bok tower gardens Mission Statement To share Edward Bok’s gift of a beautiful and serene garden with music, architecture, and nature so that all who visit will be inspired by his vision:

Wherever your lives may be cast, make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it.

Vision Statement To offer visitors a unique experience in a world-class garden where one can find beauty, peace, and inspiration.

Institutional Goals 1. We are committed to promoting our distinctiveness as a large public garden, preserving and sharing the legacy of Edward Bok, and serving as a worldwide source of valued and authoritative information. 2. We are committed to stewardship of the environment through our programs and our practices. 3. We are committed to delivering a high quality of presentation in our core areas of horticulture, conservation, and music, and by exceeding constituent expectations in our customer service, visitor amenities, and programming.

4. We are committed to promoting and maintaining our relevance in the community in which we operate, among our peers, and among those who attend and support us. 5. We are committed to building long-term financial sustainability by becoming more efficient and strategic financially to ensure the achievement of institutional objectives.

From Bok Tower Gardens’ Long Range Fundamental Plan 2011-2015

from the president Your Story is Our Story In 2013-2014, our 85th Anniversary season, we honored the stories of the people who have been integral to our landscape. “Your Story is Our Story” was a year-long celebration of the contributions of those who helped make our Gardens vibrant, those who are continuing today to make that contribution, and to those who will be helping us write a new story through a $12 million Preserve the Legacy, Steward the Future Campaign. Thank you for being part of our story—past, present and future.

Design Connecting the new garden spaces to the historic core gardens is a masterful .8‑mile paved circulation path that will take visitors on a journey – an unfolding story of this unique place. We took the first step on that journey in the summer of 2014 by paving a primary loop in the historic core garden. Architectural firms Lake|Flato and Parlier Architects were busy in 2013-14 designing the Discovery Center classroom, outdoor kitchen, and the new administration building and biology lab that will house the offices of our education and conservation staff, as well as UF-IFAS extension agents.

The Gardens & Conservation Our horticulture staff started preparing for Phase One by building a nursery extension to grow new plants and to hold transplanted plants. We also saved more than 190 sabal palms from our preserve lands that were being prepared for long leaf pine planting. These palms and other saved plants being grown and held in our nursery will be used in the new gardens. In anticipation of upcoming path construction, staff drained, cleaned and refilled the Reflection Pond and

removed invasive/undesirable trees and plant material. To the west of the tower, we did extensive work to restore gopher tortoise habitat by removing weed trees and weed grasses. For the next few years we have set a priority to increase tortoise habitat. Our Rare Plant Conservation Program (RPCP) won the Judge’s Choice “Livable Polk” Award in 2014. RPCP added five new species to the 64 rare and endangered species in the National Collection already grown in our conservation nursery. One of the new species is the beautiful Glandularia tampensis, Tampa verbena.

digitization of video and audio recordings underway, and to honor their support of the carillon program and Tower restoration, we dedicated the Paul and Carol Collins Carillonneur Studio in the spring of 2014. For the 85th Anniversary season, Librarian Joy Banks collaborated with other Gardens staff on a visual history exhibit that won the Florida Historical Society David C. Brotemarkle Award. Carillonneur Geert D’hollander hosted the 22nd International Carillon Festival at the Gardens entitled “New Music on Old Bells,” featuring five world premieres and ten North American premieres.

Conservation staff and dedicated volunteers performed four rare plant rescues saving over 3,600 plants and over 100,000 seeds, performed seven population introductions in Lake, Orange and Polk counties, and secured a Disney Worldwide Conservation Rapid Response Fund grant to support a large-scale rare plant rescue.

Geert worked with facilities staff to improve sound recording quality with new microphones, performed rarelyheard 1930s Anton Brees manuscripts, and toured Belgium and The Netherlands over the summer performing at festivals and for the Royal Family of The Netherlands at “The Four Freedoms Awards.”

The Tower & Carillon

Geert also coached two amazingly talented students who placed 1st and 2nd in the Queen Fabiola International Carillon Competition, the most prestigious carillon competition in the world. One of them, Joey Brink, will be a BTG carillon fellow in FY15.

