BOI’S LIFE It’s time for that great gay holiday, Halloween, an event so fabulous that we devote two whole issues to it. We’ve decided to focus on drag in the first Halloween issue and follow that up with more mainstream costumes in the issue that comes out on October 21. Even when I was a little kid I loved Halloween even more than Christmas. Perhaps it stems back to one of the first Halloweens I can remember. I had the measles and could only watch all the other kids walking up and down the street. I remember being heartbroken; drama queen that I am I probably sat in the window with a single tear crawling down my cheek. You can bet that the next year, I did Halloween with a vengeance. After that every year I’d spend weeks planning costumes with my mother. In 1st grade I was a cowboy, the next year I was a policeman, then a sailor and this was all before I heard about the Village People. No wonder my mother wasn’t surprised when I came out.

Editorial Contributors When I was in high school, I wore my girlfriend’s cheerleading outfit while she wore my football jersey, pants and shoulder pads. I looked better in that cheerleader skirt than she did. To be fair, she looked better in the football gear than I did. She’s a big ol’ lesbian now. Drag and Halloween have a long history together. Until recently it was against the law to dress in clothing of the opposite gender. Halloween was traditionally the only time that the laws weren’t enforced. In the pre-Stonewall days most big cities had Halloween drag balls that would take over large hotels. It’s an interesting piece of our history, and particularly timely since October is Gay & Lesbian History Month. Whether you’re a seasoned drag queen or a virgin you’re certain to find something in this issue. I’ve talked to DQs far and near and got a list of some of the best shopping places and some fabulous make-up tips. So go out and have a ball, but remember to tuck your balls out of sight.

ne of the most popular events in Chicago’s GLBT community, Night of 100 Drag Queens will take place October 19 and 20, Tuesday and Wednesday at Sidetrack. The 19th edition of the event benefits Equality Illinois.

Night of 100 Drag Queens started out as entertainment for local activist (and BOI editor) Rick Karlin’s birthday party. Drag Queens Paula Sinclaire and Vikki Spykke each did a couple of numbers atop a piece of plywood placed on some beer cases. Each year the entertainment became more and more elaborate. Eventually, the party grew so big that it was organized as an official fundraiser. Karlin and Sidetrack’s managing partner, Chuck Hyde, produced the show. For the first few years the beneficiary changed each year. Among the original beneficiaries were Gay & Lesbian Parents Group (now Rainbow Families) and GLSEN. For the past 15 years the event has been a benefit for Equality Illinois. The producers of the event estimate that Night of 100 has raised at least $500,000 during its run. In the beginning the emcees were Paula Sinclaire and Vikki Spykke, followed by Honey West, Russ Ranier, Dominick Hamilton-Little and Rick Karlin in his persona as Charity Case. Karlin still occasionally performs in the show, attempting to maintain his ranking as Chicago’s second oldest drag queen. Bradley Thomas first hosted Night of 100 Drag Queens in 2005. Since then, his drag persona, Missex, has been a dominatrix, a transformer, a goddess of nymphomania, a baby doll, a character from Where the Wild Things Are, a gangsta, a sex goddess, a Chinese mistress, Alice from Wonderland, even a glammed-up Foozie! Missex Thomas first landed the gig after appearing in the show two years running performing as a Sidetrack staff member. His association with Equality Illinois and the fact that he was a bartender at Sidetrack were integral in him being asked to host: “I hadn’t done a whole lot of drag, but I had acting training and done a lot of emcee work. One thing that Sidetrack management didn’t know when they approached me to possibly host was that I had been a singing ringmaster in the circus for two years! I was already very comfortable on the microphone; it was the heels that took some getting used to…”

