2012). Covering a period of almost 300 years, the book is as informative as it is entertaining. I spoke with St. Sukie about “Chicago Whispers” shortly before he embarked on an East Coast book tour. When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? I was always out as bisexual, but didn’t find myself in a live-in same-sex relationship until I was 30. To me it was no more than reaching a crossroads, taking a different path and changing hats. Please name five of your GLBT heroes. Jean Genet I have a great admiration for the French author because of his beautiful prose and the fact that he was an amoral, selfcentered, arrogant prick. I like that in a writer. A. E. Housman, the British poet because he wrote about strong muscular young 56 boi
men in a gentle, closeted and romantic way that reminds me of my roots in the English countryside. William S. Burroughs is a constant inspiration to me, not so much for his writing, but for reaching a great age and still being “cool.” Andy Warhol for being so utterly, transparently, plastic. Ma Rainey, I like my dykes sturdy, I love everything about her, from the gold tooth to the rasping voice. What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? (My book) “Chicago Whispers: A History of LGBT Chicago before Stonewall” (published in June 2012 by University of Wisconsin Press.) What are your future goals and aspirations?
I don’t plan ahead. I go from one project to the next. I’m currently writing a book about my childhood. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation? Always remember that Stonewall was a RIOT, it wasn’t signing a petition, it wasn’t lobbying politicians, it wasn’t walking up and down waving a banner, or chanting a clever slogan. Stonewall was a RIOT. Sometimes you have to kick some ass.
