ISSUE 18.11

CELEBRATE ON LAND OR SEA DESTINATION WEDDINGS • WEDDING PLANNERS

No sooner do I get home from my summer vacation, than we’re working on our travel issue. Life works in mysterious ways. Maybe it was because of the massive civil union ceremony held in Millennium Park earlier this summer, but marriage and honeymoon trips have been on my mind. So our travel issue focuses on that. Just to clarify; we’ve focused on locations where you can actually get married, not register a domestic partnership or have a civil union. Right now that’s limited to a few states in the U.S. and a handful of countries. I’ve always thought that the true test of whether a couple is compatible is to take a cross country driving trip. There’s nothing like being locked in a car together for hours on end to test the strength of your relationship. To that end, Gregg Shapiro gives us a look at a couple of foreign films in his “Screen Savor” and Ace Magyar answers some travel related issues between couples. My husband and I have evolved into perfect travel companions. He doesn’t fly, but he doesn’t mind driving for hours on end. I’ll drive for a few hours then we switch and I crawl into the back of the car where we’ve flipped down the back seat and installed a foam mattress. I take out a book or watch a DVD, but always end up falling asleep and waking up at our destination. If I don’t have the time to drive with him, I often fly to our destination and he picks me up at the airport. It’s great breezing through security because all you have is a messenger with a few items. I feel just like George Clooney in “Up in the Air”. If only I looked like him. Bon Voyage,

Rick

by Anita Taylor Whether you’re planning a honeymoon or just a regular vacation, nothing can beat a cruise when it comes to convenience. All you need to do is pack and get to the ship, after that it’s simply a matter of deciding what activities you’d like to experience each day. Feeling lazy? Lay by the pool and read a trashy novel. Need a work-out? Most ships have well-equipped gyms, offer classes in everything from yoga to aerobics and have tons of athletic activities scheduled every day. Most often, all you need to do is sign up and show up.

Along the West Coast, many Alaskan cruises start, end or stop in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, where there is no waiting period between applying for the marriage license and receiving the license. In addition, couples can pick up their marriage license at a number of locations near the ships’ ports of call. A limited number of cruises to Hawaii depart from Vancouver. Occasionally these are repositioning cruises which are often quite inexpensive. Couples can get married in Vancouver then spend their honeymoon cruising to Hawaii.

Most cruise lines will also help coordinate a celebration of any sort. If you’re planning a destination wedding, a cruise is an excellent option. Depending on your budget you may choose to pay for your guests or ask folks if they’d like to join you at their own expense. Choosing this option should warrant a “no gifts, please” note with the invitation. After all, you’re basically asking folks to pay for their portion of the wedding. Your guests should know that you’re not expecting anything more from them.

On the East Coast, many cruises originate in New England making getting married in Maine or Massachusetts an option. Or, head north of the border for a Canadian wedding in Nova Scotia. Although, Nova Scotia usually has a five-day waiting period, application for a waiver is available ahead of time through the vital statistics office.

One of the most convenient countries for a gay or lesbian cruise wedding is Canada. With no blood tests and no residency period required, getting married in Canada is appealing. Here are some of the best wedding cruise options for same gay couples. boi

Disney advertises that same sex wedding parties may take advantage of the company’s special wedding packages, including having a ceremony. However, since Disney’s ships are registered in the U.S., the ceremonies won’t be legally binding. It would be better to have the marriage performed elsewhere and hold the reception on a Disney Cruise or theme park. The high-end “Fairy Tale Wedding” package,

which starts at $4,000 per wedding, includes a ceremony at one of the parks’ marriage pavilions; Disney costumed characters at the reception; and a ride in a horse-drawn, glass-enclosed carriage through Disney properties. If you’re considering a trip abroad, you might opt to bask in the Tuscan sun and be pampered like the ancient gods and goddesses with a vacation at the Terme di Saturnia Resort. Located in one Italy’s most picturesque regions, the luxury resort features 140-guest rooms and suites. The “Pride Honeymoon Package” offers a spa experience and is priced at about €1,200 (about $1,650 U.S.) Included in the package for two are four breakfasts, massages, facials, reflexology treatments, unlimited use of the spa’s thermal pool, waterfall and Roman bath, a guided morning hike,

use of the gym and a reserved deck chair and sun umbrella in the pool’s park. For more visit the resort’s website www.termedisaturnia.com. If you prefer the Amalfi Coast and Sicily, the Ragosta Hotels Collection, has put together a “Rainbow Getaway” honeymoon package, available at the Relais Paradiso and Hotel Raito on the Amalfi Coast; and LaPlage Resort in Sicily. The offer is only available through the Ragosta Hotels Collection website and includes drinks at checkin, daily breakfast, access to spa facilities, complimentary massages and a private romantic dinner. Package starts at €330 per room, per night ($450 U.S.). For more information, go to www.ragostahotels.com. Rates are based upon availability and are subject to change. boi

“So you’re getting married! Congratulations. Among other things, that means you’re probably about spend more money on a new dress/suit/outfit than you ever have before. That’s OK. What you wear will affect how you feel that day, it will be immortalized in pictures (yours and other people’s), and if it’s very bad or very good it will be talked about, especially if you’re a woman. What the bride (or brides) wear is one of things wedding guests remember the best, along with food and music.

