Honey west, In the Chicago Spotlight Interviews with leaders in Chicago’s GLBT community
By Gregg Shapiro A graduate of Indiana University with a degree in Musical Theater, Honey West is also a 2012 Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame inductee. After college, Honey traveled with cruise ships and resorts doing a variety of revues, which she refers to as “boot camp.” Her theatrical credits include “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” and “Tony and Tony’s Wedding”. She has performed her cabaret act in Chicago and in touring productions for the past 13 years When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? That is an interesting question. When I was growing up 35 years ago, we didn’t talk about being gay or Trans. It was in high school that I sat down with my two close friends, and we came out to each other. That was probably 1977ish. In those days most people didn’t actually come out; you just confided in a short list of friends that you trusted. If you had the guts to venture to a gay bar you would meet a group of people there that you would be able to be yourself with. I went through college still hiding myself for the most part. Again, a few select friends and bar buddies. I left college a toured with a small production company called “Musicana” - mostly cruise ships and resorts. I realized that it was not uncommon to be gay in the entertainment industry (I thought I was gay at the time). I met many other guys and learned to be comfortable with myself in those circles. Then I had to come out again!!! (As) if once wasn’t enough [laughs]! I finally acknowledged myself as a trans female at the age of 41. I was known in Chicago and had to come out more publicly. It was a hard adjustment for some people around me, but I grew from the experience. I never did come out to my family, my sister gently outed me to them, one at a time, so I would come home for holidays. I guess I never thought they would understand. I underestimated their capacity to love me. Please name five of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. Alexandra Billings, my best friend, is the first to come to mind. She is the one who introduced me to myself. We were having lunch before going to Lesibigay Radio to host our regular spot. I was in a
dark depression at the time, when she mentioned, “Do you think you might be transgender?” She, of course, knew long before I did but was waiting for the right time to spring it on me [laughs]. A hundred pounds of bricks lifted off my shoulders. The feeling was such a relief that I knew that this was the answer I was looking for. There are so many others that it is hard to pick a few. I look at the front-runners who dared to be different in a time when it could have meant their demise. If not for them, we would not be where we are today. What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the GLBT community in Chicago and at large? I hope I have represented my community in a positive way. I have performed to straight audiences and gay audience alike. My hope, from early on, when it was not so cool to be me, was that people would come to “see the freak show” and leave feeling that we are not so different after all, and of course lots of music and laughter. What are your future goals and aspirations? I am writing a show called “Genderella,” along with Joanne Koch (book), Ilya Levinson (music) and Myrna Petlicki (lyrics). We are scheduled perform the show at the Writer’s Bloc on my birthday, April 29, 2013. This will be the first reading and or workshop. I would love to tour the show to colleges and theaters and talk to people about my journey and to, maybe, help them understand our world. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation. They have so much more information at their fingertips. I grew up in a time without cell phones, computers and cable TV. You had to hope you could find a book in the library to learn about who you were. It is an exciting time to grow up because they are going to know gay marriage and equal rights, things I would not have dared to dream. I would hope they would know and understand the history of our movement and respect all of the struggle it took get the freedom they now have. I would tell them, “Never let anybody squash your dreams because of who you are. Stand in the strength of knowing who you are and knowing that is OK to be you.” boi 25

ASK ACE Parent Trap
While she was home from college for Christmas break my 20 year-old daughter came out to me. Her father and I have been divorced for five years. After she went away to school, I fell in love with an old friend and we have been in a relationship for the past two years (roughly, since the time my daughter went away to college). My daughter only knows that “Aunt Patsy” and I have been living together, not that we are lovers. I feel like I should have said something to my daughter when she came out to me, but frankly, I was so shocked I didn’t think of it. Now it seems awkward to do so. I don’t know what to do.
Dear PT,
Tell your daughter immediately. She’ll figure it out eventually, if she hasn’t already. You might start the conversation by saying something like, “I’m so glad that you felt comfortable enough to tell me that you’re a lesbian. It makes me feel as if I can tell you something equally personal. So am I.” She might have some questions about when you came to terms with your sexuality and if that’s one of the reasons why you and her father divorced. Just be honest with her and enjoy a new chapter of your relationship with her.
Wondering on Wilson
I am 23 years-old and went back home for Christmas in rural Kentucky. My family didn’t know I was gay until I came out during this visit. I was surprised at how well they handled it. In fact, many of them said they rather suspected that I was when I moved to Chicago. The only person who has reacted negatively is a distant cousin. When we were in our teens, he and I used to “experiment” with each other. He is about five years older and was the first one to initiate it, but I was a willing participant. Now he avoids me and I’ve heard him say that doesn’t want anything to do with me. I don’t think he’s still into sex with guys, he’s married now with six kids. I think he’s kind of freaked out that I might say something. I would never do so, but he won’t see me so how can I let him know?
Dear WoW,
I assume that your cousin has a phone. It shouldn’t be too hard to get his number if you don’t have it. Call him at a time when you think he might be alone and tell him what you’ve told me in your letter. That you have no desire to say anything about the experimenting you did as kids. Tell him you’d like to remain friends and hope he can accept you for who you are now. Whether he’s still active with men or not doesn’t even enter the equation, as far as you’re concerned. Your other choice is to simply ignore the situation and don’t let it bother you, it’s his problem, not yours.
Sticky Situation
I’ve fallen in love with my best friend. When we met three years ago, we both had boyfriends. His cheated on him and they broke up. My boyfriend was transferred to Washington D.C., we tried to make it work long distance, but it was just too difficult. It’s not like he was a great love or anything, and we’ve remained friends. Since then (about a year ago), my best friend and I do almost everything together. I want to tell him how I feel, but we’re going on a gay cruise soon and if he says that he doesn’t think of me that way then I’m afraid that it will make things awkward.
Dear SS,
It certainly would. It would be better to wait until after the cruise to bring up a discussion like that. You never know what could spark between the two of you on the cruise. Keep in mind though that if you’re going on a gay cruise, there will be plenty of available men and that may change your dynamic for either of you. How will you feel if he has a fling (or two or more) during the cruise? If you choose not to discuss this before the cruise, make certain that you’ll be able to respond appropriately to whatever happens. Perhaps it would be best for you to put the idea of a more intimate relationship with your friend on hold and enjoy the experience. If you still feel the same way after the cruise, then full steam ahead.
