There seems to be no shortage of haunted houses in the Chicago area. Some are well known because they advertise widely on television, radio and in the press. But, how often do you get what you pay for? Forget about the hype, we’ve polled some of the top web sites devoted to haunted houses (you’d be surprised how many there are) and came up with a BOI’s Best list for houses of terror. The “Fear Factor” rating is not an indication of quality (the venues listed are all among the best) but as to how frightening the experience will be. Some folks want to have the $#*! scared out of them, others prefer to be mildly startled. Check online for hours and dates, and the closer you get to Halloween the more lines you should expect. Fear Factor Rating: 1-5 Skulls (5 being the Scariest)
11th Hour Haunted House is located on the grounds of
Berthold’s Garden Center, 434 E. Devon in Elk Grove Village. With a large enough area of land to technically be considered a farm, Eleventh Hour is able to do something that most Chicago-area haunts can’t do, and that’s bring together urban and rural styles of haunting together.? Composed of four different attractions, each with a different style, Eleventh Hour is one of the most complete haunted attractions within miles of Chicago. Fear Factor:
Asylum Xperiment at The Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park terrorizes you from above and below inside the largest haunt in Chicagoland, with more 100 creatures, zombies and freaks. Experience a 40 foot “Tunnel of Terror”, a multi-level graveyard with jumping, pounding, quaking effects. The Asylum Xperiment beckons you with The House, Blackout and Armageddon, its three unique attractions spread out over 45,000. Fear Factor:
Basement of the Dead in Aurora is
located in the abandoned Walker Laundry building where; in 1964, the boiler exploded maiming and scalding two workers. They never returned to work and rumor was they had vowed to get even. Under the streets and building were sewer lines and tunnels, a year or so after the explosion people from the laundry started to disappear and body parts were found in the river near the drainage pipes. Fear Factor:
Dream Reapers Haunted House in
Melrose Park is more than 14,000 square feet of sheer terror encompassing 22 rooms, 40+ animatronics, more than 40 actors and actors and, something rarely duplicated in the industry; scents based upon the theme of the room. DreamReapers was rated the best haunted house in Illinois for three years in a row. Fear Factor:
Disturbia at any other time of year, golf
course looks like an oasis of green, its white dome ready to shield any golf aficionado from too much wind or snow. In October, the park district turns it into a 15,000 square foot haunted house, an expanse of more than 25 different scare zones utilizing more than 50 actors. Fear Factor:
Fear City Haunted Attraction at 8240 N. Austin, Morton Grove is the result of an Emmy Award winning design team promises. It promises shock and awe with motion picture quality sets and Broadway level theatrical make up and costumes. More than 40 live characters will roam the stages driven by thrilling audio, lighting and video effects that are sure to unnerve even the bravest of souls. A Midway themed exhibit with a dizzying spinning fuselage, a tour of the dark underbelly

of the Windy City, and a grotesque meat packing slaughterhouse culminates when visitors pass through the mouth of a giant head and are swallowed alive. Fear Factor: The Haunted Infirmary at Bartonville Insane Asylum blends a healthy mix of fact and fiction, as it unleashes the horrors within the grounds of the old Peoria State Hospital. The tour takes place in and around the Pollak Building, which served as the tuberculosis ward until the hospital closed in 1972. The tour welcomes visitors as a patient by the medical staff. From witnessing the shock-therapy room, to checking-in on procedures in-progress, and even spending time in the patients’ living room where they are allowed to roam freely and talk to themselves. Halfway through the tour, some of the patients that are meant to stay locked away stage a breakout, with visitors caught right in the middle! (It is quite the epic scene.) Fear factor:
Realm of Terror Horror Experience in Round Lake Beach has been named one of Top 3 attractions by HauntedIllinois.com and rated as a Top 10 attraction by HauntedHouseChicago.com.
It is the result of collaboration between professional filmmakers, sound designers, makeup artists, set designers, carpenters, engineers, inventors and artists. The end result is one of the greatest and most notorious haunted houses in the nation. Fear Factor:
Hannibal the Cannibal, The Clown, and the Demon of Darkness, are waiting around every corner. After visitors finally find their way out of the mighty walls of Statesville, they descend into the hallowed halls of City Of The Dead must find their way above ground. Fear factor:
Spook Hollow/M.C.Manor in
Marquette Heights offers a highly detailed haunted mansion after which visitors find themselves deep within the woods of Spook Hollow. A leisurely walk through the not-so-peaceful woods filled with zombies, chain saw killers and everything else turns the leisurely walk into a full-on panic sprint! Fear Factor: If you’d like to create your own sexual fantasy house of fun and (maybe a little) fear, check out the room available at the leather-themed B&B, Ashland Arms, at ashlandarms.com.

