Collaborative The best teachers are those who are engaged, passionate about what they do and take a personal interest in your success. At Boise State, you’ll work with accomplished professors who are eager to collaborate and share their knowledge with you. Their achievements speak for themselves. Many of our professors are internationally recognized scholars, authors or lecturers. Others consult for governments and corporations worldwide or spearhead groundbreaking research.
OUTSTANDING FACULTY
FACULTY PROFILES >
Boise State professor and forensic DNA expert Greg Hampikian and the Idaho Innocence Project (IIP) are assisting in a highprofile international murder case in Italy as a result of disputed DNA evidence. Hampikian has helped exonerate eight wrongly convicted people around the nation; in four of those cases new DNA evidence identified the actual perpetrators.
> Special Education and Early Childhood Studies
associate professor Evelyn Johnson, has received a $20,000 federal grant to improve math instruction. “My goal is to connect Boise State’s special education teacher candidates with the best practices that help students struggling with math,” Johnson said. Her project is one of only five nationally to receive a Doing What Works grant.
Since 1990, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has named eleven Boise State professors “Idaho Professor of the Year.”
Equally as dedicated to their students as they are to their work in the community, our professors keep regular office hours so that you can ask questions, seek advice or simply get to know them on a more personal level. And although Boise State is regarded as a major metropolitan research university, you’ll find that full-time professors, not graduate assistants, teach most of your classes—even introductory courses.

A Boise State research team is the second in the country to help the U.S. Geological Survey use unmanned aircraft, or drones, for wildlife studies. Biology professor Jen Forbey and four students conducted their research by flying drones at 400, 200 and 100 feet, taking a swath of the landscape to determine habitat quality for two threatened species, the pygmy rabbit and sage grouse.

INTERNSHIPS Boise State has built a robust internship program and every year Boise State students receive valuable internships throughout the state and beyond. Our students have worked as interns for some of the leading companies in the nation, including Micron, SuperValu (formerly Albertsons), Simplot and Hewlett-Packard. Others have interned at the Idaho Legislature and for the City of Boise. To get an idea of what opportunities may be in store for you, here are a few more examples of internships recently filled by Boise State students: • Working with Ada County Marine Enforcement Unit to enforce state boating laws and conduct boat inspections • Identifying the best sound bites to be broadcast on Idaho PTV from taped interviews and live video of debates on the House and Senate floors
• Working on a marketing team for Daimler Chrysler in Germany providing factory tours to potential customers and visitors • Performing field studies on forest insect populations and plant pathologies for the Unites States Forest Service • Working with government organizations to research alternative energy and energy efficiency in office buildings and small businesses • Interpreting and monitoring the Spanish language broadcasts each Saturday on KBSU 730 AM • Conducting review of tax accounts for foreign subsidiaries of Micron Technology, Inc. • Creating a corporate wellness program for employees of local companies through the YMCA

RESEARCH At Boise State, research isn’t something you learn, it’s something you do—side-by-side with your professors. It’s not like that everywhere. At most universities, only graduate students can participate in research. Our commitment to providing direct, hands-on learning for all our students results in unmatched research exposure and opportunity. You’ll work alongside faculty in a wide range of research projects, such as monitoring groundwater flow, studying brain functions or conducting community surveys. You’ll co-write papers with faculty mentors. You’ll present your own findings at Boise State’s annual Undergraduate Research Conference or at professional meetings around the country. Besides providing you with opportunities to work with nationally recognized scholars, your research experience can also help open the door to graduate school or an exciting career.
TOP NOTCH PREPARATION
U.S. News and World Report ranks Boise State No. 5 in the western division of its “Keep an Eye on These Schools” list for master’s degree institutions that have “recently made striking improvements or innovations.”
> Senior biology major Lindsey Catlin co-authored a paper with Biology
professor Troy Rohn on a study he conducted which is the first to show the presence of the influenza A virus in brains of individuals who died of Parkinson’s disease. Rohn and Catlin were able to find the virus present in all 12 cases they tested. The study will have to be replicated with larger sample sizes, but it is an important first link to studies that have correlated a possible viral infection with contracting Parkinson’s disease later in life.

If the intersection indicates you are an Excellent Candidate, you are highly likely to be admitted. If you are a Possible Candidate, admission will depend on several factors, including your academic record, date of application, and class availability. Possible candidates may submit recommendations and a personal statement for a more comprehensive review. Will you be admitted? Find out online here: admissions.boisestate.edu/index
