ISSUE 24.11

You might notice that in this issue, we don’t have a “cover boi” page. Lately we’ve been so jam-packed with content and ads that we haven’t had room. Rather than eliminate this popular feature as we had to do last issue (and believe me I got all sorts of mail wanting to know about the man with the big peppermint stick), we’re placing the info here in place of my regular column. I figured you wanted to know about the hot guys than me blathering on about the issue you were holding in your hands. So I’ll stop and give you the 411 on our current “cover boi”.

Corey is a bartender at a straight club in the River North area. He recently moved here from Philadelphia to attend dental college. Yes everyone, one day this man may be stuffing your mouth with his instruments. Here is what he had to say:

Advertising

“I’ve always worked as a bartender as I put myself through school. I come from a large family (nine brothers and three are gay, possibly four... we all think so, but he hasn’t said anything yet) and my dad’s a mechanic so my parents paying for school wasn’t even an option. Back home I mostly worked in hotel and restaurant bars, but when I came to Chicago I decided to work in night clubs. The money’s much better, and it’s easier to keep my mind on my studies during the day.

Cover BOI: Corey Taylor

I think I’m kind of weird, I mean what little kid says he wants to be a dentist when he grows up? It’s what I’ve always wanted to do, so I guess it’s no surprise that the first thing I notice about a guy is his smile. I’m literally a sucker for a nice set of pearly whites, and no I don’t mean figuratively.... lol boi

Cheers! There are so many options for how to spend New Year’s Eve. If you want to go out, but haven’t yet decided where, here’s the info that was available to us as we went to press, all presented in an easy to read chart. Sorry if we missed anyone. Remember, it’s better to go to a party than have a party! Let someone else do all the work while you have all the fun. It may well be worth the price of admission and drinks to go out than to supply the neighborhood with costly food and drinks, meanwhile leaving you with a mess to clean up! Also, leave the hassle of driving to someone else, several bus and rail routes will have later service hours to accommodate for the party night and offer a safe option for travelers... taxis will also be out in full force. Stuff That Stocking There’s always those last minute gifts you need, either because you completely forgot or the person gave you a gift and you feel the need to reciprocate (which, by the way, you don’t. A simple thank you will suffice.) If you do like to keep some gifts on hand, buy a few inexpensive stockings and stuff them with goodies you wouldn’t mind using yourself. Hang them on your mantle and simply peek inside to see which is most appropriate for your last minute gift recipient. Here’s a gift list that will be great for boys and girls on your list who are naughty or nice. Pick up a couple of tickets to see Kathy Griffin at the Chicago Theatre on Jan. 20 or 21 and give one to someone you’d like to date. Tickets range in price from $50 to $70. Or how about tickets to something from the Broadway in Chicago series. “The Book of Mormon” is certain to be a hot ticket. With gifts and accessories for men, women and home, Stitch, on Damen, could easily be your one stop shopping place. A pair of cuff-links, wallet or candelabra is always welcome. Slip a Lettuce Entertain You gift card into their hose. Now through Dec. 30 you will receive a $25 Holiday Bonus Certificate* for every $100 in gift cards you buy.

designs of shirts, pants, coats, belts and bags, much easier to fit in a stocking than a pair of jeans. Finding the Agna, a cable knit beanie, from Goorin Brothers in their stocking is sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face. Made of 100% acrylic, this beanie is available in three color ways and features a contrasting fold-up band and fluffy pom pom at the tip. Whether it’s a tube of lube, a leather whip, some handcuffs or some porn, the kinky folks on your list will appreciate something from Eagle Leathers, Cupid’s Treasures or The Ram. While you can’t really slip a tropical fish into a stocking (well, you can, but the results wouldn’t be very pleasant), you can pick up an accessory or gift certificate for the ichthyologist on your list. Chicago’s Aquarium and Aquatic Life store on Clark in Andersonville is like a trip to Shedd Aquarium, only cheaper. A gift certificate for a spa service is always appreciated. Stop in a Sir Spa and pick up a certificate for a specific service or a dollar amount. While you’re at it, pick up some product too. A little moisturizer is always needed at this time of year.

