BOI’S LIFE Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Joyous Solstice, Happy New Year and a belated Happy Hanukkah and Kul ‘am wa enta bi-khair. We live in a pluralistic society and a global village. While all viewpoints and beliefs may not be equally represented in popular culture, education and politics, we are closer to inclusiveness than we ever were before. Not so long ago most of the families represented in pop culture were Christian, white and in tact. Sure, sometimes it would get a little exotic and you’d have some Christian ethnic family; Swedes, Germans or Italians, usually. Perhaps it might be a blended family, but only if both parents were widowed. If things went a little more exotic, it might be a Jewish family. Those who are a bit younger were able to see a black family (thank you Bill Cosby) or a divorced couple (I’m talkin’ ‘bout you Erica Kane.) I come from a mixed-religion, mixed-race family. I certainly didn’t see anything representing my life in books and movies, or on television. Add the fact that I’m gay on top of that and it made me a vampire in popular culture, I never saw myself reflected in society’s image. Things are certainly different now. Some of television’s hottest shows feature mixed-race couples, gay parents, alternative families and groups of friends that are hardly homogeneous. There’s still a long way to go, but things are improving. Let’s keep up that optimism and good cheer as we go though this time a year when all cultures and religions recognize holy days, holidays and other celebrations. Many cultures feature traditions of gift-giving and feasting at this time. However, with the economy in the tank, many folks are cutting back on exchanging presents. Hang on to the spirit and good will by thinking of stocking stuffers. There’s a thrill of childhood relived as you empty your stocking to see what surprises await inside. This issue’s holiday gift guide features some ideas for terrific stocking stuffers, no matter what your budget. For a laugh, we also take a look at some unbelievably bad gift ideas. The one up-side to the poor economy; many restaurants are offering incredible deals on holiday meals to lure us out for our celebrations. Take a look at our holiday dining guide for some of the deals out there. Cheers!

here is some truth to the saying that, “Good things come in small packages.” At least that’s often the case when it comes to stocking stuffers. With the economy as tight as it has been for the past few years, many folks are forgoing larger gifts and choosing to give smaller gifts.

There are some items that are perfect stocking stuffers. Goodies such as lip balm, key chains, office supplies, instant-win lottery tickets (or as my father calls them; scratchand sniff ), candy or snacks make for great gifts, and who can’t use at least one of those things? Then there are those items that we always need, but never seem to have enough on hand, such as; lube, condoms, band aids, tins of breath mints. For more individualized items, think of the recipient’s hobbies and interests. Are they always hooked up to their MP3 player? How about a nice pair of retractable ear buds? I’m certain they would appreciate untangled wires. If your friend’s into drag, it’s a cinch to drop in some false eyelashes, make-up or pantyhose. The techie in your crowd can always use a USB thumb drive. If you’re really stuck for an idea, head over to Uncle Fun at 1338 W. Belmont. The shop is packed full of fun, weird, bizarre and useful gifts, many of which you’ll remember from your childhood. Check out the website at unclefunchicago.com For those of you who need more concrete suggestions, check out these fun items. It’s Hip To Be Square.

Mimi Imfurst is one of New York’s most outrageous, controversial, and hysterical night life personalities. Mimi opened for Kathy Griffin at Milwaukee’s PrideFest and in the title role of the off-Broadway hit, “Diary of Anne Frankenstein.” In her show, “Mary Christmas II You, Too” she portrays the Virgin Mary and sets the record straight about a few misconceptions. Mimi will be featured on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3, but first she brings her holiday show to Hydrate on Dec. 18. She dished with us about drag and her philosophy of life.

ith the Christmas holiday fast approaching, it’s not too early to start making your plans. hat better to slip into a holiday stocking than a CD or DVD featuring the recipient’s favorite performer. Here’s a collection for those on your gift list who worship a diva.

