My tan is fading as faster than my memories of stumbling down Halsted during Market Days. It won’t be long until I’m back to my raw chicken colored skin and wishing for one last blast of warm weather. I was on the east coast just before Labor Day checking out the scenes in D.C and Philly. I’m calling it my “Death & Destruction Tour”. I managed to be in D.C. for the earthquake , then arrived in Philly just as Joey Vento, the creator of the Philly Cheesesteak, died. As I was heading back home, Hurricane Irene was just making landfall. I swear it wasn’t all my fault! Thankfully, my good buddy Ace Magyar was holding down the fort here at BOI. He used his powers of persuasion to get everyone on staff to get their articles in on time. In this issue, Gregg Shapiro gives a sneak peak on what movies are coming up this season, while Vic Trollah does the same for albums and concerts. As for myself, I did a little round up on what’s happening on the dining scene in Chicago and also spill the beans about the secret menu items available at your favorite fast food spots. I do love me some Popeye’s, especially after a few cocktails. We’ve also got the lowdown on some particularly interesting theater projects coming up in the next few months. Erasure’s ‘Tomorrow’s World’ tour arrives in Chicago September 16 and 17 at the Congress Theatre By Vic Trollah

One of the most successful and globally adored partnerships in pop, Erasure may have been synth-pop pioneers in the 1980s and 1990s, but they never rest on their laurels. Unlike many of their former chart peers, Andy Bell and Vince Clarke have consistently avoided the creative death knell of nostalgia tours. Both are huge fans of contemporary electronic music and club sounds. They remain a vital, forwardthinking force in 21st century pop. After selling 25 million albums and scoring more than 40 hit singles, Clarke and Bell are back with their 14th studio album, ”Tomorrow’s World”. It is a masterpiece of warm-blooded electro-pop and emotionally charged electro-soul that sounds as glossy, contemporary and exciting as any of their younger charttoppers. With synthetic melodies and electronic beats as dominant as ever, Erasure’s timeless anthems of hedonism and heartache are set to strike a universal chord once more.

The combination of Erasure’s timeless song writing and Frank’s lush, heavily processed studio sound makes for a gloriously fertile musical mix. Andy and Vince explode with energy on danceable love missiles such as “Be With You” and “Fill Us With Fire”, euphoric declarations of state-of-the-art electro-pop. As with all Erasure albums, “Tomorrow’s World” contains bittersweet introspection and sophisticated melancholy too. The gorgeous break-up anthem “What Will I Say When You’re Gone?” and its staccato musical framework contrasts nicely with the sumptuous relationship post-mortem “When I Start To (Break It All Down)”, which already sounds like a future stadium-filling classic. Andy unleashes the full blast of his diva talents on “You’ve Got To Save Me Right Now”, a mighty electro-gospel hymn built around a whirling waltz-time rhythm.

But for all the heartbreak and uncertainty on “Tomorrow’s World”, sunny euphoria and romantic optimism are still the brightest colors in Erasure’s musical rainbow. Even when the hedonistic rush is tinged with desperation, as in the doomed-diva chronicle “A Whole Lotta Love Run Riot”, operatic vocals and soaring melodies are Returning from a four-year sabbatical, Andy still shooting for the stars above. Summer concerts such as Lollapalooza and Pitchfork are fine, but there’s something to be said for the solo concert experience. This fall we have a bumper-crop of great shows coming our way. In addition to the long anticipated Erasure concert (see my feature story). Plan for a lot of albums to drop in November, just in time for holiday giftgiving. Among the artists with album titles TBA with release dates TBA are Rhianna, Adam Lambert, Taio Cruz, Florence + The Machine and Nickleback. In the meantime, there are plenty of other concerts and album releases to entice you.