The big event for Halloween is the NortHalsted Parade which, as the Pride Parade did for the first time this year, heads south on Halsted. Stepping off at Waveland and heading south to Belmont the parade will follow a longer route this year, making it easier to get a good viewing spot. The evening kicks off with registration from 4-6 p.m. at Circuit Night Club. Hosting the contest and parade this year is the ubiquitous Miss Foozie, with entertainment from Chicago Spirit and the Chicago Fire Brigade. If you haven’t picked up your costumes yet, head over to Ragstock on Belmont, Fantasy Costumes on Milwaukee or any Brown Elephant location. Many of the bars and clubs are kicking things off early, making for almost a week-long party. Sidetrack celebrates the 20th anniversary of “Night of 100 Drag Queens”, founded by our own editor Rick “Charity Case” Karlin, with two shows: Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 23 and 24. Miller Lite is the presenting sponsor and the event benefits Equality IL. This year’s theme is “Goddess-A-Go-Go”. A funny thing happened on the way to the 20th Anniversary Edition. It looks like Rome will fall again! The queens have gone all out this time, and you simply have to see what they have in store. To make it even more fun for everyone, pull out that old toga you’ve got stashed in your closet (or linen closet). General admission and early seating reception tickets are available from Sidetrack’s bartenders or you may order on line at either Sidetrack’s or Equality Illinois’ web sites. Cocktail’s Halloween lineup is fierce. It kicks off with “Powder Your Wig” on Friday Oct. 26. Channel your inner Marie Antoinette or George Washington and enter the powdered wig contest for a chance to win a $500 private soiree at Cocktail. Enjoy the contest while you sip decadent, French inspired cocktails and enjoy the spins 14 boi
of guest DJ Chris Spinazzola and, as always at Cocktail, sexy go-go boys working up a sweat. Saturday brings a Versailles-themed “Let them eat cake” costume contest with $2500 in cash and prizes. The French Revolution takes place on Sunday with $1 well drinks and $9 pitchers of vodka cranberry, lemonade or Long Island or bottles of champagne. During the parade, arrive early for the best seats for the parade. Circuit Mom presents Circus Revolution “Evil Under the Big Top” on Oct. 27 at the House of Blues with DJ Eddie Martinez. As usual the particulars are hush-hush, but given Circuit Mom’s track record, it promises to be among the best parties of the year…Downtown Bar celebrates with “Studio 440” a disco style costume contest with $500 in prizes and $6 Stoli cocktails on Saturday the 27th… Hydrate goes all “Dirty Pop” on Saturday, Oct. with a costume contest and dancers all night. On Halloween watch the parade on the bar’s video screens… Hamburger Mary’s hosts Hell in a Handbag’s revival of the show that started it all for them, “SCARRIE The Musical,” the unauthorized “Carrie” parody/homage, through Nov. 10. The Ram presents “SIN” for service industry professionals Thursday and Friday, Oct. 25 and 26… Steamworks kicks things off with DJ Harry Cross on Friday, Oct. 26, followed by a double header of “Bears Bath and Beyond” and “Cumpocalypse” with DJ Jim Belanger on Oct. 27. Following the parade on Halloween, they’re hosting a post-parade f#ck party to help take off the chill… Kit Kat holds its annual “Rocky Horror Picture Show Brunch” on Sunday, Oct. 28. Diva Madame X will perform songs from the cult classic, and the film will be shown on seven large screens. Guests are encouraged to arrive dressed as the best Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Magenta, Riff Raff or other campy costumed character for the chance to win a $100 cash prize. Kit Kit will offer a special meatloaf entree, which will be available in addition to the full brunch menu and bottomless mimosas, bloody martinis and sangria. This listing is far from complete and includes information we had as we approached deadline, we’ll have more events in our next issue.

