Collaborative

The best teachers are those who are engaged, passionate about what they do and take a personal interest in your success. At Boise State, you’ll work with accomplished professors who are eager to collaborate and share their knowledge with you. Their achievements speak for themselves. Many of our professors are internationally recognized scholars, authors or lecturers. Others consult for governments and corporations worldwide or spearhead groundbreaking research.

OUTSTANDING FACULTY

Since 1990, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has named eleven Boise State professors “Idaho Professor of the Year.”

Equally as dedicated to their students as they are to their work in the community, our professors keep regular office hours so that you can ask questions, seek advice or simply get to know them on a more personal level. And although Boise State is regarded as a major metropolitan research university, you’ll find that full-time professors, not graduate assistants, teach most of your classes—even introductory courses.

14

FACULTY PROFILES > Physics professor Alex Punnoose’s

research in nanotechnology has garnered $4.1 million in research grants, three patents and collaboration opportunities with MIT.

> English professor Jeffrey Wilhelm

has written over 20 books and is the founder of the Boise State Writing Project, an organization dedicated to bringing high-quality professional development programs to the teachers of Southern Idaho.

>

Working toward a future where common ailments such as arthritis, cleft palate and cartilage degeneration in knees have disappeared, biology professor Julie Oxford has received more than $9 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health and other agencies to pursue biomedical research.

> Art professor Larry McNeil

was recognized in Washington, D.C., after his selection as one of only five artists nationwide to contribute to the Art in Embassies program. He was subsequently invited to attend the United Nations’ Seventh Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues earlier this year.

Every year, hundreds of Boise State students receive valuable internships throughout the state and beyond. Some have worked as interns for some of the leading companies in the nation, including Micron, SuperValue (formerly Albertsons), Simplot and Hewlett-Packard. Others have interned at the Idaho Legislature and for the City of Boise. To get an idea of what opportunities may be in store for you, here are a few more examples of internships recently filled by Boise State students: •

ONE SUCCESS STORY >

Boise State filmmaker Saandra Steinfelt was among 150 students from across the nation who participated in an internship program at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival in France. The honors student assisted festival attendees and was even given the opportunity to screen a short of her documentary “We Can Change The World” at the Cannes Short Film Corner. Her film focuses on Idaho students who met the Dalai Lama during his visit to Sun Valley in 2005 and how the encounter affected their lives.

RESEARCH At Boise State, research isn’t something you learn, it’s something you do—side-by-side with your professors. It’s not like that everywhere. At most universities, only graduate students can participate in research. Our commitment to providing direct, hands-on learning for all our students results in unmatched research exposure and opportunity. At Boise State, you’ll work alongside faculty in a wide range of research projects, such as monitoring groundwater flow, studying brain functions or conducting community surveys. You’ll co-write papers with faculty mentors. You’ll present your own findings at Boise State’s annual Undergraduate Research Conference or at professional meetings around the country. Besides providing you with opportunities to work with nationally recognized scholars, your research experience can also help open the door to graduate school or an exciting career.

TOP NOTCH PREPARATION >

After engineering student Dave Estrada graduated in 2008, he was accepted to top graduate schools across the country, including Purdue, Penn State, Illinois and Michigan. He credits his success to the challenging classes and hands-on research he experienced as an undergraduate at Boise State.

METROPOLITAN

The capital of Idaho, Boise rises spectacularly from a lush, green valley surrounded by mountainous high desert. Home to more than 635,000 people, the Boise region is the largest urban area between Portland and Salt Lake City. Its nickname is Treasure Valley—for its “treasure chest of resources and opportunities.” Nationally recognized for its safety, quality of life and beautiful sunny climate, Boise is many things to many people: It’s a big city, but offers small-town warmth.
