COUPON QUEENS Many people imagine that the only folks who use coupons are white trailer-trash with a brood of snot-nosed kids. It’s true that some people do go a little crazy with coupons, they’ll use coupons for everything and will buy anything for which they have a coupon. That’s what retailers and manufacturers count on. Used correctly, however, coupons are like having an inside track to better prices. First let me start by saying, never buy something with a coupon unless you would buy it anyway. I have a cute little box that I keep on my desk. When I go through the mail I toss any coupons that I think I might use into the box. Before I go shopping I take a couple of minutes to go through the coupons and pull out those I might use. I also use this time to toss out any expired coupons. Personally, I don’t bother with coupons that don’t save me at least 20% of the purchase price, it’s just not worth my time. To increase the effectiveness of coupons, use multiple coupons for an item whenever possible, for example combine a grocery store coupon with a manufacturer’s coupon. Not all stores allow this practice, but if they do, it can mean tremendous savings. I recently used a coupon for $1 off when purchasing two of an item. The store was having a “buy one, get one free” sale. That meant that I paid less than a dollar for two boxes of cereal. Read coupons carefully. There may be some requirements or restrictions. Some coupons are very specific to certain stores, however many stores honor coupons from their competitors. Coupons are easy to find. In fact, they’re hard to avoid. If you’re searching for higherpriced items you may want to be more proactive. Instead of letting the coupons come to you via mailers, magazine and newspapers, go on line to the sites of stores your regularly patronize and get on their

e-mail list. Register to receive coupons in the mail or via e-mail notification. To avoid clogging up your regular e-mail with these notifications, open a second e-mail account specifically for things like this. It’s also good to use the secondary address when you register for contests and things like that. Grocery stores and companies frequently offer their specials, deals, and moneysaving coupons on line. As a matter of fact, some companies offer discounts and coupons only online, so keep a lookout for those online specials and search for coupon codes if they ask for one. Some of the coupon codes actually work! It doesn’t hurt to try until you find one that works. Aggregator web sites are a terrific source of information. Some of the biggest are RedPlum.com, Coupons.com, CoolSavings. com, SmartSource.com and CouponSurfer. com. The internet offers all sorts of deals, however, your local retailer appreciates your business, so watch out for their sales. There are even sites, such as HeyItsFree. net, that offer free samples and product updates. For Twitter users, CheapTweet.com and CouponTweet.com (@CheapTweet and @CouponTweet on Twitter) gather coupon codes and deals from Twitter merchants and other Twitter users. Other Twitter accounts, such as @heyitsfree, @freestuffrocks and @freenology, provide updates and news feeds on free goods. You can get updates from many of these suggested web sites through Facebook, Twitter, or e-mail subscription. Some of these sites will even send the coupons directly to your smart phone. Using coupons for big-ticket items can save you big bucks. Even a simple trip to the grocery store can provide some major savings. Using coupons at the grocery can save at least $10, and that’s money that would be better spent on a cocktail! boi

SMART SHOPPING TIPS by Anita Taylor No matter where you shop or what you are purchasing, there are ways to save money, and in this tight economy who doesn’t appreciate a little extra cash? Why pay more than you have to? Follow a few tips and you’ll never pay full price. Get to know your favorite store’s employees, ask them to alert you to sales. Some will even hold an item back for you if it’s going on sale soon. Fancy packaging usually means higher prices. Obviously, you’re not going to do the same amount of research about buying a jar of peanut butter as you would for a car, however, whether you are shopping for furniture, clothing or groceries, the same basic savvy shopping rules apply.

Do Your Research Go on-line or ask family and friends for advice based on their experience. Gather information about the seller and the item or service you are purchasing. Review product test results and other information from consumer experts. Get advice and price quotes from several sellers. Cram Fashion is offering up to 70% off on Spring and Summer items.

