QMUSIC By Gregg Shapiro

Rod Stewart had rock credibility and a touch of glam sensibility. With too much talent (and energy) to contain in a solo career, during the early 1970s, Stewart divided his time between the work he did under his own name and what he did as a member of the all-star band Faces. As lead vocalist, Stewart was backed up by a phenomenal band including Ron Wood, Kenney Jones, the late Ronnie Lane and the late Ian McLagan. The handsomely packaged five disc set 1970-1975: You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything… compiles all four Faces albums with bonus tracks, a fifth nine-track disc, contains Stray Singles & B-Sides as its title states. This is one example of a blast from the past. Just in case Faces don’t rock hard enough for you, there’s always Steppenwolf. Masters of late 1960s metal and psychedelic rock, the quintet is responsible for the classic anthem “Born To Be Wild.” That revved up song, made famous in the movie “Easy Rider”, along with 37 more can be found on the double disc compilation The ABC/Dunhill Singles Collection. Chris Cornell has a bit of Rod Stewart in him. What that means is that, like Stewart, Cornell had too much to say and do to be constrained by grunge hit-makers Soundgarden. So, he struck out on his

Facing the Past own in 1999 with his best solo album Euphoria Mourning, recently reissued as a newly remastered CD. Cornell rocks on Euphoria Morning, but nowhere near as much (or as loudly) as he did in Soundgarden. That’s a good thing because it allowed him to put some distance between himself and that band, something which comes through on songs such as “When I’m Down,” the bluesy wail of “Wave Goodbye” and “Disappearing One” (which features a clarinet!). Looking for something on the softer side? Seventies trio America, originally formed in England, borrowed the vocal harmonic style of Crosby, Stills & Nash for their string of huge hit singles, beginning with 1972’s “A Horse With No Name.” The eight-disc box set The Warner Bros. Years: 1971-1977, tastefully recreates original album art, including inserts (some with lyrics) as well as the triple gatefold of Homecoming. The first five albums were the source of America’s greatest success. In addition to the aforementioned “A Horse With No Name,” these five records yielded hits such as “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Only In Your Heart,” “Muskrat Love,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” “Daisy Jane” and “Sister Golden Hair,” among others. America is a band that has stood the test of time and this collection is a good indication of why that is so.

Motor Mouth

B ond for G lory

By Parker Carr As a little boy I was obsessed with James Bond. Sure the cars were great and that’s what initially drew me to the movies (I was a gear-head even back then) but it was the chance to see James Bond that really got my heart pounding.

Lotus Espirit – “The Spy Who Loved Me” 1977 By this point in the series all aspects are over the top and this vehicle is no exception. It out-maneuvered enemies on both land and sea! Yes, turned into a submarine with the dashboard transforming to reveal submarine instruments and dials.

In the new Bond film, “Spectre”, opening this November, that the filmmakers blow up seven specially designed Aston Martin DB10 sports cars valued at more than $24 million! Now you know why movies cost so much to make.

7 Citroen 2CV – “For Your Eyes Only” 1981 The bright yellow auto was a beat up piece of crap, certainly the cheapest car Bond ever drove. It was also the From “Dr. No” through to “Skyfall”, exotic, only one I could ever expensive and stylish vehicles have been an afford. I had one throughout college. It had iconic part of the series. Here’s a list of my nowhere near the power of the one in the favorite Bond’s methods of transportation. film, which was retrofit with a more powerful engine to keep ahead of the Peugeot 504s Sunbeam Alpine that were chasing it. Series II - “Dr. No” 1962 Aston Martin V8 Vantage The British made – “The Living Daylights” Sunbeam Alpine 1987 was supposedly Timothy Dalton's Bond borrowed from drove the last of the Jamaican local generation of Astons that (no big budget for were based on the original this first Bond movie), to avoid the cost of DBS design. With a smooth, importing one. It’s not much of a car, but I gun-metal finish and gadgets packed in by Q; include it, because it’s the first Bond car we including spiked tires, retractable skis, lasers see on film. and missiles, it is the quintessential Bond car. Aston Martin DB5 – “Goldfinger” 1964 The Aston Martin DB5 is introduced by Q in one of his most memorable scenes and throughout the film you were waiting for Bond to use them, including the ejector seat. Extra points for the scene where Goldfinger has Bond chained up, spread eagle (Bond in bondage!) which awakened a kinky side in me I didn’t know existed. TMI?