“I love working with such a great group of performers who are totally committed to their craft. The back-stage spirit is upbeat and fun! We know we are all here to entertain and raise a truckload of money for a great cause, Equality Illinois. “Night of 100 Drag Queens” is truly a team effort. Chuck Hyde and the Sidetrack staff, along with the Nick Holmberg, Bill Stadt, as well as the technical crew that comes in specifically for this show are what have grown it into the extravaganza it is today. Tedd Greenwood, who helped produce the show for years, brought a refined theatricality and the idea of thematic shows to Night of 100. I helped pitch the ideas of games and more audience involvement. Night of 100 has become more than a show—it’s an entire experience from the moment you walk in the door, it’s like you are in a very different, magical place. A place where even I can be a pretty lady! “Every year there are new kids performing in drag for the very first time, back to back with established queens who’ve been around the stage, or around the block. This mix of professional and amateur performers is what keeps Night of 100 fresh. “ Teri Yaki returns to co-host with Missex again this year. Tickets for the show as well as the pre-show VIP reception are available at Sidetrack. Performing at Night of 100 has opened a lot of doors for Thomas: After his first year, he was asked to emcee the International Mister Leather Contest (a gig which lasted 4 years); it also led him to discover a new great passion, standup comedy. He is currently co-producing Sidetrack’s new weekly stand-up show, Laugh Track. You can become a “Liker” of his comedian page Bradley Thomas on Facebook, and catch Bradley at Sidetrack’s amazing new free weekly show, Laugh Track, on Thursdays at 8 at Sidetrack.

ressing as a drag queen is all about making a statement. Heavy makeup, dramatic hair and outrageous outfits are necessary if you’re going to be a drag queen. It’s not as easy as it looks, though. Here’s a step-by-step guide to giving good face. 1. If you plan to draw in your brows, or if your eyebrows are thick, coat them with numerous layers of glue. Apply as many layers as needed, allowing 3-5 minutes drying time between layers. The glue stick is great for covering zits, as well. 2. Shave any facial hair. When you are done, shave again. (Don’t forget to trim ear and nose hair, as well.) 3. Apply moisturizer to your skin and allow it to absorb 5 minutes. 4. Apply liquid foundation; use a makeup sponge or your fingers to generously apply the foundation to your face; don’t forget the ears, behind the ears and the neck. 5. Apply concealer to the areas that need a little extra help, such as under your eyes or over any blemishes. 6. Apply loose powder generously, using a puff or pad. Press the powder firmly onto your brows. For the rest of your face, you want a smooth matte finish. This is like priming a wall for paint. 12 boi

7. Use your blush brush and generously apply a bold-colored blush to the apples of your cheeks, the tip of your nose, the tip of your chin and jaw line. 8. Contour your face using a shade of eye shadow slightly darker or lighter than your base powder. Darker powder makes parts recede, lighter powder makes areas more pronounced (use dark along the sides of the nose and a strip of white down the bridge to make a nose seem thinner.) 9. Try on the false eyelashes before you apply the adhesive. If they are too long, carefully trim the ends along the spine until they fit your lashes. Apply the adhesive to a Q-tip and then “paint” the spine of the lashes. Set aside, glue side up while you apply your eye make-up, (remember which is left and which is right). Waiting for the glue to get tacky, makes it easier to apply the lashes. 10. Draw in your brows using an eyebrow pencil. If you are unsure where to draw the brow, begin the line along the top of your natural brow line. You will be covering the actual brows with eye make up. (continued on pg. 15)

11. Apply an eye-shadow base (white makes your eyes pop) to your eyelid and between the lid and the brow (or where you are drawing your brow). From there generously apply eye shadow on the lid, in the eye crease and from the lid to just below the brow. The general rule is medium dark on the lid, very dark in the crease and lighter under the brow. Repeat these steps until you achieve your desired look. Remember, too much is a good beginning. 12. Apply the false eyelashes. Carefully apply the spine of the lash to the edge of your upper eyelid. 13. Apply a coat of mascara to your lashes. This will help them adhere to the false eyelashes. You can wait a few minutes and apply additional layers of mascara as needed. Apply mascara to your lower lashes as well. 14. Apply eyeliner to the edge of your eyelid (on top of the spine of your false lashes). You may extend this line past the outer edge of your eye for an Egyptian look. You may also add eyeliner to the edge of your lower eyelid. 15. Line your lips with lip liner. If your lips are small, line them slightly outside the lip line to create fuller lips. 16. Apply your favorite lipstick inside the lines you just made with lip liner. You may either blend the liner into the lipstick or leave the line dark. It’s a matter of the effect you’re going for. For a glossier look, apply lipgloss on top of the lipstick. Look in the mirror and adjust your make up as needed. 17. Put on your wig and outfit and look fabulous.