“Kylie: Rare and Unseen” (MVD Visual): The Kylie Minogue installment from the Rare and Unseen Collection features non-stop interviews with the “21st century Aphrodite,” as well as rare footage such as her first ever TV appearance, British TV interviews from the ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s and much more. In the unseen category, the DVD contains an Australian interview with Kylie at 21, the newly restored “Ghost Train” children’s show and press interviews, among other thrilling bits. “Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook” (PBS), the three part series that originally aired on PBS is now available in a double DVD set. Out performer, musical historian and archivist Feinstein guides viewers through a celebration and exploration of 20th century pop music. The three hour-long episodes on the first disc span the 1920s through the 1960s, while the second disc of bonus material includes additional Feinstein performance footage and archival material with Judy Garland, Duke Ellington and others. What is especially noteworthy about the series is the way it balances historical information and footage with the more personal aspect of Feinstein’s own story (including his relationship with husband Terrence Flannery) and concert performances. “Michael Jackson’s Vision” (Epic/Legacy): Over the course of 40 music videos and many short films, spread out across three DVDs, Michael Jackson’s legion of fans can watch his development and domination as the unparalleled King of Pop videos (as well as the diminishment of his nose). From simple early productions such as “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “She’s Out of My Life” to 22 boi

storyboarded groundbreakers including “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” to mini-epics such as “Thriller” (directed by John Landis) and “Bad” (directed by Martin Scorcese and featuring Wesley Snipes) to special effects breakthroughs “Black and White,” “Scream” and “Ghosts,” and choreography spectaculars “Smooth Criminal,” “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Remember The Time,” as well as the Ryan White tribute “Gone Too Soon,” Jackson’s vision comes through. A third bonus disc features three Jackson videos, the Paul McCartney duet “Say Say Say,” the previously unreleased “One More Chance” and more. “The Judy Garland Show” (Classic World/Infinity): Volume Four of “The Judy Garland Show,” from Garland’s short-lived, but acclaimed, early 1960s variety series features two complete episodes with guest stars such as grand dame Ethel Merman, comedian Shelley Berman, crooner Vic Damone, triple threat Chita Rivera and comic Louis Nye. The two episodes on Volume Five include performances by the legendary Steve Allen, the “Velvet Fog” himself, Mel Tormé, Jayne Meadows and the dynamic Diahann Carroll. “Masters of American Music: Sarah Vaughan – The Divine One” (EuroArts): Part of the awardwinning “Masters of American Music Series,” “Sarah Vaughan – The Divine One” features Billy Eckstine and Marty Paich, as well as Vaughan’s daughter Paris and her mother Ada, and includes her performances of “Someone To Watch Over Me,” “I’ve Got A Crush On You,” “Misty,” “Send In The Clowns,” and more.

Roscoe’s Drag Race 2010 finals will be held on Dec. 21. The winner of the finals will be crowned Miss Roscoe’s. The winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship and will travel around the world – oops, sorry, that’s Miss America. Miss Roscoe’s will get a couple of shots and some drink tickets, plus some other good stuff… Shangela a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race will perform a special show at Spin on Saturday Dec. 18, accompanied by special guest star, Jade.

Heard on Halsted (and beyond) “Mmmmmarvelously yummy” That’s what they’re saying about the grilled cheese special at Cocktail all day Monday until 11 at night. The sandwich is served on Texas toast with cheddar cheese with sun dried tomatoes. Best of all, it’s only a buck! “He rules that dance floor!” That’s DJ Digi Dave they’re talking about at Circuit’s Flashback Fridays. BTW Circuit will host a fashion show featuring clothing from Alcala’s Western Wear on Dec. 5 with $3 cervesas. “Does a hot dog still makes her lose control?” Wondered folks standing in line outside the Music Box for the sold out screening of “Valley of the Dolls” with an appearance by Patty Duke. The event was a benefit for the Queer Film Society. If you’re under 40 ask your parents about that reference. “He’s hot, he’s funny, he’s smart and he looks good in drag. I hope he has a small dick.” A jealous queen drooling over Bradley Thomas at Sidetrack. And, no, he doesn’t.

