INTERVIEW: PHILIP DAWKINS
in the know, on the go!
CHICAGO bars & clubs directory

CIRCUIT’S CLOSURE UPDATE Patrick Harms and Mike Macharello, managing partners of Circuit Night Club have announced that after 17 years in business that they have decided to close the club and go their separate ways for the time being. Macharello and Harms met 34 years ago at Forest Park’s Hideaway bar and became good friends. They worked together at Roscoe’s for a number of years before Harms left to open Qwest, a club with predominantly Puerto Rican clientele on Chicago’s Northwest side. At that same time, Macharello opened The Halsted Street Café, in the space where Circuit eventually opened. Harms lost his lease at Qwest after three years of operation. At about that same time Macharello was granted a liquor license for his space. The friends decided that it was time to join forces, Harms had a following from Qwest and Macharello had a new bar on Halsted Street with a successful Thursday Latin night, but needed a weekend lineup. They decided it was, in the words of Harms, “A match made in heaven.” boi

According to Harms, “I was good at the administrative aspect of the food and drink business, Mike’s forte was advertising, marketing and promotions. It was a good fit. We had a good 17 year run together and a this point, we have simply have decided to go in different directions.” Macharello adds, “We’ll continue to share a close friendship, we parted amicably. This business has been difficult on the both of us and we got through the worst of times together. I always wish Patrick the best.” “However, this is not the first time we have went in different directions, the last time was when we left Roscoe’s almost 20 years ago.” Harms states, “I enjoy working in the bar and nightclub business and being involved in the community. I am president of the NortHalsted Business Alliance and on the board of The Center on Halsted and would like to remain there in some capacity. I am also open to the possibility of a new club venture in the Circuit location.” BOI is under a separate corporation & Macharello plans to continue publishing BOI Magazine. “We have been in the process of heading in a new and exciting direction with the magazine for 2013 and we will announce those changes shortly,” Macharello said. “I am also working with a few other club owners to keep the party going.” “This may be the end of this particular episode for Patrick & myself, but I don’t believe it’s the end of the story!”
E-Commerce Timeline Ordering on line is now so common, that we barely think about it. However, it wasn’t that long ago that the idea was unheard of. It wasn’t a fantasy seen in films and television, like teleportation or traveling between planets. It didn’t even enter our consciousness. Then, in 1992, J.H. Snider and Terra Ziporyn write the life-changing book, “Future Shop: How New Technologies Will Change the Way We Shop and What We Buy”. Suddenly the idea seemed so basic that people wondered how they hadn’t thought of it. Now we can do our entire holiday shopping without leaving our chair, or even putting on clothes. Here’s how we got to that point. 1979 Videotex, a two way message service, developed basically for information sending in the U.K. Concurrently in the U.S. around that time, services such as The Source and CompuServe were established.. 1982 Minitel launched in France as an on line service making it possible to make purchases, check the stock market, search telephone directories and chat via the Internet. This is one of the most successful services using telephone lines. 1987 Swreg (an offshoot of CompuServe) provides software developers and shareware authors an on line market where they could sell their product using “merchant accounts”. 1990 Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, creates the first World Wide Web server and browser. He implemented the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet, starting an historic change in communication.