If you’re still having trouble finding a unique gift for someone, head over to the French Market on the lower level of Union Station. Through Christmas Eve the Market’s “Marché de Noël” features dozens of visiting artisans selling unique gift items A little bling is always appreciated. Stop in Wicker Park’s The Silver Room and pick out daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Modeled after a sterling silver bracelet, necklace, earrings, French Christmas markets, Marché de Noël provides a fantastic atmosphere and body jewelry for your pierced friends or unique shopping options, not to mention sunglasses. After all, as they say, “It’s not the gift, extensive collection of “authentic original” but the thought behind it, that counts.” You used to groan when grandma gave you underwear for Christmas,. I can guarantee your gift recipient won’t complain about some underwear from Egoist on Halsted.

By Rick Karlin If you like to get all Martha Stewart when cooking your holiday meal, this is not the column for you. If, however, you’re a bit inexperienced or inept in the kitchen and hosting your first holiday meal on your own, or even bringing a dish to a family get-together, this is the article for you. If you’re hosting the dinner I’ve pulled together a bunch of helpful hints and shortcuts that should make the day a breeze. If you only need to bring a side dish to an event, skip over to the column of foolproof recipes I’ve assembled. A successful host also knows when and where to take shortcuts or let others do the work. There seems to be a false perception that if you host the big meal, you have to prepare everything yourself. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Big holiday dinners are all about sharing good food with family and friends. If your guests ask if they can bring something, by all means say yes! If they have a specialty dish they want to bring, that’s perfect. Even those who don’t cook can bring something from a bakery (fresh bread!) or a bottle of wine, that’s great too. Remember that your guests want to contribute to the meal and you don’t want to cut them out of the event. However much you decide to do on your own, Santa’s not the only one who should be making a list. Put your list together at least a week ahead of time, don’t wait until the last minute. Go get a pen and paper now, I’ll wait. Guest List This is the first list you should make, then check and see who might have special food requirements. There’s nothing like making a beautiful roast and green beans almandine and discovering that half your guests are vegans with nut allergies. Plan on preparing enough food for about 50% more guests than you are expecting. You never know when that dizzy queen from your office will suddenly meet the love of his life and bring him to dinner without warning you. Menu/Shopping List Deciding on your menu is one of the most fun lists to create! Then with your menu recipes in hand, make up your shopping list. Don’t forget to check for any spices you’ll need such as sage, thyme, cinnamon and nutmeg. If you need spices that you don’t use often, buy them fresh or a small amount from the bulk section. It will save you money and assure freshness. 26 boi

To-Do List This one should include items such as polish silver, clean the house, buy flowers, buy napkins, etc. Start on this list as soon as possible, do one or two chores a day and it won’t seem so overwhelming. Cooking Plan Put together a two or three day cooking plan. What items can be prepared ahead without a loss of quality? Be sure to put things like “bake cornbread” the day before you are preparing your cornbread stuffing. Cooking a turkey? Make sure to plan time for thawing and brining. Clean out your fridge a few days before you start cooking by having a leftover buffet for dinner. Ahead of Time Anything that can be prepared a day or two ahead of time is a lifesaver. Desserts are often perfect for making ahead and anything you serve chilled, such as cranberry sauce or chutney, can be prepared ahead of time as well. Casserole dishes, such as green bean casserole and dressings are actually better reheated. Clean and chop all vegetables and refrigerate in airtight containers. This is not to say you should prepare everything in advance. I have an aunt who brags that she starts cooking for Christmas Night in the summer and freezes everything. Her meal tastes like it, too. If you have some extra time, why not set the table a day or two before? If you’re worried about dust or pet hair, cover the set table with a clean sheet. Day of List Break down the schedule hour by hour, taking care to schedule long cooking foods enough time in the oven. Also, plan in some time to relax and get ready before your guests arrive. Post Party Depression For me the worst part of the party is the clean up afterwards. I know it would be so much easier if I used disposable plates and all of that. But, then why do I have an entire set of good china? The one concession I make is to use a foil roasting pan. I place it inside my beautiful Calphalon pan. That way it’s nice and sturdy and I can just throw the foil pan and my roasted can be rinsed off. If the clean-up afterwards is too daunting, enlist the friends that offered to help, or ask neighbors if their kids want to make a few quick bucks and pay them to come over the next day. Let everything soak overnight, you’ve earned it.