Holiday Happenings

You simply must see John Waters in “A John Waters Christmas” at The Harris Theater in Millennium Park on Dec. 14. As The New York Times review puts it, “He puts the X back in Xmas.” The legendary cult filmmaker, actor, writer and originator of the Hairspray dynasty performs his one-man show with the same kitschy, campy aesthetic as in his movies… Cram hosts a “Naughty & Nice” party on Dec. 9 There’ll be models, raffles, models, gifts, models, music and models. RSVP on Cram’s Facebook page. Did I mention that there would be models? …If you didn’t get your stoking stuffed enough on Christmas, head over to Steamworks Christmas night and you might get a Teddy bear since it just happens to be “Bears, The Baths and Beyond” party.

Sing Out Sister

The Indigo Girls welcome special guests Shawn Mullins and Chely Wright to their Dec. 7 show at House of Blues. Speaking of which, Ke$ha has a show there on Feb. 24… The Flesh Hungry Dog Show at Jackhammer on Dec. 10 features The Spooky Qs, The Sleeptalkers and Wanton Looks… Those of you who didn’t get your tickets to the Backstreet Boys/New Kids on the Block show needn’t despair. A second BSB/NKOTB show has been added on Saturday, June 18! …The Chicago House Speaker’s Luncheon on Dec. 9 at the Palmer House, featuring keynote speaker, former Secretary of State, Madeleine K. Albright will address issues relating to HIV and Homelessness. Tickets are $150 to $750. Call 773.248.5200 x304 for more information.

Party With A Purpose.

It’s that time of year; peace on earth good will to all men. Yadda, yadda, yadda. It’s a good thing some folks aren’t as much as a Grinch as I’m feeling these days. Here’s the run-down on some charitable events that should offer a fun time as well: MusicPlant Group hosts a holiday food drive party on Dec. 12 from 7-midnight. The event features performances by Pepper MaSahy, Wayne Taylor, SK8, Marshall Titus, Linda Clifford and Georgie Porgie, and one hour of free vodka and Moonshine craft beer. I can get pretty blotto drinking vodka for one hour. Admission is by bringing two bags full of non-perishable food items. By now it’s no secret that Howard Brown Health Care Center (HBHC) is in financial trouble. They clinic needs to raise $500,000 by the end of the year to stay open. HBHC has been serving the GLBT and allied community for decades. It’s time to step up and help them get past this crisis. Parlour on Clark is hosting its first “Pay It Forward” Christmas benefit on Saturday, Dec. 18. They’re currently looking for some higher-end items for the silent auction part of the party. Tim Otte, whose recent art exhibit was such a success, is donating a painting. Their goal is to raise enough money to present HBHC with a check for $10,000. If you can help out, give the folks at the bar a call 773.564.9274.

I

’m a fan of really bad gifts. These are presents that are so off the mark that it’s almost humorous. We’ve all gotten them, the ones where you open the package look inside and freeze a smile on your face while you’re thinking, “Does this person know anything about me?” The really bad gifts can be something totally useless, tacky or wacky. But like all trash, it can be recycled. My friends and I actually save these gifts and re-wrap them for my annual “Christmas in July” party where truly terrible gifts get a chance at redemption through entertainment. Here are some actual items that are available this season: The Banana Bunker $4.99 @ BananaBunker.com What it is: a protective sheath to protect a banana from being bruised in a lunch bag. What it looks like: a fruit-filled dildo The no! no! Shaver $250 @ Sephora.com What it is: a device to trim pubic hair by using a thermodynamic wire that “transmits heat to the hair.” What it smells like: burning hair. In other words, this device burns away the hair on your crotch. Wacky Condoms Various prices @ wackyrubbers.com What it is: a line of hand-painted novelty condoms. Some of the styles are “Big Ben” (maybe you thought he said, “I want a big clock up my ass.”) and “The Funky Chicken.” Oh, and by the way, they make sounds when the tip is touched. What it means: You’re not going to get laid. Little Joseph Candle Holder $115 @ aplusrstore.com What it is: a porcelain candle holder in the shape of a baby’s head. What it says: “Run for your life!”

BASHO THE SUMO WRESTLER TABLE $325 at skymall.com What it is: a a 3/8”-thick round tempered glass end table supported by a Sumo wrestler statue. What it says: “Enjoy your coffe while you look at my butt crack.”