Drag Queen Top Hints Hint #1: To get a closer shave, let your beard grow for a day. Hint #2: If you tend to sweat, apply Mitchum roll-on anti-perspirant to your face and scalp about 20 minutes after shaving and at least 15 minutes before applying my make up Hint #3: After applying your lipstick, put your finger in your mouth and draw it our slowly, like you’re sucking a…well you get the idea. This will pretty much assure that you don’t have lipstick on your teeth. Hint #4: To lock in your look and “set” your face, take a can of Aqua-Net, close your eyes and apply 1-2 light layers on your face, while keeping an impassive look (don’t scrunch your nose.) Allow a few minutes between layers. Your make-up will remain in place all night. t’s always fun to go out and explore new places, or to discover that one of your favorite hangouts has a new look. Fall is a perfect time to check out some of the new and improved clubs around town. Parlour

6341 N Clark 773.564.9274 parlouronclark.com

It’s been a long time since a new GLBT club has opened in the Rogers Park/Edgewater neighborhood. Parlour on Clark, just south of Devon, promises to add a touch of Parisian glamour to the area. Crystal chandeliers cast a diffused light on the exposed brick walls. Walls of textured aluminum line the dance floor An attractive hand painted bar and gilded antique mirrors let you know that attention to detail is the concept in play. Parlour on Clark is alredy a popular spot in a neighborhood with an ever-growing LGBT population. It provides a refined counterpoint to the rough and tumble Touché and Jackhammer, its closest neighbors. Owners Jennifer Murphy (formerly owner of Girl Bar) and Nikki Calhoun want Parlour to be a space where men and women feel equally welcome. The event programming offers an eclectic mix of new and retro, male and female, dance and sports. For example, as a prelude to the weekend, “Lipstick Thursdays” will focus on the girls, Fridays play host to “Medusa’s Parlour” bringing back the legendary party boy from Sheffield in the ‘80s with drink specials and DJ Teri Bristol. Saturday nights the dance floor will be filled for “Grind” with DJ Luis M and drink specials priced from $3-$5. On Sundays the big screen TVs will be tuned to sports, with $4 pitchers of domestic beer and free munchies at the bar.

D.S. Tequila Company

3352 N. Halsted 773.697.9127 dstequila.com

The newest dining venue from the owners of Minibar provides a much-needed spot for drunken food on the Halsted Strip. D.S has its own private label tequila shipped from Mexico for Margaritas. The ‘ritas are available on the rocks or frozen. Too often frozen drinks use cheap flavored sugar concentrates, but at D.S. the drinks are made with fruit puree. A mug will run $6-$7 and pitchers are $24-$28. With flavors such as Passion Peach, Wild Berry, Coco Loco and Bumpin’ Bananas, as well as the classic lime based original you’re certain to find something (or is that someone?) that goes down easily... For those who prefer an

ice-cold cerveza, drafts are available in mugs, pitchers, or even towers for those looking to really make a night of it. The menu is focused on Mexican street fare and burgers, with a number of forays into fancier fare. Stop in quick, while the weather is still decent enough to enjoy the outdoor garden area. The main dining room is a bit cramped and you’ll want to sit back and enjoy those margaritas to their fullest.

Cocktail

3359 N. Halsted 773.477.1420 cocktailbarchicago.com

Cocktail a long-time favorite on the Strip has gotten a facelift. Not any of the employees, they’re all youthful beauties and have many, many years before they’ll need any work done (had to clarify that, don’t want any arsenic in my martini). No, we’re talking about the recent remodeling job that increased the size of the bar by converting the former Piehole space into a clubby lounge area. In addition to the new lounge area, Cocktail has installed beautiful sidewalk seating and added a kitchen. The new outdoor garden features an incredibly varied menu. The garden is open Sunday through Friday until 10 p.m. and Saturdays until 11, for at least a few more weeks.

