BOI’S LIFE Rubber? Ducky! October is gay and lesbian history month and, as such, it’s packed to the gills with events. Not only do we have Halloween and all the parties that involves, we also have the added treat of Chicago hosting the Mr. International Rubber Contest and related events. Stop by The Center on Halsted from Nov. 5-7 to check it out. Which puts me in mind of a character Lily Tomlin created years ago; Lucille the Rubber freak. If you ever get a chance, listen to Lily’s “Modern Scream” album. You’ll laugh so hard you’ll pee your pants. Perhaps you should wear rubber panties while listening. By the time you read this, another “Night of 100 Drag Queens” will have come and gone with nothing left but memories and drag toes. But that won’t stop folks from donning all the costumes again for the various parties at bars and clubs, and of course, the better than ever expanded North Halsted Halloween Parade. Where else can you see both little kids dressed as queens and queens dressed as little kids? I’m hoping some progressive parents from Nettlehorst School put a group of kids together as The Village People. After such a busy month, put your feet up and look over our list of the candidates for state and federal offices. We’ve noted which candidates are endorsed by GLBT and progressive political organizations. Electing candidates who support equal GLBT rights is an important civic duty. While BOI, as an entertainment guide, does not offer endorsements of candidates, we will stress that it is of utmost importance to keep Republican Bill Brady from being elected. Brady has a long record of harmful positions on the economy and labor, education, minority and women’s rights and public safety. For more information check out whoisBillBrady.com

“A politician is an animal which can sit on a fence and yet keep both ears to the ground.” ~Henry Louis Mencken
W
hether you consider yourself a political animal or not, you have a responsibility to vote, especially if you’re a member of the GLBT community. For, in the words of Jean George Nathan, “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote. “ On Tuesday, Nov. 2 exercise your right to vote whether to chose to do so in person or have decided to “Vote Naked” by filling out an absentee ballot. It is difficult to keep up with a candidate’s stand on all issues, so voters often rely upon the endorsements of like-minded organizations. Both Equality Illinois and HRC have offered endorsements of candidates based upon their stance on GLBT issues. Citizen Action Illinois includes GLBT along with numerous other progressive issues. For the major state and federal candidates, we’ve indicated when specific candidates have received endorsements using the cons below. Equality Illinois only offers endorsements for state and local elections, not federal positions, that is hy you don’t see an endorsement for Alexi Giannoulias for Equality. √EQIL endorsed by Equality IL - PAC √HRC endorsed by Human Rights Campaign √CAI endorsed by Citizen Action IL For a more extensive list of endorsements; check out the websites for those organizations. For a list of candidates for judge and Congressional seats by district go to ilvote.gov/ILVote/OffSearch.aspx. Reviewing a candidate’s web site, can often offer more insight into the candidate’s stand on specific issues. Reeling Reeling: The Chicago Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival is presenting 54 programs over 10 days from November 4-13. The second oldest film festival of its kind in the US, Reeling showcases the best LGBT films and videos each and every year. From award-winning international feature films to social documentaries to experimental shorts, Reeling has always presented a range of genres that demonstrate the rich diversity of work being produced. This year’s screenings take place in four main venues: The Century Landmark Theatre 2828 N. Clark; Instituto Cervantes, 31 W. Ohio; Film Row Cinema at Columbia College, 1104 S. Wabash; Chicago Filmmakers, 5243 N. Clark and ShowPlace ICON Theatre 150 W. Roosevelt. All are easily accessible by public transportation and most offer free or reduced parking. This year’s opening night film, “Children of God”, is as timely as it is timeless as two very different men begin to stray from their culture’s expectations and find the courage to live their lives as their hearts dictate. Reeling will also present the Midwest premiere of “I Love You Phillip Morris”, starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. This true and incredible story premiered at Sundance to rave reviews! With “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” being such a hot button issue, nothing could be more timely than “A Marine Story”, winner of two Grand Jury Awards at this year’s Outfest. The first Chicago Lesbian and Gay International Film Festival took place in April 1981 in Chicago Filmmakers’ 90-seat folding-chair screening room on Hubbard. The festival sold out nearly every screening, leaving audiences demanding more. For a full schedule and ticket information go to reelingfilmfestival.org.
ON THE BIG SCREEN “Let Me In” (Overture/Relativity) An arty and visceral vampire movie , the title “Let Me In,” references the necessity for a vampire to be invited into a place) The American remake of the Swedish film “Let The Right One In” directed by Matt Reeves (“Cloverfield”), couldn’t have swooped down at a better time. With an all-time high number of suicides of bullied (gay) kids in the news, everyone could use a vampire gal-pal to save the day.