1994 Netscape released Navigator browser, later introduced Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption for secure transaction. Pizza Hut started on line ordering on its webpage. German company Intershop introduced its first online shopping system. Porn started selling on the internet. 1995 Jeff Bezos founds Amazon.com the first exclusively on line retailer. Dell and Cisco started using internet in all transactions. Online auction eBay is founded. 1998 U.S. starts selling electronic postal stamps online. 1999 Napster, a peer-to-peer file sharing software launches. 2001 PayPal is established, offering safe payment options for those choosing not to use credit cards on line. 2002 PayPal is purchased by eBay. 2003 Online shopping matures, Amazon.com posts first yearly profit. 2008 E-commerce sales figures reach $204 billion, a 17% rise from the previous year. 2010 E-commerce numbers match in-store purchases for the first time during the holiday season. 2011 Banks begin using software allowing customers to pay by phone, cash checks and transfer funds. PayPal debuts The Square, an attachment for the IPhone allowing individuals to swipe credit cards for payments to their accounts. boi
Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places By Ace Magyar There is no guarantee that you’re going to find the love of your life on the Internet. Of course, there’s no guarantee that you’ll meet him anywhere. But, if you find you’re not meeting anyone, you may be looking for love in all the wrong places. Gay Apps A friend of mine says that there are so many gay hook up apps for the IPhone it should be called GuyPhone. Although it may seem that way at times, not all apps are for the sole purpose of hooking up. Here are some apps that will stimulate that other large organ; your brain. Edge Gay News Reader The iPhone version of the hugely successful EDGE.com which is “largest network of local Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) news and entertainment portals in the world” serves 500,000 dedicated readers from a variety of metropolitan areas in the U.S. and abroad. Edge publishes news, entertainment, business, technology, style, health, fitness, travel and nightlife information to readers around the world. For the GLBT community, staying connected on the go has never been so easy. Other components of this app allow you to access Edge’s columnists, flip through photos taken in cities around the nation and a business directory of community-maintained, GLBT-friendly businesses in its target markets. Find out where to eat, drink, stay and party in Boston, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Providence, Orlando, Provincetown and Fire Island. Gay Internet Radio Live (G.I.R.L) GayInternetRadioLive.com is a blend of party, dance, club, and circuit sounds that will keep you dancing. You’ll hear remixes of popular mainstream hits by internationally known dance mix DJ’s and producers. It’s a free app that is pretty straight forward with no directories to search, 12 boi
providing immediate access. Artist and song title information is displayed for each track and two stream choices (128k and 64k). For best sound quality use a WiFi connection. Gay Cities Another free app that comes in very useful when traveling. Gay Cities provides instant access to gayfriendly restaurants, gay bars, hotels and beaches in more that 95 cities worldwide. It’s just one click for reviews by like minded travelers, phone number, web site and directions. My Gay Agenda We’re always hearing about “the Gay Agenda” from the Ridiculous Right, now here it is! My Gay Agenda is a powerful personal calendar app with event features for all-day events and events that span multiple days. MGA also has a stylish notes feature and a daily historical synopsis of key ‘gay historical events’. My Gay Agenda comes in both a free version, which only allows you to schedule events within the month you are in. There is also a $2.99 paid version, which opens up the full scheduling capabilities. The creators of the app, the folks at Cerebral Itch, offer this explanation for the creation of their app; “We’ve always suspected what your plans were: destroy marriage, recruit children and do lots of cardio. Well, here’s the proof: My Gay Agenda is a first-class personal calendar application and hilarious take on what the well-organized “Velvet Mafia” operative would carry. You also may occasionally come across handwritten notes unveiling nefarious plans to take over the world (or make it a bit more fabulous).”

WINTER WHITE The White Party November 19-26
Winter Party March 6-11
In 1985, Health Crisis Network, a fledgling not-forprofit HIV/AIDS service organization asked a local successful gay businessman, Frank Wager for help staging a fund raiser. The goal was to generate desperately needed funds to help combat a disease that was running rampant through the gay community. With this goal in mind, Frank and his committee of ten volunteers began working on “The White Party” concept.
The Winter Party Festival in Miami Beach, is one of the most anticipated events of the year, was the hottest winter in the world. WPF’12 featured six action-packed days and nights, nine spectacular dance parties and over 10,000 guests from around the world.