Decide in advance exactly what you want and what you can afford. At Moda Boutique buy one summer item, get the second item free (model to the right not included). Remember the “Rule of Three” If an item has three different ways it can be used, you will not be wasting your money.

Compare Advertised items are not always the cheapest. Check for unadvertised specials and don’t be afraid to ask for a “rain check” if an item is sold out. Larger is not always cheaper. Smaller is not always cheaper. Look at unit prices. In most department stores, sales racks are located at the back of the store. Head there first, before you are tempted by higher–priced merchandise. Try alternative shopping like searching for your needed item on craigslist, or check out thrift stores, consignment shops, warehouse clubs, yard sales, and garage sales.

Shopping on-line can result in big savings, especially if there’s no charge for shipping and a site where you don’t have to pay sales tax. That’s 10% in Chicago. Before shopping on-line look for promotion codes (aka coupon code.) Among the best sites are Plan Your Spending CouponCabin, Ebates, Don’t buy on impulse or under pressure. WebbyPlanet, Coupon Buy items before you run out of them. Chief, RetailMeNot, Buxr Buy at clearance, or sale price, instead of and CouponSmarter. regular price when you must have the Select bathing suits 20-50% item. Stock up when prices are low. off. Shop Defensively 1) Check out a company’s complaint record at the Better Business Bureau’s web site. 2) Get a written copy of guarantees and warranties. 3) Insist that any extras you are promised be put in writing. 4) Get the seller’s refund, return and cancellation policies. 5) Watch the register. Retailers do not update cash register scanners with updated prices. If you think the price displayed isn’t right, speak up. 6) Pay by credit card. If you have a problem, you can dispute a charge made on your credit card.

Through the end of Oct., 7 Diamonds’ full-price menswear is 20% off at Akira Men’s in Andersonville

Invest in the (Flea) Market by Anita Taylor With the way our economy is going, you’re almost certain to get a better return on your dollar at a flea market than in the stock market. Savvy shoppers can score big if they know what they’re looking for. You don’t need to have an encyclopedic knowledge of antiques and collectibles; you just need patience and a good eye. Successfully shopping anywhere requires a certain amount of planning and preparation, and even more so when shopping in non-retail environments. Whether you are shopping at a flea market, thrift shop or hitting garage sales there is a basic ABC that will guarantee success:

• Arrive early • Be prepared • Cash rules All professionals hit yard sales and flea markets early because they know that the best stuff is snatched up quickly (usually). On the flip side of this is that near the end of the day, you may be able to make a better deal. Arriving at a thrift shop soon after it opens is also a good idea, especially if you’re hitting one during a half-price sale. Before venturing out to shop, plan ahead. If you are going to a number of places, assemble the information on your stops. Call ahead to get tips on parking, admission fees (if any), hours, and availability of food and drinks. Take a bottle of water, especially on a hot day.

Shop with a list. If shopping for furniture, measure the spaces where you plan to place the furniture. Also, remember to check the width and height of your doorways. Getting a classic mid-century modern piece at a steal doesn’t matter if you can’t fit it in your apartment. Check the dimensions on the opening on your vehicle. Measure your floor areas ahead of time if you’ll be looking for rugs. Take some shots of your place with your cell phone, so you can picture how something will look when you get it home. Some people like to make a quick circle of everything, and then go back to what interests them. Others start in one corner and proceed slowly through each booth. Some go to an information booth to see if vendors are organized by item (china, furniture, jewelry, etc.), and then go the areas that interests them. Whatever your strategy, have a list of your favorite items so you can stay focused, use a small notebook to remind yourself where you saw items that interest you in case you want to go back. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Consider clothing with lots of pockets (for sunglasses, pens, notebooks, maps, tape measure, etc.) Take a light jacket, hat, umbrella, sunscreen, or whatever will help you be comfortable. Take a large shoulder tote filled with plastic grocery bags and bubble wrap. The bags and bubble wrap can store and protect your purchases and a shoulder bag frees up both hands while shopping. You may also consider a wheeled cart or bag to make lugging those heavy items back to your car easier. (hurry.. turn the page to continue reading this exciting article!)

