Motor Mouth SMASHES AND CRASHES
By Parker Carr The Paris Auto Show is always entertaining. A highlight of the show was “L’Automobile et La Mode,” an exhibition featuring 115 years of cars, with beautiful vintage graphics from sales brochures, as well as vintage TV commercials and promotional films. This year’s show was a little more realistic than some of those in the past, but there were still many examples of automotive design at its best, as well as a few “What were they thinking?” moments. We’ve grouped our favorites in Smashes and Crashes
Smash
Fiat 500X quite an improvement on the Fiat 500L. They’ve pumped up the tiny 500 two-door hatchback into a tall four-door hatchback. Fiat also showed a 500 with a graphic outline of the original design of the model on the car’s side. Land Rover Discovery Sport is a crossover that is actually a reasonable size for those not navigating the Rocky Mountains. Still a gas guzzler, but as Miss Jean Brodie said, “For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like.” Volkswagen XL Sport doesn’t look like a member of the Volkswagen family. Not even a distant cousin. And I mean that as a compliment. The sports car runs on a Ducati Superlegger engine and has super aerodynamics with a wide hood and a ground-hugging narrow body.
14 boiMAG
Citroen Cactus Airflow is a crossover concept car which will use a compressed air application hybrid engine and, supposedly, will get nearly 100 mpg! This incredible mileage is due to aerodynamic design taken to the nth degree. Weighing in at 880 lbs. less than a Mini Cooper, the Cactus features a completely sealed underbody, dynamic wind deflectors behind the rear quarter windows, variable intake slats in the front bumper, shutters on the wheels and it does without door mirrors, relying solely on video feeds from each side. I.
Crash
Lamborghini Asterion is a plug-in concept that gets 910 hp from a 5.2-liter V-10 and three electric motors. Really? Someone who can afford a Lamborghini is going to worry about gas mileage? . Kia Sorento for 2015 looks a little like a Ford Expedition. The former mid-size looks like an old queen who has taken steroids and had collagen injections. The over-sized body is combined with a grill that looks like a pair of fat chrome lips. Audi TT Cabrio for 2015 is bland and generic and the storage space is so limited it even comes with luggage designed to fit into the miniscule space.
FIT TIPS
The TRX CHEST PRESS no more excuses!
By Michael Elder
To perform the TRX the Chest Press: Hold TRX grip in each hand, facing away from anchor point. Assume push-up position with feet directly under anchor point and body at about a 45-degree angle. If this resistance feels too easy, all you need to do is step further inward, toward the anchor point. If it is too difficult, step further out, away from the anchor point. Flex elbows next to sides and slowly lower body until chest is even with hands. Forcefully contract chest and flex arms to drive body to start position. Repeat for specified reps. I have written other articles about the beauty of TRX, the new revolutionary form of suspension training that you can utilize anywhere, even in the comfort of your own home. One of the great benefits of using the TRX, other than it’s portability, is the fact that your core is constantly engaged, regardless of what body part you are specifically targeting. One of my favorite exercises when using the TRX is the Chest Press. Novice and experienced lifters alike can greatly benefit from this exercise.
Keep back flat and core tight. Perform with control. Raise arms slightly to prevent TRX straps from rubbing against arms or shoulders. Remember that you can train the entire body using the TRX; this exercise is just one example. Because of its easy set up, you can use it anywhere: your home, your hotel room, even outside. So no more excuses, try the TRX! And especially give the Chest Press a try. You will get an effective workout for both your chest and your core.

iMUSIC By Gregg Shapiro
where the boys are American Idol can be commended for introducing us to Adam Lambert. Playlist: The Very Best of Adam Lambert compiles 14 significant tracks from the openly gay Lambert’s career so far. The first three are previously unreleased American Idol performances, including Lambert’s stellar reading of Tears For Fear’s “Mad World.” There are also a couple of soundtrack selections (from 2012 and "Glee"), as well as cuts from his studio albums For Your Entertainment and Trespassing. As these kinds of compilations go, this does a good job of providing a career overview, while also offering necessary material to completists. Long before there was Adam Lambert, there was Patrick Cowley. Cowley who died of AIDS complications in 1982 (the year Lambert was born), like Giorgio Moroder, was one of the true godfathers of disco (see Sylvester, et al). Cowley was a versatile musician and School Daze, 10 tracks of the music he composed for gay porn flicks attests to that. Talk about a long gay history in music! Rick Berlin is now in his fifth decade as a recording artist, previously affiliated with Orchestra Luna, Berlin Airlift and others, as well as being a prolific solo artist. In recent years, Berlin has teamed up with the Nickel & Dime Band before and has done so again for When We Were Kids. It’s a good combo for all involved, especially on songs such as “Irish Goodbye” (with guest vocals by Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes), “Daddy’s Got A Girlfriend,” “Something Breaks My Heart,” “Beautiful In Blue” and the title track (with guest vocals by Gary Cherone of Extreme).