Set in the early 1980s, 12 year old loner Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is struggling in “Let Me In” His parents are separated and he lives with his devoutly religious and protective mother (Cara Buono). At school, Owen is regularly the target of a trio of relentless bullies, led by Kenny (Dylan Minnette), who is himself regularly bullied by his older brother (Brett DelBuono). Things change for Owen one winter when a new neighbor moves into his Los Alamos, New Mexico apartment complex. Abby (Chloe Moretz, who kicked ass as Hit-Girl in “Kick-Ass”), who has been Chloe Moretz 12 “for a long time,” and her guardian (Richard Jenkins), take up residency in the unit next to Owen’s. In spite of being warned not to befriend him, Abby sees a kindred spirit in Owen and an unlikely friendship begins. The film sets up a pair of terrifying premises. The first is the violent bullying of Owen and the way he is forced to exist in a state of constant guardedness. Kenny hates Owen, for no good reason, and he and his goons make Owen’s life a living hell. The second is Abby’s thirst for blood keeps her guardian busy finding victims for her, killing them and draining their blood and bringing it home to Abby. Her guardian begins to get sloppy, leading Abby to have hunt for her own prey. When he is almost captured following a failed carjacking and kill, the guardian douses himself in acid, but survives long enough to be brought to a hospital where a detective (Elias Koteas) attempts to question him. Meanwhile, Owen and Abby’s relationship continues to develop. He confides in her about his problems at school. In an attempt to seal the bond of their friendship, Owen slices his finger with a knife to initiate a blood oath, which only serves to unleash Abby’s dark side. Once revealed it turns out not to have much effect on either of them, instead serving to strengthen their identities as outsiders. But soon, Abby must move on, leaving Owen to fend for himself, leading to a terrifying, gory and graphically violent confrontation with the bullies. Unlike “Twilight,” “Let Me In” is a vampire movie with an authentically sensitive side. It’s a first-rate horror story on a few different levels.
Halloween: the Great Gay Holiday By Jesse Monteagudo
O
ctober is an important month in GLBT calendar. It is GLBT History Month, devoted to discovering and celebrating our past. On October 11, we observe “Coming Out Day”, a day in which we “take the next step” in our ongoing, coming-out process. But while both GLBT History Month and Coming Out Day are of recent origin, this month’s most popular queer holiday predates recorded history. It captures the essence of sex and gender variance to a much greater degree than do the activist holidays. Just open the pages of any queer paper during the first weeks of November and you will see what our communities were doing on October 31st. In the words of the Lesbian poet and scholar Judy Grahn, Halloween is “the great gay holiday”. Once thought to be a children’s holiday, Halloween is now almost as popular with adults. According to Nicholas Rogers, author of Halloween: From Pagan Ritual to Party Night, “Halloween at the end of the millennium has become a major party night for adults, arguably the most important after New Year’s Eve. . . . The amount of money spent on Halloween has more than doubled in the last decade, making it the second retail bonanza after Christmas.” Halloween is a corruption of All Hallows Eve, which is observed the night before All Saints Day (All Hallows Day). Like other Christian holy days, Halloween was adapted from a pagan holy day, in this case the Celtic feast of Samhain (pronounced sow-end). On Samhain, the Celts believed, the spirit world and the mortal realm come into close contact and spirits can slip out of their domain in order to visit us. The ancient Celts tried to ward off the Samhain spirits by offering them gifts or scaring them away with jack-o-lanterns. Others dressed up in fantastic costumes to impersonate and confuse the wandering spirits. In Another Mother Tongue, her cultural history of our peoples, Judy Grahn wrote about Halloween and its significance to us. Halloween, Grahn wrote, is a special holiday for GLBT people, who in many societies served as priests, witches, shamans, healers and intermediaries between the mortal and spirit worlds, “Impersonating a spirit is the only safe way to travel outdoors on Halloween. And who could better imitate spirits than the gay people whose traditional priestly role required just such intercourse with the spirit world? . . . The qualities of impersonation,” Grahn concluded, “and the dangerous business of crossing over from one world to another help explain why Halloween is the most significant gay holiday.” Though the Protestant reformers tried to suppress All Hallows Day observances as being both pagan and papist, Halloween emerged as a secular holiday during the 19th and 20th centuries. And while Halloween is enjoyed by everyone, “it has been the gay community,” Rogers tells us, “that has most flamboyantly exploited Halloween’s potential as a transgressive festival, as one that operates outside or on

the margins of orthodox time, space, and hierarchy. Indeed, it is the gay community that has been arguably most responsible for Halloween’s adult rejuvenation.” According to William Stewart, “Hallowe’en has always been a time of year when the gay communities experienced greater freedoms. . . . Even in the 1940s and 1950s when police harassment of gay bars was at its height, Hallowe’en was the one fairy-tale evening when the drag queens could come out with impunity.” In Wide-Open Town: A History of Queer San Francisco to 1965, historian Nan Alamilla Boyd wrote about Halloween parties that were held at the Beige Room and other San Francisco bars back in the fifties, which “included not simply a drag ball and a ‘parade of queens’ but the selection of the best dressed participant.” In New York City, Rogers wrote, by the mid-1970s “Gay promenades had become a constituent feature of the Greenwich Village Halloween celebrations. Beginning in 1974 as a countercultural event for the Village arts community, this annual parade, with its puppets, floats, and revelers, has become a fixture in Gotham’s calendar.”