Spin

800 W. Belmont 773.327.7711 spin-nightclub.com Spin has always boasted an incredibly diverse clientele. You’re certain to be comfortable whether you’re gay, straight, not sure or just not saying. There’s no shortage of inspired fun going on between the regularly scheduled events such as drag bingo and shower contests to performances by nationally known artists. Spin recently underwent a huge expansion that tripled the club’s size. There are two dance floors, 4 full service bars and several spacious lounge areas to choose from. The recent patio addition has proved a popular gathering spot, especially on weekends when the “Meat and Buns” party dishes out free food.

LGBT films, ranging from documentaries (James Rasin’s Candy Darling doc “Beautiful Darling” and Michael Stock’s “Postcard to Dadd”) to comedies (“Loose Cannons” from Italy) and dramas (“Sasha” from Germany, “Family Tree” from France, “For 80 Days” from Spain, “Amphetamine” from Hong Kong, the Canadian feature “Heartbeats” and Man At Bath,” starring French porn star Francois Sagat). The 2010 Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema, Oct. 2131 (chicagofestivalofisraelicinema.org for a complete schedule), features the gay-themed movie “Eyes Wide Open” (New American Vision) which takes place in a Jerusalem neighborhood populated by fundamentalist Orthodox Jews. Shortly after devout Aaron (Zohar Shtrauss) reopens the kosher butcher shop that was run by his late father, he meets itinerant Yeshiva student Ezri (hot Ran Danker). Ezri, who was tossed out of his previous Yeshiva, has come to town to be with a male lover who refuses to return his phone calls. In need of help at the shop, Aaron hires the inexperienced Ezri. He also gives Ezri a place to stay, in a room above the butcher shop. Aaron, a devoted husband and father, doesn’t quite know what to make of the expressive and creative Ezri. A forbidden sexual tension develops between them that leads to a passionate kiss in the meat locker. Soon, the two men are having sex on a regular basis. Religious thugs (no kidding), self-described “morality police,” begin to visit Aaron at the shop, advising him to distance himself from Ezri the “sinner.” Aaron is forced to make a choice. Director, Haim Tabakman alternates between being heavy handed (lots of water imagery) and artistically inspired (fascinating use of reflections), and the film’s conclusion is sure to unsettle many viewers. However, the performances by Danker and Shtrauss make this a film worth watching with, what else, eyes wide open.

On the small screen Keeping up with “The Joneses” (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment/Echo Lake) is harder than you think, especially when they are a fabricated clan planted in an upscale suburban neighborhood by a faceless consumer corporation to “do some damage.” But that’s precisely what happens when the Jones family—father Steven (David Duchovny), mother Kate (Demi Moore), son Mick (Ben Hollingsworth) and daughter Jenn (Amber Head)—moves into one of the biggest houses on a block full of newly constructed mansions for a little stealth marketing. Under the watchful eye of KC (Lauren Hutton), the family parades around in high-priced duds, drives an array of shiny new Audis, adorns themselves with expensive jewelry and has a home decorated in the latest in design trends, complete with all of the cutting edge toys and gadgets technology has to offer. All they have to do is maintain the façade (in spite of the fact that Steven and Kate sleep in separate bedrooms and Jenn wants to bed Steven) and get their well-to-do neighbors to take note of their goods and go out and spend, spend, spend. All goes well until, little by little, the cracks begin to show. Less well-off neighbors Larry (Gary Cole) and Summer (Glenne Headley) do their damnedest to keep up, until tragedy strikes. High-schooler Jenn is sleeping with a married man. Mick misinterprets signals from a classmate and ends up getting beaten up pretty badly, leading to his coming out as gay. At turns funny and serious, writer/director Derrick Borte’s “The Joneses” does a respectable job of commenting on consumer culture and its negative impact on society. Moore and Duchovny are pleasant to watch together and bring a level of glamour to the movie, while supporting players Headley and Cole prove that they can hold their own. DVD special features consist of deleted scenes.

