Victor Salvo in the Chicago Spotlight Interviews with leaders in Chicago’s GLBT community

by Gregg Shapiro

Chicagoan Victor Salvo has been active in the GLBT Community for twenty-five years. The founder and Executive Director of the Legacy Project, Victor was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in 1998. When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? I first came out in my late teens to the girl I was dating at the time. I went on to college where I tried to live a mostly “gay life” but the crushing burden of still being closeted with my family eventually took its toll on me. Finally around the age of 29, after living a completely out and open lifestyle in the gay ghetto of Boystown, I came out to my larger family. There were a few tears and lots of questions but the doomsday scenario I had long envisioned never happened. Everyone just accepted it and life went on. My family is now immensely supportive and proud of me. I am living proof that, even though it can be a long and difficult process, in the end, it does get better. Please name five of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. Alan Turing, first and foremost, because his work to break the Nazi Enigma Code in World War II changed the course of history. Bayard Rustin, because he was an out and open gay man in the 1940s, 50s and 60s when it was exceedingly difficult to even be black, let alone black and gay. John Maynard Keynes, founder of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, whose economic theories formed the basis of the New Deal monetary policy. Ruth Ellis, who ran a safe house and gathering spot for queer youth of color in Detroit from mid-1940 to the early 70s so that those who had been shunned everywhere had someplace where they could be themselves. Barbara Gittings, Her tireless work to have homosexuality removed from the list of mental 22 boi

disorders in the early 1970s, along with the countless other things she did, have left me astounded to know just how much one person can contribute to the greater good. What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? Everyone probably thinks it is the creation of the Legacy Walk, which was just dedicated. I think it would actually have to be my work on trying to get as many people from Chicago and Illinois as possible to the March on Washington in 1987. Everything we have around us now can be traced back to the passion that exploded after we returned from Washington. What are your future goals and aspirations? I would like to see us open a fullscale, international GLBT History Museum on Halsted where we can explore our many roles in world history and educate people. Because we have no such institution now, our precious personal collections are being bought up by university archives where our past is being locked away, never to be seen by the people who desperately need to touch it and learn from it. If we can open a museum and use it to enlighten the general public while teaching GLBT kids that they matter, and have always mattered, then there is hope that future generations won’t have to be stymied by the dual challenges of outside hate and internal doubts about our value in this world. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation. Try to learn from the past. Unlike other cultures, where stories and lessons from the past are passed down to future generations, the lack of social crossgenerational dialog in our community means that younger people have little understanding of the lessons already learned. When you learn that people like you have been navigating their way through difficult lives while still achieving great things for centuries it gives you a sense of perspective, a hope that things really do get better.