The State of Florida granted additional Tower restoration funding to help complete the tile grille repair in full by fall 2015. The Anton Brees Carillon Library staff expanded in 2013-14, co-authored a collections policy, and began year one of a three-year “Hidden Collections” cataloging project thanks to a $219,700 grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources. Funding from Paul and Carol Collins and Ed and Joy Snyder helped get our

draft with Librarian Joy Banks and cocurated the “A Look Back” timeline exhibit in the Visitor Center. A grant from the State of Florida- Division of Historic Resources helped undertake several much-needed restoration projects including a Moongate fountain study, gutter repair and replacement, exterior woodwork repairs, and re-wiring of light fixtures.

People, Events & Programs In 2013-14, our passionate corps of 401 volunteers donated 51,606 hours in all areas of our operations. We could not accomplish all that we do without this incredible volunteer staff. Our Board of Directors took on a greater role this year as fundraisers and ambassadors throughout the state as we shared news about our Phase One plans. And we inaugurated a new Gardens group, the Amaryllis Club, to support our 20th Anniversary Holiday Home Tour at Pinewood Estate. Our attendance hit a 12-year high this year with 162,665 visitors, and memberships rose to 4,874 households. Boktoberfest crowd 2013Attendance and revenue for Pinewood Estate, as well as our 85th Anniversary events and programs exceeded expectations. The Holiday Home Tour hosted a 19-year high of 15,726 visitors. Group visitation increased 13% to 7,185, and the Boktoberfest Plant Sale recorded 9,272 attendees. Mother’s Day weekend and Pink Day, benefiting breast cancer research, generated high visitation and a spike in plant sales. We also made the choice this year to move Sunset & Symphony to December,

which increased attendance and revenues dramatically.

Education In anticipation of an increase in scope for the Gardens for Life program, we fasttracked the design of a new office building and lab on Bok Tower Gardens’ property to house our educational and conservation staff, a molecular biology lab, and UF/IFAS personnel. Our educational programming grew as we launched the first BTG/IFAS mini-grants program, held a Teachers Open House, introduced a Family Camping Adventure, and hosted a September Wildflower conference with the Florida Wildflower Foundation.

Retail Services & Marketing Our Blue Palmetto Café and Tower & Garden Gift Shop set a new revenue record again this year by grossing $1.225 million. Revenue, as well as per capita sales and profits were up substantially in the Café. New chef Matt Fulwood stepped into the head position and introduced a variety of daily specials. Our newest book, Bok Tower Gardens: America’s Taj Mahal was released in October; book signings took place in Miami and at the Gardens with co-authors Ken Treister and BTG President David Price. The 85th Anniversary and Preserve the Legacy, Steward the Future Campaign put the marketing department through its paces in 2013-2014. We welcomed Randall Rupert as our new Marketing Manager who went to work on a steady stream of program marketing materials. Projects included the “A Look Back” timeline exhibit, content for our BokLegacy.org website, Campaign collateral and videos, a new Visitor

orientation film in collaboration with Indie Atlantic Films, and a robust media and advertising promotional calendar. A new partnership with Net Weave Social Networking enabled marketing staff to outsource and generate improved social media content. Facebook “likes” rose to 32,000 and website traffic increased 21% over last year with 463,000 visitors and 1.4 million page views. We also secured tourism marketing grants from Visit Central Florida to promote and advertise several of our major events, yielding record attendance.

Philanthropy We taped eight special interviews, including two people who attended our 1929 Dedication, and wove them into a Campaign video and new Visitor orientation film. We inaugurated a “Love in Bloom” reunion of those who had married and gotten engaged here. Our Tower Key Society program and Founder’s Room Tours kept members engaged and informed. With all the positive energy and vision of our 85th anniversary season, membership grew by an unprecedented 10% in 2013‑2014. Donors also contributed generously to the Preserve the Legacy, Steward the Future Campaign, taking us to $10.4 million and enabling us to launch the public phase of our $12 million Campaign on the Feb. 1 Dedication Weekend.

friends of the gardens It has been an amazing year of giving to the Gardens – of time, money, and energy. Donors contributed over $3 million to the Preserve the Legacy, Steward the Future Campaign. In summer 2014, we received a $250,000 anonymous challenge gift from a new donor to the Gardens through the GiveWell Community Foundation to build the children’s garden. Our vision is taking hold throughout the state and inspiring gifts from new friends. Meanwhile, our loyal members continued to enrich the Gardens this year with their strong support. Two longtime members made special gifts to get our carillon music digitization project off the ground. We are at a record high for member households, and the planned giving program began to see more traction in 2013-14 with several new members of the Bok Legacy Society.