Getting Your Rocks Off

Virulently anti-gay Atlanta pastor Eddie Long, who was sued last month by four young men alleging that he pressured them into affairs, addressed members of his congregation at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. He didn’t exactly deny the claims; while at the same time comparing himself to David, saying he, “… still has ‘five rocks’ to throw at Goliath.” No word on what those rocks were and why there were five of them, but before he compares himself to David, he should remember there are rumors about the relationship between David and Jonathon. Tale a look at these two pics of the reverend, one as he resents himself at church and another he took for an on-line profile, and I think no further discussion is needed.

Bar Briefs

Berlin never does anything the usual way. For proof you need look no further than its Halloween weekend events. On Saturday, Oct. 30 Berlin and Bacardi present “Devil’s Night” with Big Top Jojo’s “Towering Show of Wonder” and on Sunday they’re “Block Rockin’ Halloween” with a 90’s Night… Jackhammer’s Oct. 15 Flesh Hungry Dog Show will be a “Zombie-A-Go-Go” event with The Moves, Lettercamp and special guests The Revelettes, Chad Hawks, Susan Hooper, Kelsey Zukowski, Dave Losso and Coye Vega… Roscoe’s takes a break from the “RuPaul Drag Race” circuit on Thursday Oct. 28 to present some other folks from Logo, Julie Goldman and Johnny McGovern, stars of the “Big Gay Sketch Show”… Save some dough by stopping in at Oak Park’s Velvet Rope on Tuesdays for $6 martinis, margaritas and pizzas. Have some cheap food and some cheap drinks and chat with your suburban neighbors.

Speaking of Neighbors

Head up to Andersonville on Friday, Oct. 8 for “Night of 100 pARTies” the kick-off for Andersonville Arts Week. Up and down Clark Street there will be all kinds of art exhibits and other fun. It’s being held in conjunction with BEHIV’s upcoming art therapy show at the Center On Halsted.

Just Shoot Me

Have you noticed the ad campaign for NOH8 (No on Proposition 8) featuring celebrities with their mouths taped shut? You can be photographed for the campaign as well. Los Angeles-based photographer, Adam Bouska, is

bringing the NOH8 Campaign studio to the W City Center Hotel, 172 West Adams, on Monday, Oct. 11. A photo shoot is scheduled from 4 until 7 p.m. and organizers hope to accommodate everyone in line. The cost to be photographed is $40 per person for individual shots, $25 per person in groups. The organizers ask that you arrive camera ready and wear white. The NoH8 temporary tattoo and silver duct tape will be provided. Funds raised by the NOH8 Campaign will be used to continue promoting and raising awareness for marriage equality and anti-discrimination through NOH8’s interactive media campaign.

Benefits Galore

Fall is traditionally a time for fund-raising events and this year is no different. Minibar hosts a “Happy Hour with Lambda Legal” on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 7-9 p.m. The event includes an open bar and passed hors d’oeuvres for $25. That’s kind of a steal considering the price of cocktails nowadays. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit Lambda Legal, the nation’s oldest and largest organization fighting for equality on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people and those with HIV. Tickets will be available at the doo…Gerber/Hart’s annual benefit, “Making History: Center Stage” on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Swedish American Museum Center will feature Alexandra Billings as the keynote speaker.

Stage Business

The folks at Hell in a Handbag are at it again. “The Rip Nelson Halloween Spooktacular” runs Fridays and Saturdays until Nov. 6 at Mary’s Attic. The high concept performance art piece takes place in 1976, and semi-legendary actor and comedian Rip Nelson desperately needs to make a comeback. In the play he has called in a every favor ever owed to him to compile a star-studded list of guest stars such as; Joan Crawford, Kate Smith, Bob Dylan, Ann Miller, Phyllis Diller, Charo and Bea Arthur… After too long a wait it’s the return of “The Scooty & JoJo Show” cult hit “Carpenters Halloween” on Friday Oct. 22 at Circuit. The spine-shivering send-up of John Carpenter’s slasher classic is set to classic songs of The Carpenters. There are only 8 performances scheduled through Oct. 31. This is a must-see folks!