boi 13

Make certain that your cell phone is fully charged. If you have a smart phone, you can use it to do an Internet search for items you find, or look up artists of original pieces you find. I was at an estate sale and found an original watercolor thrown in with a bunch of framed posters, etc. I looked up the artist, and picked up a piece worth $5,000 for $10. Look at things with a creative eye. Notice how items are displayed to get creative ideas that might be adapted to your own home. Think innovatively so items meant for one use can be adapted for use in another way Even if something isn’t “perfect” look beyond the rough exterior to see the bones of a piece. Can you paint it or apply a tile mosaic to cover flaws. Would that lamp base be perfect if you found a new shade? If you’re shopping for clothing examine each piece carefully, look for stains, tears or pulls in the fabric, check zippers. Wear a basic tank top and close fitting shorts so that you can try items on easily. Finally, hold the fabric to your nose and smell it. If you smell mildew or mold, pass on it, no matter how perfect it appears. Before packing up any clothing, turn it inside out and reverse hems whenever possible to be sure that you’re not bringing home unwanted “guests”. 14 boi

If you’re shopping for larger ticket items and you’re bringing a car or truck, prepare a small basic tool kit (screwdrivers, hammer, pliers) in case you need to remove legs, mirrors from dressers, etc. You might also want to pack the blankets to wrap delicate purchase, rope, heavy twine or bungee cords to tie items to the roof of the car, a waterproof tarp to wrap or cover items tied to the roof. We all know cash talks! Always ask, “What’s your best price for cash?” Cash is often a great bargaining chip, it saves the vendor from paying a credit card fee and from worries about bad checks. Don’t be afraid to negotiate, but be respectful. Instead of saying, “$50 is too much for that,” instead say, “I really want this, but the highest I can go is $35.” Pad your wallet with lots of small bills, leave all the extra stuff you usually carry in your wallet (library card, photos, etc.) at home. For items under $100, I always pay cash, for bigger ticket items, many flea market vendors will take charge cards. It’s a good idea to charge big-ticket items, and then if there’s a problem you can contest the payment through your credit card company. Not every outing is going to result in finding treasures, but the hunt is part of the fun. If you’re not enjoying yourself, no amount of savings will be worth it.

MAN’S COUNTRY CELEBRATES 40 Man’s Country is one of the “grand old” bathhouses you’ve heard about. Celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year, its reputation is legendary. The structure was built in 1907 as a lodge hall for a fraternal/social organization. From its inception, it had a somewhat sordid story. Acquired by Chuck Renslow and Dom Orejudos in 1972, the building underwent a major renovation to bring it into code compliance and add the things that make a bathhouse fun. During the renovation workers discovered the remains of a speakeasy and gambling casino. Moveable walls hid shelves once lined with slot machines, card rooms contained back staircases allowing patrons quick access to other parts of the building. A basement vault was turned into the steam room. Then, when working on the renovation of the second floor Music Hall, formerly used as a meeting room for the fraternity, workers discovered a human skeleton under the stage. It turned out to be one formerly used in a medical school that was used as part of the fraternal organization’s initiation ceremony. For many, years until its theft, it was on display in the “Pit” at the old Gold Coast leather bar at 501 N. Clark St. In the 19702 and ‘80s, the Music Hall was known for top name entertainment. Contrary to popular belief, Better Midler never appeared at