It doesn’t matter whether or not a fast food chain advertises that you can “Have it your way” or not, you know the those places are set up to have it the same way all the time. That is unless you know the secret code for off-menu items. Many of your fast-food and restaurant chains have “secret” menu items. Since these specialty dishes are not widely known, not every server or order take may be aware of them. You can always ask them to check in the kitchen and, if all else fails describe the dish and see what happens. Arby’s “Wet Fries” is an order of fries smothered in cheese sauce. The “French Dip” has been removed from Arby’s menu, but can still be ordered. Burger King has a veggie burger, but what most folks don’t know is you can order a “Veggie Whopper” as well. “Frings” will get you a split order of fries and onion rings. For the big appetite, ask for the “Suicide Burger”, four meat patties, four slices of cheese, bacon and special sauce. The “Rodeo Burger” tops a patty with onion rings and bbq sauce. The “BK Club” is the chicken sandwich with bacon, tomato and cheese. Dairy Queen’s Blizzard is a favorite but if you ask for a “Chocolate Chip Blizzard” they add the chocolate shell usually used on the dipping cones. A “Banana Split Blizzard” combines all of the basic banana split flavors blended together. Dunkin’ Doughnuts “Turbo Hot Coffee” gets you an extra shot of espresso in your coffee order. KFC offers a Canadian favorite north of the border, but you can get it in the states, too. Ask for a “Poutine” and you’ll get a delicious hot mess of fries, fried cheese curds and gravy.

McDonald’s franchises in the South can often whip together “Biscuits and Gravy” but only when they’re serving breakfast. Another breakfast secret item is “Chicken and Waffles”, a McGriddle sandwich with chicken in the middle. A “McKinley Mac” is a Big Mac made with quarter pounder patties while the “Big McChicken” is a huge sandwich in which the bun is replaced by two chicken patties. Ask for a “Neopolitan Shake” layers of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Get an “Apple Pie McFlurry” by purchasing a pie and have it blended into your McFlurry. The “Land, Sea, & Air” is beef patty, chicken patty, and filet-o-fish all piled high onto a bun. Starbuck’s will make you a “Biscotti Frappuccino” if you purchase the biscotti. Asking for a “Short” is a cheaper, slightly smaller than tall beverage. Wendy’s “Barnyard” is a spicy chicken sandwich with ham, bacon and beef separated by cheese and if you order a “Value Crispy Chicken Club” you’ll get a reduced price Crispy Chicken sandwich with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo added. by Rick Karlin The air is beginning to turn crisp and there’s a touch of auburn in the trees. It won’t be long before Fall will be here in full force. In Chicago that means a return to the heartier Midwestern fare for which we’re famous. As the street festivals begin to dwindle, there are still plenty of places for hungry folks to congregate. One of the last outdoor food events, Oktoberfest, actually comes near the end of September. One of the most renowned is “Oktoberfest Chicago” at St. Alphonsus. The event returns for its 11th year of seasonal revelry on Sept. 23-25. Whatever the weather this event goes on because it takes both inside and around the grounds of St. Alphonsus at 1429 W. Wellington. Add another local eatery to those sending out a food truck. Everything’s all set at Lillie’s Q in Bucktown. They’re just waiting for the paperwork to clear before they send out their 24-foot-long truck. The “Lillie’s Q Meat Mobile” will sell pulled pork and pulled chicken sandwiches on brioche. The cost will be $10 per sandwich (that includes the side and sauce). I’m already droolin’ in anticipation of Lux Bar’s (18 E Bellevue) five new prime burgers to their menu. New burgers joining the lineup include the Surf & Turf Burger; a lobster patty, arugula, heirloom tomato, chive-lemon mayo, on a sesame bun and the Blue Cheese Burger; stuffed with cheese, heirloom tomato, on a pretzel roll. Rosh Hashana is the new year for the Jewish calendar and one of the highest of the holy days in the religion. And, as with most holidays it invokes a lot of traditional fare. It seems as if every restaurant offers meals for Christian holidays, so it’s nice to see Lawry’s Prime Rib taking care of my chosen people with a prix fixe traditional Rosh Hashana dinner. Lawry’s The Prime Rib invites guests to celebrate the Jewish New Year with their Prix Fixe Traditional Rosh Hashanah Menu on Sept. 28 and 29. 14 boi