BMW R 1200 C- “Tomorrow Never Dies” 1997 The motorcycle is used in a chase sequence through the streets of Saigon, ridden by both James Bond and Wai Lin, a Chinese secret agent. While handcuffed! At one point they jump from one rooftop onto another and over the whirling blades of a pursuing helicopter.

FIT TIPS

Assisted Single Leg Squats:

By Michael Elder

The gym that I train at is called Quads, and for good reason. There is a whole lot of lower body training going on including squats, dead lifts, leg presses, and more. While leg extensions remain a great exercise for isolating the quads, it is not the only exercise in the arsenal to specifically target this large and powerful muscle group. One of my all-time favorites is the Assisted Single Leg Squat, also known as Assisted “Pistol” Squats. If you want an exercise that will fire your quads, look no further. This exercise can also be performed using a TRX or straps for support instead of a horizontal bar. This is also an exercise that looks easier that it actually is. Make no mistake; this exercise is not easy. Care should be taken to use however much upper body support you need to complete the movement. Range of motion may also need to be limited. Trying to achieve a 90 degree angle might be a little too much for those who have not performed this exercise before. For that reason, it helps to have a base strength before attempting this exercise.

Develop the Quads of Death To Perform This Exercise: • Stand behind horizontal bar, which should be at approximately belly button level. Place fingertips or inside base of thumbs on bar, hold with just enough contact for balance and self-assistance. • Balance on one leg with opposite leg extended straight leg forward as high as possible. • Squat down as far as possible while keeping leg elevated off of floor. Keep back straight and supporting knee pointed same direction as supporting foot. • Raise body back up to original position until knee and hip of supporting leg is straight. • Repeat and continue with opposite leg. • Supporting knee should point same direction as foot throughout movement. My clients usually hate me when I make them do this exercise because it is intense. But if you are looking for a new way to fire those quads and take them to the next level, give this one a try. You’ll hate me too- but in a good way!

Michael Elder has been working as a fitness professional in Chicago for the last 15 years. He has a background in gymnastics and is certified as a personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise (ACE). He can be contacted directly through his website, www.MichaelElder.com.

Citizen Jojo By Gregg Shapiro

Now on DVD and Blu-ray with a wealth of bonus material, Oscar-winning doc Citizenfour, the third part of filmmaker Laura Poitras’ post 9/11 trilogy, is a real-life thriller. The story of the US government’s “war on whistleblowers,” it begins in 2012 when gay journalist Glenn Greenwald, of Salon.com and The Guardian, is contacted by an anonymous source. That source turns out to be none other than 29 year old NSA contractor Edward Snowden. From the encrypted emails about NSA surveillance to the news that everyone in the country is being spied on with the compliance of the country's largest telecom companies, Citizenfour is a perfect illustration of the domino effect. There’s a lot of technical information in the movie that runs the risk of blending together. What saves it is the combination of the human elements and heartpounding suspense. First and foremost is Snowden’s motivation for going public with the story; how the State’s power against people’s ability to meaningfully oppose that power was threatened. Willing to risk his relationship with his girlfriend, as well as imprisonment, to prevent the curtailment of his intellectual freedom and that of others, Snowden makes it clear he doesn’t see what he was doing as self-sacrifice, rather he felt he could contribute to the good of others.

26 boiMAG

Poitras, who co-directed the queer 2003 doc Flag Wars, focuses on the openly gay Greenwald, as well as queer journalist/ hacker Jacob Applebaum, making this already fascinating story of increased interest to LGBT viewers..

Finally making its way to DVD, the Clive Barker-produced LGBT film fest selection Jojo Baby: Without the Mask is a doc about legendary club kid and dollmaker Jojo Baby, co-directed by Dana Buning and Mark Danforth. Well-loved in the art world and nightclub scene, Jojo Baby credits both his late mother (who taught him to sew by hand) and the late Greer Lankton (a trans artist who worked with Jim Henson on Sesame Street) with teaching him his craft. Working on multiple projects simultaneously, Jojo is also known for transforming himself into works of art. In addition to his assortment of tattoos, Jojo prides himself on his costumes as well as his skills with make-up. While the filmmakers incorporate interviews with several people close to Jojo, including his brother Jay Jay and best friend Sal-E, Jojo Baby is the primary focus and the one who tells his story the best. Jojo, who has a penchant for “rough trade”, talks openly about his relationship troubles as well as his health issues, including his HIV+ status and bout with testicular cancer, as well as his Roman Catholic background and time in seminary.