“STORY” TELLER Interview by Gregg Shapiro

A star on the cabaret circuit, MAC Award-winning performer Karen Mason has appeared on Broadway (in “Mamma Mia!” “Sunset Boulevard” and others), off-Broadway and on television. She has also recorded several old and new standards. Her latest role, as schoolteacher Miss Shields in the musical adaptation of “A Christmas Story” is sure to be a terrific addition to her already impressive résumé. I spoke with Miss Mason shortly before “A Christmas Story” made its Chicago premiere. (“A Christmas Story” runs Dec. 14-30 at the Chicago Theater on State. Visit achristmasstorythemusical.com.)

GS: You mentioned “Meet Me In St. Louis,” do you have other favorite Xmas movies?

KM: I love “White Christmas” and the older films, but “Meet Me in St. Louis” really does do it for me every time. When I was growing up, my mother, Gregg Shapiro: “A Christmas Story” is and I would watch it and every based on the popular 1983 Xmas movie sister time there was that moment in the of the same name. Were you a fan of the window singing “Have Yourself a Merry movie before you became involved in Little Christmas” By the end of the show, the play? I was crying like crazy. That movie was very special in my heart. To go Karen Mason: Well, I hate to admit this always from that to “A Christmas Story,” it’s but I probably was one of the three kind of a lateral move in a way because people who had never seen it. I had it’s about a family, it’s about the family seen bits and pieces of it, but I have experience during the holidays. I think never seen the entire movie. “Meet “A Christmas Story” is a little bit more Me In St. Louis” was kind of like my real in a lot of ways because family Christmas movie, so I didn’t want to be isn’t perfect. I hesitate to say the this disloyal to that. When I heard about the because I know it will show up in print, audition, I thought, okay, everybody I but my family isn’t perfect [laughs]. No knew loved the movie. They watch it one’s family is perfect; we all have these religiously during the holidays when it quirks in our family that it’s nice to runs 24 hours and they watch it four or little see that on screen. It’s a little bit more five times. When I knew I was going in relatable. for the audition I watched it and it was absolutely adorable, I loved it. I thought. GS: You released a Xmas CD a few ‘I guess when the time is right for you ago. Do you have other favorite actually open up to these things.’ Going years Christmas songs? from a movie to a musical can be a tough road, but I think a musical in a Things like “Silent Night,” some of lot of ways made it an almost complete KM:. the old carols, I do love hearing them. I story. Sometimes with a movie there think they playing a little too early are gaps that you get to fill in with your and by thestart time get to Christmas it’s imagination and I think the music is the maybe a little toowe much of Christmas, kind of glue that keeps it together and but the really beautiful carols, I do expands on some of the ideas of the love those. Perhaps one of my favorite movie. arrangements for the holidays is the one that Christopher Denny and Barry 36 boi

Kleinbort did for me of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, it’s just sexy and funny That one just makes me very, very happy, as a matter of fact I did that for my audition for “A Christmas Story.”

GS: As a “local girl,” what does it mean to you to be performing on stage in a musical in your hometown?

GS: Did you have a teacher like Miss Shields when you were in school?

GS: I hate for you to say it, too.