Lawry’s will be serving such favorites as challah bread, apples with honey, Bubbe’s chopped liver, matzoh ball soup along with such entrée choices as prime rib (of course, nu?) and a nice piece of grilled salmon. After the meal it is traditional to enjoy some desserts to “sweeten” the upcoming year. They’re offering apple pie, and a bunch of dairy desserts that my grandmother would kvetch about, crème brulee or a choice of ice cream sundaes. I can hear grandma now, “What dairy after eating meat? What are they meshugga? I’ll just have a bissel.” At the fourth annual “Chefs on the Grill” benefit for the Special Olympics on Wednesday, Sept. 14 local chefs participate in a cooking competition and you get to eat the results. The Plaza at Park Grill in Millennium Park hosts as each chef creates a dish of their choice. Attendees taste samples of each dish and vote for their favorite. Guinness Oyster Fest, the popular Roscoe Village food and music fest is being expanded to two days: Friday evening, Sept. 16, and Saturday, Sept. 17. Fresh oysters, Guinness brew and a music lineup heavy on popular ‘80s and ‘90s acts will be on the menu for the annual fest at Roscoe and Damen. Sometimes a weak economy works to your benefit. Hi, my name is Jim. I live in Los Angeles, but I received a scholarship to attend the School of the Art Institute... that’s how I ended up here. The Art Institute is an incredible school and Chicago is an incredible city, minus the sub below temperatures. However, between school and studies, I’ve been indoors most of the time I’ve lived here. This summer was the first chance I’ve had to explore the city. I have to say that some of the beaches here rival those in California. I’m really happy to be chosen for the cover of BOI Magazine, it’s quite an honor. I usually read BOI online since I don’t get out to the bars much, it’s my favorite source to keep in touch of what’s going on (or what I’m missing, LOL). A few of my friends laughed when I told them that I was going to apply to be a cover model. They say I’m too skinny because I don’t work out. Skinny jokes about anorexia hurt the same as fat jokes. Like others, I learned to deal with it. I tried to gain a little weight so that at least people think I looked healthy, but then I gave up trying to please others. Now I just try to be the best at who I am for myself, regardless of what others say or do. Since then, I’ve been a much happier person and I encourage anyone with weight issues to be themselves. I may be too skinny for some, but plenty of other folks like guys that are on the lean side. My whole family tends to be on the thin side, so it was never much of an issue until I got older. My parents taught me to be the best person I could and not to worry about what anyone else says.