From the beginning, the committee wanted the party to symbolize community solidarity in a way that was non-political and non-combative. The color white was chosen as the theme for its purity and elegance. As the planning continued it became obvious that there were few venues in Dade County suitable for such an elegant event. Fellow committee member Jorge Suarez recommended Villa Vizcaya as a possibility since he was a member of The Vizcayans, a not-forprofit organization that helps raise funds for the continued restoration of the Estate and its Collections. For more than 24 years, the Villa Vizcaya Museum and Gardens have served as the backdrop of the annual fund raiser. The White Party, the crown jewel of a week-long series of fund raising events that make up the annual “White Party Week”, continues to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars to benefit Care Resource, South Florida’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS service organization, which offers clients access to promising new drug therapies in addition to the vast array of programs and services. With the ever-changing landscape of this pandemic, “The White Party” finds itself in the midst of change to fit today’s growing needs while catering to a much more diverse crowd. The White Party starts on November 19th and on November 20th there is a big Madonna MDNA party in downtown Miami. “White Martini” on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Mova Martini bar, through a variety of tea dance, late night and pool and beach parties stretching over six days. There are many events to choose from such as the White Dreams party at Space, The White Party at Soho Studios (featuring Crystal Waters) and the Muscle Beach Party. There’s the final party, held at the legendary multi-room culminating in Swan Song indoor and outdoor entertainment complex. Those wishing the party weekend will never end can Twist, on Monday, Nov. 26. The list of associated events is extensive and who knows, more might even be added, so we recommend you go to their website at whiteparty.com and get the full rundown. 14 boi
Launched in 1994 as a one-time charity dance event on the sands of beautiful South Beach, Winter Party Festival has evolved into a week-long series of events benefiting the GLBT community nationally and locally. A portion of the net proceeds of WPF support the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s efforts to take action, build power and create change for GLBT people. The majority of the proceeds are donated to local service organizations through a grant-making process administered by The Miami Foundation. We produce one of the world’s biggest and bestloved celebrations for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community in one of the world’s hottest destinations, Miami Beach, Florida. Over 10,000 guests from around the world attend our annual sixday extravaganza featuring the most spectacular venues, the most unforgettable parties and receptions and the best international DJ talent. For 18 years Winter Party Festival has been making a difference in people’s lives and providing vital funding to organizations serving the South Florida GLBT community. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force donates the majority of the net proceeds of Winter Party Festival and the Miami Recognition Dinner to local nonprofit organizations. Since assuming responsibility for these events in 2005, the Task Force has donated nearly $1.2 million dollars to the GLBT Community Projects Fund of The Miami Foundation.

Philip Dawkins: In the Chicago Spotlight Interviews with leaders in Chicago’s GLBT community
by Gregg Shapiro Philip Dawkins is the author of the criticallyacclaimed play “The Homosexuals”, recipient of a Joseph Jefferson Nomination for New Work following its summer 2011 world premiere with About Face Theatre. Upcoming productions of “The Homosexuals” in the 2012/13 theater season include The Ringwald Theater in Detroit and ManBites Dog Theater in North Carolina. Dawkins’ play “Failure: A Love Story”, directed by Seth Bockley, will premiere at Victory Gardens Theater, Nov. 16 through Dec. 30, followed by a summer production at the Illinois Shakespeare Festival.
When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? I came out when I was 18. It was long-distance, over the phone with both of my parents on the other end and my roommate holding my hand the whole time. My folks took it badly and all three of us spent about eight years doing and saying things that really hurt each other. It took them a long time, but they both came fully around, they found their own ways to love me. One of the greatest gifts my parents ever gave me was their willingness to admit, after fifty-some years, that they were wrong. I hope I’m as open to confrontation when I’m their age. Please name five of your GLBT heroes. Sifu Pat Carbajal and Sifu Catherine Blaisedell of Rising Phoenix Kung Fu: For teaching me how to defend myself in the art of kung fu and how to stand up as a proud, strong, homosexual with dignity and in the face of adversity.