Man’s Country. However, the roster of stars was quite stunning... The Village People, Boy George, Wayland Flowers and Madam, Charles Pierce and 1930 fan dancer, Sally Rand played the room. You’d be hard pressed to name a disco diva who had not appeared on the Music Hall stage at some time in their career, Thelma Houston, Viola Wills and Pamela Stanley to name a few. One of the most outrageous of those stars was Divine, he performed his last show there before his death. From 1987 through 1992, the room served as the Bistro Too dance floor during which many of those divas made return visits. In 1990, this room gave birth to the stripper troupe “The Chicago Meatpackers” and served as their home base. The Meatpackers eventually came to be known as the Stripper BOYZ and continue to dance on Friday and Saturday nights at Man’s Country and joined from time to time by some of the biggest porn stars. Throughout the hallways of Man’s Country, you’ll find artwork by the artist “Etienne”. Together with Tom of Finland, Etienne is considered one of the two great masters of gay leather art. Etienne’s real name was Dom Orejudos (one of Man’s Country’s founders). The subterranean wet area has been designed to look like the under belly of Paris. Man’s Country is open 24/7. CHICAGO SPOTLIGHT: OWEN KEEHNEN Interviews with leaders in Chicago’s GLBT community By Gregg Shapiro When it comes to words, it would appear that there’s nothing that Owen Keehnen can’t write. A well-regarded journalist, Keehnen’s writing has appeared in a variety of GLBT publications, both regionally and nationally. Keehnen has also collected his work in a few books, ranging from his interviews with porn stars (the “Starz” series) to those with GLBT authors and celebrities (“We’re Here, We’re Queer”). His fiction has also been published in various outlets, including anthologies, and Keehnen’s most recent novel “The Sand Bar” was published by Lethe Press. When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? I always knew I was gay, but I had steamer trunks of Catholic baggage, so knowing and coming out were very different things for me. Coming out to others came when I gained the courage to be myself and that came from having a sense of community. That’s why I attach such crucial importance to having gay neighborhoods, bars and organizations. All of that saved me. It didn’t give me my identity, but it allowed me to start becoming myself. That’s why I made “gay bar community” a core theme in my new novel “The Sand Bar”. Please name five of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. Writing the bios for the Legacy Project, I have just researched dozens so this will be tough. I’m going to make all these posthumous. James Baldwin, because he inspires me as a writer. I reread “Giovanni’s Room” at least once a year. Barbara Gittings because her level of activism and contribution to GLBT causes is unparalleled. Christine Jorgensen for saying, “This is who I really am” and having the courage to do it all under such public scrutiny. Cole Porter for being so damn sophisticated. Willem Arondeus, a Dutch Resistance Fighter in WWII, a failed artist who along with two gay comrades blew-up the Nazi’s Citizen Registration Building in Amsterdam. He was captured and put before the firing squad, with his final words he wanted it known that he was a homosexual so that people would know 22 boi

that gays are not cowards. That story always moves me. Those are my five for today. What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? This ties into my heroes answer. To me anyone who has paved the way, in whatever capacity, for those who follow is a hero. I think my biggest contribution is as a sort of translator. I want to convey to future generations what GLBT life has been like and show some of how it has evolved. I want to serve as a reminder and make it very clear that all the advances and freedoms we enjoy today were won by GLBT folks who fought, struggled and sacrificed because they believed in the future of this community. That is a profoundly beautiful thing and that spirit needs to be celebrated. They deserve to be remembered and they deserve all our respect. It makes me crazy when people pooh-pooh or belittle the idea of the GLBT community because to me they are dismissing all those people and that heritage of contribution. What are your future goals and aspirations? Currently I’m co-writing a biography of local activist Vernita Gray and finishing a humorous novel called “Young Digby Swank”. My big goal after those projects are completed is to write a great gay love story set in the vaudeville world with Chicago’s Iroquois Theater fire of 1903 as the backdrop and culmination of the novel. I love historical fiction and that era is my favorite. I’m drawn to the sort of seediness of the theatrical life of that period and how it was in many ways the underground of “respectable society.” I’m also a romantic who enjoys research and I’m fascinated by tragedies so it seems a lot like a natural fit. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation. Don’t take any of the freedoms we have for granted. Historically speaking, being gay has been okay before, but all it takes is a hostile administration or two, some zealots and a few homophobic laws and we’re back underground and in the closet with our lives criminalized once again. My advice is to keep moving forward but never forget the past. And for God’s sake - vote!