What are my hobbies? I would say porn, but that would get me in trouble! My favorite thing to do is draw and sketch, basically anything having to do with drawing people, except painting. I can’t even paint a wall! I find the diversity of people fascinating. The fact that there is an endless supply of faces, features, expressions and character, makes it a really good hobby. I guess you could say the same about stamp collecting, LOL. My favorite movie this summer was Transformers. The fact that it was filmed in Chicago is really cool and I had a chance to see some of the action filming downtown when I first arrived in Chicago... So seeing it on the big screen was a real treat. The Ram’s got another one of its salacious after party contest planned for Friday, Sept. 23. The “Bare Butt” contest awards $300 in cold hard cash to whoever shows the best naked tush. Just make certain that you don’t have any extra baggage like the bears in the Charmin commercials… Speaking of butts, and I do like to, Hydrate’s got another Manhole party planned on Saturday, Sept. 10. For our younger readers, Manhole was a bar located in the same space as Hydrate. It was a pretty outrageous place and Manhole was a euphemism for.... oh go ask an old-timer. The party, “What Are You Into?” refers to how gay men used to wear hankies to indicate their sexual preferences, ask an old timer about that too. Except For When It’s All About Erasure Chicago’s getting all excited about the upcoming Erasure concerts at the Congress Theater. Since it’s a two-night concert, you can bet the boys in the band will be celebrating after the show at some of the bars. If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, stop in at Downtown on Thursday night, Sept. 15 when they’ll be having a ticket giveaway promotion for the concert… Make certain to get to Spin on Friday, Sept. 16 for the official Erasure after-party with very special guest DJ Andy Bell! There’s not even a cover if you flash your concert ticket stub. Take It (Half) Off I hear that things are getting pretty wild at Kit Kat on Tuesday nights. It seems that all martinis are half off on that night and that some of the customers are half off their stools after a couple of the kiddie pool-sized cocktails and half out of their clothes after a couple more, sounds like fun!… On the other hand, sometimes it’s better when things are 100% off. Celebration of the Life of Christina Santiago The community activist and Howard Brown employee was killed in the Indianapolis State Fair stage collapse on August 14. She is survived by her wife, Alisha Marie Brennon, who was injured in the collapse. SEPTEMBER “For The Boys”, through Oct. 16. Marriot Lincolnshire presents the world premiere of a new musical based on the Oscar nominated movie starring Bette Midler and James Caan. “The Kid Thing” by Sarah Gubbins, through Oct. 16 at Chicago Dramatists. Chicago Dramatists and About Face Theatre joining forces to present a fascinating play about two lesbian couples getting together for a dinner party. Before the hummus hits the table, the unexpected news of an impending pregnancy manages to rock both relationships, especially when Jacob, an old college friend and potential sperm donor enters the picture.

“Cloris! A One-Woman Show” Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Dorothy Menker Theater in Palos Hills. Whether you know her as the crazy grandma on “Raising Hope” or as Phyllis Lindstrom from “Mary Tyler Moore” or as Frau Blücher in “Young Frankenstein”, or the impressible imp on “Dancing with The Stars”, there are few actresses that have fully embraced such crazy characters as Cloris Leachman.

OCTOBER “Follies”, Oct. 4 through Nov. 6. Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical gets a rare fully staged production at Chicago Shakespeare’s Courtyard Theater. “Alien Queen: The Concert”, Oct. 28 and Dec. 10. Scooty and Jojo bring back their campy musical parody tribute to the 1979 “Alien” and 1986 “Aliens” films featuring songs Queen.

“Jesus Camp-The Musical” runs through Sept. 24 at The Cornservatory, 4210 N. Lincoln. A musical parody of the 2006 documentary about a charismatic church camp for kids.

“Beauty of the Father”, through Nov. 20. Pulitzer Prize-winner Nilo Cruz’s play in which a love triangle develops when an American woman travels to Spain. At Chicago Center for the Performing Arts.

“Clybourne Park” through Nov. 8. Steppenwolf kicks off its season with Bruce Norris’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play which takes on two separate afternoons, 50 years apart (1959 and 2009). In a nod to “A Raisin in the Sun”, Norris takes a hilarious look at what happens when home becomes a battleground.

“Wishful Drinking”, Oct. 4 and 5. Carrie Fisher, the actress best known as Princess Leia from “Star Wars” shares her experiences with addiction, a rocky marriage to singersongwriter Paul Simon and life with her mother, Debbie Reynolds at the Bank of America Theater.

“Classic TV Re-Runs! The Season of Sin” Third Tuesday of the month, through May 15 at Mary’s Attic. Actors perform hilarious staged readings of classic TV shows in this series which kicks off on Sept. 20 focusing on the sin of infidelity with Oprah’s “Men Who Live On the Downlow,” segment. Other shows skewered that night include the CBS special, ‘When Women Cheat”, “Beloved Infidel” episode of “Frasier” and a fiveminute version of “Inside Edition: Cheaters”

“Areola Jones and the Temple of Boobs”, starting October 27. Gorilla Tango Theatre presents an all female cast in a burlesque parody of the “Indiana Jones” adventure flicks.