For Why Do the Heathen Rage? his latest album under the Soft Pink Truth moniker, Drew Daniel of Matmos moves in an unnerving direction. Still incorporating electronics, but far-removed from its house music origins, the Soft Pink Truth goes down a hole of industrial death metal. Replacing the messages of doom with those of a more homoerotic nature on songs such as “Sadomasochistic Rites,” “Ready To Fuck” and “Grim and Frostbitten Gay Bar,” SPT effectively claims a queer perspective in much the same way that Rob Halford of Judas Priest did when he came out as gay. Wait by Tom Goss doesn’t contain “Bears,” the gay singer/songwriter’s popular 2013 dance anthem collaboration with Richard Morel of Blowoff fame. However, it does consist of some of Goss’ most infectious and irresistible tunes, including “It Only Takes One,” “I Think I,” “This Is Real,” and the gorgeous “In Time,” “Breath and Sound” (featuring Matt Alber) and “Illuminate The Dark.” Julian Fleisher, the son of legendary classical pianist Leon Fleisher, has released one of the coolest cabaret albums in recent memory. What makes Finally so special is the way Fleisher has combined original compositions, including standouts such as “Leaving The Leaving (to You)” and “All They Need To Know,” with unexpected cover tunes. For example, Fleisher’s reading of “When We Grow Up” (from Free To Be… You And Me) is sure to automatically produce smiles on the faces of all who hear it. Equally delightful is his choice and rendition of Carly Simon’s “The Girl You Think You See.” Also out there (emphasis on out) are Chasing Down the Bedlam by gay rocker Corey Tut, the experimental and challenging Just Your Typical Gay Teen Newlyweds by real-life couple Marky & Ricky, Stepping Out by gay crooner Anthony Strong, the soulful four-song EP We Need To Be Loved by Anthony Starble, and the exceptional five-song EP One Foot In Front of the Other by Lonesome Leash.

Back in Black
Pasadena City College has agreed to pay Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black $26,000 not to sue after the school rescinded an invitation to speak at commencement. School officials rescinded the offer after a stolen sex video with Black was posted online. Black wrote at the time of the incident that he had “confirmed the invitation, booked the international flights to get back to Southern California, canceled work and turned down paid invitations.” Black, who wrote the screenplay for “Milk,” ultimately delivered the May 9 address at his alma mater after he wrote a letter in the student newspaper hinting at legal action and trustees apologized and invited him back.

The actor and author made the announcement via a Twitter video. Harris has hosted Broadway’s Tony Awards four times and TV’s Emmy Awards twice.

When in Rome…
Gay marriage is illegal in Italy. Interior Minister Angelino Alfano recently sent a notice to local prefects saying any registrations of foreign gay marriages would be voided, and Rome’s prefect vowed to do so immediately. Rome’s mayor, Ignazio Marino, defied Italy’s government and registered 16 gay marriages celebrated abroad. Marino said, “The most important right is to say to your companion ‘I love you’ and to have that be recognized.”
TV Guide
Television has increased its depiction of gay, lesbian and bisexual characters, with the edge going to cable and the Internet over broadcast networks, according to a study released by the advocacy group GLAAD. Among the networks, Fox held with the highest percentage of lesbian, gay or bisexual regular characters, 6.5%. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Glee” among the programs contributed to that figure. ABC, which had tied with Fox for first last year at 5.4%, dropped to 4.5% this year. NBC’s 3.8%, up almost 3 points from last year, while CBS’ shows had 3.2% gay, lesbian or bisexual characters, up from 1.9% from last season. The CW has no regular LGBT characters, the gay rights group said. Among cable TV shows, there were 64 regular LGBT characters, up from 42 last season. HBO has the most characters, followed by ABC Family and Showtime.

When It Hits The Fan
So how is the community going to react if The Center on Halsted (COH) drops the Grabby Awards and Mr. International Rubber as some of its big corporate donors want? For the past few years both events have been held at COH, but it seems that some of the some donors aren’t comfortable with that aspect of our community and have threatened to pull funding if those events aren’t given the boot. So, where does the line get drawn? Is COH for our whole community or only those aspects with which corporate folks feel comfortable? Are we going to stand for this? If so we might as well change the rainbow flag to a beige one.
Full Moons, Tops and Bottoms
Touché celebrates its 37th anniversary, which happens to coincide with its “Full Moon” party on Thursday, Nov. 6. Not the first time something has landed on a full moon at Touché, I’m certain. Also adding to the celebration Mr. Chicago Leather 2014 Miguel Torres will represent the bar in TPAN’s Barlesque fundraiser.