KM: I’ve done theater once in Chicago. I am so excited to be a part of this. I GS In “A Christmas Story,” you play had told my agent during the summer schoolteacher Miss Shields. What do that I was looking for more ways to you like best about this character? perform in Chicago. And I was looking for something that would allow me to KM: What I like about Miss Shields is stay in the city a little bit longer. After that she’s warm. She’s very Midwestern. doing cabaret, basically the longest is You don’t get to see Miss Shields a maybe five days. So I was looking for great deal, but I think she’s flawed like something a little bit longer term and everybody else ,which is always fun. this came up. I love coming home with She loves her class. She loves teaching something like this. The holidays are and yet I think sometimes gets a little very special in Chicago. The city looks overwhelmed that she has all of these so beautiful, it’s beautiful city anyway, children. We have a very clever cast and but the city is really beautiful and these young girls and boys are smart alive. Even the hustle and bustle of the as a whip. She wants them to achieve people shopping and I know it’s gotten greatness and she has certain strictures crazier and crazier as years have gone that she knows if they follow they will on in every city. It’s still an exciting and be great. If they stay in the margins they beautiful time every year. I hate to say it will be great [big laugh]. but I hope we have a little snow. KM: [Laughs] But it’s so beautiful. I know it’s hard to get around and it’s a pain but it’s so beautiful. To be in a show like this, it’s really warm and very Midwestern and very smart and kooky and crazy and all the things that I love about my family and my friends and it’s a great score. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have written an absolutely beautiful, great GS: Where do you stand on the BB gun score. This is a good piece to be coming as Xmas gift debate? Pro or con? home with and especially around the holidays. It’s something you can share KM: [Laughs] Wow! Let’s see, who with your family. As a performer I like am I going to alienate? [laughs]. It’s bringing those things. I try to do that hard because I have an eight-year-old in my cabaret, to incorporate not just nephew who’s a very typical eight-year- the hurt and the love but also some of old boy who loves guns and bombs. But the quirky eccentric parts of it, too. I’m personally, and I know my sister feels looking forward to being a part of that this way, but it’s very hard. It’s a phase, especially in a theatrical thing. That’s definitely, but I would say I would have what I started out wanting to pursue to be a little con. As a girl, I think I’m when I was first starting out. Cabaret con. Probably all the boys will go “Sure, was just something I discovered as I’m pro. It’s a BB gun.” a way to keep myself performing and to work with Brian Lasser. Both GS: Especially all the one-eyed boys. of us wanted to do theater, so to be able to come back to Chicago and be KM: [Laughs] Exactly! It’s a phase; boys performing in a lovely beautiful show like to see things blow up. But I would such as this, I think it’s fun, it’s great. have to say I’m definitely anti-gun. KM: I had quite a few nuns who were like that [laughs]. There was one, Sister Leonard, when I was in third grade. I really loved Sister Leonard, but she definitely had rules that I had to follow and one of them was no talking. I had a lot of trouble with that one [laughs].

by Harry Taint By now you may have visions of sugar plums dancing in your head. Personally, I have visions of shirtless gogo boys dancing in my head, but then again, that’s the case all year ‘round. Yes that was Beyonce and Jay Z up in Andersonville a few weeks ago. I spotted them having a cocktail at Vincent’s on Balmoral while they waited for a table at Great Lakes. I don’t know what’s more shocking, the fact that Beyonce and Jay Z were in Andersonville or that they had to wait for a table. Speaking of Andersonville, the hood’s “Later Night” promotion is certain to bring all the kids out to do their last minute shopping on Friday Dec. 16. If you’re in that group, head over to Moda Boutique for its party where you’ll not only find drinks and treats but hot underwear models too. Now that would fill my stocking! Still haven’t finished your holiday shopping? Stop by Gerber-Hart Library’s “Holidaze” book sale on Wed. December 21 to pick up some last minute gifts. Amy Armstrong and Freddie Allen always give it their all for every performance and this year they’re giving it all for charity in their new show Amy Armstrong & Freddy Allen “How the Diva Stole Christmas! VI” on Friday, Dec. 16 and Saturday Dec. 17 at Hydrate. The, along with Hydrate, will donate proceeds from both evenings to Chicago Lost & Found, a notfor-profit organization dedicated to creative transformation, through re-purposing of unused materials to create value; which in turn provides creative opportunities to build and support the educational community. VIP tickets are only $25 which gets you seating in the first 3 rows! General Admission tickets are only $15 in advance and $20 at the door. If you’re into bears of the Jewish variety, stop in at Touche and get to know Hanukkah Harry during the bar’s Hanukkah party on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Spin the dreidel and win prizes, it wouldn’t be the first time someone at Touche