An interview with Winnie (Irwin Keller) of The Kinsey Sicks By Gregg Shapiro
Overflowing with sassy parody lyrics, dragapella foursome The Kinsey Sicks’ election-themed “Electile Dysfunction” (kinseysicks.com) couldn’t have come at a better time. I spoke with founding Kinsey Sicks member Winnie (aka Irwin Keller). Gregg Shapiro: For the uninitiated to the wonderful wiggy world of The Kinsey Sicks, please say something about the genesis of the group’s name. Winnie/Irwin Keller: Ah, the name. Now that might have been a terrible mistake. It’s a riff off the famous Kinsey Scale, of course, with a nod to our sick sense of humor. So it’s a slight chuckle for those who get it. And an enormous “huh?” for those who don’t. GS: How many Kinseys have been in the group since it was formed in 1993? W/IK: We have very low turnover in the Kinsey Sicks, except in bed. We have to turn over Trampolina every couple hours because of her snoring. As for staffing, Ben Schatz and I are still originals. Jeff Manabat, who plays Trixie, has been with the Kinsey Sicks for 9 years, and Spencer Brown, who plays Trampolina, for 4. GS: Have the members of the group always been gay and is that a requirement? W/IK: What? The members of the group are GAY??? GS: The Kinsey Sicks have what looks like a grueling tour schedule. How many days of the year the group on the road? W/IK: We’re on the road maybe 100 or 120 days a year. It is indeed quite grueling, although we have it down to a science. Makeup, costumes, wigs, sound equipment, merchandise, all folded just so and packed just right in our Mary Poppins carpet bags. GS: As was the case with the previous Kinsey Sicks discs “Electile Dysfunction” has a clever title. What is involved in the process of coming up with titles for the albums? W/IK: We have a process we call “brainstorming” in which someone comes up with an idea and everyone else instantly and heartlessly shoots it down. Finally we run out of time and pick the first thing that comes to mind. GS: Also like other Kinsey Sicks discs, “Electile Dysfunction” makes good use of parody lyrics in several songs. W/IK: Ben Schatz is our primary parody maven. His
22 boi
parodies are so successful because he’s so demanding of himself in the process. He won’t settle for anything that doesn’t parallel the original as closely as possible. It must have the same rhyme scheme, including internal rhymes. In fact, the parodies that we think are the best are the ones that are so close to the original - but with a huge change in meaning - that people are stunned that they never thought of it themselves. GS: The Kinsey Sicks have been singing in a style that predates TV shows such as “Glee” and “The Sing Off.” What do you think about the sudden fascination with a cappella singing? W/IK: Yeah, a cappella is a big deal now thanks to reality TV. So is drag, thanks to reality TV. So why the fuck aren’t we famous? GS: Why do you think that a majority of Republicans are so obsessed with the LGBT community? W/IK: Are they? I hadn’t noticed. Although we were in Tampa during the Republican National Convention, and Grindr was looking awfully busy. GS: The Kinsey Sicks will be performing at The Mayne Stage in Chicago in October. What does it mean to you to be performing in your hometown? W/IK: For me it’s a thrill. Chicago is in my bones. My family has a long Chicago history. I grew up in Niles, then lived in Hyde Park for 8 years. Going to Mayne Stage is especially fun for me, when I was very little, my Grandma Minnie, who lived around the corner on Estes, I have some profound childhood memories of that very block. In any event, it’s always great performing in Chicago. I get to see a lot of old friends and fellow activists, plus a million cousins (and I barely exaggerate here). GS: What can people look forward to at the show? W/IK: Not refunds, that’s for sure. For those who haven’t seen the Kinsey Sicks before, you’re in for a roller coaster ride of quick wit, sharp political humor, scary audience participation, glorious four-part harmonies and endearing if eccentric characters. We get to share our economic platform (“Sell the Poor”), discuss our plan for education and tout the most important reason for choosing us (“Vote for Me: I Wasn’t Born in Kenya”). It’s a terrific show, if I do say so myself. Hope we’ll see you there! The Kinsey Sicks perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Mayne Stage on Oct. 19. For more information on the group, go to kinseysicks.com.
Farewell Sahara
One of the stories rocking the gay entertainment world is of the untimely death of Sahara Davenport, a former contestant on “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. An official statement obtained by BOI Magazine, confirms that the 27-yearold, whose real name was Antoine Ashley, died from heart failure on Oct. 1, at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Sahara Davenport
Ashley’s boyfriend of six years and fellow drag entertainer, Karl Westerberg (aka Manila Luzon) said, “Antoine lived to entertain the world as Sahara Davenport, and the world was in awe over his extreme talent. But his heart is what made us all fall in love with him. To me he will always be my best friend, my hero, my Diva, and I have always considered myself more than lucky to have him be forever a part of my life. “ There has been no word on how this event will impact the upcoming all star version of the Logo show, which debuts on Oct. 22 on Logo in which Westerberg/Luzon was participating. The show, which also features a dozen other performers, including, Chad Michaels, Jujubee, Latrice Royale, Mimi Imfurst, Nina Flowers, Pandora Boxx, Raven, Shannel, Tammie Brown and Yara Sofia has already taped a number of episodes.
