QMUSIC
Christmas Past and present(s)
By Gregg Shapiro
What could Kylie Minogue possibly add to the flurry of Christmas music? As it turns out, plenty on Kylie Christmas! The campy retro renditions of “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “Winter Wonderland” bring good cheer. Respectful readings of Yaz’s “Only You” (a duet with James Corden) and the Pretenders’ “2000 Miles” bring Christmas tears. Minogue re-wraps The Waitresses “Christmas Wrapping,” an Iggy Pop (!) duet, in kitschy paper. Even new compositions, “White December” (co-written by Minogue) and “Every Day’s Like Christmas,” are welcome additions to the holiday music songbook. The only lump of coal is the Frank Sinatra “duet” on “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.” Sarah McLachlan released her debut album at the tail end of the 1980s and then went on the become one of the female singer/ songwriters most closely associated with the 1990s, due in part to her series of Lilith Fair music festivals. Her The Classic Christmas Album includes all 12 tracks from McLachlan’s 2006 Wintersong disc and adds five more songs to the mix. Merry and memorable selections from the recording include the McLachlan original title tune, covers of songs by fellow Canadians including Joni Mitchell (“River”) and Gordon Lightfoot (“Song For A Winter’s Night,” which also appeared on the 1994 Miracle On 34th Street soundtrack), “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” on which she is joined by the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Children’s Choir and Youth Choir) and “Christmas

Time Is Here,” featuring Diana Krall. Holiday highlights of the additional material include her medley/duet with Barenaked Ladies on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings,” and the originals “Find Your Voice” and “Space On The Couch For Two.” A portion of the sales of Band of Merrymakers’ Welcome To Our Christmas Party will benefit MusiCares, an organization serving musicians “in times of financial, personal, or medical crisis.” So who are Band of Merrymakers? Led by producer/songwriter Sam Hollander and Better Than Ezra’s Kevin Griffin, Band of Merrymakers, are described as “a rotating group of traveling troubadours,” including Natasha Bedingfield, Michael Fitzpatrick (of Fitz & The Tantrums) and Dan Wilson, among others. The disc features a number of appealing new Christmas tunes for this holiday season and those to follow. A Very Swingin’ Basie Christmas! is a very accurate title for the new holiday recording by The Count Basie Orchestra, under the direction of Scotty Barnhart. Swing it does! Released to coincide with the orchestra’s 80th anniversary, A Very Swingin’ Basie Christmas! is the first Christmas recording in its history. Gay pop music legend Johnny Mathis, a man with his own lengthy history of Christmas music, can be heard lending his vocals to Kay Thompson’s “It’s The Holiday Season,” while 21st century soul goddess Ledisi belts it out on “The Christmas Song.” “Jingle Bells” jingles and “Winter Wonderland” is wonderful.
Motor Mouth By Parker Carr
New Car Smell A friend told me that on that unseasonably warm day we had a few weeks ago, he saw diva extraordinaire, Paula Sinclaire, riding a round with her top down. I said that I didn’t know she had a convertible. “She doesn’t” he replied.
Kia Niro
It’s an old joke, I know, but then Paula is no spring chicken either. If Paula really does want to put her top down, she might be interested in a new convertible, the Buick Cascada.
manufactured at Kia’s assembly plant in South Korea and will go on sale in the second half of 2016. Kia plans to follow that up with a plug-in version.
Kia's hybrid compact SUV, The Niro, is based on a concept car that debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show. It will be
The Niro will be feature a 1.6-liter gasoline engine combined with a 32-kilowatt electric motor. It will send power to the wheels through a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission and store energy in a 1.56 kilowatt-hour lithium-polymer battery pack.
Buick Cascada Following GM's 2009 bankruptcy, Buick staggered along with a threevehicle lineup and was almost dropped. The Verano compact sedan and larger Encore were added to the line-up and helped boost sales. The Cascada convertible that goes on sale in January should give Buick sales the shot in the arm that it needs. The Cascada will be a low-volume car for Buick, even though dealers are clamoring for the brand's first drop-top in 25 years. Initial dealer orders exceeded the supply 10 to one, Buick says.
The Niro is the start of Kia’s plan to spend $10 billion through 2020 building a full lineup of eco-friendly cars. IN addition to electric vehicles, the company hopes to launch a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle by 2020. “We don’t believe that there is any one ‘silver bullet’ that can satisfy the demand for low emission technology within the car industry,” Ki-Sang Lee, a research and development senior officer at Kia, said in. “We foresee a wide range of eco-friendly power trains co-existing for an extended period of time.” Kia also said today that hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants of the Optima sedan will go on sale in the first half of 2016, followed later in the year by the plug-in hybrid. They will use almost identical power trains to Kia’s sibling brand Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Hyundai will also introduce a small hatchback hybrid sedan similar to the Volt. boiMAG 21

FIT TIPS
Reverse Hyperextension: A Posterior Chain Treasure
By Michael Elder
Have you ever wanted an exercise that would effectively train the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back all at once? Well, look no further. The reverse hyperextension is one of my personal favorite exercises for the posterior chain. Not all gyms have a reverse hyperextension table, but if yours does, I highly recommend incorporating this exercise into your routine. I would recommend performing this exercise without weight at first. Rather, just use your body as resistance. Once you begin to build a base strength, you can gradually start adding weight. If your gym does not have a reverse hyperextension table, a massage table can sometimes be used as a substitute, as long as it is secure. Obviously, you would not be able to use weight in this situation. Let’s face it; we all want great glutes and hamstrings. This is a golden exercise that can help you achieve them. Some of my clients even refer to this exercise as “the butt buster”. Try it for yourself. You’ll see what they’re talking about. Be healthy!
1. Stand in front of the reverse hyperextension table. If you are using weight, there is usually a leather strap or a leg pad for you to step into. 2. Press yourself up and lie forward over the top of the pad of the table. The edge of the pad should be at approximately hip bone level. 3. On an exhale, extend both legs upward and behind you, pushing through the Achilles tendon. Care should be taken to not bend the knees during this movement, but rather keeping the legs straight. Bending the knees too much will isolate the hamstrings and lessen the training effect for the glutes and lower back. 4. Inhale as you slowly lower your legs back down to the starting position. I have seen many people rush this phase of the exercise, which is not good for either the exerciser or the machine.

Deleted scenes are the sole bonus feature on the DVD. Not for the faint of heart, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi’s doc Meru takes viewers to new and terrifying heights, as Alpinists attempt to climb Mount Meru’s Himalayan “shark fin,” more than 20,000 feet above the Ganges River. DVD bonus features include audio commentary, bonus expedition footage and the filmmakers’ interview at Sundance. The late Swiss surrealist artist H. R. Giger’s World. DVD extra features include a “making of” doc and Giger photo galleries.