Halloween’s appeal to the GLBTcommunity goes beyond the holiday’s historical or spiritual connotations. I believe that it has a lot to do with our role as outsiders in society; our propensity for cross-dressing and gender-bending; our love for the unusual and the fantastic; our ability to find humor in the absurdities and misfortunes of life; our fascination with festive costumes and the world of make-believe; and our special capacity to have fun. The GLBT community observes and cherishes it as a day in which we can do away with dull, ordinary, dumb reality and be our fun, exotic, erotic selves. “ Jesse Monteagudo is a freelance writer and Gay activist who lives in South Florida with his life partner and many friends. That’s So Gay
Fame! I’m Gonna Live Forever
Hot silver fox, Anderson Cooper, is criticizing use of the phrase “That’s so gay” by a character played by Vince Vaughn in the new film, “The Dilemma”. Cooper was speaking to Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show and said “I was sitting in a movie theater over the weekend and there was a preview of (Vaughn’s new) movie, and in it, the actor said, ‘That’s so gay,’ and I was shocked that not only did they put it Anderson Cooper in the movie, but that they thought that it was okay to put that in a preview for the movie to get people to go and see it. I just find those words, those terms - we’ve got to do something to make those words unacceptable because those words are hurting kids,”

Quick & Easy: Halloween Costumes Just Like You... By Anita Taylor
W
e’ve all been there, no plans for Halloween, then, suddenly you’re invited to a party, or two, or a dozen. Now you’ve got to come up with a costume and you don’t sew and can’t afford to pop for a purchased or rental costume. My darlings, your Auntie Anita lives to serve. Here area few ideas for quick and easy costumes. Some require a special shopping trip, but many of these items can be found in your closets. American Tourist: pull out that loud Hawaii shirt you bought while having a taste vacation. Wear a pair of Bermuda shorts (it’s even better if the patterns clash), add a camera hanging from your neck and some maps stuffed into pockets. Voila! You look like half the folks on any cruise ship. Hippy: This one is easy, after all its all back in style! Start with a pair of faded and ripped jeans – bell bottoms if you can find some - if not then go with cut-offs (as short as you dare). Add a tie-died shirt, a peace sign medallion, fringed vest (you may forgo the t-shirt and wear just the vest if your body is good enough) and a long wig, if your own hair isn’t long enough. Smoke something special before you go out to give you that mellow vibe. Spider: start with either black sweat pants and shirt, or if you’re looking for something a little sexier, a black catsuit or leotard and a tight-fitting black t shirt, Buy 3 pairs of black tights, cut the legs off and stuff them with black tissue paper, then sew or pin them to both sides of the outfit. Tie strings between the fake legs and your arms so that the fake arms move in unison with yours. Adding large black hat with a veil allows you to go as a black widow. Cereal Killer: attach little cereal boxes to a shirt (you can glue them on with white glue, or poke corresponding holes into the back side of the box and a shirt and use twist ties). Cut a slit in the boxes, glue plastic knives into the holes, drip red paint running down from the knife hole in the box. Basket of laundry: find a (thin) plastic laundry basket and cut a hole in the bottom that is large 52 boi
enough to fit through but is small enough so that is “sits” on your hips after you pull it over your head. Fill the basket with laundry (dirty underwear if you want to be kinky.) If you’re modest, you can wear a shirt and pants or a leotard, if you’re feeling risqué, try it with underwear or a Speedo. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: wear some camouflage and go as a GI. Barely There: If you dare to go skimpy; wear an animal print thong, grab a bit of artificial vine (from silk flower department at the Dollar Tree) and go as Tarzan or purchase a kilt and go as a Scot (undergarments optional). Enjoy yourself. Don’t go into strangers’ houses. Look both ways when crossing the street. And, don’t eat any of the candy until Aunt Anita has had a chance to examine it for razor blades.
