FRANKIE KNUCKLES In the Chicago Spotlight Interviews with leaders in Chicago’s GLBT community

Universally credited as a pioneer of dance music and famously crowned “The Godfather of House Music” Frankie Knuckles made his name at Chicago’s groundbreaking nightclub The Warehouse in the ‘80s. His 1997 Grammy Award for Remixer of the Year and his work with mainstream pop and R&B superstars such as the Diana Ross and The Pet Shop Boys are just a few of his accomplishments. When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? I can’t say I ever remember being in. I’ve always lived a pretty open life. It probably disturbed my family a bit but I’ve always been the same guy. Name five of your GLBT heroes and explain why you’ve chosen them. James Baldwin - What can I say about James Baldwin that hasn’t already been said? A great American novelist/ playwright. My literary hero, along with Tennessee Williams. Sylvester - The first gay artist I met who truly lived in his truth. We became great friends and bestest girlfriends. I hate that I never got the chance to work with him. I miss him so much. Steve Ostrow - Owner of the legendary Continental Baths the grandest gay bath house in the history.He gave me my first professional job as DJ 5 years before I moved to Chicago. Steve also discovered Bette Midler, Barry Manilow and Wayland Flowers and Madam. Steve now lives in Sydney, Australia, working in AIDS advocacy. Keith Haring - Apart from being such a gifted artist Keith was also one of the nicest and most generous men I’ve ever know. Keith gave so much to inner city youth programs charities worldwide. Larry Levan - My best friend from childhood Larry was beautiful and as elusive as a butterfly. Growing up in this business he inspired and pushed me towards my dreams. He’s the main reason why I came to Chicago. There’s not a day 22 boi

that goes by that I don’t draw inspiration from the very thought of him. What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the LGBT community in Chicago and at large? Chicago adopted me a long time ago. My club ‘The Warehouse’, although off the beaten path, was very much a part of the community. I worked hard at bringing focus and recognition to who we were and our role in the community. Doing countless fundraisers in NYC for GMHC, God’s Love We Deliver and the Harvey Milk School, because of the level of success I’ve achieved throughout my career I’ve always felt it necessary to give back. Every award and reward I received I felt it my duty that someone, everyone in the community should benefit from in some way. A door of opportunity opens for me I try to take as many folks thru as possible. What are your future goals and aspirations? My immediate goals are the launch my latest album project, “Tales Beyond the Tone Arm” and embark on a global tour in support of it, beginning in Asia at Christmas. And with my new launch pad moniker, ‘Director’s Cut’ continue to be a conduit for new artists, as well as established ones get their foot in the doors of the industry worldwide. We’re a bit of a pro bono production. So many young people in our community, and some great well established artists that the industry may have turned their backs on, have dreams that they’re trying to achieve. If my production work can gain attention for them and get their foot in the door, then we all succeed. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation.

The world we live and play in is so different today. It’s so much smaller. The color lines have blurred regardless to what the old guard or, what I like to call yesterday’s queens may say. If we doing nothing else, we have to live in our truth. It’s all that we have.