Natural fibers last longer, feel more comfortable, look better, and cost more than manmade ones. Avoid polyester (omnipresent in the traditional bridal market) and go for silk (dresses) or wool (suits). Off-the-rack clothes (including bridal) are required by law to have a label declaring their fiber content; if you’re shopping someplace where there are no fiber labels, be suspicious. There are lots of alternative places to get clothes. Shop vintage stores, call the local fashion design school to find budding designers, look online for mail-order tailoring services. Just remember: buyer beware!

“Dresses can range anywhere from $300 for a department store cocktail dress to $60,000 for one designed by Ms. Wang herself. Before you spend that chunk of change, it’s a good idea to “If you’ve decided to have your outfit customacquaint yourself with a few facts about clothes: made, here are some things to keep in mind: Buying your wedding outfit is not like buying a new sweater: give yourself enough time to consider all the options. If you’re having something custom-made or shopping in a bridal salon, start at least six months before the event date. If you’re buying off the rack in a department store or from a men’s clothier, three months is usually sufficient. Remember that you need to coordinate at least with your spouse-to-be, and often with a whole wedding party. On top of that, custom-made clothing and wedding garments sold at retail are usually not returnable, so you want to make the right choice up front.

Custom clothing will be totally one-of-a-kind, it will fit perfectly, and it’ll be produced in the U.S. (i.e., not in a sweatshop). Decide in advance how much that’s worth to you, and be honest with your clothier about your budget. In Chicago, custom-designed dresses can start anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500, while custom-made suits can start anywhere from $600 to $4,000. Most clothing makers will do a consultation for no charge. Once you’ve committed, you’ll put onethird to one-half of the price of the garment down up front.

Planning a wedding involves a lot of details. Add to that juggling the logistics of getting married and having your celebration in another city and it becomes a full time job. It’s no wonder then that many people opt to use the services of a wedding planner. Our cover models this week, both named Pete, are newlyweds. They got married in Provincetown over the summer in a small ceremony on the beach attended by about two dozen friends and family members. After the ceremony the entire wedding party went to the Lobster Pot for lunch and then on a sail around the cape. “We’re really a couple of guys with simple taste,” Pete the younger told me. “Some big catered party just isn’t our style. It was more important to us to have the people in our life who mean the most to us, with us on that day. My mother and grandmother were both there, as well as my sister and her girlfriend.” He saw my eyes widen. My mother hit the jackpot, she had two kids and both of us are gay.” “His mother is the greatest,” said the elder Pete, “She treats me as if I was her own child. My family died in an accident when I was young, so it’s great to have another mother figure at this stage in my life. I can’t say enough about how wonderful Pete’s family is. I’m lucky to have married into such a welcoming group. His mother always jokes that she now she has two sons, Pete and Re-Pete.” “It doesn’t get confusing with both of having the same name because my family has always called me Petey anyway and when we’re not with my family our friends all call Pete by his nickname, which is Mary. No, I’m kidding, he’s always gone by the name Buddy.” “After my family died I lived with some distant relatives, my aunt’s husband was a bit of a drinker and he could never

remember my name, so he called me Buddy and it stuck. It’s also a name folks remember, which is great since I have my own landscape architecture firm. “ “My major in college was industrial engineering. I was looking for a summer job and answered an ad Buddy placed in a local paper when he was looking for an assistant. After my first couple of weeks I decided to switch his major to landscape design.” “I thought he was adorable, but didn’t approach him for a date until the end of the summer. I didn’t want to start something with an employee. Petey had to make the first move.” “I think he wanted to see how hard I would work once I married in to the company.” boi 21

From Jerusalem to Thailand By Gregg Shapiro

The Jerusalem in Haim Tabakman’s award winning film “Eyes Wide Open” exists in a world unto itself. Streets and buildings are as ancient and unstable as the fundamentalist rituals of the Orthodox Jews that populate the Jerusalem neighborhood. Shortly after devout Aaron reopens the kosher butcher shop that was run by his late father, he meets itinerant Yeshiva student Ezri. Ezri, who was tossed out of his previous Yeshiva, has come to town to be with a male lover who rebuffs him. In need of help, Aaron hires the inexperienced Ezri. He also gives Ezri a place to stay, in a room above the butcher shop. Aaron, a devoted husband and father, doesn’t quite know what to make of Ezri. Aaron is distant and removed, dedicated to the study of Torah. Ezri is expressive and creative, carries around sketches that he has done. Convincing Aaron to leave Jerusalem, they drive to a spring where Ezri disrobes and enters the water, completely at ease in his own skin. The more modest Aaron undresses, but leaves on his boxers which he takes off only after he is in the water. At Sabbath dinner, with Aaron’s wife and children, Ezri is like a ray of light in the drab setting. Back at the butcher shop, Ezri becomes Aaron’s apprentice. A forbidden sexual tension develops between them, and when Ezri attempts to kiss the butcher, Aaron asks him to restrain himself. He considers the shared development of attraction to be a challenge and it is Aaron’s mission to resist and overcome it. Of course, we all know where that will lead – a passionate kiss in the meat locker. Soon, the two men are having sex on a regular basis. Religious thugs (no kidding), self-described “morality police,” visit Aaron at the shop, advising him to distance himself from Ezri the “sinner.” Rumors about Ezri abound and Rivka becomes suspicious. Aaron continues to be threatened. And in spite of the fact that Aaron credits Ezri with making him come alive, he is forced to make a choice. 22 boi