Dan Savage: For teaching me everything I know. Alan Turing: My mother is a math professor, I have a minor in math as well as a small Snow White obsession. If you Google Alan Turing on that thing he invented, you’ll see why all this sorta makes him my patron saint. Ellen Degeneres: Because she leads with quiet compassion and hilarity. Also, when I was “going through it,” I had this nightmare that I ran into her and I told her “Thank you for everything.” Dream Ellen looked at me sadly and said “Nobody ever thanked me.” I woke up crying. I hope somebody thanks her every day for her bravery and generosity. Every day. What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? Teaching. I teach Kung fu, I teach playwriting, I teach theater. I know it helped me as an adult to be able to look back on the queer teachers and mentors I had as a kid. I think sometimes just being a positive presence in the life of a kid makes an impression that could impact the community for generations to come. What are your future goals and aspirations? Keep writing. I’m so lucky to be able to write and teach writing for a living. What a rare opportunity and a joy. Future goals also include transforming this novice black sash to a full-on black sash in my kung fu journey. And, of course, to grow and strengthen my relationship with my wonderful boyfriend, Bryan.
E. M. Forster: If there was a heart within my heart, E. M. Forster would pierce THAT. And for Words of wisdom to the next GLBT reminding me, “Only connect.” generation. Be patient. And demanding. 22 boi

ASK ACE Not A Kept Boy I have found the man of my dreams. He is handsome, fairly well off and is smart and funny. He treats me well and the sex is great. He’s also 35 years old than I am. Neither he nor I have a problem with our age difference but our friends do. His friends think I am a gold-digger and have said so right to his face (but not mine). My friends call him my “sugar daddy” right in front of him. He does not support me, I have a full time job, granted I don’t make as much as he does, but I pay my share. Is there anything wrong with this? NAKB Yes, but it’s not you who are wrong but your friends and his. Even if he was supporting you, it’s nobody’s business. Many couples, regardless of the age difference have a disparity in salaries. How they decide to handle their finances varies with each couple. If your arrangement works for the two of you, ignore what your friends say. However, you should tell your friends that he isn’t your sugar daddy and you won’t allow them to refer to him that way. As for his friends, he should address their disparaging remarks in a similar manner. Curious but Cautious I am interested in getting into the leather scene. I’m single and not very muscular, so I’m a little afraid to just go into a leather bar and pick someone up. I’m afraid that if someone started to go too far, I could be over-powered easily. I want to be dominated, but say how far things go. CBC The best way is to develop friendships with people in the leather community. Get to know some people for a while and follow your gut. You’re right to be wary of going home with someone you just met in a bar. That’s always good advice, but especially so if you’re going to put yourself in a position (such as bondage) where you have to relinquish
control. Don’t feel uncomfortable about expressing exactly what you want to do. Those in leather and fetish community are usually very frank about their desires and expect others to do the same. You might also want to check out chicagoleatherclub.org or LeatherViews.com, which is written by Jack Rinella, who has written about the leather scene for many years. The leather scene is all about trust, don’t get yourself into any situation where you don’t feel you can trust the other person. Couch Potato My girlfriend and I have been a great pair because we’ve always had such similar interests. We both love to snuggle up on the couch and watch old movies, play cards, stay in bed on Sunday mornings with the paper and coffee and then have some mind-blowing sex. I should say that’s how we used to be. A year ago she had a minor heart issue and it really scared her. Now she runs an hour a day, prefers to go for long walks rather than hang out at home and is hanging out with an entirely new group of women who are all jocks. She’s lost about 60 pounds and looks at least ten years younger than she used to. I’m afraid that I’m going to lose her to someone younger and better looking. What can I do? CP That depends, are you willing or able to become more active so that you can join her in some of her new activities? If so, that would help. If not, you need to sit down and have a long talk with her about your fears. Mention to her that you miss the times you used to spend together and that you’d like to do more of that. Mind your tone; you don’t want to come off as accusatory. State the facts. Ask if there’s some way she can alter her routines or if there are activities that you can do together. She has had a life-changing event in her life and it sounds as if she’s responding to it in an appropriate manner. boi 29
