en’s fall and winter fashion are almost always about layering, which makes sense considering that we’re constantly going from the brisk outdoors to more temperate indoor temperatures. This year the two major wardrobe trends are a monochromatic color palette and combining and contrasting fabrics.

Look across the pond.

The focus for outerwear this season is that of traditional English fabrics for outerwear. Normally fashion dictates that when mixing fabrics, weight and texture should match. That rule seems to be tossed out the window this year. Designers are pairing tweed, woolens and shearling with imprinted silks, superfine wools.

Military Influence

A romantic vision of military-inspired garments remain in fashion for both men and women this season. The must-have item is the greatcoat. It can be single or double-breasted, belted or unbelted. Although variety is abundant, the great coast’s hallmarks are that it have a fitted waist and should be detailed with brass buttons. Color choices here sit strongest with khaki, green or navy hues. Aviator boots with shearling are stylish, yet practical this season.

Color Outside the Lines

Major colors which designers offer for men this season are mostly dark: black, grey, brown, deep green, etc. They are practical and always look stylish. However, for those who love to stand out there are a few bright fall hues: orange, golden, red and burgundy. To dilute the darker palette yellow, ochre and a variety of beiges were used. They looked bright and a bit unexpected

Strong Suits

This season sees a slight move away from the ‘skinny boy’ suit, but that’s not to say that a boxy cut has replaced it or that slim is out altogether. Again the military influence is seen in the classic V shape; broad shoulders, a slim waist, slim trousers, a style that accents a sense of the masculine silhouette. Going a bit against trend, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein are showcasing a stylized sack suit. A sack suit features a natural shoulders cut, without any darting along the torso area.. 22 boi

Key Pieces

Cardigans are strong, but with a slimmer, more modern silhouette. Pinstriped dress slacks that are cut on the trim side, but not in the least bit skinny. Pinstripes can dress up more casual pieces or make dressier clothes look more formal. They should be impeccably tailored and pressed. Thanks to “Mad Men:, blazers have made a come-back. Most have a retro look and can add a bit of whimsy to your wardrobe. Patch pockets, elbow patches and doublesided vents are all options. Flat front twill pants are the new jeans. They can be worn anywhere and go with everything. For those of you who are a bit more flamboyant, an eighties trend is making a comeback; brooches for men. The newer styles tend to be less flashy and much more masculine-if that can be said for a brooch. Remember, you don’t have to toss out old pieces. Your personal sense of style should be about mixing trendier pieces and looks into your classic wardrobe.

Can I wear a cowboy hat with a suit?

Only if you are a cowboy…or one of the Village People. I’m talking to you, Randy Jones! As a side note to our girls; cowgirl boots and a frilly dress (barely) work in Austin, Texas, not anywhere else.

I sometimes show up at a party in a suit to find I’m the only one dressed that formally. What should I do?

Nothing, darling. When you wear a suit and tie and you look better than anyone else in the room. Don’t explain, don’t apologize. Let everyone assume that you’re on your way to, or just came from, something more important. Now if it turns out to be something super casual, such as a beer and football game party, you can always slip into the rest room and remove your tie-and shirt, depending on your physique.

What would be a good brand of pocket watch?

Philippe Patik. However, unless you plan to glance at the watch while twirling the end of a pencil-thin handlebar mustache, I’d advise against it.

I fold the ones that are the same together. I assume you mean to what should you match your socks? Socks should match the color of your pants, not your shoes. They need not match exactly. In fact, matching them too closely could look far too Garanimals-like, but they should be close.

Can I wear thick athletic socks with a pair of boat shoes?

Only if you want to be thrown overboard. Sailors always go bare ankle.

My friends make fun of me because I iron a crease into my jeans. When should pants have a crease?

You’re wound real tight, aren’t you darlin’? Only dress pants, suits and tuxedoes should have a crease. Casual pants, such as jeans and khakis are always better without. If you must iron your jeans, turn them inside out first and when you’re done carefully iron out the crease. Then get medicated.

What are the guidelines for skinny jeans?

Only when there is a chance you might otherwise be walking barefoot around water; the beach, the pool or the shower. And, for heaven’s sake, please have decent looking feet. Instead, wear a pair of low-rise canvas shoes. They’re natural and can be put in the washing machine when they start to smell like feet.

Simply this: thirty. That is the maximum age and waist size allowable for wearing skinny jeans. The rule is hard and fast. If your waist is any larger than you don’t understand skinny and you risk looking like those marshmallow Santa Claus figures we made in grade school. Anyone over the age of 30 shouldn’t wear skinny jeans either. You may have the right build, but you’ll look like you’re trying to hard.

Maybe how buttons ought to there be on a suit?

When is it appropriate to wear a pocket square?

Flip-flops. Where and when?

That’s somewhat a matter of fashion and style. Three or two-button on a suit and a one-button only on a tuxedo. Now as to which buttons to button. Only unbutton your jack when sitting. When standing, the rule for which button should be fastened are (from top): Always, Sometimes, Never.

Can I mix patterns?

If you’re asking for advice I would guess not. However, should you attempt it, make certain the different

He was a model soldier, earning the respect of his battalion. But the events of April 22, 2004, would change things forever. Bar-Lev focuses on the difference between spinning the story and setting the record straight via interviews with Tillman’s mother Donnie, his father Patrick Sr., youngest brother Richard and widow Marie, neighbors, members of his battalion members and other military officials. “The Tillman Story” is as much a tribute to the memory of Tillman, a young man cut down in the prime of his life, as it is testament to the resilience and persistence of a family who wanted nothing more than to learn the truth about the death of a loved one.

ON THE SMALL SCREEN

A musical within a movie, “The Big Gay Musical” (Embrem) takes us behind the scenes of the off-Broadway show “Adam & Steve…Just the Way God Made Them,” as well as behind the scenes of some of the cast members’ lives. Paul Daniel Robinson, who plays Adam, is a seasoned theater performer who also works at a cabaret bar called Mostly Sondheim. Inexperienced Eddie Joel Dudding, who plays Steve, is so excited about being in his first New York production that he calls his fundamentalist religious parents to share his happiness, only to have it dashed when they tell him that they plan on coming to town for opening night. The only problem is that Eddie’s not out to them. As a cinematic device, the interweaving of the play and the musical work well together, and the musical numbers a number of which include scantily clad performers. are clever. In fact, the Effie from “Dreamgirls” homage is not to be missed. Co-directors Caspar Andreas and Fred M. Caruso prove to be a successful creative team on this unexpectedly ambitious project. DVD special features include the entire 45 minute “Adam & Steve” musical, a “Making of the Big Gay Musical” featurette with outtakes and cast and crew interviews and more.

Neighborhood News

Alderman Helen Shiller (46th ward) has announced that she will not run again. Considering that she barely squeaked by in the last election no doubt influenced her decision. During her nearly quarter century as term as alderman, her ward has seen increasing gentrification despite Shiller’s efforts to stifle such growth, which earned her the nickname Helen Shiller the neighborhood killer. Although she fought gentrification she was an ardent supporter of the rights off the poor and a strong advocate for AIDS care and prevention. Two members of the GLBT community, Don Nowotny and James Cappleman have already announced their intention to run for the office.

DreamLogic Theatreworks will present a live “karaoke-style” cabaret of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at Mary’s Attic on Monday, August 23. It will feature a complete performance of the music from “Rocky Horror” and two sessions of cult favorite karaoke.