Tabakman alternates between being heavy handed (lots of water imagery) and artistically inspired (fascinating use of reflections), and the film’s conclusion is sure to unsettle many viewers. However, the performances make this a film worth watching with, what else, eyes wide open. Don’t expect to come away from “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” with a deeper meaning of life, yours or Uncle Boonmee’s. Leisurely paced, at the very least, gay Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul received the Palme d’Or at Cannes for this film in which the dying Uncle Boonmee entertains both the living and dead, who help him through the transition from this world into the next. Released from the hospital under the watchful eye of Laotian caregiver Jaai, tamarind and bee farmer Boonmee is visited in his country home by sister-in-law Jen and nephew Tong. Before you know it, they are joined at the dinner table by the ghost of Boonmee’s wife and Jen’s sister Huay as well as the Monkey Ghost of his son Boonsong, with the glowing red eyes. In his final days, Boonmee comes to terms with the wrongs of his past, ranging from abandoning the search for Boonsong when he went missing to killing too many bugs and communists in his lifetime. In other words, karma is a bitch and Boonmee, who considers his kidney failure to be proof, has accepted that fact. But he makes the most of the end, communing with his hired help in the fields and trekking into the woods and through a cave. This is where past life memories and mythology intersect, and where less patient viewers might give up the ghost. But for those willing to go with the flow, “Uncle Boonmee” can be visually dazzling (in the ugly Princess and talking catfish sequence, for instance), if ultimately puzzling.

We’ve all been there. You finally get through security at the airport and you suddenly realize you don’t have a gift for your out-of-town friends or relatives you’re going to visit. You know how it is; Chicagoans crave those local treats that you just can’t get anywhere else in the world. There’s no need to panic. Hidden amongst the franchise and chain restaurants at the airports are a few outposts of legendary local food purveyors. And better yet, these places can pack the stuff so that you can throw it in the overhead. Make certain to order something for yourself since that little bag of five peanuts is not going to hold you for a six-hour flight.

by Ace Magyar Sometimes things work out in mysterious ways. I decided to go through my files and see if there were any questions from folks that I had put aside due to space restrictions or whatever. Just as I began my (pardon me while I brown-nose a bit) handsome and intelligent editor, Rick Karlin called and asked me if I had any advice column stuff relating to travel. Having just gone through my files I knew that I had. It must have been kismet.

her packing habits as a fault. Sit down before you go on your next trip and explain to her that while you respect the fact that she likes pack extensively, you prefer not to. Then say that she’s welcome to pack as much as she wants but that you’re not going to help her with her luggage, nor share in the cost. Then don’t help or pay, no matter what. Perhaps when she realizes what a financial and physical burden she’s put on herself (and by extension, you), she’ll change her habits. If she doesn’t, then it’s her cross (or suitcase) to bear.

Pierced in Pilsen

White Knuckle Flier

I recently got a “Prince Albert” piercing and just found out I have to go on an unexpected business trip which will require me to fly to numerous cities. I’m worried about going through security. Is there anything I can do, other than removing the studs, to make going through security less embarrassing?

PIP

You can request a full body scan rather than walk through the metal detectors. Believe me you won’t be the first person they’ve encountered with piercings. After all, hundreds of the folks in town for IML last spring came via air travel. You may get a pat down or even a physical exam, keep in mind though that the guy doing the pat down may be more embarrassed than you, and if not, you may get a date out of the situation.

I’ve been going out with this great guy for about a year and a half. He’s asked me to go him with him for Thanksgiving to meet his family in Puerto Rico. I am scared to death of flying, but I’m afraid that if I say that I can’t go, he’ll think I don’t like him. The last time I flew (12 years ago), I gripped my friend’s arm so hard that it was black and blue for a week. I don’t want to get on the plane and have a melt down, nor do I want to dope myself up on tranquilizers. In case there’s a problem I want to be alert. What can I do?

WKF

I’m certain people have pointed out to you that flying is safer than driving a car. However, in a situation with fears as great as yours rational explanations aren’t worth much. There are classes to help people overcome their fear of flying. I’m Miffed at Midway assuming you’ve either tried one of these or don’t When my girlfriend and I travel, she always over- wish to. The best approach to this is to explain packs. I prefer to travel lightly while she’ll bring your situation to your boyfriend. If you have two large suitcases on a weekend get-away. We enough time, you might opt to drive to a port city almost always have to pay excess luggage fees. and take a cruise ship that stops in Puerto Rico.