got a prize for spinning on something. (That innuendo was so convoluted even I don’t know what it means.) Looking for something to do between Christmas and New Year’s? Why not go bottoms up at Oak Park’s Velvet Rope on Tuesday, Dec. 27 as Tajma Hall hosts “Bottoms Up Bingo!” Hey ladies, still don’t have a date for New year’s eve? Stop in at Parlour on Dec. 30 for Lipstick’s speed dating event “L Stop”. If money’s tight this season, stop in at Halsted’s on Monday nights for the pub’s “Bargain Basement Burger” event and sign up for team trivia with Teri Yaki, maybe you’ll win a fabulous prize. If you’re in town for the holidays or just spending Christmas Eve with your family, you might need some drinks and time with your own kind of people after an evening of Uncle Henry pontificating about how glad he is that Newt’s in the race. Luckily Christmas Eve is a Saturday night and most of the clubs and bars will be open!! So make your excuses and decompress at one of your favorite watering holes. If your family gives you grief, tell them you’re going to midnight mass. If you drop in at The Ram you can even explain the marks on your knees by saying you knelt in prayer. Even before we get to Christmas, there are a bunch of events to tempt you away from shaking those presents under the tree. On Wednesday, Dec. 21, the title of Spin’s party is “Give it all you got” says it all. Show them your best stuff and you might get some fresh skivvies, courtesy of one Mr. Andrew Christian. Hosted by Mercedes with giveaways at midnight. If you get a hankering for pizza on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, remember that Piehole will be open both days. Ditto for New Year’s Eve and Day. boi 41

My favorite aunt returns every gift we give her. It doesn’t matter if I give her exactly what she’s asked for, she returns it every time. Once she asked for a specific kind of scarf. Not only did she return it the day after Christmas, she made me drive her to the mall. She gave it to the cashier, spent an hour looking for a replacement and when she brought her choice up to the cashier again, he pointed out that she had selected the exact same item she just returned. What can I do to ensure that she doesn’t return her gift this year? Dear AE Give her cash. If that seems too impersonal, make it a game; fill a piggy bank with quarters, or tape singles end to end and roll them up and have them pop out of a tissue box. On the other hand you could just buy her anything at all and know that this is part of the game she plays. I had a relative who used to do the same thing. So, one year I gave her a set of free weights. I told her I couldn’t figure out what to get her and at least this way she’d get a workout when she returned the gift. She may still be returning the gifts I give her, but she doesn’t say anything about it anymore.

Other than this, he is a sweetie. Am I being unreasonable?

Dear AM

AM do you know AE? Either way here’s a suggestion that works for both of you. Set up a budget for your gifts, then shop for them together. That way you each get to spend the day with your favorite relative and everybody is happy with the gifts they’ve been given and the gifts they received. You can even take them home and hold on to them until you get together for the holiday. Problem solved... and a new family tradition has begun.

All Grown Up

I’ll be going home for the holidays again this year. I am the youngest of five, all of which are married with children. Since I’m single and the youngest of my siblings, I usually get put at the kids’ table with my nieces and nephews (some of whom are college aged, just less than 10 years younger than I am). I like hanging out with them, but feel as if I’m not taken seriously, not considered an adult. How can I handle this?

Dear AGU There are two ways to handle this, and a lot depends on the family dynamics. You can call home ahead of time and let your family know that you would like Auntie Mame to be placed at the adult table. Or, just I have a nephew that I love as if he were my own child. We’ve always been before dinner, you can just move your extremely close, maybe it’s because he’s plate and chair over to the table where the rest of the adults will be seated then gay and I’m what used to be referred join them at dinner without mentioning to as “the spinster aunt”. (I’m an out it. Sometimes a stealth attack is the lesbian, but my family prefers avoid the easiest to pull off without drama. issue). I take great pride in picking out ________________________________ the perfect gift for my nephew every year. He, on the other hand, picks up Magyar has a BA in communications, any old thing (I suspect that they’re often Ace a MA in sex therapy and a PHD in zoology. “re-gifts”). I drop hints left and right He is a registered couple’s counselor about what I’d like, but he never seems specializing in the GLBT community. Send to notice.