Relationship & sex Advice

Rub-A-Dub

I don’t usually go to the tubs, but I was feeling especially horny one afternoon a few months ago, so I decided to go for a couple of hours, get off and go home. Wouldn’t you know it, after years of hoping to meet someone through friends, at the bars or other social events I met the man of my dreams on a Saturday afternoon at the baths. He’s everything I want in a partner, handsome, smart and the sex is mind-blowing. I’ve never connected with anyone else the way I have with him. He calls me every day as soon as I get home from work, and we talk for almost an hour. We’ve been meeting at the baths on a regular basis, mostly weekends. I want to take this relationship a step further, but he is content with things the way they are. What can I do?

COPE

What you exhibited is most likely “roid rage”. Very few men, even with a highly regimented work out, can develop the muscles you have described without the help of steroids. Many men who take large amounts of steroids will develop severe acne, usually on the back and chest and tend to have severe mood swings. No doubt, he is a bit embarrassed by his behavior and/or blames it on you. My advice would be to move on, if he hasn’t responded to your attempts to open a dialogue with him, there’s nothing more you can do.

Stunned on Southport

I’ve been out and proudly gay since I was 15. In the ten years since I’ve come out I’ve had a few boyfriends and more than my share of onenight stands. Everyone knows I’m gay and it’s no big deal with my family or at my job. Almost all RAD of my friends are gay guys my age. Last week I Let’s examine what you’re experiencing. You met went out for drinks with some folks from work a man on a Saturday afternoon at a bathhouse. to celebrate a co-worker’s birthday. At the end He calls you every day as soon as you get home of the night, I was waiting for a bus and a car from work, and you talk for about an hour. He pulled up. It turned out to be a new co-worker comes into the city on the weekends to meet you. My guess is that you’re involved with an attached who had been at the party. She asked where I man or one who just enjoys NSA sex. I’d be up front was going and offered me a ride home. To make a long story short, obviously she didn’t realize with him about this. If what I suspect is true, you I was gay and made a move on me. I’d had a need to make some decisions. Are you ready to accept being “his piece on the side”, for lack of a little to much to drink and, next thing I know, better term? If he’s attached, are you comfortable we’re in her bedroom having some of the most knowing that he’s cheating? From the tone of your exhilarating sex I’ve ever had. I woke up early letter, I would guess not. That means that you the next day and made a dash home. I’ve never have to make a decision, either accept it for what been attracted to a woman before. I’m freaked it’s worth, or stop seeing him. out I’ve never had sex with a woman before. I’ve always been a proud gay man. Am I even gay?

Confused on Paulina & Elston

I’ve been dating the most beautiful man in the world for a few weeks. He’s got an eightpack and pecs to make an underwear model green with envy and his biceps are about as big around as my thigh. We’re interested in the same kind of books and movies and we get along great. After about three dates, we finally had sex. I was a little grossed out by the fact that he shaves his pubes completely. He also has really bad acne on his back. I didn’t say anything about it the first few weeks we were together, thinking maybe it was a temporary thing. Last night, as we were spooning after sex, I asked him if he was aware there was medicine which could help with his acne. He flew into a rage and made me leave his place. Now, he won’t return my phone calls, texts or e-mails. I only meant to help. What can I do to make him forgive me?

SOS

Relax, you’re still gay. If a vegetarian eats only one slice of bacon their entire lives that doesn’t make them a carnivore. Sexual orientation is a continuum, very few people are exclusively hetero or homosexual. You needn’t freak out, most of your friends, even if they find out about your “indiscretion” won’t care. You should be up front with the woman with which you had this experience. If your co-worker puts the moves on you again, explain to her that, while you certainly enjoyed the experience, it’s not one you wish to repeat. Unless of course you do, and that’s all right too. ______________________________________
