Homeopathic medicines are presented with very clear and specific indications and directions for use. They are available either as single medicines (only one active ingredient) or as branded medicines (most with multiple active ingredients). Regulation Homeopathic medicines are regulated as drugs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They have been used safely in the U.S. since before the passage of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act in 1938, and the FDA’s Compliance Policy Guide (CPG 7132.15) “Conditions Under Which Homeopathic Drugs May Be Marketed” has been an effective and workable way to regulate homeopathic medicines since 1988. All Boiron homeopathic medicines comply with a well-established framework of guidelines, regulations and quality standards enforced by the FDA through routine pharmaceutical manufacturing site inspections and surveillance of marketed products. To be placed on the market, a homeopathic medicine must by listed with the FDA and manufactured in compliance with the FDA’s drug Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Manufacturing As a pharmaceutical company, Boiron maintains the highest standards in manufacturing, meeting the standards specified by regulators throughout the world, including those of the FDA. With the expertise of pharmacists, chemists and botanists, Boiron has developed proprietary manufacturing practices that implement numerous quality controls at every production step. Selection of the Botanical, Biological and Mineral Strains: More than 1,000 strains are used to manufacture homeopathic medicines in the U.S. After undergoing a strict selection procedure that includes certification of quality, these raw materials are processed following the guidelines established by the HPUS. Homeopathic Tinctures: Botanical substances are macerated for 10 to 21 days in a mixture of water and alcohol in stainless steel containers. Next, these tinctures are put through stainless steel hydraulic presses at standardized pressures to ensure consistent extraction of the active ingredient. The tinctures are filtered to remove all particles. Tinctures and soluble strains can then be homeopathically diluted. Insoluble materials first undergo a series of dilutions in lactose before being dissolved in the liquid phase. Homeopathic Dilutions: Homeopathic medicines are the result of successive dilutions of the tinctures. Each dilution is followed by a thorough standardized succussion (vigorous vertical shaking) also known as “dynamization.” Environmental controls are essential during production. Boiron’s manufacturing laboratories in which this takes place are equipped with a sophisticated air purification system that guards against contamination and ensures that the ambient air is renewed up to 20 times per hour. Production of Pellets: Boiron has perfected every stage of pellet production and meets pharmaceutical standards by using a unique process of concentric porous layers of sucrose and lactose. Triple Saturation: Boiron uses a patented three-step system where neutral pellets are medicated to the core with a homeopathic active solution.
